Gm has a safety issue with dashboards cracking near where the airbag deploys on the passenger side of the vehicles. there is also cracking on the left side of the instrument pod. all cracks are in identical areas of these same model years and newer. i have 2 vehicles (2007 tahoe and 2007 avalanche with same cracks and will file 2 complaints)

Dashboard crack on passenger side next to airbag.

The dash is cracked next to the airbag on passenger side. manufacturer refuses to fix or replace without the consumer taking responsibility and paying for replacement. this is a one owner vehicle, garage parked, dash-mat since first acquired truck. this seems to be a very widespread problem for gm vehicles of the same make and other similar vehicles. i have a huge safety concern that the airbag upon deployment will be ruptured and become ineffective due to the crack in the dash possibly puncturing the airbag. it is also very evident that this is a manufacturing flaw that gm will not stand up for and take responsibility.

Date of current incidents: 1/3/11; 1/4/11; 7/28/11; 8/23/11; 9/07/11; 12/9/11; 12/16/11; 6/4/12; 6/10/12 and 6/11/12 and 6/l7/12. the engine light comes on; engine reduce power light, stabilizer tract light comes on plus oil light and other lights. i have had it in the shop to try to figure out why my avalanche keeps breaking down. and i was told that they can not find a problem. i was never informed that they have had probems with the wiring. in december 2011 my avalanche shut itself off during a snow storm. eventually, it started but because of reduced power it would only go between 35-45 miles per hour. i made it to a repair shop, they could not find a problem, but replaced sensors and/or relays. in june 2012 the lights came on, i could only go approx 35-40 miles per hour. called and set up an appointment. on the way to the appointment the engine oil light came on and the car shut down. i had to call for a tow truck. i took it to a non dealer service repair shop, because they were the closest. when they looked the car over the wires were eaten. i was informed that the newer cars have a soy base in their wiring and that the rodents love to eat this product. why are they using this soy based wiring? this is not safe. i can not have my vehicle break down leaving me stranded on the side of the road. it is getting very costly when parts are being replaced when it is the wiring that is faulty. i live in the country and i can not keep the mice out of my truck. please look into why the car manufactures are using this product which is causing major safety and financial concerns why aren't the manufactures informing the public of this problem.

Cracked dashboard directly above airbag on passenger side on 2007 z71 avalanche (original owner). this is apparently a manufactures defect and is apparently happening on numerous gm vehicles for this model year. gm is unwilling to fix saying it is not a defect and is only cosmetic and will not fix.

2007 chevrolet avalanche has two cracks in the dash. one in the upper left hand corner near the passenger side airbag and one on the left side of the instrument cluster.

My 2007 chevrolet avalanche ltz has been in the shop 10x for grinding and squeaking noises coming from the right front wheel. the dealership stated they cannot duplicate this even though their service techs heard it twice. the brakes have been replaced and the rotors re-surfaced, with the problem begining @ 22,000 miles and continuing to this day at 44,000. the sound has been caught on video several times at different mileages but gm continues to state that it is not a concern to them. the sound begins slowly as the truck picks up speed it increases and then finally disapears at @ 35mph.

Dash crack far left corner on 07 avalanche causes airbag unit to not sit properly in mounts. area on indicated part of dash flimsy not reinforced. damage caused by heat (speculating,) spilt 2 from 0 in 6hrs during drive from san diego ca to las vegas nv, no prior damage or signs of stress. due to passenger airbag not seated properly, afraid if airbag deployed may not deploy correctly. dealer considers crack cosmetic, says airbag is independent and should not be affected which i agree but that doesn't mean it will open if it can be jarred from its seating in the dash if it can dislodge. and in an accident with enough force to deploy airbag it could be thrust upward from its seating and thus changing the angles of which it is inteneded to cover during deployment. i see a potential flaw here due to oversight in engineering and feel it needs further review. i have included a video i found on youtube that shows a dash in a 07 tahoe (same dash as 07 avalanche) which is cracked the same way, it clearly shows how due to this crack the airbag unit is not secure in its seating and could potentially jump out as well the flimsiness in the dash area i am speculating towards lack of reinforcement. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_drp8slwvgo&feature=related *please note that no crack or indication of stress was visable 2 days prior, dealer considers crack to be strictly cosmetic and not covered under warranty. i agree the crack in nature is cosmetic however being that it can disrupt a crucial life-saving component the manufacture should be required to repair so that all possible effected systems function correctly as required.
