Defect SummaryOn some mini vans, sport utility and passenger vehicles, certain operating conditions can result in heat build-up between the countershaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission, eventually leading to gear tooth chipping or gear breakage.
Consequence SummaryGear failure could result in transmission lockup, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryOn vehicles with 15,000 miles or less, the dealer will update the transmission with a simple revision to the oil cooler return line to increase lubrication to the second gear. on vehicles with more than 15,000 miles, the dealer will inspect the transmission to identify gears that have already experienced discoloration due to overheating. if discoloration exists, the transmission will be replaced if discoloration is not present, the dealer will perform the revision to the oil cooler return line. the recall began on april 21, 2004, for pilot, odyssey, and mdx owners. owners of the accord vehicles will start receiving letters on june 28, 2004, and on june 29, 2004, for owners of the tl and cl vehicles. owners should contact honda at 1-800-999-1009 or acura at 1-800-382-2238.

 Transmission failure: i bought this car at 25k miles in sept 04. recall took place apr. 04. i was never told by the dealer, that a recall was made on the tranny for 7/100k. ( it was more important that they put the sale of the car over the safety of me and my child )i found out on the day my tranny went out on aug. 10 and they said i would have to pay $3,700 for the repair due to the warranty has expired. i was coming off the freeway at 65 mph when i exited and slowed down to approx. 35 mph, the car went crazy it was bucking and jumping and thrusting us forward in a jerking motion. i am female and had my toddler with me, i was scared, it was a strange behavior for a car, it felt like i was being hit from behind by another car. i couldn't shake the idea that we just got off the freeway. had this car done this while on the freeway!! my thoughts are we would of been badly hurt along with others. it was a matter of seconds that changed my outcome, along with the guardian angles. i am terrified to drive this car. i am unemployed and gave the dealer all the $$ i had. i have read on your nhtsa web site, of people having to replace up to three times. the design problem is not resolved, from the results, it is not resolved, yet these cars are on the roads and every other day someone's tranny is going out as well as them experiencing near injury conditions. i just don't understand!!! when tylenol was recalled...they removed the product from the shelf to ensure the safety of the public. why isn't this being done here as well. give us blue book value at the time of tranny failure and scrap these cars. because they are unable to come up with a reliable tranny fix in their design flaw, give us blue book value so we can drive a car that is more safe.

 2001 acura 3.2 tl needed transmission replaced in october 2006 due to a safety related defect. mileage on car at that point was about 61,000 miles. august 2010 transmission needed to be replaced again. the car has about 98,000 miles on it. so the transmission needed to be replaced when it had incurred 37,000 miles on it. the dealership will not replace it under the safety related defect. the dealership said originally that i had to pay almost $5,000 to get a new transmission. finally, after much hassle, they made me pay $1,005 and i had to pay $330 for a rental. the transmission failed due to the safety related defect and i should not have had to pay for it. clearly the transmission that they installed in 2006 was defective, just as the original transmission was defective. the transmission failed with little or no warning in august and i very easily could have had a crash. it locked up and i could barely move it while i was driving.

 2001 3.2tl acura. document sent regarding mediation on behalf of consumer regarding transmission problem *tgw the consumer stated while driving, the transmission made a loud bang noise. he pulled over to side of the road, but no noise was heard. he got back in the vehicle, put the vehicle in gear and began to proceed slowly, again no noise was heard. the next morning, he made arrangements to take the vehicle to the dealer. at the first stop sign, as he pulled into a lane and turned right, there was a grinding noise coming from the vehicle. when the consumer arrived at the dealer he found out, that a safety recall had been issued, but the work was previously done. the consumer was informed the transmission needed to be replaced at an estimated cost of $4,800.00 *jb

 One week ago i noticed that my car's transmission (2001 acura tl) was slipping between 2nd and 3rd gear as well as when shifting into reverse. i went to acura honolulu yesterday and they confirmed the issue was with the transmission slipping. they estimated that the repair costs would total $6600 (nearly what the car is worth). i did some online research and found out that this year's model has a faulty transmission and they had offered an extended warranty, however, because my car is over seven years old, they will not honor this warranty even though my mileage is within the accepted coverage of 100,000 miles. i'm now stuck with a car that is unsafe for me and other drivers on the road yet acura is unwilling to assist in the repair costs. i have contacted my dealership's service manager as well as their corporate offices, but they were unwilling to offer goodwill assistance. i take good care of my car and it is unfortunate that acura is willing to keep a bad product on the market while leaving the owners to pay ridiculous repair costs..

 We own a 2001 acura 3.2tl, which we bought in 2006 with 43k miles on it. it currently has a little more than 91,000 miles on it. about a month ago, we started experiencing transmission trouble - very sluggish shifting, and slippage between 2nd and 3rd gears, and heavy shaking/vibration of the car (until then it has been a fantastic vehicle). i googled it and found out that it was under a recall. however, when i called the local acura dealer, we were told we were beyond the 7 yr window, even though we have less than the 100k limit on the warranty. *tr

 2001 tl needs another transmission job, and acura is not willing to pay for this 3rd transmission as of yet. always loved the cars and when they sent me the recall notice in 2003/04 thought it was very honorable. when i drove the car to the dealership it nearly killed me as it dropped down to 2nd gear on the highway. i was able to get to the dealership in one piece and they fixed it. thought it was honorable that they proactively resolved situation. however, i noticed the gears slipping again just the other day and knew right away that it needed to be taken back. as i was driving it back a truck came feet away from crushing me as it dove down to 2nd gear. i was barely able to get it to the breakdown lane in time, i was scared @*(#(&$. had it towed there and they charged me $96 just to look at it. called me and informed me that since it's out of the 7 year/100,000 ml warranty that they cannot be responsible. it's under 100,000 miles, i'm original owner, and they are telling me they don't have record of fixing it from 03/04. (i brought it to them, but there computers only go back 5yrs?) they want to charge me 3,100, and claim that since they haven't serviced it in 5 yrs they don't know if it's been serviced properly. i moved away what the hell? this will be the 3rd transmission on it and it's under 100,000 mls??? i replace the tires less often, have a perfect driving record and both my brothers bought cars from acura of auburn ma. i easily could have died the other day and they showed no empathy. it's like they've seen this too many times that they've become jaded. i'm awaiting a call back from a case manager. if they don't help me i'm contacting the better business bureau/writing the attorney general. there is no way they should be profiting from such an obvious design flaw. i at one time loved the car, i will never buy another and will proactively tell people looking for a car to stay far far away. i've never been this angry and disappointed. gl to all owners!! *tr

 In march 2007 i purchased a 2001 acura 3.2tl, after a couple of months i noticed the transmission was slipping, i took the vehicle to a local acura dealer to find that the transmission needed to be replaced. after doing some investigating i found acura had recalls on the transmissions, mine was considered out of warranty because the miles exceeded the recall. (this occured in may 2007) in may of 2008 my transmission went completely, during this time frame the transmission would slip, down shift etc which could have caused an accident or even death with my family and me. i contacted acura hq and was given a case manager, who asked me to take the car back to the dealer repair shop, they would inspect it and contact me to see if they would possibly replace it (as a goodwill gesture)i was also told that i would never had received any notice of the recall because i was not the original owner, therefore since a repair was never done i feel that they should honor the recall, do the right thing and repair it. i received a phone call from the dealer stating acura would only cover 25%, i was told by the repair shop that the transmission was so far gone that they couldn't even tear it down to do an inspection of the gears. at this point and time i have had to pay for a car rental for one month, may have to put out at least $2500 for a repair and i am not a happy customer. to me a recall is a recall and i feel acura hq would want to keep satisfied customers. i have owned both a honda and acura prior to this and had approximately 250,000 miles on my other acura. i was told by acura hq, that if 2nd and 3rd gear were damaged they would replace the transmission, i faxed my paperwork from may 2007 which certainly stated this and am now told that this will not occur. what are my next steps to have acura shoulder the full responsibility

 On january 24, 2008 we sent a letter to richard colliver,executive vice president, auto sales at acura in response to a questionnaire. we bought a used acura 2001 3.2tl in november of 2005. it had a reconstructed title. in oregon this means there was no frame damage. the car had about 50,000 miles. i have put over 30,000 miles on the 3.2 tl since we bought it and had no problems until the transmission started slipping. after visiting with my mechanic and the local acura service department regarding the transmission we discovered there had been a recall on the transmission and was told this was done in january of 2005. at some point, acura also extended the warranty on the transmission because of an internal problem with the transmission that caused it to slip after it warmed up. i feel we have been left in the lurch with a transmission acura knows is faulty. the car was in an accident more than two years ago, before we bought it, and you are telling us the accident voids the warranty. if the accident caused the transmission problem i think it would have shown up a long time ago. i don?t think body work on a car ? no matter how extensive ? would necessarily add up to transmission failure. it seems to me to be an excuse for acura to push aside a problem they know is their responsibility. i have never received any response from mr. colliver. the man who did call and give us the run around again about the reconstructed title when faced with our logic then changed his tune and said the service department only said the transmission was slipping they did not say anything about it clunking. it does clunk into gear after it slips but evidently if the acura service did not designate that on the invoice they won't consider it. however, i believe if they had designated that very thing, there would have been another excuse. *tr

 2001 acura 3.2tl with transmission problems. consumer states that they received a recall for the transmission. dealer installed oil jet kit informed on the recall. they also say the transmission completely stopped working. *kb the consumer stated after the service was performed, he started to experience shift changes, and gear slippage. the transmission was replaced, however 2-4 months later the consumer began to experience erratic shifting and a feeling of gear slippage, but the consumer was told the transmission was working properly. the consumer stated on july 16, 2007 the transmission malfunctioned again when all of a sudden the engine increased and when he let off the cruise control, white smoke billowed from the rear of the vehicle. the consumer was able to pull over and had the vehicle towed. the service center informed the consumer that the transmission had failed. recall#04v176000 *jb

 I am writing to you to get some assistance on the problem i am having with honda/acura of usa. according class action settlement case no: rg 03099677, acura settled with all claimants to provide an extended warranty on transmissions on all class vehicles up to 109,000 miles. i own an acura tl 2001 . my car currently has 103k miles on it. i am perhaps the second or third owner of this vehicle. i recently experienced transmission problems related to the car's manufactured defect, namely with the faulty transmission. here is the nhtsa recall# and report below on the recall. nhtsa campaign id number : 04v176000 mfr's report date : apr 13, 2004 component: power train:automatic transmission potential number of units affected : 1099796 i got in touch with a local acura client services and took it to a local dealer. they looked at the car and the next day informed me that the extended warranty would not be covered since the car had been fixed previously at a repair shop and not by acura. according to their own records, my car has had the transmission fixed by acura in 2004. they refused to fix it despite the class action settlement that they agreed to in december of 2006. according to the independent repair shop i took my car to, the car had an original replaced transmission in it and not an aftermarket part. even by acura's own records, this car had the transmission replaced in 2004 at one of their dealerships and this is the transmission that failed. based on the lawsuit settlement therefore, they are responsible for fixing this transmission again since it is still under the extended warranty. the refused to assist me and i had no choice to get the car fixed by a local repair shop. i paid $2,292.47 to a local repair shop to get my car fixed that acura should have fixed under wrty. *tr

 On june 20th, we were exiting the toll booth to enter a major highway. the car failed to accelerate for about 10 to 15 seconds. we had our 1 and half year old son on board at the time this incident occurred. it was very dangerous and we were very lucky there was no car behind us. we brought the car to acura dealer nearby our house on june 25th, 2007. they did the diagnostic and told us that the transmission is on the way out. they recommended to us to replace the transmission. since the car is out of warranty, therefore acura will not cover the cost of the repair. we called the honda manufacturer a few times and asked them to fix the faulty transmission that was recalled back 2004. honda had denied our claim simply because our car is out of warranty. *jb

 I am the original owner of an acura tl 2001. at 40k miles as i was driving on a busy highway the car started jerking, i went from 40 mph to almost a complete stop in seconds. i took the car to the dealer and a new transmission was placed as it was under warranty. the car now has 108k miles. my husband was driving yesterday on a busy highway at 65 mph and the car did the same thing again. we had the car towed to the dealer today and the have informed us that it needs a new transmission again. my first concern in all this is the safety of my family. my husband could have been killed yesterday. he was on a busy highway in which the speed limit is 65 mph we feel very fortunate that the car behind him was far away enough that it did not run into him. looking back i was very lucky when it happened to me. this transmission problem can cause a very serious accident. my second concern is that the dealer says the warranty on the transmission is only good to 109k miles no matter what happens after that. i started doing research on this problem and found that many people have had to replace their transmissions three times. this leads me to believe that they are replacing them with faulty transmission which continues to be a hazard on the road. i feel that acura is not doing enough to protect the public and to resolve this issue. *nm

 We were returning on 10/02/06 from a 1,000 mile road trip to pa, on the way home (at night, in the pouring rain, with a toddler) we lost our transmission. this was on a 65 mph highway. the transmission slipped from 2000 rpm-5000 rpm and back a few times. by the time i could get safely pulled over, the car would not move. when i tried to drive it to move safely off of the highway, it was revving at 5000 rpm and moving a 2 mph. i obviously did not want to do more damage, so we sat on the highway in the middle of an off ramp until assistance arrived. we had it towed to a local garage. they called the next day to tell us that the transmission was gone and they have such a high failure rate that they go for $2000 even at salvage yards. they quoted us $3650 for a rebuilt, with a new computer (acura required!!!) and labor. the kicker is, we had only been over our warranty mileage by 3k. we were also given no warning (neither warning light nor driving) that there was a problem. i can not believe that honda/acura can have the #2 most reliable vehicle reputation. after simply searching for 2001 acura tl transmissions there were pages upon pages that have had their transmissions replaced as early as 25k and some have even had two to four replacements. how is this the #2 most reliable care company? i do not think a transmission should go at 100k, if maintained properly, there is no reason for it. i am disgusted that we just bought this vehicle last year and still owe 2 and a half more years on it!! even worse, since we bought the vehicle, we were never made aware of any recall by acura and were not able to bring it to acura (for free) to make sure everything was ok. had we been made aware when we took possession (i am sure acura has records of new owners as we just got a recall on our used 2002 chevy), we could have avoided this. right now, we are renting a car since we both work full time jobs, on top of a $3650 repair. *jb

 Honda claims to have a good reputation for building stable vehicles. i bought my acura brand new in 2001 and my transmission has failed only 100,000 miles later. that is worse than a old ford escort. honda has been attempting to deceive consumers by claiming they will address a transmission defect they identified since in 2004. i have seen dozens of complaints indicating that they are not honoring their commitment to consumers. a class action lawsuit is needed to prevent this company from abusing their customers. someone is going to loose their life if honda does not fulfill their obligation. they are giving consumers the run around by claiming that the inspection was allegedly completed and no breakage in the gears were detected so that the cost of replacing transmissions will not be incurred by them. the acura transmissions are now beginning to fail at a rapid pace and honda is refusing to replace them. please investigate this matter before people starts losing their lives because of this company's negligence. what they have been doing is attempting to stall the process by passing faulty transmissions as operable then waiting until the warranty expires to trap the consumer with the costs of repairs. this is unscrupulous and unethical behavior. if my car isn't repaired immediately i am going to invite media attention to this matter as i have evidence of this wrong doing. *nm

 As i was driving through the mountains in monteagle tennessee my transmission went out. my car actually started rolling back down the mountain, because i could not accelerate, but i was able to back it into the emergency lane as i was rolling backwards. i was frightened to death because trucks were coming up on me and it was night time. i was stranded for six hours in the mountains because my cell phone did not work and i did not know where i was because i was on a trip to chicago from atlanta. luckily a tennessee state trooper saw me and he got me a tow truck. i had to stay in a hotel for two days and i had it towed to pye acura in chattanooga tennessee. my car had 90000 miles at the time. pye acura replaced the transmission under the 100000 mile warranty with no problem and had me back on the road. hopefully this transmission will last, from what i have been hearing, even the re-manufactured transmissions are bad. i was still upset though because i lost a lot of money paying for a hotel and a tow truck, and i was going to chicago for my birthday so i missed my party. *jb

 Transmission locked almost causing vehicle behind to rear-end me. previously submitted report on this to nhtsa, but would like to enter acura's response. acura performed one of the transmission recalls, but refused to perform the other transmission recall due to the fact that my auto was previously salvaged, but at the time, now had a clean title. vehicles less than 10 years old from the first date of purchase should be honored whether or not all warranties have been voided, especially if it is dangerous. since they honored one recall, they should also honor the other.

 Complete transmission failure on 2 separate occasions within 3 years. 1st failure at 67,000 under normal freeway driving in 2002. while enroute to work in the morning, the transmission froze. 67.000 miles later at 134,000 the 2nd transmission froze under normal driving on the interstate. both times i was in a lot of traffic creating a very dangerous situation as i started immediate and unexpected slowing. on the initial failure, fortuntely a highway patrolman was able to safley stop traffic and get me off the freeway. i was later towed to valencia acura where they did replace the transmission under warranty. i was able to borrow my mothers car to get to and from work while they repaired my car. the most recent failure i was stuck 80 miles from las vegas, nevada in the hot desert. it cost me $480.00 to be towed to the local acura in las vegas and was stranded over night, losing a days work. i had only planned and was prepared for a day trip to primm, nevada on my off day. i was forced to rent a car for $50.00 and get a hotel room. the local dealer said the 2nd and 3rd gears had frozen and he would charge me $7000.00 to repair the transmisson. that was outrageous so i had to rent a truck and trailer at a total cost of $450.00 to tow my car back home. then i had to pay to have it towed to my dealer, valencia acura, where i purcased the car new and have had all my major services,except oil changes, done. most recently i had the 100,000 mile service done there. i was never told by acura that this model of car has a faultly transmission destined to unexpcted failure. i had no idea and would never expect they would replace one defective transmission with another that would fail at exactly the same mileage. currently, my car is sitting at the dealer with no known date of repair as acura is unwilling to repair or replace the current defective transmission under warranty.

 Vehicle suddenly slows down to approximately 15 mph almost causing the vehicle behind to rear-end me. in this particular incident, the vehicle behind me slammed on their brakes. nhtsa has a recall campaign id#04v176000 that my acura dealer will not honor since it was previously salvaged, but now has a clean title. spoke with customer service at honda motor and they also refused to honor the recall. i had the entire transmission replaced with acura's updated parts. i expect reimbursement and a written letter for dealer to repair transmission when it happens again, as it most likely will, according to the many complaints on your site.

 My acura 2001 3.2tl automatic transmisson was started by turning on the ignition. as soon as it was started, with transmission in park, the car took off in reverse. stepping on the brake didn't slow down the car, neither did shifting the gears. the only way the car stopped was when it hit the fence and house across the street. there was significant damage to the car, well over $7000. i called acura customer service and stated that acura should take responsibility for the incident. they didn't help at all. i wrote a letter to the ceo of american honda and they just referred it to acura customer service. they refuse to help at all when it is clear from all the incidents reported in the nhtsa website that there is a clear problem with acura transmissions. the nhtsa should take action since there are many incidents with honda and acura's. i am definitely afraid to drive the car. i don't see any reason to buy a honda or acura again. *ak

 My transmission went out on me the other night it was dark and pouring down rain. i was driving on a back road at 55 mph when all of a sudden the car went from 55 mph to 40 mph. i had already scheduled the car to go in the next morning, but realized that the car would not make it until the next morning. i turned the car around and headed for the dealership. i called and told them i was bringing it in. i road with my hazard lights on the way back to dealership. the car would only go as fast as 40 mph with the rpm running at 4500. this was scary for me because it was dark and raining and it was hard to see other cars. i got the car to the dealership and they gave me a loaner car. the next day i got a call from the dealer they said that they confirmed with their computer that the transmission needed to be replaced. i then said, i can't believe it. this will be the 4th transmission put into the car. they said, they have to send this transmission to acura and they would put a new transmission in the car. well from the web sites that i have read today says they are putting rebuilt transmission in brand new cars. they knew about this time bomb and that is why they extended the warranty. i think that the rest of america and world should know what acura is doing to their customers and i think they need to fix this problem right away, or give us our money back so we can go buy another car and not acura. *jb

 The wife started having transmission problems on 11/3/2003 in the morning. i called the dealership and told them of the problem. they set the appointment for 4 days later. by noon time the transmission would only go into reverse and we called to have it towed to the dealership. the next day they said that someone may have gotten soda down in the shifter and that is what they were going to check out. i called them around 3:00 and they said that they were now going to replace the transmission and they said that the new transmission has the problem fixed. i am very mad at the service dept. of the acura dealership, 1. they know of the problem and would let my wife and our one year old ride around for 4 days like that when you read that some people have the transmission. lock up on them on the highway. are they just trying to save the money on a rental car? 2. they know of the problem and tried to say that soda got into the shifter. 3. is the problem fixed liked i was told or are they just putting in another rebuilt junk transmission for us to have problems later down the road. they are trying to cover up the problem and they should recall the problem and fix it. we tried to call my wife's girl friend who has a cl and let her know about it before something bad happens to her. acura and nhtsa should all do the proper thing and recall the cars today. *la

 I took my 2001 acura 3.5 tl to acura of riverside complaining of the transmission slipping. initially, they could not document but totally popped out of gear the following day. they were able to get a code & replaced the transmission at 12,500 miles. my complaint is (1)the dealer tried to tell me that this was an extremely unusual occurrence & that these kinds of thing happen to all makes of cars (2) after ordering the replacement transmission, they tried to give me back the car until the replacement transmission came in. i refused and told them that i felt the car was not safe. after i refused to take the car back until the transmission was replaced, they decided to place me a rental car. their daily allowance for the rental was $30 per day which meant i had to pay more for a bigger, safer car as that amount would only pay for a small car. today in the l.a. times is an article discussing the failure of transmissions on the acura 3.5 tls and the refusal of honda to recall these cars because no one has been seriously injured yet. my concern is, that in my situation, the dealer would not be honest about the problems honda is experiencing with these cars. moreover, i was basically lied too & told that they hadn't heard of any other transmission problems with 2001 acuras. as previously stated, they also tried to give the car back, unrepaired, while waiting for a replacement transmission. i am extremely unhappy with the dealership & acura over the transmission problem. this car is leased & i would like to give the car back (although the transmission has been replaced) as i don't feel that the car is the quality vehicle that i felt i was purchasing. i do not trust the safety of the car considering how dangerous the transmission failure could have been had i been on a busy s. california freeway.*ak

 I was passing a vehicle in my 3.2tl when suddenly the wheels seemed to have locked and my car came almost to a screeching halt. the next day i found out that the transmission failed. this is a very dangerous situation. the vehicles behind me could have easily rear-ended me and caused a chain reaction pile-up. luckily the car did not stop completely, so i was able to recover from the incident without personal injury and/or property damage. it angers me that acura is not owning up to the aparent transmission troubles that have been occurring. just a few weeks ago, my supervisor informed me that his transmission failed on his 3.2cl at only 18k miles. another concern is that the warranty is 4 years/50k miles and acura needs to extend the warranty until they figure out the problem with these transmissions. what am i supposed to do when the warranty ends? acura needs to be held accountable.*ak

 Many acura 3.2 cl owners have been reporting transmission failures, as well as acura 3.2 tl owners, who have the same transmission units in their cars, and believe that this may be a safety hazard. if the transmission failure occurs while driving the vehicle, the vehicle sometimes slows down abruptly, especially when the driver is accelerating. for example, when trying to pass someone, the transmission will suddenly leave the engine revving high, but the car wont actually accelerate and actually slows down, sometimes very noticeably. this can cause someone to rear end you if theyre coming up from behind you not expecting you to suddenly come to halt for no apparent reason. also, it seems that honda/acura may have known about this problem with its automatic transmissions since the release of the honda v6 accord, which is the platform on which the acura cl and tl models are based. the cl/tl models have increased horsepower over the accord, especially the type s models, and these transmissions may not be able to handle the extra power.
