PARKING BRAKE
EA04011GENERAL MOTORS CORP.04/09/200405/10/2005PARKING BRAKE FAILURE05V161000
In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. a total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi is aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed. for additional information, see the attached closing report.

Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

We have a 2002 chevrolet silverado extended cab truck. the tracks that the front seats slide on stick out very far in the back. they are made of metal, and they do not have any guards on them. my four year old son climbed in the back seat and hit his knee on the metal track. it cut his knee. this has happened several times. i have even cut my hand on these tracks when i am cleaning out the truck. i have a 2002 ford explorer, and the tracks have plastic covers over them. chevrolet needs to make some plastic covers to put over these tracks. they are dangerous. i am printing this complaint and mailing it to you, along with pictures of the tracks. i will also submit this over the internet. *ts *jb

Although the truck is rated to tow 9000 lbs the parking brake will not hold my 7000 pound trailer from rolling down the hill forwards or backwards. my 3000 lb boat rolls backwards into the water at a boat launch. the pbrake pedal goes to the floor with little resistance. two different chevy dealers have seen the truck. the first dealer adjusted the brake and it was better, the second said that there was nothing more that they could do. it still rolls with a trailer on it. the dealers said that the low resistance pbrake is a design feature.*ak

In regards to nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000, i live in the western mountains of virginia and i am having the identical problems associated with the above mentioned recall. i don't think gm realize that there is a part of virginia, like west virginia, that gets a lot of chloride on the roads in the winter months. the vehicle has had a couple of near accidents due to the malfunction of the abs system. i have removed the fuse to the system until i have the problem fixed. *jb

Complaint ref # 10089651 on mar 12,2005 i had a failure of the abs brake system that resulted in a complete brake failure! i stopped the vehicle by turning off the ignition. the failure was in a parking lot at slow speed. i had the same type of failure on aug 3,2004. i reported it to the nhtsa at that time. last aug gm ok'd a warranty fix by using service built. # 02-05-006a-(nov 26,2002). at that time there was damage to the front of the vehicle due to running into a fence. after complaining, they agreed to pay for fixing the damage. now back to the present failure. the dealership said the problem this time was the wheel hub assemblies which the abs sensors are attached. contacting gm, i told them i believed the repair should be covered under the warranty even though my mileage was 36,500. they said it would not be covered under warranty because it was 3 months and 500 miles over the warranty. i did not agree with them as i see this as a continuation of last august's problem and that it wasn't fixed correctly at that time. i had the truck fixed and paid the $631 myself. i am contacting you because i believe there is an abs brake problem with the vehicle that is not peculiar to my vehicle but no doubt is widespread. i know you do not have an investigation at this time but i think there should be? the fact that there is a bulletin on it tells me it is happening to other vehicles! my vehicle is a 2002 chey silverado full size pick up. it is not 4 wheel drive and is a c1500. veh id # is 1gcec14w42z1632603. thank you for your help. norman thomas. *jb

My husband and i purchased a 2002 chevy silverado in the fall of 2002. in the fall of 2004, we noticed a knocking noise in the steering column when we would make turns. we had it checked out to find that the intermediate steering shaft was worn. after waiting 6 months to finally receive a phone call from the bill jacobs dealership in joliet, i called and found out that the part had been there and we proceeded to have the replacement made. i called the chevrolet corporation and filed my complaint. fourteen months after the replacement, the new gm part has worn out! i was told by the chev. corp. that i would have to schedule for another test and then they would proceed after i contacted them with the results from the test. the dealership wants to charge us, the consumers, $105.00 to check it out. we do not feel we should pay out this money when we know exactly what the problem is. why should we pay for a faulty part? there should be a recall on this part. *nm

2002 chevy silverado 1500 lt i have a popping or clunking noise that i can hear and feel on the steering wheel. i am concerned that it might be a safety issue and expensive to repair at that.this has been on going for sometime. this noise is very noticable when backing up or moving foward at very slow speed.
TIRES
04/02/2002501/01/2002
The front tires on the outer edge are what i call cupping out. i have been to the dealer 4 or 5 times where i purchased the truck and they have acknowledged that i do have a front end problem. they keep telling me it's the alignment causing the abnormal wear but after 5 or 6 alignments you would think something would either correct or the dealership would would tell me what is wrong with the truck. i went to a different dealership in smyrna appx 9 miles from bill heard about 2 weeks after they aligned my truck and they said the truck was out of alignment. i had to pay for this and this was a rep. from the gm factory telling me what to do. as of 12/2/02 ed boggs the rep said their was nothing else that chevrolet or gm could do. i suggested him give me a truck that was safe to drive or i felt i was safe. bill heard did admit that the wear on 5 tire rotations on the front end was abnormal but was within specs. i gave them a chance and said if you would write me a letter or statement saying that this wear is normal and is not going to affect the normal wear on this truck i will shut up and let it rest. wasn't going to happen! the pulled a print out stating they couldn't find nothing wrong with my truck. i in the meantime have checked a few of the newer trucks ive seen in parking lots and noticed about half the trucks have the same kind of problem so i guess im the only one pursuing the problem. i don't have the money to keep sinking into this truck. on the older trucks i've owned the wear im getting on these tires look like shock or suspension problems but they say no way. so i'm back at square one with abnormal tire wear and no answers and really mad. hopefully you people can help me. thank you george d. vest dt
