PE08032BMW OF NORTH AMERICA, LLC04/28/200808/15/2008ENGINE STALLING - FUEL PUMP FAILURE
In response to odi's information request for pe08-032 bmw stated that during failure of the high pressure pump the customer should initially experience longer engine starting times or rough engine running.after a distance of approximately 1 to 2 miles the pump- and engine-emergency operation program is activated, and the malfunction indicator lamp is illuminated.despite reduced engine power bmw believes that safe vehicle operation is possible and that vehicle driveability, steering, and braking systems are not affected and function in a normal manner.bmw indicated that only in very rare cases could the engine stall. odi's analysis of warranty data claims indicating possible stall incidents estimates that the rate at three years in service would be less than 1.0% of the population (note that some of the claims indicating stall do not appear to involve actual engine stalls, but rather operation at reduced engine power).odi's analysis of consumer complaints determined that about half describe the consequence of the failure as operation in limp mode, 27 percent indicate the problem resulted in a hard start or no start condition and 19 percent state that the problem was detected by illumination of the malfunction indicator lamp or a minor driveability symptom. only four percent of the complaints to odi and bmw indicate that an engine stall occurred.bmw indicated that a service action was initiated in april 2008 to address the problem and it is continuing to monitor the field situation and analyze field data. further investigation of this matter would not be an efficient allocation of agency resources.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency will continue to monitor complaints and other information relating to the alleged defect in the subject vehicles and take further action in the future if warranted.

I have owned this 2007 335i for 2 1/2 years. i am a 59 year old female that drives very conservatively. in the 2 1/2 years that i have owned this vehicle, the fuel pump has been replaced twice. four months ago the injectors had to be replaced and this past friday the electronic water pump and electronic thermostat had to be replaced. not typical of any bmw i have owned in the past 12-15 years. i contacted our local bmw dealership and they knew of no problems with this particular model. i contacted bmw today regarding this model and they took the information for review which to me means file 13. bmw knows there is a problem with the water pumps and the thermostats on this particular model and they choose to do nothing about it. they also know there is a problem with the injectors and they choose to do nothing. i was told that the nhtsa makes the determination on all recalls not the individual car makers. *tr

High pressure fuel pump failing resulting in my vehicle to shut off and not start. i'm very afraid this could happen while passing a vehicle on the highway or while on a vacation trip with family.

2007 bmw 335i sedan purchased used from dealer with 51,000 miles. about one month later, fuel system failed on interstate causing vehicle to loose power in rush hour traffic with high risk of accident and injury. car towed to dealer for analysis and replacement of fuel pump, kept for more than a week. one month later, the same problem occurred again. dealer would not cover cost of repair but said the car was drivable. drove car very minimal over last two months, now car will not accelerate to more than 50 mph and shudders dramatically. researched recalls and complaints revealed a long history of consumer complaints describing my exact circumstances. proceeding with very costly repair but apprehensive about result, safety and dependability of vehicle. manufacturer should recall and replace fuel system in order avoid potentially fatal circumstances.

The car started normally but within a mile it began to shudder above ~2.5k rpm. i got to my destination without further incidence. later that day soon after leaving the parking lot the car died at a stop sign. ses and other lights came on. i started it up and it immediately died again. this happened repeatedly until i found that if i gave it the right amount of gas and kept it under a certain rpm i could operate with very limited power. that combined with the fact it was largely downhill and not very far to my house allowed me to get home safely. i drove it to the dealership the next day (keeping it well under 2.5k rpm to do so) and they replaced the high pressure fuel pump.

High power fuel pump failure on 2007 bmw 335i sedan. vehicle began emitting smoke out the back, and running very rough. on a later restart the engine could not stay running. car was towed to dealer for repairs. hpfp was replaced and injectors were replaced, ecu software updated.

My vehicle is 2007 model bmw 335i coupe. i was on the freeway 405 going approximately 70 miles per hour. then suddenly an engine warning light engine malfunction sign comes up which lowers the rpm and the speed output of the engine to around 30~ 40. i have to quickly merge the vehicle from the inner lanes to the right going onto the curb since there was no curb on the inner lanes. after approximately 3 minutes as i slowly guided my vehicle to the side, the engine shuts off on its own with stuttering sound and engine cranking. i restarted the engine several times to no avail. i was extremely dangerous as the sudden slow down and engine shut off might happen when i am in the middle of the freeway and the cars behind or next to me might easly hit me with typical freeway speed of 70 mph. i called the two truck and had the vehicle towed to a bmw center. they inspected the vehicle and believed that the high pressure fuel pump is bad and will replace the fuel pump for me. it appears to be that this very same issue appeared quite often to a number of 335i or other bmw models using the same engine, in particular to the 07 and 08 models. more over, a lot of the car owners have the same issue happened to them even after their fuel pump replaced once or even twice. it seems like there is no absolute fix for such issue and it poses as a tremendous danger for bmw drivers with this specific engine since you cannot be certain when he problem will re-occur. similar complains have been filed and the action can be referred here nhtsa action number: pe08032

Long cranks to start up engine and misfires upon cold start up almost every day. often gets cel but dealer denys warranty/recall work on high pressure fuel pump (hpfp hereon) because i didn't have exact code they are seeking for. they confirmed the symptom but unless car breaks down on the road or get the exact code, they will not replace failed part. basically saying they will not voluntarily resolve problem unless they are forced to. hpfp failure on bmw n54 engine platform is already well known fact hence bmw put extended warranty on hpfp. but it's not a recall and many times dealer denys to replace although they confirm the symptom and possible danger associated with the failed parts on vehicles. all they did was updating the dme program that supposedly fix the problem but long crank still happens everyday.

2007 bmw 335i hpfp failed on the highway car stalled and came to a stop as i rolled off the shoulder. a second high pressure fuel pump is indicating that its going to fail and i am seriously concerned about driving it. the car only has 16,000miles and dealer refuse to swap the pump until there is actually failure even though i have exhibited all the signs that the pump is about to fail again. they only provided me a software update. i am seriously concerned for my saftey and as a result am not driving this car long distances or on the highway.. i think its about time authorties step up and force bmw to deal with this very serious vehicle hazzard, which they are abudantly aware of, but refuse to do nothing about.

Driving home my 2007 bmw 335 all of sudden lost horse power. error message stated engine malfunction-reduced power. this occured on an entry to an expressway while trying to accelerate. it obvious the dangers that could happen when the vehicle loses power. i was fortunate enough to pull over and limp to next exit. the dealer ship stated the problem was high pressure fuel pump (hpfp) the is the 2nd time the hpfp has been replaced on my vehicle. my vehicle only has 38k miles. i did further research and this appears to be a common problem. bmw needs to address this before anyone gets injured as a result of this issue.

Sudden loss of power on highway. the car did not stop or cause an accident but reading articles about others who have had same problems where car stalled at highway speeds scares me to death.

Purchased a used 2007 bmw 335i. within 2 weeks car would shake and would lose power at higher rpm. engine service light would come on, but not be present on restart. dealer diagnosed as a faulty high pressure fuel pump. dealer blamed it on fuel quality however i followed manufacture recommended octane ratings. was also told that dealership has had massive problems with the fuel pump on this model turbo engine. *tr

This is a second complaint of the same exact problem that i had previously in april 2008. the odi id number is: 10227507. on the evening of jan. 2nd, 2010, the replacement fuel pump failed while i was driving the car as i was making an approach to the onramp onto the freeway. the car shuddered, rattled, and loss power and eventually died. i had to tow the car to a storage overnight and waited until jan. 4th, a monday, to tow the car again to a nearby bmw service center. they eventually replaced the fuel pump, which is a 3rd fuel pump, including the original that came with the car. it was very frustrating that i was stranded 140 miles away from home, and had no transportation for 48 hours until the problem had been resolved thereafter. *tr

The high pressure fuel pump in my bmw 335i. the consequences, while well documented, for me lack of acceleration and unable to go past 45mph. this occurred on a major freeway where the speed limit is 60mph across the lake washington bridge. the part replaced was the high pressure fuel pump by bmw. what lead up to the failure? simply accelerating to freeway speeds caused the onboard computer to notify me there was an engine malfunction. it then reduced my speed to approximately 45mph. *tr

Noticed a long crank (about 5 seconds long) when i started my vehicle (2007 bmw 335i sedan) in the morning. the vehicle did start though. i was coming home from breakfast when the engine malfunction light came on and dramatically reduced power. at the time i was turning left at a signaled intersection. i was not able to accelerate through the turn and could have been struck by drivers turning left behind me. after a second or two, the car was able to accelerate, but in a reduced power state. later, it was determined the high pressure fuel pump failed. this was the second high pressure fuel pump replacement on this vehicle within a 6 month or about a 8000 mile span. if i was on the freeway or other high speed road, and this reduced power state appeared due to the fuel pump - i would pose a serious hazard to others on the road, and put my safety in jeopardy. *tr

High pressure fuel pump failed on my car twice 1st instance - 3000 miles on car - 2 months old - octoberish of 07 - symptoms were long cranking - taking 5-10 seconds to start - occasionally 20-30 seconds. (complaint was never filed - dealer replaced under warranty) 2nd instance - just a few weeks ago - no warning - driving away from my house, pulling into a busy street, suddenly almost no power, and almost stalled, and would have if i didn't get the clutch in and foot on the gas as quick as i did. car went into limp mode and was barely drivable. had to abuse the clutch just to get it to move without stalling, felt like it had maybe 50 horsepower if i was lucky. no exaggeration. - would occasionally stall at idle at this point. barely limped a few blocks home. (this fuel pump was the 2nd in the car, had about 25,000 miles on it and about 1.5 years). *tr

Started my car in the morning in about 400 feet after changing to 2nd gear and the clutch fully engaged drove 20 feet and the car bucked. no engine fault lights lit. drove to work. at lunch time started the car and the engine light was lit anything about 1/4 throttle the car would bog down and slow down. maximum speed was around 45mph with very little acceleration. upon restart the car was running without the engine light and performance returned. i'm concerned this could happen at any moment such as merging onto the highway. this is a major safety concern when i have my family in the car. contacted the dealer and they inspected the car the next day. they found the hpfp to be faulty and replaced it. *tr

My previous car was a 2007 bmw 335i coupe. after a couple of months of owning the car, the car was diagnosed with a faulty fuel pump. subsequently, i purchased a 2008 335i convertible. after driving the car for a couple of thousand miles, the car started showing signs of a faulty fuel pump (long crank times). yesterday, the engine malfunction light came on and the issue was determined to be that of the faulty fuel pump. at this point, the car went into limp mode with reduced power. additionally, there was shaking and the car was misfiring and running very rough. this is clearly a huge defect with the 335i engines. it is a safety hazard should the fuel pump break while the car is on a highway, or in a deserted location with no access to a repair shop. i would appreciate if this issue is given the seriousness that it deserves. *tr

I purchased my bmw 335i from a costa mesa used car dealer. the problem with the high pressure fuel pump was disclosed to me at time of purchase. however this vehicle was at one time in its life, affected by this problem that so many other 335i owners are facing. while i didn't provide the vin number, the car was manufactured in september 2006. the original owner of this car brought the car into a ca bmw dealership and it was ultimately bought back by the dealership, repaired, sent to an auction, where it was purchased by the used car dealership that i purchased it from in april 2008. at the time of purchase the vehicle had 4000 miles, so this problem occurred rather quickly. *tr

April 2007 build bmw 335i coupe stalled in the middle of the road due to failure of high pressure fuel pump. after taking it to a bmw dealer, it was replaced and problem appears to have been solved in my car. however, i do believe that this issue is relatively common among 335i owners and is very much a safety issue. a car with this problem is prone to stall in the middle of driving and that could be a very dangerous scenario. in my case, bmw was very good about replacing the part. but i think for a lot of people, they may not know that this potential problem is lurking in their car. there have been a large number of owners on the bmw enthusiast forums who have experienced this problem. *tr

I have 5,500 miles on my brand new bmw 335i, and the fuel pump failed on me. luckily, the failure occurred while my car was at my home, as opposed to on the road/freeway, which could have caused me to get into an accident. it's now been 5 days that my car has been at the dealership, and instead of immediately replacing the fuel pump under warranty, the corporation is requiring the dealership to run a bunch of tests on my car, and to basically get rid of the fault codes without replacing the fuel pump. this is a known issue with the 335s which bmw north america refuses to issue recalls for. the issue is widely discussed on www.bimmerpost.com. *tr

Experienced fuel pump failure on my 2007 bmw 335i and became a safety hazard to others driving behind me on my way to work. started experiencing symptoms as recently as a month ago, such as long engine crank times, very rough idling upon startup, and occasional limp mode performance. in spite of all this, the dealership did not work on my car until i experienced a service engine soon (ses) warning light. the fuel pump progressively got worse where the engine would shudder when revving over 2000rpms, and the car perpetually remained in limp mode where it is not able to accelerate in a safe enough manner to drive on public roads and highways. i was finally able to bring my car in for warranty repair when the ses light came on at 7/25/07 on my 02/07 production vehicle. i was told that there is over a one month wait for a fuel pump replacement. *jb

High rate of fuel pump failures for the 335i bmw, if occurs on the highway leads to very dangerous situations. bmw should be forced to issue a recall for safety concerns. *tr

Entering a freeway on ramp during a turn, the car's fuel system failed and caused the car to 'shutter' (same feeling as someone who does not know how to drive a stick shift). this caused the car to lose control and flip over after hitting a ditch. the car has already had two fuel pumps replaced and bmw knows about this problem. so far, bmw does not want to take responsibility for their inability to fix this known 335i problem. there are already 11 complaints (not including this one) regarding the issue on this website. bmw assist also failed in the crash as it did not contact bmw assist call center after the crash. *tr

Bmw 335 coupe hpfp (high pressure fuel pump for direct injection) failed before 4,000 miles. no signs of failure, car started to run rough, went into limp mode, and then would not restart without dying again after a few moments. car was towed to the dealer, and was diagnosed as fuel pump failure. i had to wait 7+ weeks with the car in service because the fuel pump was on international backorder with 400+ units on backorder! pump was replaced after being in the shop for 7+ weeks, and car is running good again.

I own a 2007 bmw 335i. a few months ago after a service issue for an unrelated problem, my vehicle dash display went haywire and showed an engine problem. i was traveling on a highway at speed and suddenly no power. the vehicals behind me had to swerve to avoid hitting me. it was also difficult to get over onto the shoulder. the dealership diagnosed the issue as a failed high pressure fuel pump. after some recent research i have read that this is a common and known issue with my vehicle, yet there have been no mandatory recalls, merely replacements pump that in many cases fails again. i see this as a potentially life-threatening issue that is waiting to occur given the right circumstances.

2007 335i coupe - car experiences a sudden loss of power while driving at normal speeds. car omits malfunction warning lights on the dashboard. this car has had this happen now at least 3 times. the previous two times bmw dealer found faulty fuel pumps and replaced. now, bmw dealer claims the car needs new cam shafts in the car, meanwhile engine has been taken out of the vehicle completely to attempt the repair. it seems like bmw does not want to acknowledge that the car has major issues.*tr

I purchased a new 2007 bmw 335i from bmw of honolulu in jan 2007. 4 months later the car stalled with my wife and son in the middle of traffic. car was towed in to bmw and remained there for over a month. bmw could not give me a status as to what was going on, nor did they try to contact me. eventually, i was told it was the fuel pump, which i would think would be a recall item. they knew of the problem but did not inform their customers until cars were towed in to the dealership. my car is in the shop now for some other issue. it has been towed in 3 times and driven in for other repairs 7 other times in 2 years. this has cost me to miss work and most of all an inconvenience to my family. usually there is no loaner available, so you have to wait for a shuttle which drives all over the island dropping off everyone else who is there having their 335i worked on. i have complained with bmw of north america and they finally agreed to pay a months car payment and insurance. i have recently submitted another online complaint which i have received no response. spoke with bmw of honolulu management and they are supposedly in the process of buying back the car and trying to put me in another 335i. don't know if i want to do that. what kills me is their reluctance to keep me informed of anything. they tell me, i will get this information to you on a certain day and i don't hear from them for days at a time. the online blogs are amazing. their comments sound exactly like mine. i just retired from the u.s. navy and i work with jags at a joint headquarters command in hawaii and they have directed me to seek advice from a civilian attorney. i would really like to sue bmw for all they have put me and my family through. being that they knew of this issue and have not informed the customers i am surprised that no one has been killed yet. i think this is a safety issue and should be looked into. *tr

I have had two fuel pumps replaced for my bmw 335i and it is very annoying. the events leading up to the failure were very long cranks when i started the car and one time my car even almost broke down and wouldn't start on me... bmw replaced both the fuel pumps that went dead and for one of them i had to wait three weeks to get it... =/ very mad!! *tr

2007 bmw 335i has known widespread fuel pump problem with high rate of failure leading to sudden power loss. i have new car with 1200 mi, with no warning from dealer about potential problem, i experienced near complete power loss on busy freeway leading to near collision. this car should be categorically recalled until all fuel pumps are replaced. mfr is continuing to sell this car with known defect without warning consumer. when presented with this problem, it is common for a 2-3 month backorder on replacement pump which also has a high failure rate. overall, bmw's poor design, lack of thorough testing before release of new engine, and failure to warn customers is creating this unacceptable hazard.

On cold starts with my 335i sedan, car would take 5-6 seconds to start. happened after 1,950 miles, consecutive mornings and evenings. brought the car into the shop. they reset the computer and discovered a failed fuel pump. part is on back order, still not eta on arrival and car has been in the shop for over 3 weeks now. *tr
