A hose from the fuel tank to the evap canister, came off allowing explosive gasoline vapors to enter the air. this hose is pressed on with no clamp holding the hose in place on the fuel tank. there is a positive lock on the evap canister side of the hose, but nothing holding the hose to the fuel tank. the new fuel tank, (tank and hose one item), also has no clamp at the fuel tank. in addition to allowing explosive vapors into the air, the cost of the repair is huge. the tank assembly, (the hose and fuel tank are one item), is $500, plus installation. chevy and gm were notified and i was told, the parts are off the vehicle and nothing will be done about this. to find this defect, the parts , (tank), must be removed from the vehicle. the car has 45000 miles and has never been in a crash or had any damage to it. this hose has no tension on it, just the lack of a clamp allowing it to come loose. the gasoline vapors escaping from the tank in an enclosed area, like a garage, could lead to an explosion and fire, (i'm a retired firefighter). damage to the environment by escaping gasoline vapors also occurs, (that's why the hose is there in the first place). this negligence in the design on the part of gm could be corrected with a simple low cost clamp on the hose. this defect causes the consumer to spend a large amount of money needlessly, exposes the environment to gasoline vapor damage and could potentially explode, killing someone. please look into this issue. *tr

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was returned to the dealer five times due to intermittent power steering failure and electrical problems. the steering wheel locked suddenly twice while driving, at various speed. the wheel locked on numerous occasions while the vehicle was stopped. each time the power steering light illuminated on the dash during the failure. the wheel unlocked after the engine was shut down and restarted four times. the following electrical problems occurred intermittently, all the gauges fluttered, the fuel gage showed an inaccurate reading, and the emergency brake light illuminated while driving. on one occasion the dealer replaced the power steering housing, but this did not remedy the problem. on all other occasions the dealer completed diagnostic testing, but was unable to determine the cause of the problems. the consumer stated the gas tank was full of gas, however the low fuel illuminated on the dash. the radio malfunctioned twice. updated 04/06/06. *jb

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE - STORAGE

While driving home a 2005 chevy cobalt, we ran over a small rock that had fallen from a truck in front of us ( about 8 in diameter). we heard a banging and tearing noise, then the engine went dead. after several attempts to restart, we exited the cobalt to find fuel gushing from underneath the vehicle. we had our 3 children make a run for it, grabbed our possessions, followed the kids, and called the fire department from a safe distance. fortunately we, (and other motorists) were not injured. in 25 years of driving, we had never seen anything like this. the firemen on the scene said they had never seen a small rock tear open a fuel tank at that slow a speed before. the sheriff echoed their comments, along with the fact he had never seen a fuel tank like that before, particularly the fact that it did not have a bladder. i'm not well versed in auto mechanics. i'm just happy my family is alive. take this as a warning - perhaps the protective measures chevy took for the fuel tank in a rear collision left it vulnerable in other areas. i don't think this is the first and last time this will happen, and hopefully a recall will take place before someone dies from this flaw.

I purchased the vehicle new and there has been problems with the fuel gauge not registering full when it is filled up. sometimes it goes to the 7/8 mark and sometimes it doesn't even go to there. they told me that it was a programming problem , and there should be an update for the computer. i took it in for the update and apparently it was not fixed. also, the fan motor on the vent controls only works on high. i have had the car in to the dealer twice for this issue.*ak
