Tl*the contact owns 2004 chevrolet avalanche. the contact was driving 55 mph when the rpms increased. the contact had difficulty switching gears and the vehicle lost power. the windshield wipers would not shut off unless the contact restarted the vehicle. the transmission and the water pump failed completely. the driver side door handle broke and the contact cannot get out of the vehicle unless she climbs over the passenger seat. the speedometer only displayed 10 and 20 mph whenever it was cold outside. the failure mileage was 23,965 and the current mileage was 97,323.

My 2004 avalanche speedometer and tachometer read completely inaccurate. example=shows me going 120mph and 3000m rpm with motor off. i bought the vehicle used from a chevy dealer and was told it had warranty remaining. when the problem began last year i was told it was not warranted. i lacked the money for the replacement and have been driving it broken. now i am finding out through other avalanche owners that it has been being fixed by dealers at no charge as there have been so many problems. i feel this should be a recall. i know my vehicle now has 110,000 miles, but i can document by law enforcement notes on a ticket i received last year that i had the problem about 30,000 miles ago. i feel this should be repaired at no expense to me. they told me when i called that their parts dept had a long waiting list for the replacement panel so you know ?chevrolet knew they had a widespread problem. thank you. i hope to hear back from you. also at about the same time my abs/brake light started coming on after i drive a few miles. i don't know if it is as common of a problem or related to the instrument panel problem or not. *tr

Failure has occurred twice on my 2004 avalanche surrounding the inefficiencies within my dash board. the speedometer was reading incorrectly. it was very dangerous as the accurate speed was not reporting. i was able to get this replaced at about 40,000 miles. recently, the gas gauge is not working correctly. after filling up the tank and taking a road trip the gas gauge immediately reported an empty gas reading. the gas gauge continues to read incorrectly and fluctuates. i have contacted the company to find out that there is a service warranty on the vehicle up to about 70,000 miles. currently my truck is at 86000 miles all due to highway traffic to work (30 miles each way). i do not feel that i should expense this cost since this is clearly a factory issue. regardless of the number of miles on the vehicle if it is a known defect it should be covered. this is very dangerous as i could run out of gas on the road. this is also very disappointing as this depicts the quality of the vehicle. my father has bought nothing but chevrolet's over the years and states how efficient the vehicles are. in addition i have already replaced the entire dash board once from the first incident surrounding the speedometer to have received another defective dash board surrounding the gas gauge. *tr

I own a 2004 chevrolet avalanche. the speedometer began going out at 60,000 miles, and now the gas gauge and tachometer occasionally fail. i have 123,000 miles on my vehicle. the local dealer, ryan chevrolet, informed me that gm would have fixed it prior to 72,000 miles. i found this out after 85,000 miles. *tr

My 2004 chevy avalanche's speedometer has been sticking on 65 for a week now. today it completely went out and stays on 0 mph now. i have no idea what i am going to do now other than not drive it until i can afford to repair it. every bit of research i have done on this matter shows that thousands of other people are having the same problem. i baby my truck and take excellent care of it. it has 66,000 miles on it. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche. while driving 45 mph, the speed control stopped working. the speedometer needle was not registering any speed. the contact attempted to receive assistance from chevrolet, but was unsuccessful. chevrolet stated that they were not responsible due to the mileage on the vehicle. the current mileage was 76,104 and failure mileage was 72,000.

Several instances where the speedometer read 0 mph when traveling at various speeds. one instance where the speedometer read 120 mph when traveling at 65 mph. always occurs during first trip in morning and then seems to reset when it has been shut-down and a period of time has passed. *jb

My 2004 avalanche speedometer started sticking, first i thought i was going about 45 mph, when i realized that i was passing everyone. i accelerated and noticed that the speedometer didn't move. now it sticks at various speeds and stays that way. it has gone past 120 mph. gm really needs to look at this problem and fix it. this is a serious safety issue. especially on reduced speed curves and construction. is gm waiting for a fatality to issue a service recall? *jb

The speedometer has malfunctioned on several occasions. most recently july 24, 2007. i was driving down a highway and it jumped to 75mph -approx 20mph faster than i was actually doing. upon coming to a complete stop, the needle settled on 21-22mph mark. the needle doesn't move smoothly either. it jitters as it moves and jumps more as it is fixing to come to a rest. after turning the vehicle off, then back on - the needle will fall about 5mph. i had turn shut off / restart several times to get the needle back to 0mph. today, i drove to work and didn't see a problem outside of a jittery needle. previously the speedometer has stopped all together while driver and settle on 0 mph or will max at 35mph while driving. at these instances i would pull over, turn the vehicle off and back on to no avail. however, opening the door, which i guess turns off the electricity to the vehicle (radios goes off when door is opened), seemed to reset everything. a few things concern me about this. *i am fixing to take it to a dealer, but i believe my warranty is out and they will not fix it without huge $$$$. *i had purchased a brand new 2003 cavalier and had the same thing happen to the instrument cluster. luckily, i caught it very soon after, and during warranty, and was able to have it fixed for free. i'm not sure what the dealer will say but i'm not very optimistic about it right now. *tr

The speedometer on the 2004 chevrolet avalanche works intermittently it will indacate that the speed is 65 mph when i am actuauly going 75 mph. sometimes it will read the opposie or not at all. general motors has indicated that this is not a safety problem. this is a safety issue. it is very dificult to exit the highway onto a ramp when you are not sure how fast you are going. *ak

Starting in november of 2006, the speedometer has not operated correctly. when sitting at a stop, it registers 30-50 mph and when actually driving, it goes to 120 and stays there. does not come back down until vehicle is turned off. this is a very serious issue - or is it chevrolet's way of earning extra money? the dealer wants to charge over $1500 to fix the problem since due to mileage we are out of warranty. *jb

Over the last few months i have noticed that my 2004 chevy avalanche speedometer suddenly goes off by 10-80 miles an hour. there are no events that cause this to occur, it appears to do it randomly. i notice it when the vehicle suddenly appears to be going faster or slower than the speed indicated. i tried contacting the dealer for repair but they have ignored my online repair appointment submittal. the upsetting part is that my warranty just ran out. this is a major problem and needs to be fixed. luckily my cell phone has gps and will indicate ground speed. i can use it to verify the vehicle speed. i am lucky that i have not gotten a ticket or killed. i have a photo of my speedometer nearly pegged out at 115 miles an hour to prove it. i have never driven my vehicle that fast. i heard that others are having problem with gm suv speedometers. this appears to be a wide spread problem. *jb

I have a 2004 chevrolet avalanche z66 and it has 45k miles on it. the speedometer has stopped working. it either sticks in one spot or jitters but i can be in park and it says i am going 60 mph. gm has not recalled this although i found a website www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-avalanche/tji11lgm9554merna and there are 46 posts on this website of people having the same problem with the 04 avalanche and gm has not recalled it yet. *jb

My 2004 chevy avalanche is having a problem with the speedometer. i was on a cross country trip and it started going past 120 when i was driving 10 mph in the snow!!! the it sticks at whatever speed it feels like sticking on.. my rpm gauge has been acting a bit funny also. it didn't work at one point just last night. i turned the truck off and restarted it. i can been able to reset the speedometer by almost turning the truck on until it gets back to 0, but i am afraid this will eventually break my starter. this is a safety issue (even though gm says it is not) because if speed wasn't a factor in auto safety we wouldn't have speed limits! how can a consumer be safe if they cannot tell how fast they are driving? *nm

 1) i haven't replaced anything, or done anything that would cause this to happen. 2) a-problem that im experiencing is that when my avalanche is sitting still in the driveway the speedometer shows that i am doing 30 to 40 miles per hour. when i drive on the freeway it completely stops working and goes to over 120 mph. b-my drivers side window doesn't work either, the motor slowly started giving out about two months ago. now it doesn't work at all. it seems like many more chevy avalanche owners have the same issue; http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-avalanche/tji11lgm9554merna 3)the only thing i did for the window not working was check some fuses that were good. *nm

I have a 2004 chevrolet avalanche with 38,456 miles and the speedometer is erratic. it began yesterday, 12/25/06 while driving to my family's christmas dinner. i was on the freeway 70 mph and the speedometer needle jumped to 95 mph without me accelerating. i exited the freeway, came to a complete stop and the speedometer needle registered 35 mph. this morning 12/26/06, the speedometer is still incorrect. it now registers 20 mph in park. i have researched this on the internet and this seems to be a common problem with chevy trucks/suv's 2003 or newer. it seems gmc needs to issue a recall. repair cost seem to start at $500 and go up. from what i was able to decipher, the cluster needs to be replaced. *jb

No events before speedometer started to stick i was driving on interstate when my needle showed 90 mph but i felt like i was doing 70 mph and when i finally stopped it showed 40 mph and now when driving on interstate i don't know how fast i am going but it shows 120 mph i am driving by rpms i know between 2000 and 3000 rpms i should be around 80 mph. *nm
