EA06016GENERAL MOTORS CORP.09/14/200611/09/2007CRANK POSITION SENSOR FAILURE - STALL07V521000
In a letter dated november 7, 2007, general motors (gm) reported to the office of defects investigation (odi) that it will conduct a safety recall (07v-521) to replace the crank position sensor (ckp) in approximately 12,000 model year (my) 2001 chevrolet silverado and gmc sierra vehicles equipped with 8.1 liter engines manufactured on or before november 15, 2000.according to gm, the ckp can fail intermittently or permanently.a permanent ckp failure would result in an engine stall without restart.an intermittent ckp failure could cause the service engine soon light to illuminate, the vehicle to run rough or the engine to stall but allows restart.as a remedy, an improved ckp will be installed in the subject vehicles.the recall campaign will start in december 2007. during the preliminary evaluation (pe06-016), and this ea investigation, gm and odi independently conducted detailed reviews of certain field data to understand the nature and rate of subject vehicle stalling due to ckp failures.gm and odi reviewed gm's warranty claims for the ckp with the objective of ascertaining an estimate of those claims representing an engine stall while driving.the ckp warranty claims without verbatim text were the largest segment of warranty claims.using those claims, gm surveyed vehicle owners to gather additional information to determine if the claim was associated with a stall while driving event.based on the survey, gm estimated that approximately 49% of all warranty repairs for the ckp involved a stall while driving.odi

I have a 2001 chevrolet 2500hd 8.1l with 120k miles. truck runs great but my engine will just shut off. while driving at any speed the engine will shut off then kick on again all by itself. when stopped at a light it will shut off and will not come back on unless i turn the key to start it again. engine is the only thing that dies, stereo, headlights, etc all remain on and i don't get any service lights or messages on the dash when it happens. sometimes if it feels as if it is going to die on me i can step on the gas pedal to prevent it from dying. *tr

Over the past few months i have been experiencing my truck completely shutting down regardless of how fast or slow i'd be driving. having to drive in busy rush hour traffic and through construction zones, it's my opinion that this is an extreme safety concern, not only for myself but others. my truck is at a mechanic's shop and the mechanic told me that there's a code in the computer module that indicates a crankshaft positioning sensor and engine stall and that general motors has a recall relating to this. when i called a local dealership, connell chevrolet in copperas cove, texas they told me that my vehicle wasn't included in the recall because i couldn't honestly tell them that the 'service engine soon light' had came on; and that my truck wasn't running poorly (or a word to that affect). i also contacted general motors and they basically told me the same thing. i am having my truck repaired as i prepare this complaint and i honestly and sincerely hope that general motors includes the symptoms i've experienced and expand the recall, and that anyone who had work done by a mechanic other than at a dealership be reimbursed for the repairs. this problem has existed intermittently over the past few months, as mentioned above. the last incident date is indicated below: *tr

I own a chevrolet 2500hd equipped with a 8.1 liter engine and allison transmission. my problem began with the engine refusing to start after being driven a short while. this problem did not occur every time but was frequent enough to be of concern. after several attempts lasting some 2 to three minutes the engine would start. the problem escalated to the engine stalling while driving on the highway, sometimes on the interstate at speeds up to 70 mph. during these stalls the engine would sometime restart on its own without turning the key or shifting out of gear. during times of stalling the only way to maintain some control of the vehicle is to shift into neutral and turn the key to attempt a restart. at these times the engine turning over provides enough compression to allow the power steering and brakes to be affective as long as the starter is engaged. *jb

2001 chevrolet 2500hd. 8.1 liter motor, allison transmission. the truck has multiple problems that the dealer is refusing to acknowledge and fix. *la -hard starting when hot. when the vehicle is driven and parked for 10 minutes, it will not start. engine turns over, but does not fire. after an additional 2-3 minute wait, it will eventually start. this happens on a regular basis. dealer had the truck for 1 week and claims he can not reproduce the problem. they suggested replacing parts with no garantee of the fix. -exhaust failing. the exhaust was replaced under warranty due to loose baffles. it is failing again with the same problem. dealer again claims the noise is normal. -excessive oil consumption. i had it in for this problem. the dealer changed the oil and had me come in every 500 miles to check the oil level. it used 1 1/2 quarts in 3,000 miles. this is normal to use this much oil. how ever i tow a trailer and plow snow with this vehicle. during these times of towing and plowing, the truck uses 3-4 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles. there are no obvious leaks. the dealer again claims there is no problem. this vehicle was purchased with the large motor and heavy duty transmission specifically for the type of work i expect it to do.

The truck kept dying so i took it in to a dealership. he replaced the battery and two days later it was dying again. they still haven't figured out what the problem is. *la

Turck engine has a knock that i was told by the dealer and gm that it was simply a cold start knock. however, i was told by a personal friend at the gm tech center that it is really a piston slap, and is a result of the pistons being too small for the bore which could lead to engine seizure/failure, and that gm is aware of it! the truck knocks even when engine is warm. i have begged for a repair under the trucks warranty but have been denied. i am concerned that at some point the engine could seize and cause a serious accident and harm to myself and others. gm seems to think if they pretend it is a different problem, and if they cross their fingers they will save money and avoid a recall. the dealer indicated to me that they know what the problem is and so does gm but there is nothing they can do for me. at one point gm was offering to extend my warranty but renigd because i was the second owner, even though i paid for their extended warranty. please investigate before someone owning one of these trucks does have the engine sieze and innocent people are hurt! incident date is approximate as i have taken the truck to the dealer many times on many dates in hopes of getting this problem fixed because they want me to go away. *ak

2001 chevrolet silverado 8.1 liter engine will intermittently stall in traffic. service engine light is on and dealer diagnostics say it is a faulty crankshaft position sensor. there is already a recall out for this (gm recall 06083) or nhtsa campaign id # 07v521000, however, the dealership says that my vin # is not covered. my vehicle is exhibiting the identical problems outlined in the recall, so the problem is obviously larger than the few vin's that they are covering. *tr

Starting early march 2007, my 2001 chevrolet 2500hd, 8.1l truck began to stall in many and different circumstances. i was first stopped at a light on a business trip then began to go and shortly after the engine died and various lights illuminated on the dash and system warning box. from that point it has continued to stall at different speeds and different times for no apparent reason. it has restarted each time, sometimes after just a minute and sometimes up to 5 or so minutes. to date it has not been determined the cause and no one can tell me how to fix it. this is deeply troubling due to the fact that my wife drives it a lot and carries my three children with her and it has continued to stop on major roads, rural roads, and just anywhere it decides. this needs to be addressed thoroughly!!! *jb

When the truck starts it sounds like a diesel- for about 10 min max- this only happens in the am or after a long sit at work (ie.6+ hrs) we were told by the dealer that its normal and that there is a tech bulletin on it- my father in laws truck (1500) doesn't make this noise and it is the same year as mine. also the new trucks do not make this noise-- i do think that something is going on and that the dealer or manufacturer doesn't want to fix it since its a shame- going to lose more than one faithful chevy consumer. *jb

Since new the vehicle has developed an engine knock, i have talked to 4 other people with the same problem, the dealer advises there is no repair at this time! and advised me that they are aware of problems with the 6 and 5.3 liter engines. i am worried that this problem will reduce the engine life and i am conserned about the manufacturer stance of no repair at this time thanks. *ak
