Tread separation from tire and subsequent body damage to vehicle. there is currently a recall on this very same make and model of tire, and for the same problem, however my tire was purchased prior to the range covered by the recall. bf goodrich has told me that there is nothing that they can do for me. *tr

Our 2001 chevrolet silverado 2500hd truck, which is still under warranty, was presented to firestone on saturday april 10, 2004 at 10am to show them excessive cracks surrounding sidewalls consistently on all four original tires. they gave us a report of the tread wear on the bottoms which was not the concern we had and offered us a pro-rated rate of 45% off of the manufactures suggested retail which would come to $489 with costs. we explained that the tires were dry rotting and dave, the service manager at the greensburg, pa firestone tire & service center explained that cliff from firestone's engineering dept, the regional manager had told him that there are three stages of dry rot and if the tires were dry rot you would be able to fit a penny into the cracks. this is where we left off as of today and will be communicating further with them.

I had my firestone steeltex radial a/t tires rotated by the dealership(jay wolfe cheverolet) on my 2001 silverado 2500 hd short bed crew cab. tire size lt245/75r16 load range e. this was done on 07/05/05. i had noticed a wobble in the steering wheel and a slight pulling to the right, that seemed to become more noticeable the more i drove it. i checked tire pressures, lug nuts, tread wear. everything looked fine. tires have 51,780 miles on them, and were not down to the tread wear indicators. on 07/12/05 i was traveling down i-35 n at 60 mph when all of the sudden the front right tire completeley seperated the tread from the rest of the tire, luckily, the tire did not blow out, and i was able to keep it under control and bring it to a stop on the side of the highway, the tread seperation did quite a bit of damage to the vehicle, right front quarter panel, wheel well shroud, rockerpanel, right outside mirror. i am awaiting an estimate from the body shop. i have replaced all four tires with michelins, that same day. i have kept the failed tire and tread that seperated.

While driving my 2001 chevrolet 2500 hd crew cab 4x4 south on us 59 in houston texas the tread fully separated off the right rear firestone steeltex a/t 245/75r16, load range e, dot no.vn11bac5300 at approximately 10:30 on april 21, 2004. just prior to separation, truck started vibrating (speed was approximately 65 mph). the vibration then became violent followed by loud noises. at this time i noticed large chunks of rubber flying all over the highway, followed by what appeared to be the entire tread. the entire event only lasted seconds. i pulled over as soon as possible finding the tire still fully inflated, but missing the entire tread. there were no injuries, but damage has been estimated at $4018.38. i have rotated my tires on regular basis and maintained chevrolets recommended pressures. i can prove the tire that lost it's tread had been at 80 psi from december 2003 to days prior to the seperation. i filed a claim with bridgestone/firestone north american tire, llc and paid to ship the tire to them. their response dated 5/5/2004, claim ref. no. 913329 was we have carefully inspected your tire. we did observe signs that the tire had been operated for an unknown period of time while being in an over-deflected state causing the detachment you experienced... we must respectfully deny your request for compensation. my tires have been at chevrolet recommended air pressure since i bought this truck new. i have also never exceeded the gvwr, gawr frt or gawr rr load ratings. what i have found out through the internet is there seems to be lots of other folks that have had the same problem. i am in the process of taking them to small claims court vs. filing with my insurance because firestone has a defective product. i hope this agency can help protect consumers from future injuries and driving up our insurance costs. if allowed, post my email as bcothran@houston.rr.com - i would like to hear from others who have been thru this.*ak
