The 1997 and 1998 blazer has an inherent defect in the valve body in transmission. code 1870 found after vehicle is warm the transmission slams into second gear causing the rear wheels to loose traction. i was told the transmission most likely needs a valve body. the chevrolet dealer and a very reputable transmission repair shop advised that the 1997 and 1998 blazers are notorious for this inherent defect, and they have replaced the defective valve body with a larger one which fixes the problem. the dealer advised that there hasn't been a recall probably because no one has complained about the problem.

The consumer experienced multiple problems with the vehicle. the wiper motor failed and was recalled. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs but they didn't have the parts available. the radio would go off and on, the overhead display and map lights would go off and on, the cd player no longer worked, the rear window latch failed, the mirrors would only move to the left and there was rust in the transmission. *la *nm

Transmission slips from 2-wheel drive into 4-wheel drive. took to car dealer at 31k+ miles. told dip stick rusted. transmission slipped on 3 occasions previously from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive at speeds between 45 -55 mph. at dealer now with just over 52k miles and told transmission will probably be replaced, estimated cost $1800. believe this occurs more frequently than reported and unsuspecting owner are shelling out excessive money for faulty transmissions.

Had to replace transmission at 140,000 miles. servicing per the owner's manual was always done, including dealers recommendations for transmission flush. transmission suddenly failed to shift to 1st gear, then failed to shift to reverse shortly after that. 3rd party repair shop stated transmission was beyond economical repair, so replaced with 3rd party transmission to the tune of $2800. *tr

Transmission has shifted hard from 1st to 2nd since i bought the vehicle used 10/7/03 also get intermittent check engine light used car dealer coded out to trans component slippage but didn't know what to do on 01/16/04 was on extended trip and transmission failed completely - rpms started to climb so pulled over to shoulder of road - kept slipping gears - finally lost all forward motion. on stopping and checking found dip stick showed no fluid but had rust and grit on the end fluid appeared to have been leaking out of the top of the tube and there was trans fluid all over the bottom of the vehicle had the vehicle towed back to used car dealer he put in 8 qts of fluid to get it to move his mechanic said it appeared that the fluid boiled out of the dip stick tube but didn't know why in checking the internet it appears that these symptoms are common but unsupported by chevy on this model year of blazer. *la

There is a bad design in the bundle of wiring above transmission with plastic ring holding bundle, this bundle is not attached to anything allowing move rub till they short out in the chevrolet blazers, mine is a 1997. my blazer wiring caused my transmission switch to short out and i was first told i needed a new transmission so i took it for second opinion, the second shop cut the wire from the bundle, rerouted it from transmission switch and the transmission switch worked. other wires in the same bundle caused shorts through out all wiring causing a constant draw of electric and running battery down. when a fuse is removed it breaks the circuit and battery does not run down. the shorted wiring caused day lights to not work, interior lights to stay on unless i pulled the fuse and numerous other electrical problems. this is the second time i have had it in the shop for the same thing. they are now dropping the transmission to get to the bundle of wires to fix shorts and i am taking pictures of all of this. the shop had two other blazers in at the same time for the same problem. i will also take pictures of those blazers, one of the blazers is the shop owners wife. the shops are telling me it should be a recall. i plan to report this to as many agencies as possible and interview as many shops as possible about this problem, i believe it is a fire hazard since it shorts out. the wiring bundle is also connected to the fuel pump at the gas tank. i hope chevrolet will act soon and take responsibility for this problem. there should be a recall on this. i have also had it in nix chevrolet where i bought it and the ac did not work, they have worked on the ac 8 times and totally rebuilt everything and i still do not have ac???? they said they will look at it again. i also have numerous recalls i will have to have fixed. i have had so much trouble with this vehicle since i bought it, it's been in the shop more than i have got to drive it. i will never buy chevrolet again.*ak

The transmission in my vehicle has a defective valve body and it caused my transmission to break, i went to the dealer when i first had the problem of a hard shift from first to second gear when the vehicle was being driven long distances. the dealer said the vehicle is shifting fine and to bring it back when it does it again. this was back on 08/19/02 and now i have a code 1870 on the computer and the transmission is shot. i found out the transmission is a 4l60e and it is very unreliable. also i already had to change my water pump and alternator and my gas gauge does not work and there is a problem with my windshield wipers also. *jb

This truck was always serviced at the dealer where it was purchased. any scheduled maintenance was done including the transmission. on the 60,000 service the service manager suggested a flush type of transmission service & i said to proceed. the very next day the vehicle was picked up & immediately showed symptoms of shifting at different speeds than it had before the service. after some calls to the service department the vehicle was brought back so they could diagnose the problem. no definitive answer could be given but the service manager stated, they, the dealership, would accept no responsibility for the problem. i guess they never heard of cause & effect. needless to say i removed the vehicle from their possession immediately. a third party repair facility had determined the transmission had self destructed to the point of major damage. subsequently i spoke with other shops only to find the method of flushing was a bad idea most likely did cause the failure. so much for an authorized dealer & manufacturer standing behind their work. this cost me to the tune of $2,000.

My '1997 chevrolet blazer lost its control after failing its right front upper ball joint of knuckle assembly. right front tire was off the ground and the rh frt knuckle scrubbed the inside of tire rim. the chevrolet dealer inform me to replace the upper ball joint as a recall item. and they charge me for all the other damaged parts. second problem: the gear shifting lever did not go to the right position on the prindle during my driving. i asked the chevy dealer to fix it. they open the instrument panel and they told me they fixed it. the same day, my transmission was engaged into different gears against my intention during drving condition. the transmission began to make a kicking sound on the road besides shifting into any gearas and making serious metallic noise on the free way. the chevy dealer recommended me my vehicle needed a new transmission and i had to pay for it after paying for instrument panel fix, replacement of torque converter and towing from tennessee to detroit.*ak

Transmission started failing at 25,000 in august 2001 on a 1997 blazer. !st repair found transmission cooler clogged with blue plastic, mechanic thinks it was part of a plastic cap to cver ends of cooler assy before it was installed at the factory cost to replace cooler and service transmission $290 2 weeks later transmission problems came back - hits gears hard and when making right or left turn with out stopping and applying gas after turn transmission was slipping. transmission shop torn down transmission foun rusty dip stick, alot of burn marks on various parts, screens clogged with dist substance, metal grindings in pan, valve assy rusty, replaced converter total cost $1717 drove vehicle 1 day problems started again (slipping) mechanic at his cost changed converter and checked his work found everything ok -results still slipping. mechanic told me at my cost i need to replace the pump in the transmission said this is unusual to have to replace. told me new punp for this vehicle was quoted to him at $800. i was so sick over this, stressed ouyt and could not sleep for nights decided to chance it at get a used xmission from junkjard and take the pump out $400. mechanic did not charge me labor to put the pump in total bill = $2407 the transmission mechanic said in all the 25+ yrs rebuilding transmissions he never experenced any thing like this. this is a crime for gm to not do anything about these failures knowing so many people are having simulr problems in the blazers.*ak

When i bought the truck, it had a 3,000mile 30 day warranty on it, 60000miles. 1st occurrence with engine light and dipstick corrosion was within that time. down time for the truck one week. the next month, i was enroute and the light triggered again. took truck to local chevy dealer who had looked at dipstick before replacement, stated same dipstick. at this point i called chevrolet company who told me the $1800 damage bill caused by the defective dipstick and subsequent transmission damage would be mine to cover.all because it was under warranty and should have been fixed the first time.*ak

When first experienced we were coming home from hershey on a hot day when we came to a traffic light. when we proceeded the transmission shifted real hard into second gear causing us to jerk back as the truck jerked forward. this problem continued everytime we would come to a complete stop. we were able to make it to our mechanic and drop the blazer of. the next day when the mechanic looked at the vehicle he could not detect any malfuctions. approx. one week later we drove to new jersey, the truck was fine until we came to our first traffic light in ocean city nj when the problem started again but this time the check engine light came on. when leaving nj the problem started when we had to stop at our first toll, this time i pulled over let the blazer rest for a while, then started back home and it was ok for awhile but then started acting up again so i pulled over and turned the truck of for about a minute and it was ok for a while again. i noticed that everytime it acted up and i pulled over that i just had to turn the vehicle off and turn it right back on and it would be ok for a while. when returning home our mechanic could now scan the service engine light and reported gear slippage. he talked to a transmission specialists who said this seems to happen on long hot trips, who suggested that this problem can last for years before the transmission would need to be replaced. contacting aw golden they said they could not help us because the warranty had expired at 36000 miles and we had 41196miles. contacting gm they said the same but if we would trade it in they would give us a 2000 dollar loyalty. we declined because we like the blazer and would have liked them to give that money to fix the problem. contacting bbbautoline they said they couldn't help us. we just came from phila. and the problem occured again to and from. checking the internet we noticed several problems with gm transmissions and decided to contact nhtsa.*ak

After vehicle runs for 30 minutes, transmission jerks when shifting from 1st to 2nd. i was told that the valve body needed replacement, and the valve was sticking. it will cost $1000. gmc customer service department said there is nothing they can do to help me. it is apparent that the 97 blazer's had serious problems with both the brakes and the transmission but don't want to do anything about it. all they want to do is replace my valve body with a newer updated version now that the bugs have been worked out but at my cost. there is no reason that a transmission on any car should have problems at this mileage. to top it off, most of my mileage is highway. i also put my 4th set of brakes on at 41,000 miles. dealer said 1st set were defective at 18k, 2nd set was only a 10k brake at 29k. problem was never fixed and i gave up. *ak

While driving at 55 mph the transmission went out, the gear was stuck in 3rd gear, and the gears were shifting very hard. consumer took the vehicle in for service, and the dealer test drove the vehicle and couldn't determine. dealer replaced the transmission tube, and engine valve body. also, the accelerator slips. *ak

Wiring bundle holder above transmission one of which goes to the transmission switch fails and lets wiring bundle fall on transmission and rubs the coating off of the wiring causing electical shorts; daylight headlights, transmission failure ( nothing wrong with transmission)interior lighting goes out or stays on all the time causing battery to go dead overnight, burning of wiring especially under dash and at fuse box and transmission switch (no fire resulted, unhooked battery removed fuses, and had wire replaced to transmission switch then trasmission worked; no failure of swicth just wiring, wiper and night light failures and more. transmission auto repair says it is number 1 failure and happens all the time. the dealer said i needed a new transmission. this is a 1997 chevrolet blazer. i still have electral problems i have to get fixed. some recalls were made on this auto that may be due to this shortage caused by wiring bundle falling above the transmission.
04/01/2003212/11/2001

Luddy chevrolet denies that problems with transfer case and transmission are engineering defects. transmission fluid smelled burned, and also constantly slipped. transfer case made a noise when in motion, was a bent shaft and worn bearing. both of these problems should not be happening to a highway driven vehicle with 61500 miles.

Transmission failed in driveway when placed vehicle in reverse it bucked forward causing my son to be pinned against the garage injuring his right leg and foot, the vehicle would not go into reverse and engaged in 4wd by itself. my son could have been killed. i have had several problems with this vehichle since i purchased it with the transmission and transfer box failure. currently in the repair shop estimated at $1200. plus to repair this time. transfer box cost out of pocket expense in excess of $800. i was not surprised to see so many complaints about the same probelm with this year make and model vehicle. the repair shop tech told me he has replaced many transmissions in this vehicle and is surprised there has not yet been a recall.i am a widower living on a fixed income and these unexpected and unnecessary expenses have hurt. i expect the incidentals with keeping up my vehicle, i have my vehicle taken in for regular maintenence but this goes far beyond regular wear and tear. gmc should make good on the problem because it is obviously, based on the number of customer complaints, a manufacturer defect. please advise as to further steps to take to hopefully resolve this matter. gmc has to be shown that consumers dont have to be victims. *ak

While pulling into a parking space at approx. 5mph the front axle and upper ball joint snapped, causing additional damage to the abs sensor, sliced the rim among other things. tires were wearing in a odd position down to the belts, obviously due to problems in the front end. dealership is repairing now. all under warranty, except the rim since it is a nonmechanical part even though mechanical defects caused the damage. luckily this happened in a parking space and not 50ft. sooner on the 4 lane highway i was on with my 8 yr old daughter. the wheel was half on leaning into the truck. had it happened sooner there would have been an accident involving numerous people. the rear windshield wiper is intermittent and only works when it wants, causing distractions in vision while driving. sometimes the wiper will not go down for up to 30min.that is also being repaired now. contacted gm and they claim there have been no previous complaints of this matter with the axle or ball joints breaking. *ak

On three separate occasions the brake pedal went to the floor. the brakes are in good shape and the fluid level is fine. the brake pedal always feels spongy and its hard to stop the vehicle. the other complaint deals with the rear end. after the car has be en driven for about fifteen minutes the rear end will vibrate and make a grinding noise when the car takes off from a stop light or stop sign. i am the second owner of the car and it had 17000 miles on it when i bought it.

Transmission fluid would overflow and spray on back window. on 8/7-11 gm paid 80% i had to pay 20%-since i was over by 2,000 miles. exact same thing happened on 8/14, they had my blazer for almost 3 wks at no cost to me. they said they rebuilt the transmission. same thing happened on 9/2/00 but now it has no reverse, made loud noise, they towed it-i would not drive it back this time. i was getting off the pike, applied brakes and the transmission down shifted and i went flying forward..thank go no other cars around and i was wearing my seat belt. the first repair i was without my blazer for about a week, 2nd repair it was almost 3 weeks..have no idea how long this one will take. prior to this i loved my blazer. i don't feel at 38,000 you should have transmission problems. i did inform the service dept. when i first bought the blazer it had a rusted dip stick and they replaced it. i think that is all they did, feel they should have drained the fluid, just in case rust chips or corosion fell into the fluid. they also put new brakes on 2 months ago and i keep telling them they aren't working properly. the abs brakes you press pedal and it goes almost to the flow, there is no way they would stop in an emergency on time. based on this i am not pleased with the gm parts and the service deptartment!!!!!

Vehicle has 92k miles, but its 99% highway miles. the tranission failed as well as the sensor module, gas gauge failed, water pump failed, cracks in the exhaust system, windshield fluid leaked into the vehicle when rear washer was activated, bad battery which was never replaced (trying to sell me a new one all the time), constant resurfacing of front rotors due to unevean wear and a defective gas gasket to the evaporative system. i can supply exact mileage and dates of repair. if i didn't have an extended warranty, i would have taken chevrolet to court by now for a new vehicle. i don't think my next vehicle will be a gm.

The 4 wheel drive won't switch from 2 wheel drive when pushing the buttons. now, the lights won't work except for the 2 wheel drive light. nothing happens at all when pushing the buttons. the vehicle stays in 2 wheel drive all the time. i had it checked and i was told the encoder motor and or solenoid was no good. i was also told that there might be a silent recall on this problem. i phoned a chevrolet dealer and they didn't know of any such recall! this is an expensive repair that needs to be addressed, that the consumer should not have to undertake. my vehicle is in excellent condition and i would like to have this problem fixed by the manufacturer. besides the fact that if i wanted to trade the vehicle, this would be a great depreciation on a trade-in. i don't know who to talk to, and find out what to do about this repair and to have the manufacturer liable for the expense.*jb

Encoder motor failure: called chevrolet 800 number to complain about not being able to swictch from 2-wheel drive to 4-wheel. made an appointment with local dealer. after diagnosis, told there was a encoder motor failure and the motor had to be replaced. made several attempts to contact chervrolet point of contact to discuss if this should be covered under warranty since the 4-wheel drive was hardly used and the part is probably defective. however, no response as of yet. the cost is $600 for the repair. the car had only 45,000 miles at the time. prior to that, the light on the 4-wheel button would be lit during switching but nothing would happen. doing a search on the internet resulted in several complaints about the encoder.
