I just picked up my 1997 chevy blazer oct 31, 2012 with 79000 miles on it. i noticed that there was a large amount of corrosion buildup on the under carriage of the vehicle. luckily yesterday, while sitting in my driveway, i noticed brake fluid leaking behind the driver's side door. under closer inspection, i found out that the rear brake line was severely corroded and had burst. now i cannot drive my blazer until i get this fixed. with this leak, i inspected the rest of my brake lines to which i've found both my front brake lines in a severely corroded state as well waiting to burst. this is a great safety issue. *tr

This is a 1997 chevrolet bazer. the anti lock brakes on this vehicle is defective and ingages under varying conditions. the vehicle is unsafe in slippery conditions. front sensors have be checked. this vehicle will engage anti-locks at times when brakes are not applied. brake switch checks ok. pedal will drop under most stops and anti-lock will scream and apply. a jerking brake action is present. i do know there is a recall on 1994-1996 models. by looking on the internet i see that i am not alone in this problem. hubs are ok. i think the trouble may be in the control unit, but no trouble codes appear and scan tool indicates no trouble. i think gm has produced defective units. this car has 90000 miles but has had excellent care and no damage. i would like to know how to disconnect these anti-lock brakes. they are unsafe. there appears to be no way to detect the problem. *ak

The brakes failed on the vehicle and caused a minor accident due to slow traveling speed in parking lot. i have contacted the manufacturer that admits a fault in the abs system, but does not claim responsibilty for the damage. i am not mechanically inclined, but believe this to be a serious problem.

Abs brake light was on for 26,000 miles & could not be shut off by dealerships with at least four attempts. brakes wore out pre-maturely. brakes continue to be very spongy & sometimes goes almost to the floor with difficulty stopping. brake booster also replaced. dealerships say that's the way blazer brakes are. these brakes are dangerous.

Bad a/c: complained to a dealer approximately 10 months (summer of 98) after the purchase about warm air blowing, intermittently, from under the dashboard. the dial was turned to cold position and the fan was off. dealer technician could not recreate the problem even after the car was kept overnight. complained again a couple of months later. however, the dealer could not recreate the problem, but apparently opened the unit and found no problems. about 6 months later (spring of 99), complained about a/c not blowing cool enough air. again, dealer found no problems and stated that it the design defect. about 2 years later, moved to sc where no cold air was blowing - only outside air (it was cooler to open the window). took the car to precision tune and they added freon and a die to detect leaks. the freon seemed to make some difference. no leak was found after a revisit a couple of months later. placed a complaint to the chevrolet 800 number service last year (fall of 02). the operator was somewhat hesitant and questioned why it took so long to report the problem and finally made an appointment with a local dealer. after diagnosis, the dealer determined that the compressor had gone bad. this problem would have been detected if the previous dealer had run diagnostics. made several attempts to talk to chevrolet point of contact about warranty coverage. however, there was no response. the initial complaint was around 10,000 miles and last complaint was around 46000 miles. chevrolet should pay for some or all of the cost ($1000).

Purchased this previously enjoyed vehicle from dealer june 2009, first snow fall found that the abs system locks up when going over any slippery service. pedal is hard to compress during incident and resists pressure, and makes growling sound. outside observer notes that front wheel actually locks up and soon not turn during occurrence. will be serviced by dealer on following friday, should be covered under extended warranty that was purchased when car was purchased. will return with more information after. and will also report if dealer honors warranty in this situation. could cause accident and sliding if not skilled in handling vehicle and even if you are. *tr

Owning this vehicle has been a nightmare and a financial drain. windshield wipers worked when they chose, replaced wiper motor due to defective part. upper and lower ball joints all had to be replaced. wheel bearings had to be replaced. a/c stopped working, had it looked at and recharged and it still doesn't work. fuel gage didn't work, replaced fuel sensor and sending unit. rear wiper quit working, replaced rear wiper motor, a few days later it does not work again. replaced water pump, have replaced abs only to get a recall after the fact with no reimbursement. wears through brake pads entirely too fast. replaced alternator and battery twice. rear hatch does not unlock with key. headlights are so dim they might as well not exist. water leaks into interior on drivers side due to a bad seal. idler arm needs to be replaced. gas pedal sticks. now heater fan works sometimes. reading through the complaints we are all experiencing the same problems and nothing is being done about it. recalls issued on some vehicles but not all? now i hear gm put a bad intake manifold gasket on these as well as several other cars (1997) and did not issue a recall because it is not a safety matter! this causes antifreeze to leak into the engine and ultimately ends in a repair of at least 1500.00. after my experience with this vehicle i will be purchasing soon and it most likely will not be gm. sad since my dad worked for them for 30 years. they should be held accountable for putting a bad product on the market and leaving us to dry. *nm

On 12/22/99, my husband and i were involved in an auto accident. a woman two vehicles in front of us lost control, struck the concrete divider, flipped over & wound up upside down perpendicular in the road in our lane(left lane). our brakes failed in our vehicle & as a result we struck the vehicle in front of us who was appearantly pushed into the overturned vehicle. our vehicle was towed from the scene as we were taken to the hospital. my husband did not have an opportunity to advise the investigating officer of his brake failure. when the officer arrived at the hospital, he told my husband he did not want to hear what he had to say because the officer indicated he had 2 independent witnesses. the officer advised the witnesses stated the van in front of us had stopped with out striking the overturned vehicle, & therefore we too should have been able to stop. we saw the first vehicle lose control & had plenty of time to react with more than ample distance to stop. had our brakes not have failed we would have been able to stop & there would not have been an accident. there has been a recall on 1995-1996 chev blazers related to abs. though our vehicle is a later model, i do believe our claim should be investigated. i have reported the claim to gm as well as our insurance co. please feel free to contact me so that i may answer any questions you may have. i look forward to hearing from you with any information &/or assistance you can provide. thank you in advance for your time & attention in this matter. *ak

In the month of february 1998, while driving in downtown portland, or, the brake pedal went completely to the floor while traveling down a slope and attempting to make a right hand turn. i had to continuously pump the pedal to regain any braking ability. *akwithin 5 minutes, this condition happened again. the weather was rainy and the streets were wet. i immediately took the vehicle to the dealership to determine what the problem might be. they could not determine why this occurred. their service person did mention that it might have something to do with the abs system acting up. now reading the information available on the chevy blazer page on the world wide web, i see that his condition has also happened to others. i refer you to the following e-mail address: lfrat5@aol.com . this person had the exact same problem and has not been able to get chevrolet to resolve it. i fear that this system is randomly defective and worry since my wife and soon to be driving daughter will be driving when this condition occurs. the dealership and chevrolet in general is very unresponsive about this issue, yet they seem to know that something is wrong. i encourage you to read of all of the braking problems with the chevy s-10 blazers. i hope i will get some kind of a response to this report. thank you. tim foster

From the time we purchased the vehicle, we had not been satisfied with the way the brakes functioned. three times from the time of purchase to the date of the first accident, we had the vehicle in for the brakes to be checked. including service less than two weeks (3/14/98) before the initial accident. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for collision repair and at that time we asked for it to be taken to service for the brakes to be fixed before we picked it up. when we called to check on the status, the collision manager told us that it would still be a few days because he picked it up from service when they said it was finished and they said there was nothing wrong with the brakes. he personally drove it back to collision and immediately took it back to service because he knew the brakes were not working appropriately. after that we were contacted because they found two hydraulic fluid leaks in the rear and all the brake pads needed to be replaced. this after they had supposedly checked out the brakes on march 14 and told us there was nothing wrong with them. we agreed to have them do the work and for the first day or two the brakes appeared to be working better. within a week, however, they were functioning as poorly as always. the vehicle was involved in another accident on 10/30/98. it was another slow-speed (20-25 mph) accident where i saw the accident happening, reacted and had time to think about the fact that i was going to crash. in both accidents, it wasn't as though they happened too quickly too react to. i was fully aware of what was happening, slammed on the brakes, and did not stop until hitting the other vehicle. there is also a low, grinding noise at these times when the brakes do not respond because there have been several other times when they have not responded, but it has not caused an accident. i was not issued a ticket in either accident as being at fault, however my insurance has had to pay for the repair of both vehicles because i hit

The windshield wipers came loose twice going down the highway. the front rotors had to be repaired and brake pads replaced. this problem caused severe steering difficulty. ( the mechanic told me this is a common problem in all blazers and he'll see me again in about 15-25k miles)tires had to be replaced early because they wear fast on the front. replaced ball joint recently. vehicle makes excessive noises in front end( including engine compartment) for age. vehicle has had electrical problems since purchace to include ignition replacement, fuel pump and sensors replaced, fuel guage going wacky, lights always seem dim( i have a hard time seeing at night when driving this particular vehicle), vehicle would not start on too many occasions to list and towed once while on a trip for this problem. vehicle had to be jump started on several occasions, battery seems to drain fo no apparent reason. seats and belts have been repaired about 4 times. i only detail listed items which i know the exact dates. which happened. vehicle is at the dealer right now for electrical and they are saying there is no problem. my wife and i are currently trying to work with gm on these issues, but haven't received much help. i am very dissapointed with the gm service and the dealers. i have always been a chevy person, but i don't beleive i want to own another problem. i have heard many people complain about similar problems with their 199x blazer. the two dealers which have worked on this vehicle the most try to tell my wife these problems are normal. no vehicle of this age should have this many problems. i had a 20 year old chevy truck before this blazer and didn't have nearly the problems. sorry, had to vent a little. *ak

At 14000 miles, the left front pad was so worn that it ate into the rotor. the brakes were then serviced by the dealer for free. after 7000 more miles the braking was so poor that i replaced the front pads and rotors myself. at 30000 miles, the brakes were fading so bad i had to have them serviced again but at a nearby dealer (and paid their service fee ). now, they are starting to fade yet again, getting worse every day. after hearing in the news that gm has to pay for a sensor on vehicles before 97, i am telling you now that the investigation should not be over! i was talking to the service manager at a chevrolet dealer and he flat out told me that the brake systems on all of gm's light truck s and t platforms without 4 wheel disk brakes were very poorly engineered. every time i see a blazer/jimmy or gm pickup i can't help but notice the overwhelming amount of brake dust on the front rims. i swear the rear drums are useless! i can't afford to keep fixing my trucks brakes every 10,000 miles.
