Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles. if the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the start position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts.
Consequence SummaryIf the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a relay kit in these vehicles to prevent high current from flowing through the ignition switch. owner notification began march 27, 2002. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020, pontiac at 1-800-762-2737, buick at 1-800-521-7300, or oldsmobile at 1-800-442-6537.

Tl*the contact owns a 1995 chevrolet cavalier. when the vehicle was started, the battery light illuminated on the instrument panel. while driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled. later that day, the contact drove to the dealer and they stated that the thermostat was defective. the mechanic claimed that the vehicle was repaired, but immediately following, the battery light illuminated on the instrument control panel. the vehicle was then taken to a local repair shop and the mechanic stated that the battery was defective and made the replacement. the following day, the contact returned to the dealer due to the same failure, but they could not determine the cause. the vehicle has not been repaired since the most recent failure. the manufacturer has not been notified. the current mileage was 50,000 and failure mileage was 48,000.

Since the end of august 2002, my car has been falling apart. it all started when my air conditioner stopped working. i had freon put back into it, but after a few days, the freon was gone. the mechanic put a dye into the system to see if there was a leak, but he couldn't see any problem. my car has always overheated in traffic. oil is leaking from my head gaskets. now, it is having trouble starting periodically. i was in camden when it wouldn't start. now i'm afraid to drive it. when i start the car, a clicking noise comes from the starter. oh yeah, i had the starter fixed a year ago because of the recall. there is a noise coming from my alternator. i don't know if it is the alternator or the starter that's keeping the car from starting. from what i've seen in my car and the complaints from others, this is not a reliable car. *jb

On 10/2/00 i had my 95 chevy cavalier towed to 2 dealers, bryner chevrolet (they would not accept the warranty) and then to the dealer i purchased the vehicle, ne auto outlet because the car would not start. on 09/25/00 my car began to start with a hesitation. each day thereafter it got worse. on 09/25/00 i replaced the battery thinking that the battery may have been the problem. that did not help. by thursday the problem worsened so i called bryner chevrolet and made an appointment. i could not get an appointment until 10/3/00. on 9/30/00 the car would no longer start at all. on 10/2/00 i had the car towed to bryner and then to ne auto outlet as i stated before. i was told that ne auto outlet could not look at the car until 10/3/00. i received a call at 11:30am from joe didonato at ne that i needed an ignition switch and an alternator. i was told that the bad components were draining the battery. i was also told that i needed a new serpentine belt. i had the serpentine belt replaced twice before at bryner chevrolet on 5sep97 and 6feb98. it seems to be highly unusual that i would need to replace the belt almost every year on a 1995 vehicle with only 27961 miles on it. i don't even drive 5,000 miles a year. i feel the same about having to replace the ignition switch and the alternator/generator. i have had 3 recalls since i purchased the vehicle. hazard lamp, leaking cylinder (head gasket was replaced), and pcm assy. the problem with the belt has been ongoing with noise in the pulley area of the belt. the noise began again a few days after the recalls on the head gasket and pcm assy.

My wife drive this car. it was taken into the dealer 4-5 times to get a stalling problem fixed. during one trip the replaced a head gasket at 77,764 miles on a bulletin from gm. the didnt check the head for defects. the dealer told us gm only let them replace the head gasket. it is now 15 months later and 14,000 miles on it, the head gasket has failed again. gm said it is not covered and the dealership want 1, 100 to fix it. seems to me gm has a problem with bad head gaskets and instead of fixing the head and gasket right the first time, the just change the gasket and when it is out of warrenty stick it to the customer.*ak

This 95 cavalier was taken in to the dealer for recall #99088 concerning the pcm. they performed a vehicle inspection at that time and noted under major service that it has a bad head gasket leak. we have kept it under control using aftermarket stop-leak type products, but it is only a temporary fix. if this is such a common failure, does a recall exist to cover the replacement? i have read about this being a common defect in this vehicle. *ak

Before putting my down payment on this car the salesman assured me that this car ran great i took it for a spin and it was a pretty good car and i even looked under the hood. not even a week later after bringing the car home i was on the highway and a light came on reading that i needed water in the car so i hurried up and tried to make the next exit when all of a sudden out of my steering wheel comes smoke i made the first exit and came to a shell station openend my hood and a hose was busted and antifreeze was leaking out. i called billy bob's and they were nice about having someone pick it up and they sent it to one of there shops and i came back the next day to get my car. the problem was supposedly my fan on the car and they fixed the hose. days later the guage on my car red that the car was still hott so i got it checked out by my mechanic after a thorough look he found that my fan had been riged with a speaker wire and that it needed to be rewired at that point i didn't have much cash so i didn't get it fixed. i took it to billy bob's however and they had someone check it out and the rewired my fan at billy bob's expense. while the mechanics checked out my car they found that my engine had a crack in it and that the work would cost me roughly 800 dollars. after dishing out all of my money to billy bob's for repairs and for my car notes that left me broke so i couldn't get the job done. the mechanics told me to keep water in the car and get the job done asap or my engine will go out. i spoke with billy bob's and asked if they could help but they said no because i still owe them on the transmission job that i had done. i feel like i was taken advantage of because i am woman and they sold me a lemon that car has costs me alot of money and it still runs terrilbly. within the first month of getting this car i had to invest thousands to make it drivable . i just took the salesman's word that i had a good car and that it ran good i didn't realize that i w
