In a letter dated april 20, 2005, gm notified nhtsa that it had decided that defects that relate to motor vehicle safety exist in certain model year (my) 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series (pbr parking brake system) and my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series (trw parking brake system) pickups with manual transmissions.according to gm, some of these vehicles may have conditions that cause the friction linings to wear to an extent where the parking brake can become ineffective in immobilizing a parked vehicle.gm's action covers an estimated total of 142,585 vehicles.dealers will install a low-force spring clip retainer for vehicles equipped with the pbr parking brake system and install a redesigned parking brake cable assembly on vehicles equipped with the trw parking brake system. a total of 58 non-duplicative complaints were received by odi and gm concerning the approximately 59,000 my 1999-2002 c/k 1500 series pickup trucks with the pbr parking brake system.these included 22 alleged rollaway incidents, resulting in a rate of 38.5 rollaway incidents per 100,000 vehicles.odi is aware of 24 complaints regarding the my 2001-2005 c/k 2500 and 3500 series manual transmission trucks recalled by gm, including 5 alleging rollaway incidents.though the conditions described in gm's letter are also present in the c/k trucks with automatic transmissions, the rollaway rate in those vehicles was similar to those observed in peer vehicles studied by odi in this investigation.this engineering analysis is closed. for additional information, see the attached closing report.
PE03057GENERAL MOTORS CORP.12/08/200304/09/2004PARKING BRAKE FAILURE
Odi opened pe03-057 to assess parking brake ineffectiveness in the subject vehicles.these vehicles are equipped with four wheel disc brakes that incorporate a single-shoe drum-in-hat parking brake independent of the service brakes.complaint and warranty data indicate that the parking brake linings tend to wear out early in the life of the vehicle (at an average of 24 months in service), reducing the parking brake system's torque below that needed to immobilize the vehicle.gm has attributed this accelerated wear to foreign material intrusion and a failure of the brake shoe to properly self-center within its brake drum.effective with the start of my 2003 production, a newer reduced force hold-down clip was introduced to facilitate brake shoe disengagement from the drum surface.this part is also available at the service level for the my 1999-2002 vehicles.gm has indicated that the paking brake is intended to operate in conjunction with the transmission to immobilze parked vehicles, and that in many cases, accelerated parking brake lining wear is caused by rough use, vehicle modifications, and driving with the parking engaged. odi has upgraded the preliminary evaluation to an engineering analysis to gather further information concerning parking brake usage factors and the circumstances surrounding the seventeen reported vehicle crashes.

The automatic locking retractor (alr) is a feature incorporated in the subject vehicle for locking the webbing to properly secure a child safety seat into a vehicle.this pe was opened based on a gm technical service bulletin stating that with certain child safety seats the webbing may not remain locked.there are no complaints in the odi database and only two complaints to gm.gm's instructions state for the final step in using the webbing lock feature to push and pull the child restraint to be sure it is secure. if the alr is not locked, the user would be fully aware of this condition prior to completing proper installation of the child safety seat in this vehicle.this investigation did not uncover any complaints of the alr inadvertently unlocking while the vehicle is in motion.the emergency locking retractor (elr) feature remains available to lock the retractor in a crash.a safety-related defect has not been identified at this time and further use of agency resources does not appear to be warranted.accordingly, this investigation is closed.the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that no safety-related defect exists.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.see attached summary for additional information.

I have a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500 and the tailgate straps broke while i was standing on the tailgate. upon further investigation, it became obvious that both cables had corroded to the point of failure. i presented this to my local dealer and they were happy to sell my replacement parts and wish me the best of luck. this is unacceptable as the replacement parts are no better than the original parts. i am going to have to replace these every other year at $100/set.

I own a 2001 chevy silverado extended cab 4x4, there was a recall around 2005 for the abs engaging at slow speeds. the service was completed in 2006. about 6 months ago, the abs started doing it again. the dealer said they already did the recall service so i need to pay for the repairs this time. i believe that if the original recall service didn't fix the problem, that it should be fixed again. truck has around 104,000 miles on it. the abs started working improperly at about 100,000 miles. i have had no crashes yet because of this.

2001 chevy p/u. previous recall regarding antilock breaking system engaging on dry payment is re-occuring after initial vehicle repair. in my opinnion this is a serious problem and has the potential to cause an accident. dealer probably did minimal repair (temporary fix) which did not address the problem correctly. *nm

The brakes on my 2001 chevrolet silverado went into anit-lock brake mode as i was making a stop on dry pavement coming just short of smashing into a garbage truck. i contacted chevrolet and was told no recalls on my vehicle since it is not located in canada or some states listed in the us. they have said it is a recall on failing anti-lock sensors that have rust from salt, but minnesota is not one of the states. we don't use salt on roads up here during the winter? what a joke. *nm

2001 chevrolet 1500 ext. cab 4wd truck abs system activates at low speed. the incident occured in a parking lot as the truck was pulling into a parking space. the abs system activiated and there was a complete loss of breaking power. the truck hit the car in the parking space opposite the truck. upon inspection of the truck, the front rotors were almost completely absent of a usable wear surface on the inside of the rotor, the external side of the rotor did not exhibit the same probelm. new rotors were installed with new pads at owner's expense. abs activation at low speed then still occurred. i purchased a subscription for the alldata website to retreive applicable service bulletins. the service bulletin lists the wheel speed sensor as the possible fault. upon examination, the sensor also had the same rust problem as the rotor. the sensers will also be replaced a owner's expense ($110/per sensor). the was no mention of any rotor problems in the bulletin. a 2001 vehicle with 85,000 miles should not have the rotor damage that existed. i have saved the rotors as an example. also, the abs activation's complete lack of breaking power, beyond what is expected in normal abs activation circumstances, make me luckly to have hit another vehicle and not a person.

I own a 2001 silverado 4x4 and there is nothing but problems from the brakes. i had to replace the rear brakes at 30000 miles because of a poor steel which caused the rotors to flake and pit apart which in turn caused failure of the rear brakes. my service manager at the gm dealer told me to replace the rotors with after market because they are of better quality and cheaper. after over $400 for the parts plus labor, the brakes are now functioning. then 4 months later i come to find out that my abs tend to come on when i slow to a stop, they activate at approximately 5mph and below. they do this on any surface at any given time. this has caused me to brake further into intersections and crosswalks as the abs grab and release. i take it to the dealer and they tell me that there is a service bulletin out to fix this. i will need to spend more $ and hope to have decent brakes. i am getting very fed up with the problems on this vehicle. *ak

I run a car dealership and i want to file a complaint about the two cables on chevrolet full size pickups that secure the tailgate on 99-02 models. i have seen hundreds of these trucks where the cables have failed and broke. there is no way that those cables are strong enough to keep from breaking with a little added weight such as a child or an adult. they are as dangerous of a design as i have ever seen. plus, i am tired of paying for these cables on every truck that comes in to my lot for resale. they are way to expensive to replace. a cable that should cost $4 or $5 cost over $30. gm is getting rich on the replacement parts of these cables and they know it. something needs to be done about this and if you investigate this matter i am 100% sure you will agree too.*ak
