Abs wire caught fire on my 1997 chevy blazer after turning it off. and caught antifreeze resevoir on fire. luckly i could catch it before it burned the truck up. called dealer and they said that there was no recall on the problem.

After only 70,000 miles i had to get a new engine. it also never wanted to start when it was cold and wet out. then just yesterday i was driving down the road when smoke started to come in through the heat vents. the electric wires caught fire under the hood on passenger side of car near firewall. went up in a matter of seconds. destroyed the car.

Power accessory circuit breaker becomes hot, and then power seats, door locks, mirrors and keyless entry do not work. this existed when i purchased the vehicle in april 2008. i tried replacing the circuit breaker. also, the power mirror on the passenger side was damaged and was removed, so this may not be the same issue as the recall on the mirrors = to install fused jumper harness.) *tr

Engine shuts down intermittently for a few seconds without warning. this happened for several months at all speeds, any road conditions. the engine service light does not come on when it happens, making the cause difficult to identify. this is very scary and/or dangerous when accelerating onto a freeway, crossing an intersection or a set of r tracks. almost had accidents several times. the cause was not identifiable until other symptoms also happened. the cause was eventually identified as burned contacts in the key switch. replacing the key switch solved the problem. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 1997 chevrolet blazer. the contact stated that the engine failed on three different occasions. after waiting 5-10 minutes, the vehicle restarted. the failure has occurred while making a turn, driving downhill at approximately 15 mph, and another time while driving approximately 55 mph. after the most recent failure, the vehicle was taken to a repair shop the next day. the mecahnic was unable to duplicate the failure and advised the contact to wait until it occurs again. the vehicle has been driven for almost a month and the failure has not recurred. the failures were intermittent and no warning indicators were present. once the failure occurred, the key could not be turned or removed from the ignition and everything failed. the current and failure mileages were 60,000. updated 01/11/08. *lj updated *jb

Owning this vehicle has been a nightmare and a financial drain. windshield wipers worked when they chose, replaced wiper motor due to defective part. upper and lower ball joints all had to be replaced. wheel bearings had to be replaced. a/c stopped working, had it looked at and recharged and it still doesn't work. fuel gage didn't work, replaced fuel sensor and sending unit. rear wiper quit working, replaced rear wiper motor, a few days later it does not work again. replaced water pump, have replaced abs only to get a recall after the fact with no reimbursement. wears through brake pads entirely too fast. replaced alternator and battery twice. rear hatch does not unlock with key. headlights are so dim they might as well not exist. water leaks into interior on drivers side due to a bad seal. idler arm needs to be replaced. gas pedal sticks. now heater fan works sometimes. reading through the complaints we are all experiencing the same problems and nothing is being done about it. recalls issued on some vehicles but not all? now i hear gm put a bad intake manifold gasket on these as well as several other cars (1997) and did not issue a recall because it is not a safety matter! this causes antifreeze to leak into the engine and ultimately ends in a repair of at least 1500.00. after my experience with this vehicle i will be purchasing soon and it most likely will not be gm. sad since my dad worked for them for 30 years. they should be held accountable for putting a bad product on the market and leaving us to dry. *nm

I have a 97 blazer 4x4 with a little over 113k miles. i've been having problems with the voltage (i think) for a while now. the voltage meter swings from just above 9v to over 14v when i stop at a traffic light. i'm convinced the gauge is not to blame because when i put a load on it, it indicates 9v to 10.5v, the dash lights dim, the headlights wil also dim. i've already replaced (3) altenators and the battery twice which in 4 months and everything is still the same. the gauge will read just above 14v when i'm am driving the truck with no problem but the minute i stop at a traffic light the voltage gauge drops down to 9v or 10.5v depending on what accessories am runnning on my truck. temperature and frequency between trips seems to not make a difference either. the only thing i have done to the truck even remotely connected to the electrical system is to swap the radio, but i used a wire harness to connect the wiring. i've checked and will recheck tonight for loose wires or bad grounds, but other than that i'm lost. any help? *nm

When using windshield wipers, wipers work at random stopping in middle of window interrupting view. when turning key on, dash lights refuse to light up and vehicle will not start; although radio still works. it will eventually start;when ready! sometimes shortly after first trying, sometimes 30-45 minutes later. brakes must be pressed completely to floor before decelleration begins. when going over jspeed bumps, sounds like loud dragging noise coming from underneath of vehicle. back seat passenger side power window does not work, will function using driver side controls. gas guage does not work properly, causing to run out of gas occasionally. while driving at minimal(55mph) speed, vehicle will die but will sometimes start itself back up, sometimes it must be put in neutral & restarted.*ak

My 1997 blazer dies when i am driving it. i can drive it for 2 weeks with no problems and then it will die several times in one day. it doesn't matter how fast i am going...i can be going 50 mph or coming to a stop when it dies. the steering and brakes go out and i'm afraid i am going to have an accident. i took it to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong with it and of course it didn't cut off when the mechanic drove it. i have also had to replace the alternator, battery, thermostat, and water pump within the last 6 months. *la

I own a 1997 chevrolet blazer ls that has had repeated electrical problems including stalling while driving. the car stalls, though the headlights, radio, heater/air conditioner continue to work. the steering wheel locks, and i have to stop the car completely, put it in park, and try to restart the engine. sometimes it starts right away, sometimes not. i'm afraid this will happen in heavy traffic and will cause an accident. although it's been checked at least seven times, the dealer can't locate the problem. it happened to me three times today, so tomorrow morning it will be back at the dealer. i'm listing the most recent date (12/22/03) as the incident date below, though it's happened many times (i'm guessing at least 12).*ak

Primary: electrical failures! ignition switch; multiple electrical failures with interior lights for which no one can figure out what is happening; check engine light has come on since i purchased the vehicle even after dealer worked on it; vehicle stalling out while driving almost caused accident; alternator replacement; multiple batteries -drain for unidentified reason; fuel injection system and pump; unexplained noises in the front end; front ball joints loose for which the dealership would not replace when i bought the vehicle because they said it was within factory limits even though my mechanic said that they were not; at this point i have become afraid to drive the vehicle due to the electrical problems and stalling but feel that i have no choice because the costs to maintain the vehicle is that of the payments and sometimes more and i cannot afford the required money down to replace it. bottom line -i am getting rid of it as soon as i can since i have spoken to other owners who have had similar recurrent problems. i need a reliable vehicle. this is not one and from what i have seen and dealt with -1997 chevy blazers are not. the rule out there is you either have a good one or a bad one and i cannot afford on many fronts the one i have. at least chevy should own up to the electrical problems particularly since it is tied to a moving vehicle stalling out and putting peoples lives at risk. i will not own another chevy once i can get rid of this one. the incident date refers to the period starting with the electrical equipment failures. *la

There is a bad design in the bundle of wiring above transmission with plastic ring holding bundle, this bundle is not attached to anything allowing move rub till they short out in the chevrolet blazers, mine is a 1997. my blazer wiring caused my transmission switch to short out and i was first told i needed a new transmission so i took it for second opinion, the second shop cut the wire from the bundle, rerouted it from transmission switch and the transmission switch worked. other wires in the same bundle caused shorts through out all wiring causing a constant draw of electric and running battery down. when a fuse is removed it breaks the circuit and battery does not run down. the shorted wiring caused day lights to not work, interior lights to stay on unless i pulled the fuse and numerous other electrical problems. this is the second time i have had it in the shop for the same thing. they are now dropping the transmission to get to the bundle of wires to fix shorts and i am taking pictures of all of this. the shop had two other blazers in at the same time for the same problem. i will also take pictures of those blazers, one of the blazers is the shop owners wife. the shops are telling me it should be a recall. i plan to report this to as many agencies as possible and interview as many shops as possible about this problem, i believe it is a fire hazard since it shorts out. the wiring bundle is also connected to the fuel pump at the gas tank. i hope chevrolet will act soon and take responsibility for this problem. there should be a recall on this. i have also had it in nix chevrolet where i bought it and the ac did not work, they have worked on the ac 8 times and totally rebuilt everything and i still do not have ac???? they said they will look at it again. i also have numerous recalls i will have to have fixed. i have had so much trouble with this vehicle since i bought it, it's been in the shop more than i have got to drive it. i will never buy chevrolet again.*ak

The windshield wipers came loose twice going down the highway. the front rotors had to be repaired and brake pads replaced. this problem caused severe steering difficulty. ( the mechanic told me this is a common problem in all blazers and he'll see me again in about 15-25k miles)tires had to be replaced early because they wear fast on the front. replaced ball joint recently. vehicle makes excessive noises in front end( including engine compartment) for age. vehicle has had electrical problems since purchace to include ignition replacement, fuel pump and sensors replaced, fuel guage going wacky, lights always seem dim( i have a hard time seeing at night when driving this particular vehicle), vehicle would not start on too many occasions to list and towed once while on a trip for this problem. vehicle had to be jump started on several occasions, battery seems to drain fo no apparent reason. seats and belts have been repaired about 4 times. i only detail listed items which i know the exact dates. which happened. vehicle is at the dealer right now for electrical and they are saying there is no problem. my wife and i are currently trying to work with gm on these issues, but haven't received much help. i am very dissapointed with the gm service and the dealers. i have always been a chevy person, but i don't beleive i want to own another problem. i have heard many people complain about similar problems with their 199x blazer. the two dealers which have worked on this vehicle the most try to tell my wife these problems are normal. no vehicle of this age should have this many problems. i had a 20 year old chevy truck before this blazer and didn't have nearly the problems. sorry, had to vent a little. *ak

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM - ALTERNATOR/GENERATOR/REGULATOR

I purchase my 97 blazer in dec 2000 with 35000 miles from a local dealer, i believe it was a previous lease vehicle. within one year i had to replace ball joints but was told that i did not qualify for a recall. in feb of 2003 i lost my heat and spent close to 2000 dollars replacing first the water pump, then the radiator. after that didn't solve the problem, the dealership told me that the system needed to be flushed with a special machine that would cost another 400 dollars. the system had to be flushed twice to get marginal heat. according to the dealership, the next move is to replace the heater core. now the wipers stop working and only restart by flipping the switch back and forth. not real good on the highway in rush hour traffic. i recently had the alternator replaced and the dealership stated that the serpentine belt was old and cracked and needed to be replaced. it actually had less than 5000 miles on it as they replaced it in february when the water pump was done, there was nothing wrong with it. the combination of lousy service from 2 different dealerships, a vehicle that has had nothing but ongoing problems will be enough to stop me from buying another gm product again. *nlm

The transmission in my vehicle has a defective valve body and it caused my transmission to break, i went to the dealer when i first had the problem of a hard shift from first to second gear when the vehicle was being driven long distances. the dealer said the vehicle is shifting fine and to bring it back when it does it again. this was back on 08/19/02 and now i have a code 1870 on the computer and the transmission is shot. i found out the transmission is a 4l60e and it is very unreliable. also i already had to change my water pump and alternator and my gas gauge does not work and there is a problem with my windshield wipers also. *jb

This vehicle has had numerous problems. from bad dexcool, witch caused a major overhaul of the cooling system at approx. 37000 or 3 1/2 yr. yet chevrolet states the coolant is good for 5yr or 150,000. the front ball joints had to be replaced at approx. 35,000. just over the 3yr warranty with no help from chevy despite numerous complaints of this failure. also have had two batteries in the system one after only 3000 miles and the second one is now out at 38000 miles. there is a short in the system that still has not been found. the shift lever handle has been a changed 3 times and still rattle after approx. a month of use. the front drivers side mirror shakes to the point it is hard to see out of when driving. the hood rattles when going over bumps, which can be fixed by adding a solid rubber gasket at the top of hood to keep the hinge stops from bouncing on the frame. the front brakes had to be redone at 28,000. *ak

My 1977 blazer would not turn over this morning. a check of the battery (original) indicated that the battery acid was leaking from the battery and has corroded the battery holder, the car frame and the brake line. i understand that there has been a recall of other vehicles for leaking battery problems. i believe the problem batteries are also in the 1977 chevrolet blazer. i am concerned about the damage that may have been caused to the front brake line. i replaced the battery today... and have kept the old one in case the nhtsa wants to see it.*ak

Driver's side rear view mirror switch wiring caught on fire. my husband had to tear the door panel up to keep my blazer from burning up. gm refuses to fix this under the recall because my vin number does not fall in the sequence of those that were recalled for this defect. my interior dome light caught on fire as well. my husband had to pull off the cover and break the bulb out of the housing to keep the blazer from burning. dealer will probably refuse to fix this as well. *tr

Back in 8/04 took car to dealer because blazer wouldn't start all the time,no idiot lights, just crank. dealer installed starter relay switch and advise to get new key, not real fix, maybe ignition switch needs to be replace, maybe key will help. problems continues immediately, try new key, problems the same but in 11/05 it is happening more frequent then on 12/02/05 won't start at all. tow to dealer, tells me i need new ignition switch, tell ok do it. next day i go to pick up and car not ready, different problem, we found wiring harness melted. wiring harness is for wipers and ignition. back in 02/04 had wiper board replace because of short. board was replaced because i got a letter from general motors stating bad wiper board, safety issue, replace for free. so dealer has charged me for a starter relay and wiring harness when i think it might have been wiper board issue that gm admits to. dealer has charged over $600.00 and i don't know if car will burn in future. *nm

Wiring bundle holder above transmission one of which goes to the transmission switch fails and lets wiring bundle fall on transmission and rubs the coating off of the wiring causing electical shorts; daylight headlights, transmission failure ( nothing wrong with transmission)interior lighting goes out or stays on all the time causing battery to go dead overnight, burning of wiring especially under dash and at fuse box and transmission switch (no fire resulted, unhooked battery removed fuses, and had wire replaced to transmission switch then trasmission worked; no failure of swicth just wiring, wiper and night light failures and more. transmission auto repair says it is number 1 failure and happens all the time. the dealer said i needed a new transmission. this is a 1997 chevrolet blazer. i still have electral problems i have to get fixed. some recalls were made on this auto that may be due to this shortage caused by wiring bundle falling above the transmission.

Engine check light problem is an ongoing issue with both current and former owner. 3 different mechanics put ther scanners on the vehicle and keep bringing up the oxygen sensor as the problem. had one bad sensor at the wiring harness plug which was poorly assembled at the factor causing water to get to the contacts and contaminated the connector. replaced all 4 o2 sensors and still cannot get the check engine light to go away. vehicle performs perfect along with 24 mpg gas one highway driving. this is an issues other blazer owners are experiencing. gm should be held accountable to fix this issue.*ak

*ak
