In a letter dated august 27, 2008, general motors corp. (gm) notified nhtsa that it will conduct a safety recall (nhtsa recall number 08v-441) to address a safety relateddefect that can result in engine compartment fire in approximately 850,000 vehicles equipped with a heated windshield washer fluid option.the subject vehicles of this investigation comprise over three-quarters of the recall population. according to gm, a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the windshield washer fluid heater module may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. this may cause other electrical features to malfunction, create an odor or cause smoke and in rare cases it may cause a fire.as a remedy, gm dealers will install a wire harness with an in-line fuse. in addition to the subject vehicles, several other gm models with the heated windshield washer fluid option are included in recall 08v-441: my 2006-2008 buick lucerne (manufactured august 2005 through november 2007); my 2008 buick enclave (manufactured february 2007 through april 2007); my 2006-2008 cadillac dts (manufactured may 2007 through november 2007); my 2007-2008 saturn outlook (manufactured august 2006 through april 2007); and my 2007-2008 gmc acadia (manufactured august 2006 through april 2007) vehicles.gm is instructing owners to take their vehicle to a dealer for service if they experience symptoms of windshield washer heater module short circuits. gm's recall resolves the safety defect concerns pursued by this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed.

When driving in the rain my buick lucerne's exterior driver-side rear view mirror is useless due to the wash of water streaming across the driver's side window. it is impossible to see traffic in the left lane and in order to change lanes i must rely on the interior rear view mirror. this loss of visibility occurs whether or not there is a wind condition, but it is most dangerous on the highway at highway speeds with windshield wipers pushing water toward the driver side window. i have had a couple of near misses during daylight driving conditions. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 40 mph, there was heavy condensation on the outside of the front windshield. the temperature was set at 72 degrees with the a/c on and the dials set on windshield defroster/lower leg. the dealer was contacted who determined the vehicle was operating normally. on 09/18/06, the manufacturer was contacted and a safety complaint was filed. updated 10/3/2006 - *nm

Tl*-the contact stated that his 2006 buick lucerne driver side exterior mirror doesn't adjust outward or high enough for the contact to see the blind spots. the contact stated that the driver's side mirror should be able to see three lanes over, and his mirrors on this vehicle didn't do that. the contact took the vehicle to the dealership, and they informed him that they were aware of the problem of other complaints, but they couldn't do anything about the way the vehicle was designed. the contact stated called the manufacturer, and was given case# 71-495201943. the failure mileage was 3,000 and, the current mileage was 6,200. *ak update 4/9 *tr

I cannot adjust the driver's side exterior mirror to a safe position for viewing passing traffic. i am 6'2, and mirror cannot be raised high enough or far enough to the left to safely cover adjoining lane. dealer checked similar models in inventory; said they all have same limitation. i have never had a car with such an extreme limitation on adjustment of the outside mirror for the driver. this is very unsafe for all driving conditions. failure is continuous. *nm

Buick lucerne cx-l, 4 door sedan, vin 1g4hd57286u226635 the safety issue is that the buick lucerne's driver's sideview mirror cannot be adjusted for me to see cars in the driver's blind spot. also cannot adjust the buick lucerne's driver's sideview mirror to give a safe view when entering an interstate highway. i have tried adjusting the driver's seat to different positions, other then my preferred position, and cannot obtain a safe side view. the car has been taken to two different buick service departments and was informed that it is working as designed and that there have been no service bulletins addressing this concern. *nm

Dt*: the contact stated while setting the cruise control the vehicle surges forward 5 to 7 mph. due to this problem the vehicle takes 15 to 30 seconds to return to the set speed. this is an intermittent problem that occurs under all driving conditions. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, where it was determined this was the way the vehicle was designed. updated 7/11/2006 - driver's side mirror fogged up. the fuel gauge would move to full. wind was coming through the side of the windshield. the light to illuminate the instrument panel were not bright enough. *nm

Driver's mirror does not adjust adequately to view the blind spot to the driver's left rear. the passenger side mirror adjusts correctly. the driver's side travels about 1/2 less. i narrowly avoided colliding with another vehicle while changing lanes. the other drivers horn alerted me to the problem. other buick lucernes in the dealers showroom have the same problem. *nm

2006 buick lucerne with a list of concerns /problems**cc on the day of purchase the consumer's noticed wind noise from both front doors and scratches on the windshield. the dealer attempted to buff out the scratches but was unsuccessful. gm approved a windshield replacement. while driving the automatic driver's seat started moving up on it's own. the seat would not stop until it was as far forward as it could go. the cd player/radio refused to eject a cd, but after two days it finally released. the radio was also not working during this time. the consumer made a service appointment. trunk deck exploded. when the trunk release button was pushed there was a loud noise and the trunk flew open. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. the doors were readjusted to stop the wind noise. the technician indicated he couldn't find anything wrong with the seat. they also couldn't find anything wrong with the cd/radio. when the technician pressed the trunk release button on the key fob, the trunk deck exploded. the vehicle was left at the dealer to be serviced. the dealer was unable to determine the cause of the trunk problem. *nm

When i wash my windshield, the drivers side does not dispense fluid properly. the fluid pools on the lower left side of the windshield rather than in front of the driver. this requires operation much longer than normal. in an ice storm on february 14th i had to refill the system every 25 miles. the dealer has replaced the left wiper assembly. the same condition exists with the new assembly. *jb
