Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles involved in this campaign, the lower control arm ball stud nut/washer assemblies with washers were made of the wrong material. the washers may fracture and become loose or fall away from the vehicle, reducing clamp load. separation of the control arm ball stud and steering knuckle, due to disengagement of the tapered attachment and retaining nut, is possible.
Consequence SummaryIf the control arm separates from the knuckle, the affected corner of the vehicle will drop and the control arm would be forced downward, contacting the wheel. the affected wheel could tilt outward and create a dragging action that would tend to slow the vehicle and create a tendency for the vehicle to turn in the direction of the affected wheel. in extreme situations, the affected wheel assembly could separate from the vehicle. separation of the wheel assembly would also sever that wheel;s hydraulic brake hose and result in diminished braking performance of the vehicle, which could result in a crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect the ball stud joints and measure the torque of the nut for all front lower control arms in all models affected as well as the rear lower control arms on the xlr and corvette. if the torque is not at specification, the dealers will replace the ball stud, the knuckle, and the nut. if the torque is at specification, the dealers will replace the nut/washer assembly only. the recall will begin on august 25, 2004. owners should contact cadillac at 1-866-982-2339 or chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.

My wife was driving her 2004 srx with only 70000 miles. she was traveling at 65 mph when the brakes suddenly started activating and the car swerved to the side almost causing an accident. the error message displayed was service stability on the console. after she told what had happened , i went on the internet and found that too many owners of 2004 srx experienced the same problem. the dealer ended up replacing the sensor on the steering column. from reading and experiencing this problem i wonder how long will it be before someone gets seriously hurt. i think this problem justifies looking into because it is occurring too many 2004 srx (edmunds.com has a lot of complaints). *tr

Cadillac srx 2004, the stabilizer keeps engaging and when it engages, it jerks the car, it makes the car swerve. it engages without notice and if you are not paying attention when it engages, you lose control of the car.

I have a 2004 cadillac srx v8 with a stability system error reoccuring. this happens at least one time every time i drive the car. when the stability system error comes on the car skids a bit, sometimes pulling left or right, or if it comes on when i am breaking, its grinds with the braking and seems to skip a bit. the cadillac dealer says they haven't seen this problems but i have read a least 100 reviews on different websites from customers experiencing the same problems. some of them have even been jerked off of the road when the warning comes on.

Stability control system randomly engages. the car then sometimes vibrates or shutters (brake engaging?) and on two occasions the car tugged to the left. a service stability control message also randomly appears. a cadillac dealer diagnosed the problem as a faulty steering sensor. the repair is not covered by gm and a price of $405 was quoted to fix the problem. because a safety system malfunctions and affects control of the vehicle, a safety recall should be implemented.

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 cadillac srx. while driving at any speed, the vehicle suddenly pulls to the left or the right. the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. the failure has occurred ever since the vehicle was purchased. the current mileage was 135,000 and failure mileage was 60,000.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 20 mph and attempting to make a right hand turn into a parking lot, the steering column completely locked. after attempting to manually turn the steering wheel for twenty minutes the vehicle resumed normal operations on its own. the vehicle was taken to the service dealer who was unable to duplicate the problem. the problem continued to occur intermittently while turning to the left or right. the vehicle was returned to the dealer who determined the power steering hoses were reversed when the vehicle was originally manufactured. the hoses were switched, but this did not remedy the problem. the steering column continued to lock intermittently. in addition to the ongoing steering column problem the vehicle had several other problems as well. the vehicle's engine suddenly stalled without any prior warning while traveling 70 mph. the vehicle was maneuvered safely to the side of the road and was easily restarted after a 30 minute period. the vehicle was taken to a service dealer where it was determined the throttle control had caused the gas supply to shut off to the engine. the throttle was replaced and this remedied the problem. later, the transmission made a noise and the rear end felt loose while traveling 60 mph. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined there were loose nuts on the wheel. all lug nuts were tightened on all four wheels. the tightening of the nuts appeared to remedy both the transmission noise and the loose feeling in the rear of the vehicle. the contact traded the vehicle due to the dealers inability to remedy the ongoing steering problem. updated 3/9/2006 - *nm
