I was driving highway speed when i heard a loud grinding noise in front end then a severe pull to my left which veered me off the road , luckily there was a grassy knoll to my left and not a guard rail. when i exited i found my front left wheel off . the shop said my wheel fell off due to a bad bearing. i found this odd due to my replacing both bearings a year before. apparently its a common problem. veh. has 147k at this incident and only 126k when replaced parts the first time. in addition had 4x4 actuator replaced, fuel pump, oil cooler lines replaced, and pitman arm...all apparently common and frequent repairs with this vehicle !! *tr

Vehicle making a loud snapping noise when turning left. brought to a local garage, was told that both of front wheels were about to fall off, and it would be very dangerous to drive vehicle. the mechanic actually explained my problem to me, showing me the inch of play that he could shake my wheels. he then went on to tell me that he fixes this problem in this make of vehicle about once a week. my blazer has 55,000 miles, and has been maintained very well. i am terrified to think about what could have happened, as well as disappointed and upset. *la

Manufacturer appears to have failed to grease ball joints during assembly. it also appears that two purchsed grease jobs also were not actually performed by the dealer. at 7,000 miles the front end was making grinding noise and the steering wheel was lurching on turns. the dealer's fix is to grease the ball joints and send us back on the road without an inspection nor alignment check.

While driving (at about 5 mph) the driver's side front lower ball joint failed. the car dropped to that side, and steering control was lost. luckily this happened as i was slowing to a stop before entering a highway. it appeared as though the wheel had been separated from the front suspension. after towing to a mechanic, i found that it was the lower ball joint that had failed, and the brake line had also been severed. as a result the shocks on that side were bent out of shape, and the shocks on the other side were stretched out (as it was pulled by the weight of the dropped side). had i been on the highway or traveling at a higher speed, i have no doubt that a serious accident would have occurred with possible injury or death. *nm

The driver side upper ball joint failedcoming out of a mcdonalds making a left turn at slow speed. i pulled it over immediately and had it towed. i have the part (upper ball joint) and it is very mangled. i ahve not been in any accidents, hit any curves, and get them lubed every 3,000 miles when i have the oil changed. i really would hate to have seen this happen on the highway at 65 or 70 mph. the only thing i asked the dealer is if the part was under recall. they said no. the $975.00 is for replacement of all the ball joints. i did not feel comfortable changing just the one just in case. i do have all the parts. if you want them i can send them to you. i am not doing this to get out of paying the bill. i have already payed it in full. it bothers me that it happened because i go out of my way to make sure that my vehicle is maintained properly. another point is that i had new tires put on three weeks ago, with an alignment, and supposedly everything was ok then.*ak

Both front wheel bearings assemblies failed on my 1999 blazer. the vehicle had about 68,000 miles. according to the mechanic, there is no scheduled and/or preventive maintenance for these parts. i understand that continued use of the vehicle with the bad bearings could cause a catostrophic failure. since the problem is just noise, and very expensive to repair, the poor design of these parts could lead to serious safety problems as the vehicles age.

I have a 1999 chevrolet blazer that is very well maintained. i had to replace both front end wheel hub bearings before it had 60,000 miles on it. there must be defective bearings being put in these vehicles. there is no way a wheel bearing should wear out before 60,000 miles. i wrote to chevrolet corporate offices & they told me they were sorry but didn't offer any compensation. i am filing this report to help others in the future. it is quite expensive to replace wheel bearings and if enough people complain maybe chevrolet will take some responsibility for installing defective parts. *jb

Front wheel bearing went bad to the point of making noise and when we tore it down for repairs, the bearing on the ft. rt. (2wd) their was a lot of metal shavings behind bearing. upon a search of several parts stores the only source was a dealer item. no problem except for the 487.00 dollars each, we only had to replace 1 but, this vehicle thathas only 60,000 miles and 2 ft.wheels this could easily end up being a 1000.00 fix for front bearing. ps.bearings for 4wd were only $138.00. *ak

Both front wheel bearings have failed under 50,000 miles of wear. dealer was not contacted. *ak consumer called the ac delco company to retrieve parts needed. this was to no avail. consumer was informed that gm and other dealers have first priority to the parts and would be able to buy from the dealer. *jg
