Defect SummaryBmw is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 k1300 s and k1300 gt motorcycles manufactured between september 11, 2008 and november 19, 2009. poor fuel quality may lead to small deposits within the throttle bodies. during engine operation in a low rpm range, typically near idle speed (when coming to a stop) air flow could be sufficiently restricted and engine stalling could occur.
Consequence SummaryEngine stalling could result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryBmw will notify owners and repair the motorcycles by updating the engine management software free of charge. the safety recall began on february 22, 2010. owners may contact bmw toll-free at 1-800-831-1117.

My new bmw motorcycle (model k 1300 gt) is experiencing frequent engine stalls (stalled 4 times during 350 mile ride) and the problem has been getting worse. i consider this a serious safety hazard because the stalls occur with out warning during normal operation of the motorcycle. i've stalled on exit ramps and at traffic signals during turning situations. this sudden and unexpected loss of power is very dangerous on a motorcycle. *tr

2009 k1300 gt motorcycle experiencing complete engine stalling. this occurs, usually, when slowing to a stop or traveling at slow speed in town/traffic as clutch is engaged and downshifting....engine stalls completely. also, at speed usually in corners, when downshifting and engaging clutch, engine stalls, and as clutch is released the result is immediate rear tire sliding/engagement/skidding almost resulting in a crash. temperatures averaging between 80 and 91 degrees f. i experienced this about 2 months ago on only two occasions and thought it might have been 'operator error', but this more recent incident the bike stalled five times while in traffic traveling less than 30mpg going into city of ketchum, id. *tr

Engine stalls out and quits for no reason when you engage the clutch. this happened with my wife on the back and could have resulted in death or injury had we been rear ended or lost control of the bike. bmw has not supplied a solution. *tr

I own a 2009 bmw k1300gt motorcycle. there is an issue where the engine cuts out for no apparent reason, when the clutch is disengaged. this can happen at any speed and there are no instrumentation warnings of the failure. this issue is widely reported on the bmw owner's forums (http://www.k-bikes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18145&page=3&pp=10).*tr

Engine randomly stalls (so random i cannot recreate) at any altitude but more so at high altitude by simply pulling in the clutch lever. this condition is obviously a safety hazard and could involve rear end collisions or other. bmw has not responded to dealership or myself with a fix for this condition. *tr

I own a 2009 bmw k 1300 gt. i ride extensively and am experiencing stalling when decelerating or coming to a stop. the stalling seems to occur most frequently with the clutch in and the bike warm. it is erratic and has occurred 30 times over the summer. now that it is cooler the stalling is less frequent. when this occurs my braking servo and lights go out. this has occurred at night at stop lights whereas the surprise stall causes fumbling to restart plus i am not as visible to other vehicles which is a safety concern when it occurs. i have also experienced the stalling during my rush hour traffic commute on a 55 mph road with stop lights. i was again vulnerable because i presented a hazard by immobility to other drivers. when stalled several mind sequences occur that take your focus off the surrounding environment on the highway......the engine shut down, what happened, no fuel? accidental kill switch bump? electrical failure. try to restart i have taken the motorcycle to my dealer who stated that bmw was aware and most certainly working on it. there is no official recognition by bmw of the problem. they did a computer check, did some fuel tweaks to no avail. *tr

Motorcycle stalls often while downshifting to 1st gear. i complained to my dealer as motorcycle is under warranty. they could not find a fault. the service manager says that there are quite a few other persons with the same problem and that bmw is working on it. *tr

Motorcycle engine intermittently stalls while riding motorcycle at operating temperature, usually at low speed and possibly when the clutch is disengaged. outside temp. 80-100 degree range. no warning signs on dash appear or engine backfire, engine just dies. has happened three times in 4,000 miles since the vehicle was newly purchased. engine restarts fine like nothing is wrong. vehicle brought in for repair on 9-24-2009. dealer claims may be fuel related deposits in the throttle bodies causing air flow restriction. removed airbox and cleaned throttle bodies per puma # 26327820-01 which shows to be invalid per another dealers search. added fuel system cleaner. performed engine control unit software update. told to use chevron techron fuel to prevent further problems. *tr

I purchased a 2009 bmw k1300gt motorcycle in april of 2009. beginning in may 2009 i experienced stalling when slowing and stopping for lights and signs, on an infrequent basis. by july of 2009 the stalling has become more problematic, such as entering corners at speed. i sought repair from the dealership, mortons bmw of fredericksburg, va. mortons advised the bmw of north america and bmw of germany has no known fix for the stalling problem. mortons disconnected the carbon canister as a temporary attempt, but the bike stalled before i exited the parking lot. as of 9-8-09, mortons advised me bmw of germany does not know why the k1300 motorcycles stall. *tr

2009 bmw k1300 gt has stalled once while up-shifting on the interstate, and stalls consistently when decelerating and down-shifting. motorcycle first stalled at approx 640 miles just prior to break-in service. two dealer attempts to resolve problem by disconnecting and then physically isolating the charcoal canister have not improved the situation. calls to bmwna customer service have yielded zero results or recommendations for corrective action. *tr

Engine stalls while driving 2009 bmw k1300gt motorcycle. this has occurred six times, some while approaching or pulling away from stop signs, others on the street during low speed riding. this is a very dangerous situation. a cycle must remain moving to maintain stability and stalling at a stop sign can lead to being rear-ended by other vehicles behind me. the dealer has been contacted and does not have a solution. i am fearful of riding the cycle at this point due to the significant danger posed by this unexpected engine stalling while riding. i understand than bmw has possibly been ignoring this situation for several years and that nhtsa has yet to take action. please take action before the first death results. this is a very serious issue that only a cycle rider can fully comprehend. *tr

This weekend while coming down through pisgah and down us25 from asheville in both rain and dry conditions with me alone and no load the bike stalled six times. the engine shuts off without warning while decelerating/slowing down after clutch is pulled in such as coming to a stop light or slowing down at an intersection for a turn. you can be in third or second gear or fifth but when you pull the clutch in it dies silently. it goes without saying that this is dangerous so i am coming to you for a fix. i read that v 13.2 helps fix, but some things that may be worth checking: *tr

2009 bmw k1300gt engine stalling during normal operation. while driving around 40 miles per hour and down shifting from 4th gear to 3rd gear, the engine stalled for no apparent reason. engine started back up after stall. engine stalling during movement can be hazardous under many riding conditions. *tr
