I purchase my vehicle used on 12/4/01 , i have had to replace the temperature gauge every year because it indicates it is overheating. 3 weeks ago it started saying it was overheating and smoke filled the interior of my vehicle with fumes. it was repaired. at 3:15 p.m. today, my car indicates it is overheating and now the service car light is on. this has been an ongoing issue with the coolant system. as soon as i turn the car on it indicates it is overheathing. happening too many times. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1996 chevrolet blazer. the contact stated that the air conditioner would not function. in addition, the radiator hose was leaking and the vehicle was taken to a repair shop for inspection. the contact was informed that there was a crack on the block (heater core) of the radiator. the radiator hose was leaking at the connection of the hose. the vehicle also overheated at times, in which the mechanic stated that this failure was included in nhtsa campaign id number 06e043000 (fuel system, gasoline). the dealer refused to perform the recall repair because other work needed to be done at the contact's expense. the current mileage was 169,123 and failure mileage was approximately 165,000. updated 09/15/08 *bf the consumer stated brown sludge was found in the radiator. updated 09/18/08. *jb

Dt*: the contact stated shortly after the vehicle was parked, flames were noticed dropping to the ground under the front end of the vehicle. grey smoke was also observed coming from under the hood. the vehicle burned completely, and was considered a total loss. there was a police report and a fire department report processed at the scene. the heat from the fire melted the rear end of another vehicle parked in front of it, and did moderate damage to a third vehicle parked alongside the second vehicle. *ak updated 12/01/06. *jb

Purchased 1996 chevy blazer 1/15/04 from carmax. experienced frequent issues with heating and cooling. 3/22/05 1st mechanic found no trouble for 2 days, then determined thermostat was bad. 2nd mechanic replaced thermostat. broke down twice due to pressure in cooling system forcing radiator hoses off. 6/4/05 mechanic reseated hoses & clamps, replaced radiator cap, and flushed system. 25 miles away from shop temp shot up to 260 degrees and blew all fluid out. tried refilling and water is rushing out of the radiator end caps as fast as we're filling it. there's an extremely high level of sludge that appears to be dex-cool related in the overflow tank and has also been seen in the fluids that have been draining during breakdowns.

Our blazer started over heating, we had it flushed due to a mud looking sluge in the cooling system and a new thermostat put in. about a month later it started over heating again. we again had it flushed and another new thermostat put in. a few weeks later it again over heated we had it towed in and found out that this time it had caused the motor to blow. we contacted gm they said it was not their proublem it was dexcool, we contacted dexcool and they said it was gm's proublem. we got the run around so we contacted the atty generals office and filled a complaint with them.

I have had to change the oil coolant lines on my 1996 s-10 blazer 5 times since i have owned the auto. i purcheased it in 1998. it was still under warranty then, and the first time they did the work free of charge. since then, every 12-18 months i find oil dripping in my garage, and i am told it is these lines. i have been told by 3 different mechanics that these vehicles are notorious for this problem. can't anything be done!!

I had to replace the front brakes and get new rotors after 30,000 miles. brakes are very loose, takes a lot of pressure to get them to stop. dealer said my brakes were worn out, and needed to be replaced just 15k miles after the first service. anti-lock feature kicks in when i drive over potholes or ice, and did not use the brakes. also, windshield wiper problem. wipers stop working intermittently. dealer replaced the motor. dealer said motor had shorted out, but the problem started to occur again. when the wipers stop and later start, after manipulating the controls, the overhead digital temperature guage turns off and on. power window stuck in down position. has been replaced twice. these three electrical problems (wiper, window, digital guage) seem related as they all cause a battery drain as indicated through the volt meter. battery went dead after 6 hour road trip. approx 50k miles on vehicle at time. had been running the a/c the whole time, which seemed to drain battery. *ak

Purchased vehicle 12/03 since then have replaced: water pump 3 times, radiator, thermostat, left upper ball joint, upper manifold gasket, main real seal. over the past 6-8 months i have noticed the braking issue several times (more than 10.) luckily none were emergency stops, however when braking due to traffic light change or stopping while going downhill, the brakes chatter, an audible whine is produced, and it is necessary to pump the brakes before it will regain pressure and stop. *jb

The radiator and cooling system on my 1996 chevrolet balzer gets rusty and clogged every couple of years. in 1998 the whole radiator was taken out and boiled. in 2001 the cooling system was flushed again due to rust and clogging. and now, april 2004, the system has clogged again and causes engine overheat. gm uses dex cool which is supposed to last five years, but every couple of years this coolant seems to clog the system and requires an overhaul costing around $400. *la

1996 chevrolet blazer has had numerous problems with cooling system due to bad anti-freeze general motors used in the vehicle of this vintage. they charged me to have the system flushed out because the anti-freeze would clog the heater coils. no heater in winter. previously the vehicle was over heated and dealership replaced the thermostat and water pump plus seals and head gasket due to the engine running too hot. this is the 4th time i'm returning it and now they want me repair or replace the radiator. it is still running hot. it is my understanding from talking to the mechanics that this is a problem for vehicle of this vintage and it took a couple of years for gm to change anti-freeze manufacturers. do i have any recourse? *nlm

Just brought 96 blazerls with 82,000 in dec.02. was told that the only problem was they had to have the transmission replaced at 20,000. well,83,000 miles the heater was on hot blowing when i noticed that it turn cold and the gage went to the red zone. i immediately turn swiches off on the blower it went back to normal. two days later it happen again but i turn off the heater and blower completely it went back to normal. we thought the termostact got stuck and replaced it . at that time we notice that it was gel up over the termostact, after replacing it , we tested drove it and it still did the same thing again. we looked at the radiator and found that it was gel up and look like rubber. we then decided to check the fluid in the transmission we noticed that the dipped stick was rusted on the outside and was rusted the length of the stick the fluid was rusted. we will now have to flushed the radiator and transmission. i had checked your site and found no recalls or service bulletins on the geling and transmissions before buying. tell today when i decided to checked out complaints and found that there was 54 and couple with the same problems of geling and transmission problems. so i decided to check out 98 because my sisterinlaw had just brought one and no recalls or service bulletins but they are compalints of cool heating (probably from geling anitifreeze) and transmissions being replaced once ,twice and i guy 3 times. so i check 2001 and they was someone else replacing a transmission. something is very wrong when there is geling of antifreeze from 96 to 98 and replacing transmissions left and right since 96. to me chevrolet has a bad transmission problems and geling problems in these blazers getting away with it. from now on i'll check out complaints before recalls or service bulletins there's the consumers eyes and ears.

Entire cooling system clogged with a sandy substance. mechanic says radiator, water pump, thermostated, and a number of other componets need to be replaced at a cost of over $1500.00. mechanic says he is seeing this on a regular basis with 1996 blazers. while a number of complaints in your database point to problems with the dexi-cool coolant, the mechanic says in his view it is not the coolant as this problem is only with 1996 blazers. he believes it is sand from a faulty problem with the engine blocks were cast. the excess sand is now breaking off and clogging the coolant systems causing major repairs. gm has ignored all complaints. this is a major problem as the vehicles are overheating and resulting in people getting stranded on highways, etc.
While driving engine does not heat up to proper temperature in the winter months, and in summer months it overheats. chevrolet has admitted to the problem, but will not do anything about it. please provide any further information. *ak

This cooling system failure has resulted in my having to replace the heater core and hoses as well as the radiator due to the amount and thickness of the corrosion/rust inside. the system will have to be flushed...chevy is aware of this issue as referenced by their repair bulletins...the extend and cost of the damage is understated.... im out of pocket $1400 to replace a radiator a heating core and other component due to not being notified sooner about the possibility of the problem occurring and thereby having the vehicle inspected for the probably issue!

Many problems are continuing. currently, the front suspension needs repaired, the brakes were replaced at 18000 and are now gone again, the rear seals are leaking damaging the rear brakes, the drive lights still flash intermittently, a smell of gasoline is in the vehicle after refueling, the engine pings no matter what fuel is used. nothing the dealer has done has solved the multitude of problems. seat belt problems on passenger side, interior trim fell off, on and on.

Contaminated coolant four times in last two years, believe that combination of bad product and location of radiator lines causes this very expensive repairs. seem to be limited to 1996-1997 blazers, jimmys, sonomas, s10s etc. it is a joke about their 100,000 mile coolant, should be a class action suit because there are hundreds of owners with this problem.

Vehicle was not blowing heated air. after initial analysis of closest dealer (fox chevrolet - laurel md.), it was diagnosed that engine coolant had jelled. i instructed them not to repair due to excessive estimate to fix (and paid them their evaluation fee under protest), and arranged to take vehicle to dealer where the vehicle was purchased. they diagnosed the heater core needed to be replaced. problems persisted over the next months and the vehicle was returned 3 additional times. rust and/or jell in the system due to the dex-cool coolant was continually discussed as the root cause and the system had to be blown out several times yet the dealer nor the manufacturer would take any responsibility for the coolant problem. i pointed our that the system is labeled to not require any service/maintenance until 100,000 miles but they continued to not accept any responsibility. i requested copies of the manufacturers service bulletin on this problem to understand more of the specifics of the issue and to confirm that it was a known problem. recently (july 2001) i am continuing to have problems with gauges indicating a potential overheat condition which i suspect is a continuation of the blockage in the coolant system since i had the thermostat diagnosed as working.*ak

On 8/18/1999 i took my 1996 chevy blazer to superior chevrolet (merriam, ks 913-384-1550) because the engine cooling light kept coming on. as soon as i told the service representative about the problem he replied that this was a very common problem with 1996 blazers due to a defective coolant (dex-cool) that was used in the vehicle. they said that the fix was to flush the cooling system in accordance to gm service bulletin no. 99-06-02-012 (of which i have a copy). at this time they charged me $543.96 for the flush. as i investigated the incident more i found from several of the service personel at this dealership, as well as from the service manager (james ayres 913-789-4306) that the problem with the dex-cool coolant was very common with 1996 &1997 blazers. i then questioned why the consumer should pay for an inferior coolant that was used in these vehicles. as i pursued my complaint more, the service manager ended up contacting the area rep for chevy, who in turn ended up reimbursing me approx. $312. of my $543. at the time i figured that i better take what i could get, and that the problem was resolved.... well here i am 18 months later and 19,200 miles later and the coolant light came on again. once again i took the vehicle to superior chevrolet, and once again there is a problem with the cooling system due to the dex-cool coolant according to the service reps and service manager. this time though the service manager says that the entire cooling system (radiator, heater core, and water pump) all need replacement because the dex-cool has gelled up throughout the system. mr. ayres has told me that to repair this would cost $2100., but because we had the system flushed just 18 mo. ago, and because the problem with this dex-cool coolant is so common that he would only charge me $1300. i voiced my concern of why the consumer should pay for a problem that is commonly known at chevrolet. please contact me at the listed phone numbers. thanks. *ak

In jan 99, thermostat appeared to fail and when i opened the radiator cap, noticed what looked like mud/grit in cap. took the truck to the chevrolet dealer, they said they did not know what it was. ended up replacing intake manifold gasket, pulling and repairing/cleaning radiator and replacing thermostat. in july 2002, truck overheated again. took it to firestone where they recommended $1200 in repairs to flush out coagulated coolant (dexcool). ended up replacing radiator, radiator cap, and thermostat (again) and flushing entire coolant system. firestone personnel said this was a recurring problem on the blazers with the dexcool breaking down and turning into a brown, muddy, gummy substance. accoding to firestone, gm has several tech bulletins out on this, but they refuse to do anything about it. this dexcool broke down after only 30,000 miles. why has nothing been done about this? gm is knowingly selling a deficient product and they refuse to stand behind it. please, can someone out there help us!?!?!?!*ak

Coolant formed a clay in the radiator at 86,000 miles. according to chevrolet, the engine coolant does not require maintenance for 5 years or 100,000 miles if a silicate free orange coolant (meeting gm spec 6277m) is used. there is a notice on the engine that states this information. we have monitored the coolant level and have followed these instructions. in july, the engine overheated. we had the radiator flushed and were informed that the coolant had solidified in the radiator. the service technician informed us that the coolant had formed a clay in the radiator. shortly afterwards, the engine developed a sloshing/water noise. we had the radiator flushed again and were informed that we needed to have the radiator removed and manually cleaned. we took the vehicle to a trent, a gmc dealer (as the local chevrolet dealer would not repair the vehicle for 3 weeks) and were informed that the coolant system had been stopped up and clogged the heater core. according trent, the intake was clogged and leaking, which caused the entire radiator system to stop up. the radiator was plugged so badly that the flues could not be unstopped when the radiator was manually cleaned. the intake manifold gasket set, radiator, upper and lower radiator hoses, and thermostat had to be replaced. the heater core was flushed to remove the sludge. according to trent, all problems were caused by faulty coolant. the vehicle was within 5 years and 100,000 miles, and we followed chevrolets service instructions for maintenance.*ak

Dexcool in radiator cooling system had turned to a rusty sludge. had coolant flush done at 60,000 miles by the dealer. had dealer reinspect vehicle as i was going on a long road. i have copy of 27 point inspection stating my vehicle was in good condition with no noted problems. 261 miles later i was stranded in the desert with a plugged and blown radiator and heater core. the radiator cap was completely rusted. the fluid in the overflow tank was a rusty brown thick mess. the hoses going into the radiator had to be replaced due to a coating of rust on the inside. i had a new radiator put on, new hoses, and the radiator and engine block reflushed, new coolant added and overflow tank washed. 1,500 miles later (to the current mileage i am at now) the dexcool fluid is already discoloring and particles of rust are starting to reappear. which tells me the corrosion is deep inside the system. gm will not acknowledge a problem of rusting and corrosion, dealer will take no responsibility for their work or inspections. gm never warned the consumers that this had to be carefully watched or major engine damage would occur. gm has a training video that was sent to dealers that specifically deals with the dexcool corrosion problem. it is called gm training video understanding radiator cap and cooling system contamination. they are claiming the radiator caps may have a problem properly sealing the radiator thus causing high evaporation and thus contaminating the cooling system. if they are aware of this why was the consumer not informed? how can gm not take responsibility for the damage that is being done to a large amount on their vehicles. they also claim that the radiator design on certain types of their vehicles make them more prone to the corrosion contamination, such as the blazer, jimmy, st pickups, camaros. that is why not all gm products that were delivered originally with dexcool has had a problem.

I am writing to complain about the fact that my 1996 chevrolet blazer required major repairs to its radiator that has a sticker on it stating that there should be no maintenance for 100,000 miles. the dealer informed me that they recommend i replace the radiator, for additional money. this was noted on the receipt. i declined, due to the fact that the manufacturer notes that the radiator should be good for 100,00 miles. i then noticed a service bulletin number referenced on the receipt. i then researched this item to determine why this item was referenced. in my research i have found that chevrolet was aware of a problem with the coolant in the blazer radiator and issued a service bulletin to its dealers to inform them of what to do to correct the problem and also to recommend replacement. i am appalled that the manufacturer would be aware of such a major problem with the engine of one of its automobiles and not inform the consumer. and if they felt consumer information was not warranted, they could at least pay for repairs to those automobile that have problems with the radiator they discovered themselves, does not function correctly. i paid $ 661.00 approx. to repair my radiator and was pressured, and reminded on my receipt that i did not purchase a new one as recommended. i am infuriated that chevrolet did not repair my car free of charge. i am writing to complain and hopefully recoup some of the money i paid for the repairs. please let me know what the process is and if i have any recourse. i am writing to all of the consumer groups.*ak

08/23/2001104/01/2000
The belt tensioner on my '96 blazer started to fall apart. i caught it because the belt started squeeling loudly and i was able to reach the dealer before it completely fell off. if it had fallen off, the alternator, water pump, fan and power brakes would have failed immediately. i am writing because i personally know 3 other people who have had this same problem. my friend had this problem on a '96 chevrolet silverado. it was repaired under warranty at the time. my father has a '98 blazer and he just had the same problem. it is being fixed under warranty. my father's co-worker has a '98 blazer. he had to have the belt tensioner and serpentine belt replaced 3 times already. the first 2 times it was replaced under warranty. the third time the warranty was up but the dealer fixed it because of the on-going problem. it seems that the belt tensioner design could be defective. as i said at the beginning, this should be considered a safety problem. when the tensioner brakes, you instantly lose power to all engine accesories being turned by the serpintine belt.*ak

Consumer states the exhaust gas recirculation valve was damaged and the oxygen sensor are not working as they should.*yh

Both o2 sensors have been replaced (at seperate time in past 4 months). upper/lower ball joints are in need of replacement. according to dealership (desantis chevrolet) should have never passed inspection in april. have had problem with abs since purchase of the vehicle. first recall did nothing to fix problem. abs can't tell difference from wet & dry pavement. abs will kick in when slowing down on gravel at 20mph, but not at faster speeds on wet pavement.

Three of the fuel injectors started leaking at the same time causing the oxygen sensors to burn out, which should have been detected when the vehicle was in for drivability problems on previous occasions with no correction. all the front ball joints had to be replaced before 35000 miles due to failure, which resulted in severe noises and vibration in cab of vehicle.

 Oxygen sensor failed.
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - EXHAUST SYSTEM - EMISSION CONTROL - CATALYTIC CONVERTOR
07/26/1999112/01/1995
Car sputtered and lost power on two occasions. first time engine was replaced. second time distibutor was replaced. third diagnosis for the check engine soon light being on was that the cateletic converter is no good. dealer is replacing it. this dealer also indicates that both lower ball joints are worn out. must be replaced. this seems outrageous for a 3.5 yr old truck which has not been off-road. summary: new radiator system, new engine, new distributor, new cateletic convertor, and soon to have new ball joints -- all prior to 45000 miles. i fear this vehicle may be dangerous.
