Vehicle becomes immobile and locked up when access/start control unit fails in steering column. engine will not start, ignition cannot be turned on, and in some cases the key cannot be removed from the ignition switch. steering wheel and transmission shift lever locks in current position, making towing almost impossible without specialized equipment. audi is well aware of this increasingly common problem and issued a tsb on 11/25/2008, #2012483/5 to address the problem by replacing the immobilizer control unit with an revised and improved unit. repair costs exceed $1500 when car is no longer covered by warranty. for something so important to the safety and use of the vehicle, this failure is unacceptable on every level. a recall should be issued for all models that do not have the improved control unit. |
