Defect SummaryOn certain passenger vehicles. if the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the start position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts.
Consequence SummaryIf the switch is damaged, a fire could occur in the steering column, even with the engine off and the key removed. the fire could spread to the interior of the car, which could injure occupants or cause damage to adjoining structures.
Corrective SummaryDealers will install a relay kit in these vehicles to prevent high current from flowing through the ignition switch, and check that your car will start with a properly charged battery and, if necessary, replace the ignition switch. owner notification will begin on march 1, 2004. owners who take their vehicles to an authorized dealer on an agreed upon service date and do not receive the free remedy within a reasonable time should contact chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, pontiac at 1-800-620-7668, buick at 1-866-608-8080, or oldsmobile at 1-800-630-6537. customers can also check their vehicle online by going to www.mygmlink.com and entering the vehicle's identification number.

This car will not start.and when it does start it back fires. i have replaced the starter, the flex plate the sensors, and the muffler, and nothing seems to work and no mechanic can tell me whats wrong with. i even went out and bought a car code reader and it says emissions but still no luck.

Purchased used 2000 cavalier in 2006. first problem (which has continued for 5 years) is that the service light will come on when the car is cranked unless the headlights are first turned on. if you turn the headlights off while driving, the service light comes on. it will not go off unless you turn the car off and restart it (with headlights on). second problem is that fuel hand does not reflect accurate amount of gasoline in tank. it goes up and down while driving (with the check gauges light on). or sometimes it is stuck on e or stuck on f regardless of how much fuel is actually present. third problem is that car intermittantly overheats and is always losing coolant. i have replaced thermostat, water pump, & radiator. three different mechanics cannot find a leak in the cooling system (despite pressure testing, compression testing, & block testing). we are baffled why it cannot retain constant coolant levels. this is a very frustrating situation as i am left without reliable transportation.

While drive on the city roads the 2000 cavalier tends to stall when slowing to a complete stop, slowing to turn, and when low speeds. the engine will completely shut down while electrical components such the radio are in tact. also include loss of power steering and power brakes making it difficult to steer out of harms way with many accident near misses. happends mostly when car has not been in use for a period of time then is started up for use.  We bought a used chevrolet cavalier from the year 2000 with an extended warranty (gm certified) for 3 months or 3,000 miles. since the beginning there were 4 problems not yet fixed. 1 - there is a popping noise under the back of the car. dealer (koons chevrolet - withe marsch, md) said he couldn't duplicate. after bringing the car for the 3rd time, he said the brakes were dirty and he cleaned them, but this noise is still here, when starting at a red traffic light for example, or when riding on a rough road. 2 - there is a grinding noise in front when driving. it's stopping when pushing the brake pedal. it's linked with the brakes for sure. the pads are new and the dealer said the rotor makes his noise, but he refused to change it (whereas it's under warranty). he said it's not unsafe. but this noise is coming louder and i feel like a loss of control. 3 - the abs light come on every single day while driving and not braking. the 1st time, the dealer changed the bulb. the 2nd time problem was not solve) he changed the alternator, because my car broke down the day before (no more power at all). he said the alternator putted a low voltage to the abs causing the light to turn on. the problem is not solve. and i need to go back to the dealer. all of these problems have not been solved, and this is the 5th time i am going to the dealer. i think he's playing with me, so that my car won't be under warranty any more, and i would pay to change stuffs in the future. please provide information and support. thank you. *nlm

Battery leaked acid from positive post down into battery box which drained into engine compartment and on to the electrical harness junction which is routed under the battery box. there is no drain tube to drain any acid overflow down under the car. the acid burned through the junction and shorted out the main harness to all the lighting on the front of the car. if this had been at night i would have lost my headlights and turn signals. there is minor damage to torque converter housing and motor mount. i'm waiting now to hear from the dealer as to when the car will be returned to me after the repairs are done, and see if chevrolet will take care of the repairs. it is my belief they need to install a drain tube in the battery box and reroute this harness away from this area. i fear as to what would happen if this had been at night and i was driving down the road at highway speeds. this battery was the one that came with the car. *****dims 11 ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis*****769324. *ak *jb

I am the original owner of the 2000 chevrolet cavalier starting in november 2005 we had the ignition lock cylinder changed due to being unable to start the car. this lasted for about a year when problems started more frequent. we brought the car back to the dealer and he was unable to duplicate the problem. he stated that this is an intermittent problem and they could only find the problem when the car fails to start. it would start for them while it was at the dealership. i contacted gmac and explained the problem. i could not get anyone to technically fine the problem. in essence, this car has an on going problem and it is useless to me because i have gotten stuck with the car at least eight times and had to have the car towed to the dealer at my expense. we would like to resolve this problem as we cannot even sell the car with this problem. *jb

The first time this happened i was driving to work and the fuel injectors were replaced to fix the problem. the next 4 times (all in the same day) i was driving to and from pensacola, florida on interstate 110 and highway 98 and the gas filter and spark plugs were changed. these incidents were in the spring 2003. the dealer informed me in april 2003 that the spark plugs were the problem and they fixed it and said we should be fine. the most recent episode was on highway 20 in niceville, florida. i was driving with my wife and newborn when the car stopped accelerating again and thankfully i was able to pull to the side of the road without getting hit. car stopped accelerating with no warning and was stranded on the interstate and busy highway. most recently the problem cannot be fixed. this car is only 4 years old and i bought it new with keeping the maintence up. as of now the car cannot be started and they have no clue as to what the problem is. i am concerned as this could have happened while on the interstate where i could not get to the shoulder or on the local mile long bridge where there is no place to pull over to. i am just glad my wife and child were not injured this time. *la

I can't tell you the exact date of incident. it was about 2 yrs. ago. the head lights would not stay on. they would go off and on when driving at night. it was only the dim lights. we got a switch and had mechanic put it in. plus a relay. it didn't do any good. i took it to the chevy garage recently. they told me it is the wiring harness. they said a lot of people are having this problem with these cars. it will be expensive to fix. i was wondering if you are aware of this at all. the consequences are driving at night with no lights. please respond. thank you. *jb

1.) leaking battery (acid) caused the electrical harness at the conector under the battery to become deteriated (corroded). 2.) this affected the headlights by cutting off the electrical current and shutting off the headlight. a night time failure could have been very dangerous. 3.)i took the vehicle to a repair station and paid $300.00 to have the problem fixed. the harness was not replaced, only patched because a harness replacement would have been too costly for me. *ak

Battery terminal leaked, and since a lot of wiring is located under the battery, the acid ate the wires that go to the headlights, turn signals, and running lights. my highbeams work, and my drivers side turn signal work. warranty wont cover, they said it was the battery. why have wiring under the battery?

I took my 2000 chevy cavalier to steve's auto care in the city of hawthorne, ca. the symptoms i had were my lights in my dashboard would flash erratically and eventually my car would not start and the check theft system light would come on. steve claimed he fixed the problem and told me i might need a new computer if the problem persisted. when i took my car home, the next day the same symptoms occured again. i took the car back to him the next day and he told me his diagnostic machine was not working and he was waiting for a cd to get the machine started again. hew informed me that when he had my car, all he did was put it on a scanner. he charged me $185.00. a week later the problem persisted again and i took mky car to power chevrolet. they had my car for 3 days and said my car wouldn't start at times and couldn't find the problem. they charged me $95.00. then i took my car to martin chevrolet in torrance, ca and they had my car for 1 1/2 days. they said that my battery terminal as well as 3 ground wires were corroded and they said they fixed the problem. they charged me 122.87. when i took my car home the same day the problem still persisted and i took it back the next day to martin chevrolet. they had my car 2 days and i received a call that nothing was wrong with my car and that they drove the car 10 miles and nothing happened when they had it. they told me that if my car stalls again to not have it started but to bring it to them so they can see what the problem is. no one can find the problem and i know there is a problem because now when the lights in my dash flash.. i smell a little smoke. what in god's name can i do to get this poroblemn resolved!!!???? *ak

First failure was at 24,197 miles. the car began to lose power and would stall during driving. dealer had the car for 21 days, and replaced the switch clusters, ignition switch, reprogrammed body control module, replaced pcm and found burnt 3-4 clutch. at 40,613 miles the engine lost power and stalled again (while on the freeway). this time the engine warning light did not activate, and we had no idea there was another engine problem. the dealer again replaced defective coil and iginition wires. the car is once again beginnig to idle differently, which is a precursor to it stalling. at each failure, we also smelled a burning odor just before the vehicle stalling.*ak
