Defect SummaryBmw is recalling model year 2008 r1200 gs and r1200 gs adventure motorcycles. in certain situations, such as high generator speeds combined with large demands for electrical current, spurious signals could emerge within the motorcycle's electrical system. if this were to occur, it could affect the pressure sensor signals of the anti-lock brake system (abs) control unit. if this happened, the abs could switch off; however, in such a situation, a warning lamp would illuminate. normal braking would still be available to slow and stop the motorcycle.
Consequence SummaryAny time vehicle control is compromised a crash may occur.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and repair or replace the necessary components free of charge. the recall began on october 26, 2009. owners may contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117.
NotesOwners may also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's vehicle safety hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (tty 1-800-424-9153), or go to http://www.safercar.gov .

Defect SummaryBmw is recalling 46 my 2008 r1200 r, r1200 gs, and r1200 gs adventure motorcycles. due to a material defect in the intermediate shaft of the transmission, the shaft could break. if this occurred, it is possible for the transmission to seize.
Consequence SummaryIf this happened, lock-up of the rear tire could occur. it is also possible for the transmission housing to break. if this happened, oil could leak onto the rear whee, increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the gearbox. the recall began during august 2008. owners should contact bmw at 1-800-331-1117.

Defect SummaryBmw is recalling 4,922 my 2007-2008 r1200r, my 2006-2007 r1200 gs, my 2007 r1200 st, and my 2008 r1200 gs adventure motorcycles. due to the current routing of the front brake lines, it is possible that during riding, the brake lines could be under strain. if the vibration/strain is significant, the brake lines could split and start to develop a leak. if the leak became significant, brake fluid could escape. if this happened, the level of fluid in the reservoir of the front brake system could drop.
Consequence SummaryIf fluid level drops significantly, the front brakes could fail increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and install new brake lines with a modified routing free of charge. the recall began during august 2008. owners may contact bmw at 1-800-831-1117.

Numerous owners report to both the office of defects investigation and in internet forums, the fuel pump housing cracks in the moulded outlet fitting area of their motorcycle.this housing seals the top of the fuel tank and a crack in this housing can potentially result in a fuel leak.to assess the frequency and severity of the issue, this office is opening a preliminary evaluation.the odi complaints cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following odi identification numbers: 10449393, 10457823, 10475150, 10471642, 10356156, 10433733, 10442023, 10445888, 10453738, 10474390, 10417320, 10444876, 10444670, 10448104, 10425962, 10430734, 10443840, 10448325, 10471518, 10451907, 10433589, 10430822, 10467136, 10445954, 10432269, 10437222, 10444742, 10452476.

While riding with preteen son on the passenger seat, gas fumes became apparent. upon inspection found the top of the riders right fuel pump was leaking fuel via several cracks thus allowing fuel to escape and become a hazard. the following has already been submitted to you but it explains the issues with this faulty fuel pump better than i could failure of the fuel pump housing high-pressure fuel quick disconnect reinforcement flange cracks under high pressure cycling and leaks, sending raw fuel down the left fairing in close proximity of the vehicles left exhaust pipe and ignition system components. consequences of failure the combination of high fuel pressure and negligent design create substantial risk for riders of the impacted vehicles. there are multiple negative consequences of this failure, a few of which are outlined below: 1. riders become fuel soaked as fuel leaks down the left fairing and then is forced by fairing airflow dynamics on to the riders left leg. 2. fuel vapors, captured by the fairing and heated by the exhaust pipe become extremely volatile and could lead to a fire and/or explosion. 3. fuel vapors rising from the fairing and exiting the top of the fairing between the instrument panel and fuel tank, are blown by airflow into the riders face. preliminary analysis examination of the fuel pump assembly suggests that the high-pressure fuel quick disconnect reinforcement flange was inadequately designed for the fuel pump outlet pressures. bmw's choice of a non-metallic (composite) pump housing combined with a composite high-pressure disconnect fitting was unwise and the failure mechanism is obvious. high pump pressure expands the composite high-pressure fitting causing it to readily load the fuel pump high-pressure quick disconnect flange. over time, pressure cycling causes the quick disconnect reinforcement flange to crack allowing fuel to leak. *tr

2006 gs 1200 bmw motorcycles,lt models also. motorcycles have seals that are failing on final drive (rear end of cycle where rear tire mounts) this causes gear lube to escape onto rear tire and brake rotor. bearings in rear wheel will fail causing rear wheel to wobble and possible loss of control of cycle. there have been reports of fire. i personally have one right now waiting to go into dealer for repair. bmw came out with a updated final drive assy. but they will only put it on if there is a catastrophic failure. the dealer say this is not a problem. failures typically occur around 20,000 miles or higher, when cycle will hopefully be out of warranty. this issue is a safety concern and should be addressed before someone gets hurt or killed. this has been an ongoing issue for the past 10 years,. these bikes should all be recalled and fixed and or have the warranty extended for life. owner incurred cost of fixing this could go as high as 1,500 dollars. *tr
