Defect Summary | On certain motorcycles, frequent short trips particularly during cold temperatures, can cause water to accumulate in the oil tank, and when the engine is running, escaping water vapor can condense on the oil tank air bleed valve. in freezing temperatures, this water could freeze and block the air bleed valve. | |||||||||||||||
Consequence Summary | It is possible that a pressure build up in the oil tank could cause it to rupture, allowing oil to leak onto the rear tire. an oil leak could cause a fire. oil on the rear tire could cause loss of control. | |||||||||||||||

Idle is erratic. bikes idle jumps randomly and hangs up at a high rpm at idle or when shifting between gears. bike has been in for repair five times now. dealer has replaced the airbox and updated software to no avail. bike is unsafe to ride in this condition. problem is more pronounced at higher ambient temps. *jb | |||

Engine will not idle properly, it should idle at 1,000 rpm. at least part of every ride it will go up to 1,500 to 2,000 rpm. | |||

(1) events leading up to the failure: bmw motorcycle 06 k1200gt. driving motorcycle at highway speeds. engine fully warmed up. (2) failure and its consequences: shutting off throttle to down shift engine would not idle down, engine idle stuck at 3000 rpm for five to ten seconds. when idle did slow down it would idle erratic and not smooth just touching the throttle would cause the engine to rev to 3000 rpm's. very difficult to drive at surface street speeds, 40 mph or slower. problem would go away if engine is turned off for a minute or two! this has happened to me five times since dec. 26 2006. (3) what was done to correct the failure; i.e, parts repaired or replaced: complained to dealer at 12,000 mile inspection. job: check idle, customer says he has had 4 instances of erratic idle. dealer checked idle and for codes, nothing done. i also checked with two other dealers to see if they had any reports of high idle problems. they claim they didn't and both said they contacted bmw na. | |||
