The preliminary evaulation is being upgraded.during the ea odi will limitits investigation to only those vehicles equipped with a hydro-boost system, which provides power assist to the braking and steering sytems.vaccuum brake booster vehicles are excluded.odi hasexpanded the scope of the ea to include model years2003 and 2004, asduring the pe, odi learned that the hydroboast pumps were modified in febraury 2004.therefore,odi has expanded the scope to include the additional model years.odi's is concerned because thisisa sudden failure that affects two critical systems of the vehicle, brakes and steering, at the same time.the ability of the operator to handle the dual failures is a concern. further, these vehicles tend to be work vehicles, with some over 10,000 pounds gvwr and many equipped to pull large trailers.dual failures of heavily loaded vehicles and vehicles pulling trailers further increases the safety risk.odi plans to conduct testing to quantify the braking and steering performance degradation and the impact on safe vehicle control, when a hydroboast pump fails.

Gm is conducting a recall on all subject vehicles build between may 1999 and october 14, 1999.significant changes were incorporated into production in early october 1999, and vehicles built after that date have lower warranty failure rates.the complaint and warranty data appear to support the effectiveness of these changes. gm made additional changes in november 1999, february 2000, may 2001, and february 2004.odi will continue to monitor this problem and will take further action, if warranted, in the future.for further technical details see the attached engineering analysis report.

Traveling at 65 mph brakes all of a sudden the brakes were applied w/o applying them loss of steering control etc. evaluating this problem ii saw that the brake pedal was going down to the floor, so i pulled up on it with my foot and the brakes released but steering control did not resume.i got off at the next exit and very slowly made my way on home.any application of the brake pedal resulted in brakes locking up and they were applied so tightly that any acceleration could not speed up unless i pulled up on the brake pedal.upon arriving home looked things over no power steering unless motor was at high rpm, power steering pump looked as if it expelled fluid out the breather capand the brakes smelled as if very hot.now that this happened i recognized this had happened before but somehow repaired itself, but not to this extreme.i suffered bruises from shoulder harness and seatbelt and some knots on my head from being throwed around i came so close to out of control and a rollover simply couldnt control my truck

Dt: while pulling out of the driveway going 10 mph or less consumer realized he didn't have any brakes and the steering was not working. consumer put vehicle in reverse to stop and nothing happened. consumer then drove home in reverse. consumer called a mechanic, who loaded the vehicle, and took it to the shop where everything worked fine. consumer talked to service manager at dealership, and asked the mechanic to see if power steering pulley wiggled. mechanic did so, and said shaft broke. consumer had this replaced, but later discovered the old part that was taken off was not broken. no problems now with the vehicle. *ak *sb *nm

Complaint received via e-mail. i have a 2001 chevrolet 2500 hd with 44,000 miles on it, and just had to have power steering pump replaced for the same reason, a broken shaft. my daughter backed it out of my driveway, and with no warning, lost steering and brakes, and almost hit the telephone pole across the street. i have had so many problems with that truck since i have owned it. transmission had to be replaced, broken rocker arm in the engine, windshield wipers breaking, horn blowing fuses, u-joint had to be replaced.*ak

My power steering pump failed, resulting in significant reduction in braking and steering function. this is of special concern to me as i frequently tow a 10,000 pound fifth-wheel trailer. the failure occurred in october of 2003 and the pump was replaced by the dealer under warranty. *nm

2001 chevrolet 2500hd pickup had a complete power brake and power steering failure almost resulting in a crash as i was almost not able to bring the vehicle to a stop. luckily no one was in front of me. mechanic states that pump shaft had a break in it. i've still got the part if that would help with your investigation. luckily i was not towing my 10,000 pound rv trailer at the time of the failure or i may not have been able to control the vehicle. *ak

Started cold vehicle. backing out of garage i had no power brakes nor power steering. removed power-steering pump resivoir cap and air and fluid belched out. after that it performed normally.*ak
