Wipers don't work then work won't shut off for a long time, usually shut off during a downpour, cruise control quit working, flashers sound erratic won't shut off unless brake is pressed, passenger side seat adjustment handle broke off, i have cut my leg numerous times as well as others. passenger side seat belt won't lock just pulls out. drivers side seat recline broke off only used that about 5 times. now one of the rear hatch shocks broke off the bracket that holds the shock in place cracked off, hatch door is really heavy. the right flasher flashes real fast even though it still works. i will never ever buy a chevy blazer again or anything even close this vehicle has been nothing but a pain in my butt for 10 years. i absolutely hate it!! it's becoming a hazard to drive because of the wipers acting sporadic all the time and with winter coming early it's scary. i hope something is done about this soon. i been reading about other peoples problems and their exactly like mine. somebody said something about a multifunction board to repair it. yeah their 200.00 dollars and have to take apart the steering column. i shouldn't have to pay one penny for all my repairs that i need.. shame on gm. *tr

1998 chevy s-10 blazer with 97k miles and the windshield wipers worked intermittently. this would unfortunately occur when the windshield washer button would be pressed leaving the windshield completely covered in soapy solution and making it difficult to see. after visiting several websites the answer to our problem was on this link http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic130258.htm. the control circuit card attached to the windshield wiper motor assembly had cracked solder joints on 7 pins of the harness connector. i believe this to be a solder fatigue problem due to vibration and temperature cycling and the fact that the harness connector body is long and made of a different material than the circuit card leaving the solder joints under stress due to mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients. consequently, after ten years the solder joints finally gave up. the good news is that the circuit card is easy to remove (3 torque screws) and the solder joints can be simply reflowed with a soldering iron and fresh solder. the solder joint cracks are easy to see using a magnifying glass. the wipers are now working properly again. *tr

Windshield wipers work when they want. at times there is no problem at other times the stop in mid cycle and at other times the speed control won't allow them to shut off. this normally occurs during a downpour. i have looked at the other complaints and would like to know how many it takes before ntsb decides to make gm repair an obvious safety issue with this model. *jb

I have owned my '98 blazer for about a year, and it was and still is a very well maintained vehicle, but the turn signal is clicking and making me crazy! i also have the windshield wiper malfunction, they won't stop sometimes. are the manufacturers going to do anything about this? i have the complaint history on these trucks and i think it is a rather large problem!

My wife and i have had to make major repairs to our 1998 blazer. we had to replace the water pump ($294.55) in october 2002. then, the transmission started slipping and got worse. we took it to aamco, where we were informed that it had to be rebuilt. this was in july of 2002. the total cost was ($2077.37). i inquired that same month at chevrolet about recalls, and they said that there were none. since then, we have had numerous minor problems with the lame suv, including broken recliner handles, steering that pulls and grinds, and a malfunctioning electrical system (clicking sounds from under the glove box, three batteries replaced). i saw a report last week about the use of dexcool and its possible link to problems in gm vehicles. are there any remedies available at this time? *ak

10/10/2001 replaced the alternator - it was over charged and went bad! noticed several complaints about this too! 12/20/2001 windshield wipers stopped working in heavy rain. then when motor turned off and on again they worked, this has been happening on and off since that time, but today 06/26/2004 they just stopped all together - nothing helped. had to have the same soldering repair done as in the 1995 -1997 chevrolet s-10 / blazers - which i might add was a recall. the same parts are used in most 1998's as well. the recall needs to include all of the components, not just a few of them! also i have had several dash parts break loose - like the hatch door release / back wiper control is just sitting there - nothing holding it in. the passenger side seat recliner handle fell off - had it put back on at dealer - then it broke off. (makes being a passenger in my blazer very uncomfortable) i have noticed several complaints about this too! the drivers outside door handle - one of the screws that holds it in place is not able to put back due to plastic is stripped- so the door handle wabbles. the heat from the sun has bowed up the front windsheild vent until it is cracked and broken now too. i have always driven chevrolet's - but here latley with all of the plastic they are using - i am beginning to wonder if my money wouldn't be better spent in another make of vehicle. i love the design and ect. of the blazer - but the plastic is not holding up - this is some expensive plastic to be made so cheap. if you shut the doors hard at all the whole top of the arm rest pops up and has to be popped back in place.*ak

Had to replace altenator. handle of passenger seat fell off in hand, causing riding and sitting difficult. puts me right up to the air bag. purchased this vehicle to take my husband to nashville, for his heart transplant visits, needed a reliable vehicle. on the last trip there, 70 mph, in hard rain, no windshield wipers, just quit on the expressway, in heavy traffic. gas pedal also sticks, and pushes with force, when it releases. (wonder we haven't hit someone). being on social security,we thought paying extra, for and extended warranty would protect us. (a wasted $1800.00) the payment takes almost half our income, we can't afford to fix the manufacturers mistakes. by looking at the other complaints, we're not the first with the above problems. very unhappy consumer. our first payment on the blazer was 1-14-02, we began having these problems 6 months later. *tt

Upon returning to my truck on tues evening 4/1/03 (after it was parked for 1 1/2 hrs) i noticed a burning smell when i opened the door. i had about a 4 mile ride home so i started the vehicle and attempted to go home. as i drove, the burning smell became horribly worse even though i could not see any smoke. i decided it was safer to drop it off at my local dealer (patterson chevrolet in hamilton nj)since it was on the way. i disconnected the battery as a precaution. the dealer worked on the truck on 4/2. in the process of trying to locate the source of the smell, they had to reconnect the battery. this resulted in the vehicle catching on fire!! fortunately, they had traced the source of the smell to a wire harness under the passenger seat floor board that gets connected to a power seat (which i do not have!) and they had removed the carpeting and seats before the fire started. upon extinguishing the fire, they removed the damaged wire harness and re-installed the seats & carpeting. this left me with a vehicle that still smells absolutely horrible and a $531 repair bill. if i had parked my truck in my attached garage like i do every night instead of running an errand, the truck most definitely would have caught fire in my garage and could have killed my entire family. i consider this a very near tragedy and the design of this wire harness needs to be looked at immediately before someone actually does get killed. why didn't a fuse blow that automatically cut power to the shorting wire? is this a recall item? copies of this e-mail are being forwarded to the cpsc and the nhtsa for review as well. there is no way a wire under a floor board should simply catch fire! secondly, there is nothing that i could have done that could have prevented this incident or caused it. the repair expense in this instance should not be the burden of the consumer. *jb

Multi- function switch problem. the wipers quit working during the rain. in the past i have spoken to dealer service managers and they said a lot of complaints have been made about the multi function switch that controls the wiper delay but there has been no recalls made on it. mostly what happens is the wipers will not turn off with the switch, the ignition has to be turned off to turn off the wipers. the concern is the wiper stopping during heavy rain causing loss of visibility. this has been occurring for years, i just became aware of this route of complaint process. the replacement of the multi function switch is expensive. clicking is also heard at times due to the switch, a service manager has said the multi- function switch causes this also. the 10 for number of failures is the minimum number of times i can remember the wipers stopped when operating. *jb

Blinker noise persists even when blinkers are turned off. sound disapears after engaging brake pedal then persists when break pedal is released. in a heavy rain storm, had to use windshield wipers and after a few minutes of use white smoke came from the steering column. talked to a gm mechanic who told me that this problem could cause my airbag to deploy - a real liability. called gm to explain the problem & possible liability of airbag deployment (case #1-333564043) & was told that because of the blazer being a 1998 there may be nonthing they can do. the same multi-function switch was made in mexico for 1998-2001 models and if it disfunctions can cause break lights not to work as well as major electrical issues like airbag deployment or fire - wouldn't this be a recall for all models that have the part?

Had drivers side door rehung due to sagging. shortly after that my interior lights began to malfunction and my auto reserve power(allows radio, interior lights and power windows to operate for 15 minutes after engine shutoff) began to work occasionally. also, the windshield wipers operate randomly - juggling the wires under the hood helps to make them run . now, at 3:30am this morning, i realize that my headlights are not operating, checked in the morning and the daytime running lights work, but when you manually turn the headlamps on, the daylights go out and you have no headlights on.*ak

Our blazer caught on fire while driving down the interstate. we were traveling at 75 mph using the cruise control. the steering wheel jerked a little and we immediately saw black smoke coming from the rear of the vehicle. white smoke was coming out of the passenger side under the hood. we pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the engine. as we were pulling off the road the computer controlled dash instruments started to malfunction, but at no time did the engine appear to have problems. as soon as we pulled over we realized we had a fire & immediately called 911. someone stopped with a small fire extinguisher to try a stop the flames. the fire appeared to be located towards the dash on the passenger side down in the middle or lower area of the engine compartment. the fire was so hot that it went through the passenger side below the dash board and entered the cab of blazer. at that point we had nothing left to extinguish the fire and shut all the doors and the hood to try & contain & smother the fire. we then waited for help. we were 150 miles from home when this happened on a rural stretch of interstate (the nearest town was 18 miles away). we would like an investigation to find our what happened to our vehicle. our insurance company won't help. we have contacted the dealer and we are still waiting for the general manager to call back. we contacted gm and got as far as the product allegation resolution team. they sent a letter stating our investigation revealed no evidence to support product allegation. we called them back and they admitted that they never looked at the vehicle. he said he followed procedures according to company policy (we have requested a copy of that policy). our vehicle is still where it was originally towed in march. we would appreciate your help in this matter. thank you. *ak
