My car shut off while driving out of a parking lot a couple of days ago. everything shut down. i couldn't even brake. i was able to put the gear in park and restart it just fine. however this is the fourth time this has happened. the last time being on the george washington bridge. the very first time was 2 months after i purchased this car. i assumed it was because i went over a speed bump that was larger than normal. the second time i went over a pothole. the third time was on the highway. so i had a mechanic look at it and he stated that i could be the alternator. this was about 2-3yrs after purchase. however my time was very limited. i live in md but i work in new york so i spend a lot of time there and leave my car at home. so i haven't had a chance to get it fixed. with this last incident i decided to search the internet and it turns out that i am not the only one with this issue. i found it funny that there were many others with the same or similar problem. i put in a search for cobalt shutting off while driving and found a couple of sites describing similar issues. this last incident reminded me of how dangerous this could be. i had my 4 yr old niece in the backseat and the exit of the parking lot was on a hill. feeling the car rolling back and not being able to brake would surely be considered a safety issue. on a side note i did have my car examined for the recall i was given notice about. this was completed last year. nothing abnormal was reported.

I was driving on the highway at 75-80 mph when the engine suddenly stopped. reduced engine speed and engine disabled warnings scrolled across the illuminated on the instrument control panel. after pulling over to the shoulder, i was able to restart the car and continue driving without further incident. prior to this, i noticed that the vehicle's rpms dropping and then nearly stalling when slowing down at traffic lights or stop signs. i took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the throttle body and ecm. the car ran fine for a couple of weeks and has just recently started again with the early symptoms of nearly stalling at stop signs and traffic lights. i have not yet taken the car back to the dealer, but when i called them they said they probably wouldn't be able to tell anything without some kind of error message.

My daughter drives a 2005 cobalt. on 8-10-2009 she was driving on a two lane road with a speed limit of 55 mph when her car shutoff and she lost steering ability. she crossed the oncoming lane on a blind curve and stopped in a driveway. if there had been a car coming toward her in the oncoming lane she would have been severely injured at a minimum. the chevrolet dealer said he had never had never seen that happen. the dealer replaced the ecm and put the pcm caused a short. *tr

#1 i brought it back because steering wheel always was to the left even though i was going straight. dealer said it was fine, i complained to customer service and then dealer said they fixed it. when going straight the steering still looks left. #2 air conditioning not working, #3 liquid coming out of vents #4 cricket noises out of passenger side dash area. i was told air conditioning was fine, no cricket noises and it was normal for fluid to come out of vents. i brought the car back again said a/c is not fine i asked them if it could be some sort of filter (i am no mechanic) but it was. they had car all day, went to pick it up but they said dash was apart because they were fixing the problem with the fluid coming out of the dash (and i said i was told there was no problem) they had the car for the weekend. they tried to charge me for the filter and i said i would not pay for it because there was problems with that ac and defroster etc since day one. they took out the filter and put in an old dirty filter that did not come from my vehicle as the guy from the chevy dealership in malden said he found it in the trash, (has made my daughter sick). #5 while driving the car i was getting off of the highway into a rest area and the car just died, there was no power steering no brakes etc. the key was in the switch and it was not off. i started the car up again. #6 the electrical didnt work, they fixed that. i have contacted chevy customer service on several occasions and they say they will check into it etc and call me back, but they never do. i want them to fix the steering wheel, fix the car stalling out for no reason (we could have been killed) and put in a new filter not someone elses dirty filter. i don't trust the malden dealership. i have brought the car to the dealership on at least 7 occasions most of which they say nothing wrong. *nm

First it was the engine stall due to faulty fuse box which they fixed. then there was the sun roof cap which fell of twice and they attempted to fix four (4) times. both which are under the cobalts tsbs i think. now it's the ses light with a p0171 dtc code or the air fuel mixture is off. i took it in three (3) times and on the final one they said they have no solution and they cant do anything about it. it is currently under investigation by gm not only in the 2005-2006 chevy cobalt, the 2005-2006 pontiac pursuit, and the 2005-2006 saturn ion. all which have the 2.2l ecotec l61 engine. it troubles me that they say they cant do anything about it and to just keep bringing it in when light comes on. that is truly a pathetic answer to this problem. they are costing me time and money and this is no way to run a business. this is clearly an issue they cant solve and that is affecting 3 different cars. there was nothing done to fix the defect except turn off the check engine light, no other repairs have developed for this defect in gm's vehicles. *jb
ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING - COOLING SYSTEM

Bought a new 2005 chevy cobalt. the car had serious air conditioning leaking problems right away that took over a year to solve. we were about to go lemon law on the car when chevy came out with a service notice and got the leak solved. the car then had a headlight that would fill up with water and short out the head light. the dealer told me to drill a hole in the bottom of the headlight case and the water would leak out. the dealer told me to do this!!! the car recently started to have problems with the odometer jumping around while your driving. while that's happening the power steering locks up as the car is being driven. it happened the first time with my 22 year old daughter driving the car to school doing 65 on i95. scared her and she had to try get the car over three lanes to the side of the road. she was able to do it and after restarting the car, the steering was working again. it took two weeks for it to happen again, this time on a side road as she is not allowed to drive it on the highway anymore. she is a student and needs to get to college. we have contacted chevy and they tell us it's not under recall and it's going to cost between $600- $1200 dollars. it could either be the powersteering motor or the steering column. they won't know until they get in to the work. i looked on line and found a lot of other people with the same problem in the 05-06 model. this car needs to be recalled as the problem is going to kill someone on the road. the expense is both unnecessary and a burden in these tough times. my child is a student and does not need to shoulder this burden because of the bad engineering by chevy. i know they are bankrupt and this is a burden we should not have to take. some one is going to die! *tr

I have had my 2005 chevy cobalt since july 2005. at 800 miles i had it serviced for a leak in the passenger floorboard. it was in the shop 5 times before they found a fix. next was the lights flashing on the dashboard, specifically the check engine, brake and high beam lights. then the heater would not blow so it was in the shop to have that fixed. then the reverse lights stopped working and there is condensation in the headlights. now, two days ago, my power steering light comes on and it becomes very hard to steer. i almost had an accident when i couldn't turn fast enough. when you turn the car on and off it works again temporarily. i will be taking it to the shop again, but at this point it has 50,000 miles and is out of warranty. very disappointed with the quality of this car!! *tr

Three months after replaceing the radiator in my car from hitting a raccoon. i started the car and smoke came from the exaust. took the car back to the dealership on friday. on the following monday i got a call saying we can not find anything wrong and drove the car home. the next morning i started the car and smoke came fron the exaust again, the same thing happend after work except the car started after turning the key a few times. the same thing happend the next two days it didn't want to start and after it did, it smoked for approximatly 10 minutes. that friday morning was no different and the same with leaving from work untill i got 12 miles from away when the temperature gage came on, so i took it back to the dealership. there i talked to a different mechanic and told him what was going on and in less then a minute he told me what it was probably a cracked head on the engine. the following monday and further inspection he was right in saying it was the head and needs to be sent out for repair. now they are not willing to fix this problem saying that it is non warranty and we are stuck with all costs.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. she stated that while driving at speeds of 40 mph over a railroad track, the vehicle stalled without warning. within a few seconds, the power steering warning light illuminated and flashed across the instrument panel. she was able to restart the vehicle moments later and took the vehicle to the dealer. the dealer replaced the power steering column due to electrical failures. the repairs were covered by her factory warranty. the repairs did not correct the failure and the problem persisted. the vehicle was taken back to the dealer where they replaced the power steering column a second time. the failure occurred again and the power steering column was replaced a third time. she also stated that most of the electrical components on the vehicle had failed; upon opening the driver's door, the horn would blow. the power locks would not operate, the electrical trunk release would not operate and the catalytic converter also failed. the catalytic converter was replaced under warranty. there were no additional power steering failures after the third repair, however the steering wheel would feel hard at times. there were no recalls for any of the failures. the failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 79,000.

While traveling at highway speeds (~65 mph) the car has shut off 4 times. each time car behaved the same way, as if the key had been removed: the engine stopped, instrument panel dials went to 0, lights turned off. radio stayed on (as it would if the car was turned off). the shut offs were sudden: there were no warnings (lights, sounds, vibrations) before shut off. i was able to coast/brake and pull to the side of the road, shift to park and restart the car each time. the first incident was in july 2008 approximately 100 miles into a trip. the second three incidents happened in about a 30 minute time span on the same trip in mid october. i took the car to the chevy dealership after the october incidents and they could not reproduce the problem. they performed a computer update. i had them check the wiring in january 2009 and they could not find any problems. the clock radio resets to 12:00 (when i turn on the car, not during driving) about once every 3 months since i bought the car in 2005 - i'm not sure if this problem is related. the car is an automatic 2005 cobalt, 4 doors with about 35000 miles. *tr

Same thing brand new 2005 and it has done this to me about 6 times now and stranded me at night even for half an hour before it would restart and the dealership keeps saying they fixed it and last time they say they reprogrammed it even but it just happened to me again late last night ... power steering becomes hard and service light pops on as the engine stalls out on the freeway then it will not restart for a bit then it seems ok but it keeps happening again to me another time. *ak

My 2005 chevy cobalt sedan randomly shuts off while driving. so far it has happened about 6 times. the first time was a few months ago. i was driving at a speed of about 30mph making a left turn crossing a very busy lane of oncoming traffic when the car just shut off. the radio was still on but if i pressed on the gas, nothing. i had to put the car in park, shut off the ignition and then restart it. it immediately started back up. i called the dealership right away and was told that because no warning lights came on they wouldn't be able to trace the problem and hopefully it was a one time thing. well then about a month later it happened again. the dealership told me to wait about a week and call back, well within a week it happened again so i called and told them i was bringing it to them. when i brought the car in they installed a flight recorder and sent me on my way. about a week later the car shut off again so i pressed the button on the flight recorder and brought it back to the dealership. the mechanics informed me that the flight recorder did not work because they forgot to put something else on my car at the time of the installation in order to make the recorder work and wanted me to bring the car back to have the recorder re-installed. i refused and told them i would bring the car back but they needed to keep it until they figured out the problem. on my way back to the dealership the car shut off again while going 65mph on the highway. the dealership had the car for about a week and claimed it was fixed for sure. they said they found the problem and replaced the ignition switch and power train relay. well i have now had my car back for two weeks and as of last night it happened again. i called the dealership and told them to have the car towed because i refuse to drive it. at this point i do not want the car and have no faith in them repairing it. the car should be recalled before there is a fatality. *tr

We purchased a 2005 chevrolet cobalt (ls) in december, 2005. starting in january 2006, we noticed that the engine light goes on and off and we had the chevy dealer whom we purchased car from check it. they told us that the engine is fine and it happens to many cobalt that the engine light will go on sometimes without any reason. we called chevrolet and we were told that they were aware of the problem but have no solution to it. we were asked to keep driving the car with engine light on. we feel very uncomfortable driving a car with engine light on. we would not know if there is really nothing wrong with the car. chevrolet refused to take any action regarding to this matter. we don't know where to seek further help on this incident. there is currently 6000 miles on the car and the engine may be fine at this moment. but since the engine light is not working properly, we would not know if something really happens in the future. we don't feel safe but nowhere to seek help. *jb

 (1) there have been no problems with the car (2005 chevy cobalt sedan) until 9/24/05. the car stalled once this morning and then completely shut down without warning. both events happened after he took his foot off the accelerator so he could slow down and exit the freeway. no warning lights came on. (2) my husband thought he was going to die. he could not steer the car, the brake pedal went mushy, and the entire system shut down. there were no cars around him so he just slid until the car stopped on its own in some bushes. (3) he got to a phone and we called roadside assistance, they towed the car to the dealership. *jb

The check engine light came on so i took the vehicle straight to the dealership. they said it was a history code and not a big deal, so they reset it. after leaving the dealership it came back on so i went to a different dealership. they said the same thing and said they don't know why it is coming back on. *tr

We purchased our 2005 chevrolet cobalt in mid december. in the middle of january we noticed that the air conditioner was not blowing cold air. dealership replaced the air conditioner compression valve. approximately one week later the vehicle began to display the check engine light and read power less reduced then ,we began to have difficulty accelerating. the gas pedal became stiff. the dealearship replaced the air conditioner compression valve once again. again the problem surfaced about a week later. the same part was replaced once again ,and an appointment was made for the following tuesday to drop the vehicle off for further investigation. dealership discovered a faulty wiring harness causing the problem. we were then told that this was an engineering problem with the vehicle. proceedings are underway to replace the vehicle with another car. *ak
