Over the july 4 weekend, i went to new york from washington d.c. to visit a friend. i took the private buses from washington dc chinatown to new york chinatown. i used the buses from two companies: eastern travel and new century bus. because the low-fare ticket, there were many passengers taking the bus. unfortunately, the safety issue has become a big concern to the passengers. i believe that dot should take immediately action to review this service. the problems i observed are: 1. there are no officially assigned stations for the bus in either washington d.c. and new york. the bus can stop anywhere to pick up the passengers even in the middle of the traffic way. 2. most of the drivers are not well-trained. they can not speak and understand english. i saw that a lot passengers had communication problems while taking the bus. 3. the drivers do not follow the law. on the way driving, the drivers keep using mobile phone without any instrumental assistance. it has been prohibited im many states to use mobile phone while driving without using apparatus . 4. aggressive driving: speeding, illegal lane change, running red-light, irrespective to other drivers are very common. 5. dirty bus: the companies do not keep the bus clean at all. it is very likely to make the passengers sick. 6. defect instrument: most of bathrooms do not work properly. because the drivers are in hurry to go to the destination, they usually do not let the passengers to use the rest area service. for american people's safety, please re-justify this service or force the company to improve. thank you. *tr
EXTERIOR LIGHTING - HEADLIGHTS
01/27/20061
(cool blue head lights) can blind traffic. oncoming and when they are behind you i also wonder if some of these head lamps coming over from china really meet the dot requirements or are just stamped dot approve. note dates are on going. *jb

I recently read an article about driver complaints over xenon headlights, and i wanted to put in my 2 cents. my entire family has sensitive eyes, and we all need to look away whenever a xenon-lighted auto is approaching from the opposite direction. being in a metro area, where the 4-8 laned interstate road tends to twist and bend a bit, this grows increasingly dangerous. it has gotten to the point that i try not to drive after dark, and i am only 27 years old with good vision otherwise. i hope that you can offer some sort of mandation to remove the xenon headlights from the road. i have test driven a car with those lights, mainly to see how well they lit up the roadway, and they are quite helpful for that driver. but when it puts numerous other drivers in danger of crash (which i wholeheartedly believe has already happened), it becomes something deadly serious. i think they should be removed immediately.*ak
EXTERIOR LIGHTING - TURN SIGNAL
12/30/20071
When making an afterdark left turn at a 4 way intersection, it is impossible to see the turn signals of the oncoming traffic because of the intensity of the newer xenon headlights. the turn signals need to be located further from the headlights or find a way to greatly dim the headlights when facing other stopped traffic.*cn

POWER TRAIN

A courtesy bus of avis rent a car i rode today had a transmission problem that resulted in unintended braking (very strong, like emergency braking) that knocked me over while standing in the bus. the driver of the bus, luis, told me that he told his superiors repeatedly about the problem (that somebody would get hurt badly), but they told him not to mind. the license plate number of the bus is new york, 34463 ba. *tr

Test for frank -- test for frank what do you mean by events? weather, other crazy drivers, nothing happening at all -- just not clear for a regular end user the failure -- what happens if i don't think of it as a failure - just something annoying, or maybe i felt it was unsafe but not a failure. failure means that it just stopped working to most people - maybe it just worked differently than expected need more on what you want for frequency and consequences -- again not clear what you really mean by that or what would be useful - many questionaires provide ranges 0-1 rarely, 2-4 occasionally, 5-10, etc. consequences -- are you asking severity, personal injury, inconvience -- needs to be more helpful for the end user that makes the next question tough - what was done to correct -- maybe nothing because its not clear to me what is wrong -- listen to car talk and many times people know something is not quite right but they don't know what so they don't do anything. again -- is this really enough information -- actually maybe listening to car talk is a good way to figure out what to ask -- or how about talking to the two guys who do the show and ask them what questions they typically ask the calls ins to get a description of the problem -- i am not sure that the questions are really helping to get you the answer. many questionaires give ranges, options in pull downs, etc and then provide free form when the standard answers don't work -- this is just free form and you are putting a lot of pressure on me to figure out what you might want. i would also think that having some standard answers might actually help you more quickly sort the complaints to prioritze who to follow-up with to try and get more detail. what do you mean by property damage?
SEAT BELTS
11/06/20031
This morning i saw the study that was conducting on the installation of seatbelts in buses. as with all your test the results were inaccurate to say the least. contolled testing of an accident proves nothing except that the seat belt may work in that exact situation. as we all know, no two accidents are exactly the same and a simple difference in the suraface if the road can drastically change the outcome of an accident. seatbelts kill. i know of two people that are dead because they wore their seatbelts. in both cases the passengers were not wearing seatbelts and all walked away with mimimal cuts and abrasions and none went to the hospital. i know no one alive that wore a seatbelt. i have an old family friend that is a rn and has seen hundreds of people dead from wearing their seatbelt. i will admit that in a rear end collision at very very low speeds a seatbelt may help avoid a busted lip or bloody nose. the current design of seatbelts is dangerous. if you want me to wear a seatbelt then please mandate tyhe installation of a five point harness in all vehicles. this device can and will save lives. until then, your ads, your laws and your ignorance is doing nothing other than putting innocent people in their graves. i also want to condemn the commercial that is run here in tennessee. the radio comercial states that so many lives would have been saved if they had wore their seatbelt. it is impossible to prove that they would be alive. this commercial is misleading to say the least. so please push for a better restraint system for vehicles. a five point harness would save lives and i would wear it without hesitation. i am using todays date in the incident date box due to the fact i am unsure of the dates of the accidents that killed the two people. respectfully, daryl foote dayton,tn. *ak
