Defect SummaryVehicle description: certain 4-wheel drive pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles equipped with abs (antilock braking system) manufactured from september 1989 through august 1996. under certain driving conditions the switch which signals the abs system whether the vehicle is in 2-wheel or 4-wheel drive can malfunction causing increased stopping distances during abs stops while in the two-wheel drive mode.
Consequence SummaryIf this occurred at a time when minimum stopping distance was required, a vehicle crash could occur without prior warning.
Corrective SummaryDealers will replace or repair the 4-wheel/2-wheel drive switch.

Consequence SummarySeparation of the rotor sections can cause loss ofbraking ability in the affected wheel. this could result in increased stoppingdistance and/or loss of vehicle control and an accident.
Corrective SummaryReplace the front brake rotors with new rotors with a corrosion protection coating. however, if replacement of brake linings are necessary, it will be done at owner's expense since brake linings are normal maintenance items.

 Consumer was having fuel injection system problems. fuel was being dumped into the engine. consumer has taken vehicle to the dealer twice and they could not fix it. when this happened vehicle jerked and black smoke came from the back. then, vehicle will not run. also, consumer was experiencing braking problems. brake pedal sometimes went all the way to the floor before it stopped. this made her feel very uncomfortable.*ak

(10/30/90).returned to dealer 11/1/90 for excessively low brake pedel, system was bled, no codes stored.did not get two miles from dealer and the same thing happened.turned around and went back to dealer.system re-bled,still no codes. 5/5/93 was pulling up behind a line of traffic at a stop sign and stepped on the brakes and it was as if they let go completely.hit the rear bumper of the car in front of me.paid for the damage on the other car,my car still damaged.called dealer the next day and was told what the brakes did was normal.continued to have problems.6/7/93 took the car to dealer for other warrenty work and again complained about the brakes and again was told normal.stayed out of trouble by luck and driving with the knowledge that the car might not stop if i had to get on the brakes in a hurry.recall work preformed on the abs unit on 6/19/00.on 8/15/00 i had a total failure of the brakes.happened as i was pulling off the lot of a local grocery store.made it to a local shop by using low gear and the emergency brake.they checked the obvious things and had a brake shop confirm that it was probably the echu.had car towed to the dealer and surprise, the codes showed this time.they said some valves were bad.cost me 1556.36 with the towing.i feel like i've been taken.i don't care if the car is 20 years old there should not be a total failure at 43000 mi.it really bothers me that in another 5 min. i would have been on the interstate and someone else may have been filing this conplaint.i have documents from jim butler and a police report number to confirm this information.the car may still be in jim butlers records under my deceased husbands name, edward osthoff.

 While driving stepped on brake pedal, but vehicle would not stop on time. *ak right exhaust manifold , exhaust pipe and oxygen sensor failed. there was a clunk intermittently from back on turns due to broken torsion bar mounts. 4wd often hard to engage due to vac switch in transfer case failure. replace rear main seal, oil pan and gasket because of rust and oil leak. serpentine belt failed. distributor cap and rotor failed. axle seals and bearings are leaking. *yh

 This is safety problem with all 91& 92 (and possibly more) s-10 blazers - i have tried many 91 & 92 anytime i saw someone with one - i took quite awhile before i realized it - when making a panic stop as in quickly pushing down the brake pedal - it fights back for about 1 second - this doesnt sound like much but - if a child runs out between parked cars - every second counts - i have tried other gm vehicles and this problem does not exsist - only on s-10 blazers - the dealer said it was normal with dual action brake boosters when i showed them years ago (i have just recently become aware of your service). *ak

 Abs brake problems; on normal road conditions, during normal braking, sometimes the blazer would stop and sometimes it would roll another 10 or 15 before stopping. about 1 year later, the abs computer was replaced. in 1995 the brake pads were replaced with 40,000 miles. one week later the abs warning light came on. adjustments was made by dealer and the light went off. *ak
