The windshield wipers quit working without notice. we purchased this vehicle new in 1998 it only has 80,000 miles. the wipers have been doing this since 2003. when wipers quit working we are unable to see the roadway and this presents a safety hazard. i have read about others having the same problem. i have not had this repair done because i should not have to pay for a defect that chevrolet knows about. if this defect should cause an accident i will acquire an attorney and file suite against chevrolet for failure to repair said defect. *tr

Wipers don't work then work won't shut off for a long time, usually shut off during a downpour, cruise control quit working, flashers sound erratic won't shut off unless brake is pressed, passenger side seat adjustment handle broke off, i have cut my leg numerous times as well as others. passenger side seat belt won't lock just pulls out. drivers side seat recline broke off only used that about 5 times. now one of the rear hatch shocks broke off the bracket that holds the shock in place cracked off, hatch door is really heavy. the right flasher flashes real fast even though it still works. i will never ever buy a chevy blazer again or anything even close this vehicle has been nothing but a pain in my butt for 10 years. i absolutely hate it!! it's becoming a hazard to drive because of the wipers acting sporadic all the time and with winter coming early it's scary. i hope something is done about this soon. i been reading about other peoples problems and their exactly like mine. somebody said something about a multifunction board to repair it. yeah their 200.00 dollars and have to take apart the steering column. i shouldn't have to pay one penny for all my repairs that i need.. shame on gm. *tr

1998 chevy s-10 blazer with 97k miles and the windshield wipers worked intermittently. this would unfortunately occur when the windshield washer button would be pressed leaving the windshield completely covered in soapy solution and making it difficult to see. after visiting several websites the answer to our problem was on this link http://www.automotivehelper.com/topic130258.htm. the control circuit card attached to the windshield wiper motor assembly had cracked solder joints on 7 pins of the harness connector. i believe this to be a solder fatigue problem due to vibration and temperature cycling and the fact that the harness connector body is long and made of a different material than the circuit card leaving the solder joints under stress due to mismatch of thermal expansion coefficients. consequently, after ten years the solder joints finally gave up. the good news is that the circuit card is easy to remove (3 torque screws) and the solder joints can be simply reflowed with a soldering iron and fresh solder. the solder joint cracks are easy to see using a magnifying glass. the wipers are now working properly again. *tr

My complaint is a result of poor design and placement of the power window switch on the rear doors. my wife, my two daughters and myself were waiting on a slow moving queue line. the vehicle was turned off but the key was in the on position. my wife and i were standing directly outside the vehilce. my 3 year old daughter was freely walking around the inside of the vehicle. she stood on the arm rest to see what was going on outside the car and inadvertantly stood on the power window switch. the switch is a toggle type where you push the switch down to put the window down but the biggest problemn is that you also push the other side of the switch down the put the window up. when she stood on the switch the window closed on her neck. we were fortunate to act quickly and stopped the window 1 1/2 inches from the fully closed position. i shutter to think of what would have happened if our actions werent as quick. we initially questioned why the drivers side window control switch was not engaged. the answer is that the switch not only controls the rear wondows but also the passenger door and is normally off for convenience for the passenger. i have to question why the passenger window is included in this control switch as it is illegal to have children in the front seat anyway. i also own a 98 honda accord and the designers of the power window switches in that vehicle have obviously taken this hazard into consideration where the switch has to be lifted in order to close the window. the switch location in my 98 blazer as well as design must be changed before something terrible happens to another child. please feel free to contact me with regard to this matter.

The windshield wipers stop working, do not respond to the delay setting, and often do not trun off when the switch is turned to the off position. that causes rapid wiper blade wear and a loud suealing sound. often, the wipers will continue to run for more than 10 minutes after turning off. this is very distracting while driving. *ak

Within 8 months of purchasing my vehicle i started having problems with opening the drivers side front door. the vertical moulding attached to the drivers side triangle window would overlap the drivers door when the drivers door was shut. this made it very difficult to enter of exit the vehicle which could be thought of as a safety hazard. it was brought in to the dealership where i purchased the vehicle to be fixed 7 times. three of the times they replaced the entire side triangle window, yet it still kept happening. the last time i brought the car in was 11/19/1999. the problem looks to be fixed now but only time will tell. the dealership has said that they have seen other blazers with this same problem, yet not as bad. it seems to be a design flaw which should be taken care off. there is a possibility that if there was an accident where the blazer caught on fire, the driver may not be able to quickly exit the vehicle due to this problem. *ak

1998 chevrolet blazer windshield wiper failures 1) wiper operation has been intermittent and does not always function when wiper controls are exercised. occurrence of this problem has been ongoing since this vehicles' initial purchase in 12/97. 2) wiper failure has resulted in unsafe driving conditions and near collisions with other vehicles. 3) initial investigation has deemed potential causes of failure to be cracked solder joints in wiper motor circuit module and/or defective wiper control switch. corresponding corrective action is replacement of both: wiper motor circuit module and wiper control switch. *jb

Vehicle: 1998 chevy blazer 4dr 4x4 4.3l vortec v6 events leading up to failure: normal driving conditions failure(s): there are two primary concerns with this vehicle: 1) fuel gauge does not work, it will report complete full and when varying amounts of fuel the fuel gauge bounces around(usually between half and full, but sometimes between e and full) i am forced to use trip odometer and approximate fuel economy to determine tank level. i have heard several to many anecdotal stories of other chevy vehicles experiencing the same symptoms. 2) the windshield wipers work sporadically. currently when operating in 'intermittent' mode, the windshield wipers will begin to operate in continuous, regular speed and will not turn off when switch turned to 'off' position. situation will occasionally correct itself after several minutes. other times i am required to stop, park, and turn off the vehicle before restarting it to turn the wipers off. occasionally the wipers will not work at all in any position. usually this only happens for a short periods of time, while i am trying to turn them on by scrubbing through all the positions of the switch. i owned a 95 gmc jimmy prior to this vehicle and experienced the exact same problem. this model year was covered under a recall that ended with, i believe, the 97 model year. corrections/repairs: i have had neither problem repaired. therefore, i still have the old parts. instead of repairing, currently financially unfeasible, i am using rain-x for the windshield and the odometer for a fuel gauge. *incident date is approximately the last time the windshield wipers were used. i haven't driven in the rain much this summer. *jb

10/10/2001 replaced the alternator - it was over charged and went bad! noticed several complaints about this too! 12/20/2001 windshield wipers stopped working in heavy rain. then when motor turned off and on again they worked, this has been happening on and off since that time, but today 06/26/2004 they just stopped all together - nothing helped. had to have the same soldering repair done as in the 1995 -1997 chevrolet s-10 / blazers - which i might add was a recall. the same parts are used in most 1998's as well. the recall needs to include all of the components, not just a few of them! also i have had several dash parts break loose - like the hatch door release / back wiper control is just sitting there - nothing holding it in. the passenger side seat recliner handle fell off - had it put back on at dealer - then it broke off. (makes being a passenger in my blazer very uncomfortable) i have noticed several complaints about this too! the drivers outside door handle - one of the screws that holds it in place is not able to put back due to plastic is stripped- so the door handle wabbles. the heat from the sun has bowed up the front windsheild vent until it is cracked and broken now too. i have always driven chevrolet's - but here latley with all of the plastic they are using - i am beginning to wonder if my money wouldn't be better spent in another make of vehicle. i love the design and ect. of the blazer - but the plastic is not holding up - this is some expensive plastic to be made so cheap. if you shut the doors hard at all the whole top of the arm rest pops up and has to be popped back in place.*ak

Oil coiler lines leaked from the day i bought it from the dealer. dealer definitely knew and cleaned it up before i got it. 1st set of lines from radiator to oil filter replaced a few months after purchase in 2001. second set from filter to motor now need replacing. evidently, this is a very common problem. wipers have their own agenda. with the mist setting to clean windows, wipers stay on for as long as they want. with the second mist, they don't stay on as long. by the third mist, wipers act normal. always happens. turn signal flasher sound started without the use of the turn signal. it stays on for random lengths of time, and makes the sound in regular, and irregular patterns. replacing multifunction switch - as several have before me. dealer knew exactly what the problem was. tranfer case leaks lube. 4-wheel drive messed up because of empty case. added lube and hope no tranmission problems arrise. cv joint replaced 4 months after purchase. hood latch about to break. when pulling on leaver, barely is able to pop hood. feels like wire is going to snap. waiting for the next problem to occur - it has been nonstop. gm designed a terrible vehicle. i am very dissatisfied and i regret ever buying it.

1998 chevrolet blazer. the windshield wipers work intermittently. they will stop at any given time, during wet weather. the stopped wiper blocks view through the windshield. no damage has occurred to the wiper motor/circuit board or wiring. this is a product failure that gm has not recalled for this make/model/year. they have recalled 1996, 1997, 2002, and 2003 suvs with the same complaint. after many conversations with gm representatives, they refuse to repair the defective equipment. i must pay for repairs out of my own pocket. why won't they recall the 1998 line when there are so many complaints about them? a quick on-line internet search yields hundreds of unhappy 1998 blazer owners that are experiencing the very same wiper issues that caused the other recalls. *nm

On several occasions my windshield wipers did not work according to the setting on the windshield wiper control. many times the wipers would go on and not shut off and many time the wipers would not go on at all. over the span of 18,000 miles the effect have been dangerous to my personal safety. on sunny days when applying the windshield washer, the wipers would not operate. this causes me to pull over and pull on the windshield wipers until they start and then they do not turn off. on rainy days, they turn off without warning causing me to pull over on the highway and risk being hit due to a driver side vehicle exit on busy highways to manually clean the window or wait until the rain stops. i have had the control replaced at a cost of over $300 but the problem still persists. i have been told the motor needs to be replaced due to faulty connections from the pulse controller board and the wiper motor. this is a major safety flaw in the vehicle and must be corrected by gm. i hope you can help all the owners of vehicles using ac delco part number 15036008 wiper motors. many complaint have been documented and it is time that the nhtsa protected the drivers of the vehicles effected regardless of the pain caused to gm. if it saves only one life it is worth it. how many people have died and have not been able to document the problem due to their deaths? how many complaints does it take before you take action against an obvious safety flaw in a vehicle? this must be addressed. *nm

For the past 3 years my windshield wipers have worked intermittenly during rainy or wet conditions. this has caused me a great deal of concern and frustration since it has at times been so difficult to see while on the road during a rain that i've had to pull over for safety sake. these are the same conditions described by the recall of the '95 chevy blazer that i read. mine is a '98 chevy blazer. according to the dealer i've taken this in to for possible recall, this is not unusual for this year and model. expecting for a recall on this for the past 3 years, i've still not had it repaired.

Windshield wipers work when they want on or not. also only work on high for 10% of time. can't go anywhere when it is raining because of not knowing when wipers will work. have almost had 3 accidents because of suddenly no wipers in down pours. called dealership will cost anywhere from $80.00 to $300.00 to fix depending on what is the problem. can't get fix because just spent $1000.00 on oil cooler lines for the 2nd time. also had this same problem with my 93 truck and my 86 truck but they were recalled along with my boyfriends 97 truck with the same manufacture date on windshield wiper motor. but 98 blazers aren't recalled even though they have the same windshield circuits and motors. doesn't make since to me. somebody is going to get killed with this as i have seen many complaints on this with the 98 blazer. *nm

During the first rainstorm since i bought my used blazer, my front windshield wiper didn't work when turned on. after repeatedly turning the switch on and off, the wiper finally worked at high speed only. after a while, it worked at low speed and intermitent speed. then while in the intermitent speed position, the wiper worked in low speed only. when switched off, the wiper didn't immediately stop. since the rainstorm, this problem was an intermittent problem with the wiper either working correctly or malfunctioning. i removed the windshield wiper pulse control module from the wiper motor, examined the circuit board, and found eight cracked solder joints. i resoldered the defective solder joints and reinstalled the module into the wiper motor. the front windshield wiper has worked correctly since my repair. the design of the circuit board is poor. these failures occurred at stress points. apparently no accommodation was made to mechanically secure the leads to the circuit board before the leads were soldered. instead, solder was used to both mechanically secure the leads to the circuit board and electrically provide the electrical conductivity required. to exacerbate this situation, not enough solder was used at these joints. the previous owner told me that the front windshield wiper operated erratically, but it happened after the warranty period and the erratic operation was not so bad that he was overly concerned about it. it is a fact that cracks on defective solder joints widen when subjected to stress over a period of time. this has been an identified safety problem in general motors' 1994 to 1997 pickups, sport utility vehicles, and vans.

I purchased the vehicle used. but from the day i purchased it, i had a problem with the windshield wipers! it seemed as though sometimes they will freeze halfway through the motion, and other times they wouldn't shut off.*ak one year later - due to lack of time and funding - i have been unable to fix this problem - which has now progressed to the point in which 80% of the time my windshield wipers will fail to work! i will turn the knob - and they don't not come on! i have found that a short in terms of loose connection does not appear to be the cause of this malfunction. i have also tested this theory by turning on the wipers to max speed (of the 20% of the time my wipers work, about 3/4 of that time will the wipers only work when i have them set to maximum speed) - i have even seen several times, while driving over a completely flat surface, my wipers set to max speed, suddenly come to life again! only to stop working again later. i also attempted driving over potholes to see if the bump would jarr the chip into working - it did not work once. gm has stated that this problem is caused by the wiper pulse control modual. i searched around - and found that this wiper modual (wether it is the same one, or variations of the same unit) go back i believe to the 1980's! now that is insane worst of all - 1998 was one of the only years not recalled by gm! i have found this to be a very common problem - and find it obsurde that i must pay $130 to the dealership to have this item repaired. i would easily pay the $100 for the board if i was not a college student - who can't afford to spend $100 on something like this - and i also just find it stupid that i should be forced to pay the dealership a lot of money for something that they have been having problems with for 10+ years! thank you for reading this report - i just had to express my deepest anger with gm for watching them continue to ignore this large threat

Windshield wipers do not operate reliably enough that they should be considered a hazard. they stop working on almost every occasion that they are required for visibility and often will not stop when turned off and additionally the speed at which they will operate is also unreliable. i have been able to get the wipers to resume operation when i have tapped on the circuit board cover but they usually stop again before i reach my destination and often before i get back out on the road. from the number of complaints that i have read of and personally heard about concerning this model year (and also other model years) with this same problem i feel that it is outrageous that a recall has not been issued to correct this problem that appears to be known by the manufacturer and even acknowledged so by the manufacturer in the previous model year. serious consequences will arise when these faulty wiper systems fail a the most critical of times, if it hasn't already. *nlm

Windshield wipers do not work properly, sometimes they do not work at all, sometimes they will not turn off for a long time after the switch is turned off.from the complaints i have read on this internet site,it seems that you thought this was a problem in previous years, but it's not a problem now.please believe me,it is.try it out for yourself.next time you are coming home fron a long trip, with two kids in the car, pretend that it's raining, pull off the road and sit there for over an hour, you can't get out of the car and stretch, you can't take your kids to the bathroom.okay,it stopped raining,on your way again.after a half hour of driving, woops,it's raining again.apparently, nobody told the clouds that a 98 chevy blazer was on the highway.still don'y think it's a problem, try this.take your child to a very important event that they have to attend,a little over half way there, pretend that it starts to rain, and your wipers won't turn on.do you try to see through the rain cascading down you windshield and hope that you can keep your car on the road and out of heavy oncoming traffic or do you pull off the road and hope that the rain doesn't last more than the twenty minutes of extra time you allowed yourself.i could go on,but the bottom line is there is a malfunction problem in the wiper control system in these vehicles .do you need death reports before a problem becomes a problem?why don't you ,at the very least, send a questionaire to the owners of these vehicles to see how many have this problem, can't you do something?*ak

Windshield wipers seem to work when they feel like it. unfortunately they don't feel like it when it rains. i had to drive 6 miles in heavy rain with no wipers tonight. when i came home i started researching this and am upset to find that this happens frequently to other blazer owners. i feel this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed by a recall. *ak

Windshield wipers don't operate properly. windshield wipers sometimes come on by themselves, and will not turn off. also, windshield wipers will stop operating during inclement weather. the dealer inspected the wipers and informed the consumer that there is a wiring problem with the windshield wipers. *ak *nm

#1.windshield wipers fail to come on and it seems that if the cruise control is on that's when they don't work. could be a coincidence??heard 97's had same problem and they were under recall. #2.inside of car always feels like you have heater . have to run a/c to feel cool. #3 interior overhead light fails to come on or to go off. #4 had my transmission fluid changed 6 months ago and next day my check engine light came on and dealer said my transmission needed repaired for about $1200.00 and i had no money to do it. what's strange is my car drives beautifully and i've never felt any gear slippage. is there some sort of reset button for this? *ak

Turn signal indicator continues to click after turn signal has been shut off. it clicks randomly while driving when the turn signal has not been activated. as with other 1998 blazers, the windsheild wipers work intermittently, usually they do not shut off for several minutes.*ak

The windshield wipers work intermittently. they will just stop working for long periods of time, and other times will work properly. 1995 through 1997 blazers were recalled for the same problem, but the 1998 was not included (see nhsta campaign id# 98v150001, recall date july 1, 1998). chevrolet told me to get it fixed and if it becomes a recall item, i will be reimbursed. *ph

I have a 1998 4x4 chevrolet blazer. i bought the vehicle in august of 2002. since then, the windshield wipers have quit off and on. if the quit, i have to tape the wiring harness where they plug in. it appears that the harness begins to sag after time and pulls the plugs out. *ak

At night during a pouring rainstorm my windshield wipers stopped working on a narrow two lane road. think this won't quicken your pulse? repair was $166.00 and my mechanic says this is a frequent repair in his shop. i see plenty of compaints for this same problem in the 1998 model. this is a real safety issue and a recall should be issued.

First the abs warning light started illuminating every so often starting in 2002, now the wipers have become very erratic. it has now gotten so bad that it has become a safety hazard. it does not matter what setting ( delay, slow or fast) the wipers are set at they react on their own. sometimes they stop completely which causes a severe safety hazard when driving in the rain. you could have the setting on slow delay and they will begin going very fast or medium speed, then change again for no reason. they also continue to run when the switch is turned completely off. this started about two months ago and has increased in intensity with each use due to rain. i understand previous year models were recalled for a very similar problem and i am wondering if this years model has been added to the recall list? *nlm
