Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles, the rear axle pinion seal does not meet all of the specifications and may experience a fluid leak.
Consequence SummaryA rear differential failure may cause loss of motive power and possibly loss of control increasing the risk of a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace the pinion seal free of charge. the recall began on february 1, 2008. owners may contact cadillac at 1-800-458-8006 or http://www.cadillac.com; pontiac at 1-800-620-7668 or http://www.pontiac.com; and saturn at 1-800-972-8876 or http://www.saturn.com.

PE07037GENERAL MOTORS CORP.07/17/200712/27/2007FAILURE OF THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL07V589000
Odi evaluated two different alleged defects involving rear drivetrain components during this preliminary evaluation.gm is conducting a recall to address one of the defect conditions and odi has opened an engineering analysis to continue its investigation of the other alleged defect. on december 19, 2007, gm submitted a defect information report to nhtsa concerning defective rear axle pinion seals in approximately 275,936 model year (my) 2005-07 cadillac cts, sts and srx vehicles as well as my 2006-07 pontiac solstice and my 2007 saturn sky vehicles (recall 07v-589).on sts and srx vehicles with all wheel drive, the front axle pinion seal also does not meet all of gm's specifications and may experience a fluid leak.gm indicated that the seal supplier made an unauthorized change to the pinion seal material.leaking pinion seals could result in loss of rear differential lubrication which could result in rear wheel lock-up and loss of vehicle control. on december 7, 2007, odi opened an engineering analysis (ea07-017) to investigate complaints of rear drivetrain component failure (e.g., fractured rear differential carrier housing or rear axle half shafts) while driving in approximately 7,600 my 2004 through 2006 cadillac cts-v vehicles.this condition may result in a loss of motive power and vehicle disablement and is not addressed by recall 07v-589.odi identified 35 complaints (16 to odi and 19 to gm) and 128 warranty claims potentially related to this condition (see ea07-017 opening resume).these complaints are not included in the failure report summary of this closing resume. the complaints and warranty figures given in this resume are limited to those that (a) are most likely caused by a leaking rear pinion seal; and (b) resulted in an allegation of a rear differential failure while driving.the data do not include all reports of seal leakage.
EA07017GENERAL MOTORS CORP.12/07/200707/16/2008REAR DRIVETRAIN COMPONENT FAILURE
In july of 2007 the office of defects investigation (odi) opened pe07-037 to investigate allegations that the rear differential may fail causing a loss of motive power, and in some instances a loss of control, in model year (my) 2004 through 2006 cadillac cts, cts-v, and sts vehicles.as a result of that investigation gm issued recall 07v-589 to correct a leaking pinion seal problem.ea07-017 was opened to investigate complaints of fractured rear differential housings or rear half shafts in high performance cadillac cts-v vehicles.according to gm, these failures resulted from the cumulative damage from multiple power hop events that can occur during very aggressive driving. in february 2008 investigators from odi met with gm representatives to conduct testing of the subject cts-v vehicles.during the testing the subject vehicles were subjected to considerable torsional forces from standing starts and while driving.power hop occurred during some of the most aggressive driving maneuvers.the testing did not result in failure of any rear drivetrain components.the engineering design and testing data supplied to odi by gm and the results of the testing conducted by odi tend to support gm's position that the differential design is not defective. complaints listed in the failure report do not include those indicative of failure of the rear pinion seal in cts-v vehicles covered by recall 07v-589. further investigation in this matter would not be an efficient allocation of agency resources.accordingly, this investigation is closed.see attached closing report for further details.

This 2006 cadillac cts is a 6 pspd manual transmission, all other gears work except reverse. this vehicle only has about 20,100 miles which is consistent with less than 2 years of using a vehicle. i was told by the auto dept at gm on maui they will not be paying for the repairs and the problem was the wear and tear in the shift assembly had to be changed. a month later i attempted to get this fixed by the same auto department and was informed they don't have a company that manufactures the parts (part no 1526075) and they cannot find this part anywhere. i believe this is a defect in the shift assembly part and feel gm should have this shift assembly part recalled. checks made on the web revealed that there are numerous complaints about this same issue on cadillac.com and ?autopartsfair.com?. *tr

2006 cadillac cts. four separate incidents in less than two years where the rear differential, pinion seal has leaked at highway speeds causing smoke, noise and rendered the car un-drivable. four separate tows, four separate strandings. two of the strandings were in the middle of the night. blogs and discussions i have read indicate this problem is wide spread. some report the rear axle locking up and causing a situation that could have been life threatening. the car has been to four separate cadillac dealer repair facilities and each time they just bubble-gum repair (replace the defective seal) and send me on my way hoping that my warranty will expire before the same old problem happens again. i no longer have confidence in the car. i rent when i must travel out of town. this car is going to get me killed and likely some other innocent people when the rear end locks-up on the freeway at 75 mph. the incident date noted below is only the most recent. the car was towed 40 miles to fisher chevrolet cadillac in yuma, arizona and remains there as of this date. *tr

The first problem i encountered with the vehicle was a broken clutch pedal return spring that had fallen out from under the dashboard at 8,850 miles. this was repaired under warranty. second, i had a cadillac dealership replace the rear differential under warranty due to a whining noise and leak present at 9,021 miles. at this time i had questioned a clank noise present in the driveline when engaging or disengaging the clutch. i was told this is normal, and no problem was present at this time. at 10,530 miles, i was making a right turn from a stop in first gear. i had accelerated to 20mph and shifted into second gear. i began accelerating in second gear when the driveline failure occurred. the vehicle had spun 270 degrees to the right loosing control. this caused the the vehicle to hit the right side curb with extreme force to the left rear wheel, damaging the rear suspension and differential. the vehicle proceeded over the curb with all four wheels and stopped on a sidewalk. this also caused chassis and front suspension damage. the vehicle was unable to move after the accident due to the clutch not engaging. the clutch pedal travel is now about 3 inches total off the floor, opposed to the original 6 inch travel equal to the height of the brake pedal. as a result of the accident the vehicle was totaled by the insurance company and sold. at this time no assistance has been given by general motors. *tr

Rear differential whine and leakage - 2006 model, build date nov 2005. the car is used for freeway commuting only (300 miles/day) and has never been driven hard. the differential has whined since delivery with 78 miles on the car. the differential fluid was changed at 2847 miles with redline 75w-90 synthetic fluid and gm 1052358 additive, and significant metal powder was removed from the magnetic drain plug at the time of change. on april 16, at a little over two months and 8413 miles, i took the car back to the selling dealership for repair, as the differential had begun leaking about april 10 and ~7200 miles. the service manager, wyman adcock, drove the car and reported that while he could 'hear a slight whine', he thought that it was normal and i should continue to drive it to see if it gets worse. i pointed out to him that gm has had problems with the differential on this car since it's introduction and that another cadillac dealer told me that they had replaced so many differentials in these cars that they now keep one in stock. the service manager told me that he had never heard of a problem with these cars. i suggested that i should take it another dealership, and left. *jb
