Dt*: the contact stated that while driving at any speed, the vehicle transmission slipped. there was a flare-up between gears, and a harsh engagement between first and second gear. the vehicle was taken to a private repair shop, where it was determined that the on-board computer was inaccurate. there is a nhtsa technical service bulletin # 9774l60e08a, which pertains to the automatic transmission. the contact stated that the work was not performed upon sale of the vehicle.

The transmission failed with no warning. according to tsb 00-07-30-022 the 4l60e a/t will lose reverse, 2nd, and 4th gears. this is caused by a defective part in the transmission called the reaction sun shell, which was returned to me by the transmission rebuilder. the failure was not maintenance related in any way. the failure of the part was due to inadequate strength. there are numerous aftermarket reaction sun shells that are much stronger and durable than the defective gm part. this problem is widespread and could create a dangerous situation. the transmission will only shift from 1st to 3rd if you accelerate quickly in 1st then let off the accelerator. i pulled on to a high speed highway and could only maintain 25 mph with no place to pull over, until i realized that it would shift to 3rd if you let off the accelerator. several vehicles had to swerve to avoid hitting mine. this can create a dangerous situation if someone tries to turn around and needs reverse or needs to drive at high speed such as on a limited access highway. gm should recall all vehicles that the tsb applies to. they know about the situation but do not want to issue a recall because it would cost them too much money. *jb

Consumer received several recalls for 1996 chevrolet s10 blazer. *mr the vehicle's heating/cooling system and transmission failed prematurely. during a routine check the consumer noticed that the dex cool coolant had turned into a reddish clay-like substance. given the condition of the coolant the consumer proceeded to flush the system. after the system was flushed both the radiator and heater core began to leak. the transmission also failed and as a result only first gear and reverse were operational. the dealer replaced the transmission with a rebuilt one and replaced the vcm. *nm

Just brought 96 blazerls with 82,000 in dec.02. was told that the only problem was they had to have the transmission replaced at 20,000. well,83,000 miles the heater was on hot blowing when i noticed that it turn cold and the gage went to the red zone. i immediately turn swiches off on the blower it went back to normal. two days later it happen again but i turn off the heater and blower completely it went back to normal. we thought the termostact got stuck and replaced it . at that time we notice that it was gel up over the termostact, after replacing it , we tested drove it and it still did the same thing again. we looked at the radiator and found that it was gel up and look like rubber. we then decided to check the fluid in the transmission we noticed that the dipped stick was rusted on the outside and was rusted the length of the stick the fluid was rusted. we will now have to flushed the radiator and transmission. i had checked your site and found no recalls or service bulletins on the geling and transmissions before buying. tell today when i decided to checked out complaints and found that there was 54 and couple with the same problems of geling and transmission problems. so i decided to check out 98 because my sisterinlaw had just brought one and no recalls or service bulletins but they are compalints of cool heating (probably from geling anitifreeze) and transmissions being replaced once ,twice and i guy 3 times. so i check 2001 and they was someone else replacing a transmission. something is very wrong when there is geling of antifreeze from 96 to 98 and replacing transmissions left and right since 96. to me chevrolet has a bad transmission problems and geling problems in these blazers getting away with it. from now on i'll check out complaints before recalls or service bulletins there's the consumers eyes and ears.

Had to have transmission repaired twice within a year of owning 96 blazer. first repair was done by denooyer chevrolet, just about a year later the transmission went again, with no help from chevrolet i had transmission repaired at buff o matic in glenmont, ny (with no problems thereafter). then had to have practically entire cooling system cleaned and repaired by depaula chevrolet due to dex-cool anti-freeze crystallizing within engine, again with no help from chevrolet i had to dish out money for repair. gm and chevrolet should be resposible for both my repairs. i am currently working with the bbb, attorney general and a personal attorney to hopefully recoupe damages.*ak

I work at night driving and often have to break fast for deer crossing the highways. the first time i had to break quickly for 2 deer the vehicle gave a growling sound and just continued at the same speed until i had hit the deer. the last time this happened was today and luckily i was able to swerve around the deer without losing control. i complained of the transmission in march , 2000 and was told there is nothing wrong with it. at that time i had them change the transmission fluid, filter and gasket, but it still has times when it doesn't want to go.

We have experienced transmission problems starting in 12/98. at this time, our truck was still under warranty, and we mentioned that the transmission was slipping when our truck was serviced at wilton motors. the mechanics insisted it was fine. in fact, we are not even sure if they checked since our service invoice indicates that checking the transmission was a deleted operation. on 2/25/00, the transmission failed while driving on the highway. it was constantly slipping and could not handle highway speeds (the truck was having trouble shifting gears and made a grinding noise). we brought the truck into an independent specialist on 3/2/00. the entire transmission needed to be rebuilt and several bands were replaced. the entire repair cost $1,800. we were not satisfied with the service at the gm dealership, and were concerned that they would now find a problem with the transmission and charge an even higher amount than an independent specialist. at this point, our truck was no longer under warranty. however, we felt the problem had developed while the truck was still covered under warranty, and the gm mechanics failed to find the problem. we have filed a complaint with general motors on 4/12, a complaint with the better business bureau on 6/12, and are now filing a complaint with nhtsa. we have spoken with other owners of 1995 and 1996 blazers, and many have complained of transmission problems. we are hoping that gm realizes there is a problem with this part and will investigate other complaints on the transmission. we have already had 5 recalls for our 1996 blazer, and we are hoping there will be a recall for the transmission. *ak

I have had two major problems with this vehicle since it's purchase date. the transmission has experienced two major failures and the dealer said he replaced them both times. i have continued to experience shifting problems and occassional lockup of the transmission when shifting from park to drive. the transmission dip stick and filler tube have had to be replaced twice for rust which leads me to believe that engine cooolant is getting into the transmission fluid. the second problem is naturally the abs brake system. this is the sorriest excuse for brakes on a vehicle that i have seen. i must almost stand on the brake pedal with excessive pressure to get the vehicle to stop. i also experienced premature brake pad wear out on the front which damage the rotors. chevrolet refused to fix this under warranty even though the vehicle only had 20,000 miles on it. the abs system locks up sometimes when i push hard on the brakes. i have experienced several near accidents because of the poor braking system on this vehicle. i would appreciate any help you could be to leverage chevrolet to correct these problems.

When in 4- wheel drive mode, i turned into a drive to change direction of travel. as i backed out of the drive, the engine bogged down ands almost stalled. as i fed more gas, the engine still labored and i could feel a binding in the drive train and the steering. not until the wheel was straightened was i able to feel the normal response and power of the vehicle. during this period of binding, it is extremely hard to steer and move the vehicle. the dealer analysis is that this is normal. it happens on dry, wet, snow and ice conditions. it should also be noted that the wheels are not on the stops when this occurs. *ak

1&2) lower left ball joint and idler arm have been replaced, lower right ball joint is showing signs of wear and will require replacement in the near future. 3) 4x4 electric shift just failed last week. preliminary troubleshooting indicates a #2 failure code which point to either the encoder/shift motor assembly or the transfer case control module (tccm). 4) this is a continuing problem. whenever the gas gauge indicates 1/8 tank or less and the vehicle stands for more than 2 hours it is difficult to start. it takes 4-5 tries and requires that the gas pedal be pressed about 1/2 travel in order to start. when taken to the dealer for repair with a nearly empty gas tank, dealer claimed that they could not duplicate the problem. yet, the day before the hard starting problem occured at least 6 times. *ak

I chose a chevy blazer because i know that chevy is known for the quality of their trucks. unfortunately i couldn't be any more disappointed with my purchase and also with my dealer. ever since i owned my 1996 chevy blazer i've had problems with it and the dealership has continued to take advantage as me as a customer. i can't believe how unprofessional a dealership can be and also how a new vehicle can be so unreliable. the 4th day i had this truck 4 -wheel drive went out, i took it to william chevrolet and they took 2 weeks to fix it, not only that, but they told me to rent a car knowing that i was under 25, instead of lending me a replacement car. in last 3 years the brakes have gone out on me 8 times, and the dealership wouldn't once cover it. my wiper motor went out just before the wiper piece recall went out, i paid for them to fix it, and give me a new motor. but then, when i went to the dealership with the recall they wouldn't reimburse me for the motor just the piece. i don't understand if that piece caused my wiper motor to go out that why do i have to pay for it? my heater is now not working to it's fullest and it's the middle of winter. we just got 21 inches of snow and my 4 wheel drive is not working again. i was unaware that my 4 wheel drive was not working 2 days ago, i turned onto indianapolis blvd, and my blazer did a 360 in the middle of a busy intersection, almost causing a 4 car accident. after that i checked to see if my front wheel were moving, and ofcourse they weren't, therefore i only have rear wheel drive on a $25,000 4x4. the last 2 days have been hell, first i could not get my truck out of its parking spot after i'd shoveled for an hour, after i finally got it out, it got stuck in the snow about 7 times, while 1989 escorts are driving around effortlessly. it's so ridiculous, i have to be afraid to take my truck around the block because it gets stuck in an inch of snow. i'm sitting here now because my vehicle can't get me to work.

This is my first chevrolet blazer, i have a ford ranger that has 210,000 miles with no problems, however, this blazer has spider gears that are out at less than 45,000 miles on it. so i'm hoping that there is a assembly flaw or manufacturing discrepency involved to correct this matter. i know that there are some problems with the chevy and gmc full size trucks, i have a couple of friends that have gone through a few rear ends already. it was found that there was a discrepency in the machining of the axle. i'm hoping that this is a related incident and that other people are having this same problem? i don't hardly ever use 4wd and i'm not hard on my vehicles, so i just don't understand why these spider gears would be going out on a 2 year old vehicle.
