Defect SummaryVehicle description: passenger vehicles. the rear shoulder belt(s) do not retract. a retainer could separate from a rear seat shoulder belt retractor which results in the retractor return spring becoming disengaged.
Consequence SummaryIn a crash, an occupant may receive more severe injuries if there is excessive slack in the shoulder belt.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect both rear shoulder belt retractors for correct function and install a spring cover retaining strap to each retractor. if a retractor does not function correctly, it will be replaced.
NotesGm recall no. 00023.owner notification began november 15, 2000.owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537 or buick at 1-800-521-7300. also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-888-dash-2-dot (1-888-327-4236).

 Odihas received seven complaints of alleged rear seat belt retractor problems on model year (my 1995 oldsmobile aurora and my 1995-96 buick riviera vehicles.the complaints state that the retractor mechanisms fail to retract the belt webbing, thus not providing secure fit for the occupants.three of the complaintants stated that a spring in the retractor had failed.all of the complaints have been received since august of 1998.

 Vehicle is experiencing problems with the driver side seat belt. the seat belt will not support the driver. owner has contacted the dealer, but the problem still exist. *nm on 5/32004 consumer was hit on the driver's side by a 18 wheeler. they replaced the seat belt with a new one and the same problem still occurred. the consumer believes the design of this gm belt is defective because it does not provide protection during side impact accidents. the consumer believes all buick riviera's need to be recalled and replaced with belts that will work and give protection . *bf *nm

 The rear seat belts failed to retract as well as the right side. the rear seats were rarely used. this failure was due to the defect described in recall 00v057000 rear shoulder belts but the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall. *jb

 The consumer took the vehicle to have recall repair oov-057 of the rear seat belt, the consumer requested that the dealer also replace the front seat belt since they failed in the same manner as the rear (not retracting), the consumer paid for the repair of the front seat belts but feels they should have been recalled with the rear ones since they exhibited the same failure. nlm
