Defect SummaryVehicle description: light duty pickup trucks and multi-purpose passenger vehicles. a fatigue fracture of the rear axle right-hand brake pipe can occur causing a slow brake fluid leak resulting in a soft brake pedal. if the brake pipe breaks, the driver would experience a sudden drop in the brake pedal, the instrument panel brake light would illuminate, and there would be a loss of rear brake performance.
Consequence SummaryPartial loss of braking at a time when minimum stopping distance was required could result in a vehicle crash.
Corrective SummaryDealers will inspect and replace the brake pipe.
NotesOwner notification is expected to begin during december 1997. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537, or gmc at 1-800-462-8782.also contact the national highway traffic safety administration's auto safety hotline at 1-800-424-9393.

My wife was in danger driving the truck when she brought it to another route (another shop), which was hutchens chevrolet. they told my wife and gave her the paper work stating that, the truck was unsafe and she could have been in danger if continued driving it. when he was told of the brake problems, (the car dealership owner) he instructed my wife to take it to his own auto repair shop, when my wife got the truck back, it was in the same state not everything was fixed. the work was completed at hutchens. the work had to have cost about $378.00. and there are more troubles with the truck, i see signs of rust and corrosion, there are vibrations when the vehicle is in excess of 60 miles.

My abs light goes on frequently. i have been in a couple of almost collisions. in slow moving traffic, the sensor goes on and freezes my brakes. my car has been to dealership and to repair centers and all companies say they there is nothing wrong. the solution each time was just to replace the sensor, however, even driving out of dealership the abs light went on. i have read in the past similar instances with abs problems, is there ever going to be a recall, or is it going to take a serious lawsuit/accident before the problem gets fixed? i also have experienced the right passenger seat handle breaking, and it is still broken. *jb

First the abs warning light started illuminating every so often starting in 2002, now the wipers have become very erratic. it has now gotten so bad that it has become a safety hazard. it does not matter what setting ( delay, slow or fast) the wipers are set at they react on their own. sometimes they stop completely which causes a severe safety hazard when driving in the rain. you could have the setting on slow delay and they will begin going very fast or medium speed, then change again for no reason. they also continue to run when the switch is turned completely off. this started about two months ago and has increased in intensity with each use due to rain. i understand previous year models were recalled for a very similar problem and i am wondering if this years model has been added to the recall list? *nlm

When depressing brake pedal to come to a stop, pedal is hard and will not go down. if i keep my foot on pedal eventually it stops but it requires longer stopping distance. while driving makes humming, moaning noise until abs light comes on and problem stops. braking becomes easier. was told by mechanic that right front hub bearing is bad and needs to be replaced. was told this may clear up abs/braking situation. fuel gauge does not work properly. shows half tank when near empty. as fuel level goes down, gauge goes up.fuel pump went out and had to be replaced.

I have contacted gm several times to no avail.here are my problems.the right side latch on the seat has been replaced three times by apple valley cherolet. now the one on the left has broken.this is a two door vehicle and the only way to get in and out of back seat.this car is not mistreated to have this happen.three times it has left me sitting and wont start sometimes you can tell when its going to happen because the lights will dim and the charging gage will drop they have tried to repair this but havent, the windsheild wipers now will delay for about five times then they just stop in the middle of the windsheild or keep running as fast as they can until you turn them off and start over, the four wheel drive system kicks in on its own and you have to stop to get it back to two wheel drive, not the light on the dash it stays in two,the brakes are spongee and go almost all the way to the floor,gm said my blazer wasnt in the recall for the brakes because of where it was made, the exhaust smells like sewer i dont know if i have an exhaust leak or not, when i received this vehicle i ordered it in december of 97 and received it in feb. of 98.the bolt was missing off of the strut, they replaced that and alligned the front end and it still will not stay in allignment, since the warranty has ran out 4,000 miles ago we have replaced a belt tightner and a water pump

We have had numerous problems with the antilocking brake system. the vehicle has been taken to the dealership for brake repairs several times. the abs light has burned for at least half of the time that we have owned the vehicle. the first time we were told that the alternator was causing the abs light to stay on. two weeks before the accident the dealership replaced the brake module. the accident was caused when the brakes locked up and sent the vehicle into a spin in the middle lane of a three lane highway. the accident occurred at 11:30 am on a dry highway, and luckily no other vehicles were close. we contacted chevrolet who sent an engineer to inspect the vehicle. he said nothing was wrong with the brake system.*ak

While driving my vehicle the cruise control went into resume and failed to let me slow down or stop vehicle. i applied the brakes several times, and i also applied the gas, while holding both feet over the brakes, vehicle still wouldn't disengage. i drove the vehicle in that position for about one mile, trying to get it to stop. when i approached my turning intersection and applied the brakes, the right tire lifted over the curb, and took my vehicle into the path of the southbound ongoing traffic. i then turned my wheel to the right to avoid running into the traffic, and the vechicle went over the grassie medium. i then applied my brakes again, but the vehicle still wouldn't disengage. at that time i realized that the vehicle wasn't going to stop. i then released my seat belt, pushed the door open, and then pushed myself outward of the vehicle. i fell onto the ground, and the vehicle continued to travel northbound and across a four-line highway, and hit a comerica bank pole. two policeofficers were sent to the scene, and i was given a ticket. the ticket was for failing to maintain control of my vehicle. i tried numberous times to stop my vehicle, but it wouldn't disengage. please contact me!

This vehicle is plagued with problems. replaced both front & rear shocks at 51,800 miles at a cost of $342.00. at 50,800 miles, replaced disc pads, disc brake shims and rear rotors at a cost of $290.00 - rear brakes were completely rusted out. four new tires at a cost of $440.00 were put on this vehicle at 48,610 miles. i have had this vehicle aligned and tires balanced three times in ten months - one was a forced balance at a cost of $160.00. the steering wheel is not straight and the vehicle's passenger side sits 1 to 1 1/2 lower than the driver's side. no one seems to be able to figure out what the problem is with this vehicle. next repair is to adjust the torsion bar and re-align it to see if this fixes the problem. every time i go over the slightest bump, the whole body of the vehicle shakes! it feels and sounds like the fenders and doors are going to fall off. i have owned this vehicle for 13 months, put 8,600 miles on it and have spent $2,385.00 in repairs so far. i am not a happy person.*ak
