The office of defects investigation (odi) received defect petition dp10-003 on march 2, 2010, requesting the investigation of model year (my) 2003 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4wd pickup trucks for corrosion failures of the vehicle brake lines.dp10-003 was granted and on march 30, 2010, preliminary evaluation pe10-010 was opened on more than six million model year 1999 through 2003 light trucks and sport utility vehicles manufactured and sold by general motors corporation (gm).on july 2, 2010, odi received gm's response to an information request, which included gm's assessment of the frequency and safety consequences of the alleged defect. gm stated that:(1) the brake system of the subject vehicles is split front/rear and should a brake pipe suddenly fail for any reason, the affected vehicle would be capable of stopping with the pressure supplied by the remaining circuit; (2) the subject vehicles were designed to meet the hydraulic circuit partial failure requirements of federal motor vehicle safety standards 105 and 135, light vehicle brake systems; and (3) should a brake fluid leak occur for any reason, the brake system malfunction indicator lamp (mil) would illuminate and warn the driver before the brake fluid level was low enough to cause a loss of line pressure. of the890 total complaints for brake pipe corrosion identified, 761 were located in salt belt states (connecticut, delaware, district of columbia, illinois, indiana, iowa, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia and wisconsin).the complaint rate per 100,000 vehicles sold is significantly higher in the salt belt, 43.0, compared with 3.0 for the remaining states.in approximately 25 percent of the complaints, the brake pipe failure has allegedly occurred suddenly, with no warning to the driver (i.e., no brake warning light), and resulted in extended stopping distances.in 26 of these incidents, the increase in stopping distance that resulted was alleged as a factor in a crash and in 10 others the vehicle was intentionally steered off the road or into another lane of travel in order to avoid a crash.an engineering analysis has been opened for subject vehicles sold or currently registered in salt belt states to further assess the scope, frequency and safety risks associated with sudden failures of corroded brake pipes that can result in decreased brake effectiveness. odi will continue to gather information on subject vehicles outside the salt belt as well.

My son was driving my truck to college and pulled into the parking garage and when looking for a space to park the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. he was able to keep going long enough for the vehicle to coast into a parking spot but the brakes were completely out. g.m. states that the salt that they treat the roads with along with the weather caused the lines to rust out. if that was the case that would be happening to alot more vehicles. i think there is definitely a problem with the brake lines that were installed on these vehicles. *tr

I was towing a new ranger bass boat home from fishing. i was coming down hill toward a stop sign at a intersection and when i hit the brakes. the check brakes came up on info center. the pedal went to the floor. i had to jam it down in to first gear and use parking break to get it slowed enough to turn. it was also a 55mph speed limit road. thank god no one was coming. i got pulled off the road and checked what was going on. the hard break line going to the driver side rear was blown apart. it had rusted completely in half. after further investigation of the lines they are all in extremely bad shape. they are all rusted and now starting to leak in places. along with that my gas line is now rusted in half and now leaking. something needs to be done before someone is killed.

2003 chevrolet silverado 4x4 pickup. service brake system warning appeared on dash display. brakes almost went to the floor. checked the undercarriage and found a major brake fluid leak from the rear driver side brake line. also discovered that all of the brake lines were rusted and corroded. an online web search revealed too many incidents regarding the same topic. any malfunction of a vehicles braking system is a major defect and there should be a recall. *tr

I was driving my 2003 chevy silverado on a rural but residential road with a steep decline at about 35 mph. i attempted to slow down but when i stepped on the brake pedal it went to the floor and the service brakes light came on. it felt like there was air in the brake lines so i attempted pumping the brakes hoping to prevent any more acceleration down the hill and that is about all i got. i could not stop and had no choice but to ride it out until i crossed the bridge at the bottom of the hill and started up the other side.when my truck finaly came to a stop i quikly put it in park to prevent it from rolling backwards down the hill. i popped the hood and got out. i checked the brake fluid and it was almost full so i didn't know how air could get in the brake lines.unfortunately it was snowing out so i couldn't tell if i had a leak. i was only a mile from my house so i decided i would drive it home on a different flat road at very low speed, about 10mph. once home i was able to have my wife press on the brakes while lying under the truck and i found that the brake line supplying the rear brakes was rusted out and had a severe leak. if this had happened a few minutes later i would have been on a state highway doing 45 to 50 mph with other vehicles. why isn't chevy/gm being made to fix these problems ? *tr

Came to a stop but the pedal felt soft, went two more miles to my destination and brakes felt even softer. when i went to leave i noticed a puddle under the drivers door, i put some on my finger to smell it and knew it was brake fluid. i took it to my mechanic who said it was a blown brake line caused by rust, he said he has seen this on alot of silverados. i called my chevy dealer and they didn't offer any recalls or discounts so i had my mechanic replaces all the brake lines because they were rusted as bad as the blown line , also had to replace two calipers because the bleeders were so rusted they couldn't be removed. total cost 850.00 i've had alot of trucks with alot more miles and never had problems with the brake lines. i think g.m. should reimburse at least 50 % of the cost. *tr

I was attempting to stop at a traffic light and ruptured a brake line, when i inspected the brake lines they were completey rusted. i've owned several chevrolets and have had brake line problems with the last three i've owned ,all rusted prematurely in my opinion.i think with a safety issue such as this gm should recall and replace with stainless brake lines all vehicles of less than ten years old.

Brake performance was poor, but brakes did work before servicing the system. replaced rotors, pads, calipers on all four wheels. brakes bled successfully. was beginning a test drive of the vehicle and when putting in reverse brake pedal went to the floor with dash warning of brake system failure. brake fluid was leaking from under the vehicle. inspected and found abs unit to rear brake line failed due to corrosion and line from abs unit to right front failed due to corrosion. inspected lines more carefully and found multiple areas of corrosion on all lines that appeared to be in imminent danger of failing. corrosion seemed to be primarily where lines were placed in plastic clips to hold them in place. the complete system failure was not preceded by any warning and resulted in total loss of front and rear brakes simultaneously. fortunately vehicle was in the repair bay and not moving at the time of failure. *tr

Was attempting to back vehicle and camper trailer down inclined driveway when suddenly the brake pedal went completely to the floor and i had absolute minimum braking force. was able to stop vehicle before it and trailer went over the hill, (an approximate 15 - 20 foot drop if it had occurred). upon inspection i found brake fluid on the driveway. upon further inspection i discovered that a brake line leading from the master cylinder to the abs controller was leaking. upon further inspection i found that all the brake lines were severely corroded and ready to fail. i cannot believe how much rust is present on the brake lines and the fuel lines. this appears to be a major accident waiting to happen. *tr

I was pulling out of a convenience store parking lot when my brake pedal depressed straight to the floor. the truck immediately started showing brake failure warnings. i coasted to a local mechanics and my brake lines had rusted out. i had to have the entire brake line system rewired with non-corrosive material. he told me this is a very common issue on these vehicles. *tr

I parked my truck at a restaurant parking lot no problem. we finished eating, started truck, pushed on brake to put in reverse and pedal went to the floor, no brakes or resistance. inspection revealed no signs of leaks. lines were extremely rusted and eventually a small leak was found in the front driver wheel well area. upon research this is an extremely known issue. as a chevy owner i was never contacted about this issue. luckily no accident occurred but it easily could have as we were on our way home about 30 miles on a 65 mph highway. please advise as to what remedies are being offered. this could be a deadly problem. thanks. *tr

Going down driveway and brakes felt weak. pushed harder on brake pedal and it went to the floor with little residual braking capability left. stopped vehicle with parking brake. upon inspection, noted that the brake line had ruptured along the drivers front wheel well from excessive corrosion. further inspection of the brake lines elsewhere on the vehicle showed corrosion on all brake lines that will necessitate replacement of all the hard formed brake lines for safety reasons. also noted that the brake fluid sprayed directly onto the left catalytic converter. if the vehicle had been fully warmed up, there would probably have been a fire. if this had occurred in traffic, the vehicle could not have been stopped quickly enough to prevent an accident. *tr

Five times truck (17 months old and 21000 miles) has been to dealerships for service 4 wheel drive message center indicator, abs light, parking brake light, alarms, and inoperable. also problems with clanking felt through the steering wheel. every time truck was fixed by replacing/reprogramming the transfer case module, and lubing of steering column (which manufacture indicates was a poor lube job at construction). problem recurred. now dealership informs that the manufacture issued a tsb that instructs dealerships to not replace modules anymore, as gm is aware of problem and new modules will be not fix the problem. were told that gm engineers are investigating it. now, if module fails again, our 4-whhel drive truck will be without 4-wheel drive. date is of first incident. numerous tsbs have been posted concerning these problems, gm does not respond. date indicated is date of first problem at 8000 miles. *ak

Upon starting the vehicle and depressing the brakes, the brakes went to the floor. upon inspection from a mechanic, it was noted that both brake lines were rotted (one was rotted all the way through causing the fluid to leak from the line). we were also told that the gas line and caliper had severe rotting. upon my research, this seems to be a very common problem with chevrolet trucks. i hope this will be resolved so additional chevrolet owners do not have severe accidents due to these issues. my husband and 4 year old son had to walk quite a few miles in 95 degree weather! this is a safety issue and i hope my complaint will help further the investigation. *js

Brakes failed wile driveing, had to use machainal emergency brake to stop. completed stop across two trafic lanes, on coming trafic stoped in time to avoid accedent. brake lines rusted through and blow out letting all brake fluid sprayed out onto street.

I was coming to a very slow stop when the brake pedal went almost to the floor. i tested the brake several times while moving very slowly, and the pedal continued to go to the floor with a swooshing sound. i had someone check underneath the vehicle while i depressed the brake pedal, and he confirmed that brake fluid was shooting all over. my truck is 9 years old but it has only 50,000 miles, the original tires and has had only 2 brakes replaced just recently i believe that it is premature for the brake lines to have suffered a complete blowout. my former chevy truck which i had for 13 years had no problem with brake lines.
04/24/201272000
When i got home today i noticed a clear puddle under the drivers side rear axle. upon investigating the underside of the truck i spotted a hole in the brake line. i followed the line toward the front of the truck and found several places where the line was severally corroded. this is plainly the result of inferior materials used by gm in their vehicles.

We had brake lining failures which result in total lose of brakes. lucky for us we just got off of a main road into a parking lot. advised by an independent repair shop that this is a common problem with this vehicle make model and year. we had two breaks and lost all brake fluid instantly. repair shop said the entire system of brake linings needed to be replaced in our truck at a cost of $827.00!
04/10/201249892
Rusted brake line ruptured while braking and caused immediate loss of braking control. the ruptured brake line is grouped tightly with two other lines, thus it is capturing salt & water causing corrosion. luckily, i was able to actuate parking brake to avoid crash and injuries to others.

Brakes are soft and brake pedal travels almost to the floor when is pushed requiring a substantial amount of foot pressure to get the vehicle to stop in a timely manner and distance. vehicle has a new brake master cylinder, new brake pads, new rotors, and new brake fluid. chevrolet customer service was called and they stated the vin has not been recalled for service brake failures for the hydro-boost relief valve recall (id # 04v045000) or faulty corroded brake lines.

I was pulling into a restaurant today 01/15/12 and hit the brakes and the abs system engaged and wouldn't stop the vehicle. i had to use the emergency brake to avoid a collision. i had hit a bump previously and heard the door chime then less than 10mins later this failure. previously i have had no problems with brakes until then

While riding on merrick road,i stepped on the breaks to stop for a red light. the break pad went to the floor and i went thru the red light with no breaks. no cars were in front of me and the cars on the side streets saw me coming and did not go. i was able to put the car in neutral and coast to a stop further down the road. i had the car towed and the mechanic informed me that 2to3 feet of my breakline was corroded and blew open wend i hit the breaks, the rest of my break lines were good.

I have a 2003 chevy silverado 1500 pickup with 37,000 miles and i believe chevy is using inferior components in the braking system . i had to replace the rotors at 35,000 miles because they started to rust and crumble. once the rotors started to rust large portions would flake off. recently one of my brake lines failed and i rolled thru a stop sign, luckily no one was coming the other way and it was close to my house so i limped it home. upon further inspection i discovered all of the brakes lines were rusted and ready to fail. the entire brake plumbing system on the truck had to be replaced. in addition while replacing the brake lines i also noticed the fuel lines appear to be in pretty bad shape and will probably need to be replaced in the near future. i have the rusted brake lines, i do not have the rotors.

Dt: the vehicle went through ny state inspection on march 28, 2005 and passed although the front end of the vehicle was shaking. four months later the vehicle was taken to the dealer. they determined that the rear rotors were rusted and pitted. gm will only reduce the price from $225 to $79, although it was covered under the warranty. they said it was a wear or rust issue. but the front brake rotors and calipers were fine. gm was not honoring the warranty.*ak the intermediate shaft was replaced due to noise. *nm

Slowly (10 mph) pulled into street, traffic had already stopped. i stepped on brake pedal and it went to the floor. vehicle barely stopped, i thought i was going to hit the already stopped vehicle in front of me. if this had been an attempt to stop from the speed limit i would have hit the other vehicle in the rear. i would hate to think what could happen if it had been an expressway or interstate instead of a light traffic situation in a small town at very low speed. dealer has checked the 2003 chevy silverado 1500 truck computer for codes and said they found no codes and the brake fluid is full, could not duplicate; thus, the brakes need no further examination or repair. this event, although the first to occur, occurred at an optimum time when low speed was involved. this leaves me faithless in the ability of the truck to stop when i apply the brakes. will the event occur again and when????????? *nm
