Picking my son up from school and no reverse. no indications anything wrong put into reverse acts like its in neutral. absolutely no reverse. drove home and had vehicle towed to transmission shop. went online and shocked to see the number of no reverse failure online. the no reverse org in 2009 is no longer up but shocked how many people posted the exact problem! bmw north america or corporate says they can't do a recall and to notify nhtsa. ethically, we both know they should fix these faulty drums they outsourced to gm and did not tell anyone. please recall the no reverse failure for the 2000 model, thanks for recalling the sub-frame cracking. bmw service centers are a rip off and never tell the owner whats really going on. i am an original owner, have meticulous service records and feel the us needs to make them stand behind their product. please help us. getting stuck in a dangerous parking lot at night would not be safe? please ask bmw to fix their faulty drum.

I was picking up my daughter from school around 4:30pm on april 17, 2012 and when i put the car into reverse to back into a parking spot...the car had no power. the transmission just reved up like it was in netural. i could not get the car to back up. i thought maybe i had it in the wrong gear but no it was in reverse. i put the car back into drive and went around the corner to wait for her. when i tried to reverse out of the parking spot it still didn't have any power. thankful the car rolled back far enough to get out of the parking spot. once i got home i had to be pushed into my parking stall because once again the reverse was not working. i haven't had any major problems with my car, the miles are low 125,000 and it gets regular maintence check ups.

The car had been running fine. went to leave a friends house and iti would not go in reverse. had to be pushed backwards, put into drive and foward gears worked fine. drove about 11 miles, stopped and put it in reverse, and it worked. couple days later i went to back out of the driveway, and reverse stopped working again. the reverse works on and off. this is extremely dangerous because a traffic situation could arise where reverse is needed to avoid a serious accident. research has shown that this is an extremely common problem with these cars, yet bmw has failed issue a recall. please help with this.

I have a bmw 323i and the reverse went out. looks like a common problem with this year make and model. i am dumbfounded that there has not been a recall on this piece of s#!% transmission. bmw has lost me as a customer, since they dont stand behind their product when so many others are having the same problem. backing out onto a two lane, 55 mph hwy my son and i were nearly killed since the transmission failed. i thought it slipped into neutral. no it failed!

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. while driving approximately 70 mph the contact attempted to accelerate further but the vehicle would not accelerate. the vehicle stopped responding to the accelerator pedal and rolled to a stop. the vehicle was shut off and upon restart the failure continued. the vehicle was towed to the contacts residence. the vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed and was not repaired. the failure and current mileages were 138,000.

I had no major problems with my 2000 bmw 323ci until today. went to reverse out of a parking space, car would not move. put the car in park and tried reversing again, nothing happened. turned the car off, waited a few minutes, turned it back on, put it in reverse, nothing happened. had to push it out of the parking spot and drove forward with no problems. made it back to my work, parked in the spot and tried reversing to see if it worked, and it did. random, weird. called my auto mechanic and he said that this is typical of bmws when the transmission is going bad. researched other similar occurrences and it seems that this a common issue for bmws ranging from late 90s to early 2000s. *tr

I have a 2000 bmw 323i with zero accidents. there are 88,000 miles on it, and suddenly the reverse gear is not working. after doing some research online, i have found that this is a common occurrence for this very make and model. i contacted bmw immediately and not only did they say that there is no recall for this transmission, but that there was nothing they would do about my situation. this is a ridiculous problem to have at only 88,000 miles. i would like to submit formal notice of bmw's defective transmission. *tr

My bmw 323i was working fine yesterday and i get in it this morning and it refuses to do reverse. when i put it in reverse it just sounds like it's in neutral and i am revving up the engine. i have to get a new transmission or th part repaired but it's still going to cost 2000. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 bmw 323i. the contact placed the gear into reverse to back into the driveway. suddenly, the engine began to rev, but the vehicle did not move. he placed the gear back into drive and the vehicle moved forward. he placed the gear into reverse again and the engine revved. the contact exited the vehicle and pushed it into the driveway. the dealer stated that the snap ring failed out of the clutch drum, preventing the vehicle from moving in reverse. the vehicle has not yet been repaired. through online research, the contact found numerous complaints on the same defect. he believes this should be repaired by the manufacturer. the current and failure mileages were 90,450. updated 6/9/08 *cn

Just yesterday my reverse went out on my wife's 2000 bmw 323i without warning. after doing a bit of research i am shocked to find that this is a common problem for bmw's of this era. this car only has 62,000 miles on it and has been cared for extremely well. i was also shocked by the amount of complaints associated with this problem and that bmw chooses to do nothing about it in the form of a recall. i have been a proud bmw owner and was a huge fan of the product. lexus/infiniti here i come. let's hope that bmw does the right thing and helps those of us suffering from a sub-standard product.

Bmw 323i 2000 at 55tou miles suddenly it will not reverse to my garage. i research the internet and found out there hundreds of people complaining of no reverse in their bmw. i called the bmw executive office in new jersey (201-307-4000) but not willing to do anything. i also mentioned hundreds of unhappy people on the website but still will not give assistance. with many bmw owners complaining no reverse on their car this should been recalled because of defective transmission. here is the website of unhappy bmw owner's....http://www.noreverse.org/complaints_2009q3.html.. i appreciate it so much and other owners if you help us make bmw recognize 'defective transmission-automatic)

I have a 2000 bmw 323ci and the reverse gear stopped working all of a sudden. sometimes it comes back and starts working again, but then it stops working again. i went to a transmission shop and they said it would cost about $3000. bmw said they did not know about this problem and that i needed a new transmission. please help!

I purchased a 2000 bmw 323i on tuesday march 14 from a private owner who had meticulous records of maintanence and vehicle only had 97k miles. two days later, the reverse went out but the other gears were fine. i took the car to a mechanic and said that i would be needing a new transmission. the bmw dealer is going to charge me $7000 to fix. i have only owned the car for 2 days and now is not drivable. i went online to search if this was a commom problem and was astonished to see hundreds if not thousands of complaints about the same exact problem for the same make and model vehicle. bmwna is not doing anything about this. this is clearly a trasmission defect and should be recalled.

I own a 2000 323i w/140k miles. i pulled into a convenience store (head in). upon leaving, i put my car into reverse and nothing happened. i thought maybe i accidentally put it in neutral, but no. so i put it back into park, turned the car off and removed the key. i tried again with the same result. it would not go into reverse. drive worked just fine. there was no warning whatsoever. no lights, sounds, or indication that anything was wrong. i am really ticked off. i had to get pushed back and then i could drive off. recall please.

We brought our daughter a 2000 323i bmw, a few weeks after purchasing the car the car will not shift into reverse. this was a gift and our daughter was so happy, we spent a good amount of money on this car, it is in excellant condition, only has 50k miles and was garage kept and was never drove in the winter, and now it is sitting in the garage and cant be driven. i would like to become a member of a class action, this is a issue that has been going on for years,a dn bmw needs to recall the cars and fix the problem. our daughter is so disppointed she cant drive her car. the bmw dealer that looked at the car said it was going to be 4800.00 for the transmission and they can not guartneed that the new transmission will not do the same thing, and i dont want to have it fixed and it do it again and have to keep repairing the car. i know after all of this i will never buy another bmw. if anyone knows a classaction suit please email me at sbarth @woh.rr.com.

My 2000 bmw 323i at times will not go into reverse. my car has approximately 155,000 miles. i did take it for repair and was given an estimate of about $5000 to replace my transmission. with all the complaints that i have seen with this particular problem with these cars bmw should definitely do a recall and offer to replace these faulty transmissions
08/15/2010109156
I am the original owner of 2000 bmw 323i with 109k miles. one fine day the reverse gear on the car just stopped working without any warning or noise. i took the car to the bmw dealership who did the diagnostic and told me there's a transmission failure and that the new transmission will cost $5,880. i then went online and found a site noreverse.org and was shocked to see numerous bmw owners reporting the same issue. i called bmw customer relations and they refused to offer any assistance nor did they own up to the problem, stating that it's out of warranty. given the number of complaints received by nhtsa (175 as of september 5th, 2010 for 2000 323i under the category of power train automatic transmission) and a huge number of complaints listed on noreverse.org and other consumer sites, bmw ought to have done a recall of these defective transmissions (zf5hp19) and set an example for a responsible global brand they stand for.

2000 bmw 323i transmission will not go in reverse.
04/09/2010158000
I have an issue with my 2000 bmw 323i sedan e46, on multiple occasions the reverse all of a sudden goes out, no noise, no warning, it just doesn't clutch reverse in the clutch box. luckily i've been only in a park idol position. i would have to push my car to back out and it's really frustrating. and from researching, my bmw 323i transmission is made by gm, who which did a recall on there transmissions and so did cadillac because they have used the same transmissions as bmw 323i. i'm surprised bmw usa hasn't done a safety recall yet. i want to get this fix, but bmw can only swap a transmission which cost $5500.
04/13/201062000
I own a 2000 bmw 323i. today the transmission stopped going into reverse. there was no prior warning, no prior failures, no slipping, etc. i got to work, attempted to back into a parking spot, and the engine just reved - no movement. looks like a common problem. the repair will require a new transmission and the dealership quoted me $7000. i'm glad i didn't get into a traffic situation that required me to back up to save my life or someone elses. i called the dealership in roanoke va, they said there is no recalls and i called bmw of north america and they sad the same. 800-831-1117

Car was running fine then reverse just stopped working. car can go forward but no longer has reverse. my mechanic diagnosed the car and i was told it has transmission failure. also he made me aware that there are numerous of complaints and lawsuits on bmw due to this same problem. bmw should have a recall regarding this issue.
01/10/200975000
When leaving work, my car failed to go into reverse so i could pull out. i had to push the car out and took it to my mechanic who told me that this was a very common problem for this make of car. he told me that i would probably need to replace the transmission which i can not afford top do. after driving the car and making sure that i can always pull forward out of parking spots i can sometimes get the reverse transmission to engage and work properly. this seems to happen randomly and then eventually the sme problem will happen again. i have researched this online (noreverse.org) and found that this is a very common problem with these cars (2000 bmw 323i) and that bmw is aware of this and takes no responsibility. the transmissions in these cars is provided by gm, and is installed in cadillacs as well for which a recall has been issued. no recall has been issued for bmw. i feel this is a potentially major safety issue . my car has always been properly maintained and the fact that this could happen with 75,000 miles and having to replace the transmission is appalling!
03/01/2010600001
2000 bmw 323i, automatic transmission, reverse just stopped working, i have read all the complaints on 2000 bmw with no reverse and i cannot afford to spend over $5000 to repair it. the transmission is a 5l40e manufactured by gm for bmw. there is a weakness in the reverse clutch housing apparently it is machined to thin for a snap ring groove and it eventually breaks. the new clutch housing is modified to be thicker so someone is aware of the issue but bmw refuses to take responsibility for this engineering failure. *tr

For no apparent reason, my 2000 bmw 323i, which had about 35,000 miles on it, suddenly could not go into reverse. i took it to a repair shop which specializes in bmws and they told me this was a common problem and that i had to replace the transmission. so i did; it cost almost $5,000. *tr

I have a 2000 bmw 323i, got no reverse. i was on the middle of a busy street when my reverse didn't work!!!!....i had to keep going forward, i would have crashed if it wasn't for a good samaritan who slammed his brakes behind me and helped me push my car into position so i can drive forward. *tr

I have a 2000 323i bmw and my reverse gear just randomly gave up. i cannot use the accelerator when reversing. i have seen several complaints and this is a costly issue. there should be a recall on these bmw's looks like the 1999 and 2000 models. *tr

I own a 2000 bmw 323i with 160,000 miles on it. i just purchased the vehicle 1 1/2 ago. since my purchase i have had several issues with it . first the alternator went-cost 520.00, then leak in radiator, replaced several hoses plus repairs $ 500.00 and now on 01-29-2010, i was doing errands , came out turned my car on , put the car in reverse and noticed that it wouldn't , it just acted like it was in neutral.... now i towed car and called several repair shops cost in the range of $2500-6000 for either rebuilt, new or from a salvaged car yard. i had no indication, no noise or sound out of the ordinary. the car did drive forward. i need help. *tr

I own a 2000 bmw 323i and have encountered the infamous no reverse issue as has been experienced and reported by many folks now (see http://noreverse.org). this stems from a faulty reverse drum in the transmission and should be fixed by bmw as it really does appear to be a common failure. *tr

2000 323ci has 94,000 on the dot (less than 10k per year put on it), all maintenance done as required/scheduled. yesterday, 12/05/09, i drove the car all day without any indication of a problem and last night i got in the car, put it in reverse, and it tried to back up then acted like it was in neutral. managed to get the car out of the parking spot and it drove forward just fine. i got the car home, attempted to back up again and it tried to back up 2 or 3 times then acted like it was in neutral again! repairs will be between $2000-$5000 for a car that was immaculately kept. apparently this is a known concern by bmw and they refuse to offer assistance to vehicle owners. *tr

Hello i bought a 200 bmw 323i and the car was working perfectly fine. after one week the car wont go in reverse.this is a very common failure of the transmission in 3 series and the deal wants $5000 for a new tranny or to rebuild it which is crazy considering i just bought the car. *tr

No reverse in 2000 bmw 323i with 70k miles. reverse went out suddenly with no prior problems or warnings. fortunately, i just arrived home and tried to park my car in reverse into my garage when i noticed the reverse acted like it was in neutral. took to auto body shop $3300.00 to replace transmission completely. mechanic promised the car shouldn't have that problem ever again after replacing the transmission. *tr

No reverse in 2000 bmw 323i with 92k miles. reverse went out suddenly with no prior problems or warnings. bmw dealer says hasn't been an issue. the dealers solution is to replace transmission completely, approx. $5,500. from looking at the number of complaints on the web concerning this issue, it seems bmw should recall this problem. i was fortunate enough to be in my garage when it quit working, but that would not have been the case just a few hours prior. *tr

09/29/2009215001
I own a 2000 bmw 323i with only 21,500 miles on it. the car is kept in an interior garage and driven mostly within the city. until two days ago, i had no problems with the car and never had any indication that there was a problem with the transmission (or anything else for that matter). i backed out of my garage, drove to a store, did my shopping and returned to the parking lot. i turned the ignition on as normal, put my foot on the break and shifted the gear into reverse and tried to back out, but the car would not move. it acted as if it were in neutral but the dashboard clearly read that i was in reverse. there was no warning, no indicator light went on, no noise or sound out of the ordinary. the car did drive forward, so i waited until the cars in front of me left and drove my car to the bmw dealership where i got the car. they refused to give me an estimate of a transmission repair or replacement until i gave them $300 to perform a diagnostic test. i declined and brought it to a local transmission shop near my home. the mechanic removed a pan and showed me the liquid which was blackish in color. he said that it had aluminum powder in it, indicating that something inside probably broke and caused burning. i am currently in the process of deciding what to do next: either get the transmission replaced or have it rebuilt. bmw of north america and the bmw dealership i got the car from refuse any financial responsibility for the repair. *tr

In the middle of a 3-point turn, vehicle was shifted into reverse. vehicle shuddered and the reverse gear failed. given that my car would no longer operate in reverse, i was trapped in the middle of oncoming traffic. of course, i was involved in a collision because i was unable to move my car from the roadway. this is a common and widespread issue regarding reverse gear failure. bmw is aware of the problem. this transmission is produced by gm, and is installed in cadillac cars as well (for which a recall was issued). no recall has been issued by bmw. *tr

Bmw 323 lost reverse without warning! without warning, my 3000 bmw 323i with 62,300 miles had no reverse. car was taken to a transmission garage. problem was identified as a broken reverse drum that shed metallic parts throughout the transmission requiring a overhaul. cost $2800. *tr

'2000 bmw 323i, 108k, transmission would not engage in reverse. engine revved up, but no engagement. this is so far intermittent and has taken place three times within 1 week. all other gears appear to work fine. all instances i had to manually push car out of packing spot. took to repair shop and reverse worked at the time so could not determine fault. i have since seen many identical reports listed on web. *tr

I am the original owner of a 2000 bmw 323i with 93k miles. my car has never missed a servicing. yesterday, while parked, it would not go in reverse. there was not warning that anything was failing. i took it to an authorized bmw specialist, and they told me the transmission failed. they quoted me a price of $5,520 to install a rebuilt transmission from bmw. i have read online of hundreds of very similar complaints, especially with bmw 2000 323i. i am seeking information on the class action lawsuit settled in nj in 10/08, mdl 1922. bmw has known about this problem. apparently, the transmission was built by gm. the same transmission was installed in the cadillac. when the same problem occurred, gm recalled all the cadillac's. bmw should do the same thing. a transmission not going in reverse is a major safety issue. please help! *tr

I got into my 2000 bmw 323i, and put the car into reverse but the did nothing but idle. i've bought the car used about 6 months ago with 92k mi, and i now has 100k. the car clearly has been maintenance meticulously and there was no warning of any kind prior to this. *tr

My 2000 bmw 323i automatic transmission had no reverse at 72,000 miles. all the other gears work fine. there was no signs prior to the failure. i had the transmission replaced and cost me $3000. its been 4 years since and still no recall despite the hundreds of complaints with the same problem and situation. bmw outsourced this transmission to gm who used the same one on their escalades which also failed. gm replaced their transmissions, but they wouldn't replace bmw's because it was outsourced....it would be real nice if something was done and i get back some of this money some day... *tr

I had dropped my wife off at work after lunch and was backing out of a parking stall. i put the car in reverse, let off the brake and was watching for cars behind me. i went to give it a little gas to continue backing up and it revved up as if it was in neutral. i stopped, put the car in neutral, then back in reverse and still nothing. no gear or nothing. i drove home in drive just fine. i put it in the garage. i have tested it since and it does nothing in reverse, but drives just fine in drive. *tr

I purchased a 2000 bmw 323i from carmax in hartford ct. when i purchased the vech it had a little less than 47,000 miles. on sunday 6-28-09 i attempted to back the vech out of a parking space but to my surprise my vehicle would not move, the reverse gear stopped working. afterwards i contacted the dealer to voice my concern, to no avail they were rude and not helpful at all. i then conducted some research on line and to no avail i found hundreds of complaints about the 3 series bmw model. i am shocked that bmw could make such a faulty product. please look into this. thanks in advance. *tr

I bought a 2000 bmw 323i in 2004 that had been maintained immaculately. at 72,000 miles, the car simply would not go into reverse. my father took the car to bmw dealership closest to my home and they said it was a transmission problem and repairs were going to be about $5000 for a new transmission. fortunately, he is mechanically savvy, and found a mechanic to repair the transmission for about $2000. after reading online that bmw will do nothing to help replace/repair the thousands of cars that this problem has occurred in, i have to say i am severely disappointed. what once was my dream car has turned into a nightmare. *tr

One day in the month of october 2008 my 2000 bmw 3 series with over 100k miles would not reverse, although it would go into drive and move forward. later that day i was able to put the car in reverse and it moved backwards, then hours later when i put the car in reverse again it did not work. this occurred intermittently until a week later it would not go in to reverse at all. the vehicle was evaluated by a bmw specialist, who stated that it needed a new transmission because the reverse gear did not work. there's no known reason why this happens, it just does. this is a defect in the design. i was quoted over $6000 to replace my transmission, and i have parked my car since then, yet i make a car payment every month. *tr

2000 year model bmw 323i reverse went out at 79,000 miles. no warning, drive still operates fine. no help from bmw. i have had numerous vehicles over 33 years of driving and only one failed before 100,000 miles, a dodge grand caravan and dodge took care of it. this is sad - there should be recourse. i am not asking for a free replacement since the vehicle is 9 years old but there should be some type of support from bmw. this is supposed to be a sealed unit with german engineering no wonder they lost the war. *tr

I own a 2000 bmw 323ci for a little over a year now and i've had to put about $6,000.00 in repairs into it but all in small problems. last week, with no warning my car would not go into reverse. i went online to see how much a transmission would cost and to my surprise i found thousands of people with the exact same problem and in all cases bmw never admits to a faulty part and a recall on there transmission. i have always taken my car to the bmw dealer and have gotten my work done there but not this time. it would cost me nearly $8,000.00 to fix it there. *tr

My 2000 bmw 323i (95,000 miles) would not shift into reverse. took it to bmw dealership to find out what the problem was. the dealership said it was the transmission and it would have to be replaced, costing $6000. did some research on the internet and was surprise to find out that the reverse gear failure is a common problem with the bmw cars during my year. read thousands of complaints from bmw customers with the same reverse failure problem. the company, bmw, is aware that this is a common problem, possibly a defect, and offers no alternate solution other than to replace the entire transmission at a very costly price when the only problem is the reverse gear and everything else works fine. knowing that i am not the only one suffering with this expensive problem i feel that the bmw should stand by the quality of their product. it does not make sense to purchase a new transmission, as this is our only recourse according to the dealership, when the reverse failure will more than likely happen again! thank you very much. *tr

Car fail to engage to reverse while stuck in an situation. with the zf transmission on the 2000 3 series, the reverse drum is made of aluminum and very easy to crack, each time it cracks, you are not able to engage the car in reverse at all. to have this problem fixed, you either need new transmission or i heard there is a new reinforced drum that fixed the issue, my concern is over thousands of people have the same issue and each time it costs 4 or 5 thousand to fix because of the faulty part inside the transmission, why are there still no recalls yet? this is a pretty dangerous situation when your car can't move backwards and you are stuck in the lot, please read my reference link, as this is my 3rd transmission. thanks. http://www.noreverse.org http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html. *tr

A year ago, my gas gauge sensor went out. the car had less than 100,000 miles on it. today, my 2000 bmw 323i has 111,000 miles on it and the vehicle will not drive in any gear without a grinding sound. i almost got killed by a car behind me because i could suddenly not accelerate at a stop light and i had to get out to push the vehicle to safety. within the past few months the car would drive, but only when it was warm. now it is completely inop. this car has been well maintained! it would cost me over $4000 to get a new transmission and i still over $6000 on the car. despite thousands of complaints regarding the 2000 bmw 323i transmission failure, bmw refuses to do anything. i currently have no operable vehicle and i still have to maintain my auto loan payments and find alternate transportation to work. i have spent over $3500 in additional repairs to this vehicle on brakes, new catalytic converter sensors, trailing arm, ball bearings, etc. *tr

I have a bmw 323i that i bought new back in 2000. this has been a secondary car that i have taken very good care of. recently, at 43,000 miles as i was trying to reverse, the car just idled as if it were in neutral. once i pushed it out of the parking space it would drive forward only. no warning whatsoever on the dash. upon further review of this issue i found a website called noreverse.org. apparently this is a very frequent occurrence with this car that bmw doesn't want to acknowledge. i took my car to the dealer and they told me that because the car is beyond warranty they can't help me. i told them about the complaint website and they told me that they had never heard of it. i can't believe they aren't willing to make this right. this is a defective part without a doubt. *tr

The automatic transmission failed on my 2000 bmw 323 wagon, after having traveled only 66,151 miles. the transmission will not go into reverse. i purchased the car as a certified pre-owned bmw in 2002 from winlsow bmw of colorado springs, co. the car has always been garaged and professionally serviced. following the reverse transmission failure, gault bmw of endicott ny (nearest to me now) offered that there were no open campaigns to fix the defective transmission and estimated (over the phone) that the repair would cost between $4,000-6,000 at their dealership. gault bmw's service manager recommended a specific local independent transmission repair shop as a cheaper alternative. the repair cost me $3,246.18. i was without the use of the car from 13 dec 08 to 14 jan 09. *tr

My 2000 bmw 323i has 98.5k miles on it. after working perfectly fine it has now failed to go in the reverse gear. it uses an automatic zf 5hp19 transmission. upon taking it to a repair shop and talking to other bmw owners it seems this is a common mechanical failure in the transmission due to faulty workmanship. i service this car on a regular basis and take extreme care with it in all aspects. my complaint is in regards to bmw not issuing a recall on this product when it is common knowledge the transmission is faulty. the cost quoted to me from bmw is $5500. bmw has lost my business forever. *tr

1.i attempted to put my car in reverse in a parking lot that was completely flat. 2. the bmw 323i refused to go into the reverse gear, instead changing the car into the neutral gear. this is repeated every time i attempt to reverse. i must now push my car out of parking spots and avoid situations that would get me stuck. 3. i chose to replace the transmission with a rebuilt transmission. otherwise i could have had the transmission rebuilt, replacing the broken clutch drum with a new clutch drum. *tr

Last week my car quit going in reverse leaving me stranded. this car has 100,000 miles and has been extremely well maintained as i have been the original owner. this is apparently a common problem with 99/00 bmws and the zf automatic transmissions. the transmission has to be completely rebuilt at a cost of over $3000. the fact that this is such a common failure and can put individuals at risk is unconscionable. imagine a transmission going out during a u-turn where reverse is needed to safely move from oncoming traffic? *tr

Recently my car quit going in reverse as i was backing out of a parking space. luckily i was on a slight incline & there were no oncoming cars because i would have been hit as i rolled very slowly into the road like i was in neutral. this car has 85,000 miles and has been extremely well maintained. i have since learned that it is a common problem with 1999-2006 bmws. there are 2 different bmw transmissions made by zf, and both have a part called a drum that is too weak to last very long, and the manufacturer has started making a stronger replacement part. my transmission had to be completely rebuilt in order to replace that part, and the debris from the broken drum has to cleaned out. it took 3 days & cost over $3000 to rebuild. *tr

On 7/23/08 my 2000 bmw 323i with 78,000 miles in excellent condition refuse to move in reverse. i had a mechanic across the street from my office take a look at it and said the transmission needed to be replace. i have well maintained my car and was shocked that there were no problems leading up to this. it just refused to move. i did call bmw at the request of my mechanic to see what they could do for me without the warranty. i googled my information and was shocked to find that this was an ongoing problem with my year and make of the car....even some people put the date of purchase such as 7/2000 which was my exact date. odd that there are so many 323i's with the same problem......won't move in reverse. the gentleman at bmw said he heard nothing of this problem and would do some research and get back to me. he did within the hour and said no such problem existed and told me it would cost me $5800 for a new transmission. there has to be some justice done here. these companies can not be supplying faulty materials and be expecting the consumer to pick up the tab because of their sloppiness. i feel very ripped off by bmw whom i have said numerous times that this is one of the best cars i have ever owned.......i now know they are not fair players. they should fess up to their mistakes. *tr

2000 323i with 92000 miles on it. backed into garage the night before, left for work next morning and stop at local store. came out and it wouldn't go into reverse. it just sat there like it was in neutral. no recourse from bmw. just like other owners of bmw transmission problems, we shouldn't have to front the cost of a defective transmission that bmw installed in there vehicles. there needs to be a directive coming from the feds to have bmw replace these transmissions at no cost the owners. *tr

2000 bmw 323i with 93,000 miles. without warning the reverse stopped engaging (like it is neutral). the vehicle continues to be fine in the forward gears. after checking with several friends and the bmw enthusiast website i have found this is a pervasive problem with this years model. this transmission and the cars it is installed in should be recalled. *tr

Sudden failure of reverse gear in automatic transmission. the transmission in my 2000 bmw 323ci failed without warning while backing. the car has 93,000 miles on it. apparently this is a well known problem (http://www.noreverse.org) that is being ignored by bmw. *tr

After 105,000 miles, the my 2000 bmw 323i sports wagon all of a sudden - and without any warning - lost its reverse gear. the car was driven carefully and well-maintained. after researching the problem on the internet, i quickly learned that there are thousands or other consumers with year 2000 3-series bmw experiencing the same transmission problems. having the transmission replaced by a bmw dealership costs more than $6,000. apparently, a design flaw with the zf transmission (5hp19) is to blame for the loss of the rear gear, but bmw denies knowledge of a widespread transmission problem, nor do they take responsibility to have the faulty transmissions replaced - under whatever kind of warranty. since i bought this car used 2.5 years ago, i have no chance to hold bmw or my dealership responsible, or -at least- negotiate a more acceptable resolution of the zf 5hp19 transmission problem. *tr

I've owned my 2000 bmw 323i for over 5 years now (bought it used) and it's been a superb car. i maintained it perfectly with oil changes on time, and it was in pristine condition. despite my attention to detail, a few days ago, the reverse simply stopped working. we took it to shop and they said it was internal transmission and it happened a lot with bmws between 1999 and 2001, and bmw didn't admit there was a problem. i now have to pay a lot of money to get this fixed and am very upset with bmw right now. i visited several sites where people all over the world have had the same problem as i, and bmw doesn't admit the problem. i'm writing this so that bmw can persuade me to buy another bmw in the future as i definitely will not ever buy another one after this incident. im very let down with bmw and it's ultimate driving machine. *tr

I've experience the common no reverse in my 323 bmw. the car has been running great and after a weekend away i go to drive my car and it won't reverse. it acts like it is in neutral and coasts. i have only driven my car once since then and it failed the 4 times i tried to reverse. i have contacted my local bmw repair shop and they have informed me that i need to replace the entire transmission. after some researching i have discovered that non bmw repair shops have been able to repair the reverse drum for $4,000 less. this apparently is common defect that needs to be recalled and taken care of by bmw. or they should at least be able to repair the reverse drum and not make people purchase a new transmission so they make more money. i'm sure there are plenty of people out there paying for $5,000+ to get a new transmission when there are other options available that bmw is not making an option through their dealerships or repair shops. *tr

As reported by many, many, other bmw 323i car owners, i too, have lost the ability to go in reverse. just like the complaints from people all over the internet say, the car just sits there when you put it in reverse, as if it's in neutral. you can rev the engine, but you go nowhere. and like the others mentioned, i've called bmw, but customer relations says they're not aware of any problem, and won't assume any responsibility since the car is out of warranty. it only had 69,600 miles on it when the problem occurred. a local dealership said it would cost thousands to fix it, and would be happy to make those repairs after i bring it in, and pay them $100 for the diagnosis. i've called 3 different auto repair shops and each one is very, very, familiar with the problem. one shop owner said the 1999 and 2000 model 323i's had the same bad transmission, and that he's repaired the same problem in every one that has crossed his path. plus, mechanics have told me that bmw has come up with an updated part to make the repair. so why would bmw make a new part if there is no such problem? plus, this is becoming a safety issue. i had to push my car to get out of a parking space, and it nearly ran over me. a recall should be issued before someone gets hurt if they haven't already! *tr

Like the hundreds of others on the consumer affairs website, my 2000 bmw 323i with 84k miles failed to go into reverse. i was at a store and proceeded to back out of the parking space when the car would not go into reverse. there were no warnings - ever. the car was running smoothly. i had the car towed to bmw of arlington and was told that the transmission was shot and the cost will be $5,000 for a remanufactured transmission. i decided to check the web and was astounded that there were hundreds of bmw 2000 323i owners with the exact same problem. i contacted bmw of america via email and was given the same response as the other owners of normal wear and tear. many owners had less than 50,000 and bmw is not owning up to the problem. many had discovered that the transmission is a gm transmission and that gm issued a recall on its vehicles own vehicles however bmw had not and will not acknowledge the problem, but interestingly they are no longer using these transmissions. a class action is being discussed and rightly so. this is a rip off of thousands of consumers and definitely is a safety issue. i can see someone not being able to back up off of a train track, etc. please issue a recall. thank you.

On 8/707 i noticed that i could not shift my 2000 bmw323ci into reverse. no prior notice and no engine or check lights came on. it's like being in neutral. the engine revs but there is no movement. in another instance i was on a hill and tried to back up. when i switched into reverse, the car rolled forward!! the problem persists as of today 8/13/07. a quick search of the internet reveals that this problem is widespread (see attached links). bmw recalled the 5 and 7 series for this reason but did not recall the 3 series (perhaps because too many 3 series were sold compared to the 5 and 7 series??). bmw really needs to address this problem before someone is seriously hurt. http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/bmw_trans.html http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/01/bmw_transmission.html http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?section=7on_your_side&id=4407296 http://www.motortrend.com/cars/1999/bmw/5_series/recalls/ http://www.internetautoguide.com/auto-recalls/09-int/1999/bmw/7-series/index.html *tr

The transmission failed to perform in reverse. it simply acted as if it were in neutral. it was very scary and upsetting to have this happen, especially where and when it did. i was stuck and had to have reverse to leave the location where i had taken my daughter. only with the assistance of two (2) men was i able to get the car where i could use the forward gear to move ahead. this manual maneuvering of this car put the men helping me, it put me, and it put others on the roadway at risk while this maneuvering was being done at, obviously, very low speeds. bmw has not offered any substantial help with my plight, nor do they confirm all of the other complaints about the problems with the bmw 3 series, 2000 and later. part of the litany of the same complaint can be found on the consumeraffairs.com blog site. i'm confident bmw is aware of these complaints. they simply try to look away and ignore us all. *tr

I own a 2000 bmw 3.23i that i bought brand new in 2000. i spent a lot of money for that car and had nothing but problems with it. i had to replace the window regulators many times, and had a water leak problem. i spend thousands of dollars in other items that was just crazy, especially for a car that just had 70,000 miles. the big problem which caused me write this complaint was the transmission problem that a lot of people were having with their cars not wanting to go in reverse. the car just out of nowhere stopped going in reverse. this was just abnormal for a car with this low mileage. bmw did not want to take responsibility for this, and it was just crazy. i was very disappointed by their business tactic of not taking responsibility for this defective transmission. it was clearly not normal, yet they were trying to avoid to pay for a replacement, and they didn't care as they were making so many enemies. i never cared for mercedes as i liked the way bmw drove, but this experience was making them lose a customer for life. please make them issue a recall for the transmissions, and stop this business behavior. *ak

My 2000 bmw 323i won't go in reverse. the problem occurred with no warning, as the car has been properly maintained and has operated perfectly until today. the present mileage is a little over 60,000. an online search of the problem has revealed this is a very common problem that's specific to my make/model/year, yet bmw disavows any responsibility. estimated repair is $7,000, which has me feeling totally disgusted with bmw as a company, not to mention its products, which it apparently no longer stands behind. i can only hope the government will take action against bmw and force a recall. *nm

We bought a 2000 bmw 323i which currently only has about 66,000 miles on it. the car will shift into reverse, but will not actually move backwards. it just sits there revving. the car will drive forward, but not backwards. we were told that the transmission and the transmission thermometer needs to be replaced for a cost of $4500.00. we've done all the necessary maintenance on this vehicle. i've searched the web and found many other complaints about the same issue. i filed a complaint with bmw, but of course, they're not taking responsibility. these cars should have been recalled to replace the transmission. i was stranded at work when the car broke down. now, i'm without my car and also don't have the extra money to put towards a repair of $4500.00. for a high end car, this is unacceptable. this will most be my first and last bmw purchase. *jb

The car is a 2000 bmw 323i with 34,000 miles. there were no problems with the car/transmission prior to the reverse gear suddenly failing to engage while the car was in traffic and needed to be reversed to get out of the way of oncoming cars. the reverse gear continues to fail, although there are no problems driving forward. dealer states the transmission must be completely replaced to fix the problem. similar reports of transmission & reverse gear failure specific to 2000 bmw 323i listed here and other forums. *nm

I currently own a 2000 bmw 323i with 49,000 miles and was just told today that my transmission needs to be replaced, to the tune of $5200. i took my car to the dealership because i was unable to reverse. it appears that this is a recurring problem with several owners of this very make and model based on other complaints filed on different website. naturally, my warranty ran out last summer at 36,000 miles so i am unable to do anything there. i believe there is definitely a manufacturing problem here when a transmission is failing at less than 50,000 miles. i plan on contacting bmw n.a. to discuss the outrageous price that i have been quoted to see if they can help intervene or offer a solution. *nm

I have a bmw 323ci, year 2000. it has around 42000 miles on it. a few days ago, i was parked in my garage. i put the car into reverse and hit the accelerator, and the car went nowhere. it didn't shift into reverse at all. i pushed the car out of the garage, and put the car in drive gear. it went forward fine. i drove it to the shop and they look at it and said i need a new transmission. this will cost thousands. on a bmw with only 42,000 miles on it! my research indicates that this is a problem that is happening to a lot of people with the same car and model year. it is clearly a manufacturer's defect which ought to be the subject of a recall.*jb

I drive a 2000 bmw 323i. i didn't experience any problems prior to the failure. i pulled out of my drive way and went to work and when i was leaving work my reverse was no longer functioning properly. luckily i could go forward. i took the car to the bmw dealer recommended replacing the transmission (dealer was very courteous). many owners of the 2000 bmw 323i have been reporting this defect, problem is no recall, and the consumer is paying for it. *nm

The bmw car was parked, when tried to back out the reverse gear did not work. this was a safety hazard as the car was parked down hill and close to a fencing. car only worked in the forward direction and it was dangerous to move the car in the front direction. thus causing safety concern. the dealership confirmed that the transmission needed replacement. on contacting several bmw service centres, few of them indicated that the reverse gear safety problem is occuring in several other same model and year car. they indicated this was due to a faulty design in the transmission of the 2000 323i bmw cars.

There is an intermittent skreech when in d mode on automatic transmission. from a stop, when accelerating moderately, there is a loud skreech when car shifts from first gear to second gear. car has been inspected 3 times & problem has been duplicated at 2 different dealers. bmw rep. also acknowledges problem & has seen it before. claims it is the intake system but no fixes are available! also said if a fix comes out, i might not be able to get it unless i am still under warranty! please help, i have also contacted bmwna & they have taken no action. also contacted 3 dealers, 2 of which have seen the car & duplicated the horrible noise. yet no action to fix it. your help is greatly appreciated. *ak

I own a 2000 323i bmw and it has stopped to go into reverse. apparently the transmission is to be blamed for it and the whole transmission needs to be replaced. apparently there are 60 pages of complaints posted on the consumer affair website that same year and model of car has had this continuing issue. *tr

I have a 2000 323 bmw and all of sudden my reverse stop working for no reason at all i been up to date with my taking care of it and one day it just stop working, even though sometimes it does go reverse and sometimes it just dosent do nothing, i havent done anything to try to corect it because simply is to much for me the cost for it is 4,000 dollars and i just dont have the money to do it, i feel its not fair what bmw has done, with this problem that bmw 3 series are suspect on doing.

My bmw 323i no longer goes into reverse. i read online this is a common problem with certain bmws and i'm wondering why bmw hasn't issued a recall since this is a safety issue as well as an identified common problem. the website i found other complaints on is: http://www.noreverse.org/complaints.html the problem presently is constant - the car just has no reverse function any longer. i have not had it looked at by a shop as they want $550 to take the transmission out to evaluate (and that cost goes toward expense of repair but if the repair is unaffordable - it is too risky to have them do the evaluation and spend $550 for nothing). so now i'm in a position where i can't easily sell the car either since i can't exactly determine easily what is wrong. from what i read it is a problem with the d-g clutch drum that causes this problem and the only way to fix it is to rebuild the transmission. this same car about 4-5 years ago had faulty wires with the fan which would not stop running. this caused an electrical fire and $5000 worth of damage. *tr

2000 bmw 323i reverse gear does not work. i started my car and shifted into reverse gear, and nothing happened. i had just parked the car approximately 1 hour earlier. there was no indication prior to this incident that there was a problem with the transmission. in anticipation of a costly and lengthy repair process, i began to explore the internet for options, and it is only then that i realized that this is a widespread problem that has occurred to numerous other bmw owners. i am not alone and bmw of na is doing nothing to address the manufacturer's defect. i consider this a safety issue. bmw has no maintenance requirement for this transmission. i am assuming that they think it is replace upon failure. unacceptable, the part that failed is called the drum. a band beaks and the reverse gear is broken. they have modified the materials in the newer drums to alleviate the problem . that tells me that they are aware that the material they installed in my vehicle was inadequate. i have not repaired the vehicle at this time still shopping around for options. this is a safety issue and a recall is warranted. *tr

Out of nowhere my 2000 bmw 323i stopped going in reverse. prior to that it worked just fine, just stopped one day. drive works just fine, but reverse is gone. i took the car to my local bmw dealership and when i dropped it off on a saturday at 4:00pm they told me they'd look at it on monday and call me. the advisor told me based on the reverse failing it would likely be a transmission replacement needed. when asked how much that would cost he said another customer with my exact same year/make/model in the week prior paid $8k for his. we then came home and did research which has revealed thousands of other owners with the same year/make/model have the same issue and apparently this is something bmw has known about but is doing nothing about at all. i emailed the gm of my dealership the same sat evening i dropped the car off and attached many articles and websites highlighting the issue and telling them i planned to move forward with my own complaints with bmw na and online forums and local news outlets. today (monday) i initially got a call from an advisor telling me the car does in fact need a new tranny and that it would be $6500. later in the afternoon the head of the service dept. called saying the gm had forwarded my email and that he would like to offer to reduce the cost to $4k for me. i told him i had to talk to my fiance and called him back telling him they'd have to offer more than that to get me to not move forward sharing my issues. i have not heard back yet (it is now monday evening) but i imagine someone will call me tomorrow. regardless of how my local dealer chooses to deal with me i do feel this is a very significant issue in that 2 service advisors at my local dealership acknowledge the problem and clearly the gm does too or she never would've forwarded my emails on. i hope someone forces them to do a recall (and reimburse those of us who have to fix our cars now) and/or a class action lawsuit! *tr

I am an owner of 2000 bmw 323i. it currently has ~115k miles on it. today (friday, july 13, 2007), i entered the parking garage at work and attempted to back into a parking space --- as i always do. i drove forward, then put my car in the reverse gear, but it would not move. when i pressed on the accelerator, it would only make an idling sound like it was in the neutral gear --- even though the lcd showed r (reverse). after a few attempts of trying to go in reverse, i realized that all my efforts came to naught. luckily, i had just enough room to drive forward and clear the car in front of me so that i could take my car to get repaired. come to find out, i need a new transmission. i find it very odd that my transmission would go out this early and it wouldn't give any type of warning. also, i find it very frustrating that there are cars that cost 1/3 of the price and provide better utility. this experience definitely has me questioning my brand loyalty. bmw surely isn't living up to its' branding message as the ultimate driving machine --- unless it specifically excludes going in reverse.
