My car repeatedly go through times of fits. these fits include losing power steering, power steering chime, traction control chime, clicking behind the radio, spinning spedometor, gas guage fails, jerking or hiccupping as one person described it, ocasional stalling. my car will drive fine for weeks, likes its new even, then all of a sudden it has a fit and this goes on for days. this started when my car was a year or two old. i have taken it to the dealer a total of 8 times. early on when the car was younger it would seem to be repaired only do start this problem again a year later. now that the car is older and not under warrenty i have quit taking it as i do not beleive it will help. they do not seem to know how to correct this problem. they are rude to me.

Why isn't there a recall for the 2005 cobalt? this happened shortly after i purchased the vehicle! why do you have the recall only for 2009, it should be for 2005 and all models affected, regardless of the year! just picking one year is not accurate for this type of issue. this need to be fixed asap! please and thank you! transmission shift position sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect, and fmvss 114, theft protection and rollaway prevention. on some of these vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may not be fully engaged. if the clip is not fully engaged, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. with this condition, the drive could move the shifter to park and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in park.

If there has been the same recall on 2009 chevelot cobalt, it should be for 2005! i can tell you of 3 other people with the same issue. this is not safe for cars to be on the road with this issue. transmission shift position sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect, and fmvss 114, theft protection and rollaway prevention. on some of these vehicles, the transmission shift cable adjustment clip may not be fully engaged. if the clip is not fully engaged, the shift lever and the actual position of the transmission gear may not match. with this condition, the drive could move the shifter to park and remove the ignition key, but the transmission gear may not be in park.

At multiple times, the driver side door will not open from either the inside or the outside latch. this seems to happen mainly when it gets very cold outside. when i pull the latch it doesn't feel like it catches anything inside the door. this problem will go on for a couple weeks, and then suddenly the latch will begin to work again.

For no apparent reason and without any warning (no check engine light or anything), i received an engine power reduced warning and my car's engine completely shut down while i was completing a turn in a busy intersection. luckily, i was able to coast to safety and park in a nearby parking lot. the car refused to turn back on for several minutes. once it did, i drove my car to my office and was able to start it and drive it without further incident for several weeks. then, without warning it happened again while i was on the freeway and has been happening intermittently since then. when i took it to the dealership, they claimed they are not aware of other people having this problem, but i have found numerous complaints and reports from other owners online, so i'm not convinced of their honesty or concern regarding this matter. they say they *think* the problem might be the master computer or at least that is their best guess (their words, not mine). i will be replacing it later this week. unfortunately, i'm not confident the repair will fix the problem. after gm's repeated and explicit denial of the power steering problem and how long it took them to admit there even was one, i have decided to appeal to you. at present, when driving this car, i am a danger to myself and everyone else who might be around me on the road...as are all other cobalt drivers. please, investigate this matter before someone has this happen at the wrong place and the wrong time and someone gets seriously hurt, or worse. gm knows it created a car with a faulty electrical system which could result in catastrophic failures and they need to take responsibility for it and fix it. just because they stopped making the car, does not absolve their responsibility to make them safe for everyone on the road. *tr

On several prior occasions, the key would become stuck in the ignition. to solve this problem, i would simply shift from park to drive, cycling through the gears. this would allow the key to be removed from the ignition. i figured it was a small problem with the automotic gear shifter, it may not be fully enganging in park. this situation carried on for approximately two (2) years, whenever needed i would repeat the cycling of gears to disengage the key. however, a few days ago the key became stuck in the ignition and the previous solution would no longer dislodge the key. i found the switch under the steering wheel to remove the key, but the car is inoperable due to the key becoming stuck in the ignition cylinder on a constant basis. upon doing some research, i have come to the conclusion that is a common problem with automatic transmission equipped cobalts. the shifter is not fully enganging a micro shifter when engaging in park, causing the key to remain in the ignition. it has come to the point where i can not remove the key, even while using the switch under the steering wheel.

Tl- the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. the contact stated that the key could not be removed from the ignition. the contact was able to start the engine and shut the engine off, but the key would have to remain in the ignition. the vehicle was shifted into park and the contact attempted to wiggle the key several times but to no avail. neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure. the failure mileage was 65,000. kmj

Took my car to dealer because of bad clunking in front end. they replaced the bushings (while under warranty). now (58000 mi) i am having the same problem and the clunking is much worse?! seems to be an ongoing problem with these cobalts. seems there should be some kind of recall with all these complaints before there is a horrific accident!!!! also (i have the 2 door) there is a constant problem with the doors not working! all the sudden you try to get in and the handle moves but does not open! i would have to enter/exit on passenger side! i have had parts to this replaced several times now. this too could also be very dangerous if in an accident! i am still happy with my car but not with the same ongoing issues that could lead to potential disaster!

My car shut off while driving out of a parking lot a couple of days ago. everything shut down. i couldn't even brake. i was able to put the gear in park and restart it just fine. however this is the fourth time this has happened. the last time being on the george washington bridge. the very first time was 2 months after i purchased this car. i assumed it was because i went over a speed bump that was larger than normal. the second time i went over a pothole. the third time was on the highway. so i had a mechanic look at it and he stated that i could be the alternator. this was about 2-3yrs after purchase. however my time was very limited. i live in md but i work in new york so i spend a lot of time there and leave my car at home. so i haven't had a chance to get it fixed. with this last incident i decided to search the internet and it turns out that i am not the only one with this issue. i found it funny that there were many others with the same or similar problem. i put in a search for cobalt shutting off while driving and found a couple of sites describing similar issues. this last incident reminded me of how dangerous this could be. i had my 4 yr old niece in the backseat and the exit of the parking lot was on a hill. feeling the car rolling back and not being able to brake would surely be considered a safety issue. on a side note i did have my car examined for the recall i was given notice about. this was completed last year. nothing abnormal was reported.

I was in town with my 5 month old baby and my door handle messed up. i had parked, and exited the car and went around to passenger side of car to open the door and get my son but the door wouldn't open. i locked and unlocked the car door and it was still stuck. it was as though the door handle wasnt latched to anything. it was just there, it wouldn't do anything. i beat and bang on the door for almost an hour until the passenger side door finally opened. the driver side door still won't open, inside or out. this car needs to be recalled. i have read of many others with same problem. my child who is only 5 months old was screaming and i couldn't get to him. this could have been very tragic had it been hot outside. someone needs to do something about this!!

We just bought a used 2005 chevy cobalt from the chevy dealership. the day we picked the vehicle up the car shut off and would not start. we took it back the dealership said it was the kill switch. we took the car back home with us. the same day, driving to another location the car shuts down while driving. two months later, the car still keeps shutting down while driving at any given time. i work at a mechanic shop and i have many mechanic friends. no one can explain why it keeps shutting off. i have researched on the internet for a while; many people with the same problems with no solution. this vehicle has low mileage and most complaints in forums with the same issue have the same problem with low miles or happening from first of purchase. do not know how to fix the problem. was told that the car must do this while mechanic is driving in order to try to repair the problem. no diagnosis can be made. i feel this problem will cause an accident; was close to getting hit today when car shut off in the middle lane of traffic. no parts purchased at this time.

Last year, my 05 cobalt experienced power steering failure and concurrent hard shifting between gears upon power steering notice of failure. i took my car in to the dealer to be fixed in accordance with the associated recall. last week, one year later, i have experienced the same exact problems again. the car will chime and report power steering failure. if driving above 15 mph, there isn't much to notice regarding power steering, however, if changing speed requires your car to shift up or down to a different gear, the car will jerk (hiccup) heavily, as if an inexperienced driver was trying to drive a car with a manual transmission. the car has 46,000 miles on it and this is clearly not my problem. please insist that gm issue a recall with a real remedy for this issue.

Power steering light comes on, power steering goes out, all display lights begin going off and on, speedometer needles go crazy, clicking noise in dash, car sputters when stopping and jerks real hard when beginning to resume driving after stopping. all of these things happen at the same time, not always just off and on, never know when its going to happen. had recall on power steering assist motor, had that replaced at 70,558 miles, starting having same problems again. had steering column, shaft and link replaced at 73,117 miles. car seemed ok for about a month and then again at 73,900 miles same problems are happening again. contacted gm, was told the recall was done so anything else that happens now is my responsibility. have seen 100's of other comments from colbalt owners having the same problem with vehicle and gm. there is obviously more of a problem with these vehicles than just the power steering assist motor. something more should be looked into and done with this issue. it is and or can be a very dangerous problem when occurring (steering going out at anytime) like i've seen on many comments from others, does someone have to die before something is done about this problem? gm states that this vehicle has a 5 star safety rating but yet they don't want to fix a problem as serious as this. i like many others can't afford to keep fixing this problem just to keep having it re-occurr. i had to pay out $950 a month ago and like i said before am now having the same problems. i had to borrow money to have the first repairs done and have no way to have it done this time (can't afford it) so now again like i've seen many others comment i have no choice but to drive around in a vehicle thats steering could and will go out at anytime. if there is anything i can do to find out or have done to fix this problem, please let me know. a very concerned and scared driver. thank you!

*please note...the incident date is approximate. we have a 2005 chevrolet cobalt sedan that was involved in the recall for the power steering motor intermittent power steering failure. we had never had a problem with the steering prior to the recall being performed. after the recall was performed, we began having trouble with intermittent power steering failure - plus additional failures. upon start-up, we have experienced no power steering, and had to shut the vehicle off and retry numerous times before the power steering returns. in addition to loss of power steering, we have experienced the following electrical problems: traction control light illuminating random clicking of the brake safety interlock relay / actuator (without touching the brake). check engine light transmission going into limp mode...slamming into gear when shifting from park - or improper shifting while driving. random dash guage failure random failures of the driver's information center - flashing, etc. this was initially happening only upon start-up...but started happening while driving as well - nearly leading to an accident while my wife was driving on a busy urban street. she was fortunately able to drift into the turn lane and come to a stopmto avoid a collision and likely serious injury to herself and others, as it was vitually uncontrollable. in addition to the loss of power steering (while driving), the transmission also went into limp mode, causing very hard shifting and much difficulty in drivability. this has also happened while i was driving the vehicle. i am 6'3, 260lbs., and i was struggling to control the vehicle. i have also been in contact with other cobalt owners with the exact same set of symptoms. it is clear that the motor replacement was not sufficient to repair the problem, and - in some cases - may be leading to further problems as in our case. this vehicle is very dangerous!

I recently purchased used my 2005 chevy cobalt and sunday a week after having the car gave me problems. according to the carfax report the power steering was replaced in april assuming do to the recall. but i got in my car and the power steering read across the the mileage area and chimed. very little noticeable issues do to steering but when i came to a stop light it vibrated really bad and then everytime it shifted(its an automatic) to another gear higher or lower it would act like it had shifting problems. also when i would come to stops at a light or stop sign it would vibrate really bad to the point where it seemed like it would stale out. it had only stalled once. i just hope someone can resolve this issue because it seems like tons of people are having this issue.

I have a 2005 chevy cobalt. 59000 miles on it. had the whole power steering problem right after i financed the car, the recall that went out in march was replaced immediately, 3000 miles later (i drive about 2500-3000 a month) power steering started acting up again, took it to a mechanic, it wouldn't act up for him, he said to bring it back when it was actually acting up. it worked fine for a few weeks, happened again, check engine light came on, took it in still wouldn't give him any problems, mechanic advised to have chevy check the power steering motor recall to see if maybe they replaced it with a bad motor. called chevrolet to get the power steering recall looked at again to see if maybe the replacement was a bad one..... chevy dealership looked at it, checked the car and said he didn't know what was going on with it, and that he could change a few things.... power steering column, new battery...etc. $1000 dollars + worth of work and not knowing the whole time if it was even the problem. worked ok again for a couple more weeks and now it doesn't want to shift in and out of gears and gain speed on the highway, check engine light came on, took it to a mechanic as soon as it happened, he took it out to test drive and the darn thing wouldn't act up on him. this car is a lemon, even the idiotic chevrolet people at the dealership don't know what it is going on with the car and don't know how to fix it. i just want the thing off my hands, don't want to have to pay anymore into it, it's unrealiable and unsafe.

Approximately 15 occurences of warnings lights ramdoming going off. such as the power steering and traction control. the power steering had been repaired over a year ago so, it was not associated to the recall that just now was issued. after that it started happening more often and more warning lights would light up -- for no apparent reason. it would never happen when i took it to the shop. then everything went haywire one night coming home from work at 1 am. dials and lights went wild and the car was heistating, the gear shift was clicking and the car was slamming in and out of gear. i took it to my local chevy dealership and they could not find anything wrong. they told me maybe my fuel injectors needed cleaning!!!! one month later and it happened again. this time they said it was my body control module. quoted a price of $619 and it turned out to be $729!!!! i have checked on line and have found mulitple comments from other cobalt owners who have experienced the same problem. this if very dangerous and chevy needs to recall the part!!!!

2005 chevy cobalt, while my daughter was driving this car, she lost power, motor was reving, rpm going up, then engine light came on. took to 2 chevy dealerships, 12 codes came up, but was told none would make it do that... help!! what if she is on highway and loses power, someone can be killed...

I own a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. gm did replace the power steering motor, but i still do not have the power steering back. the service company told me that it was the power steering module that has gone bad and it is not covered by the recall or the warranty. it is causing my vehicle to jump and sputter. when this occurs i loose all my safety gauges like my spedometer, gas, etc. the vehicle even cuts off completly when i come to a stop at intersections. what do i do now? oh yeah, i even had the transmission worked to make sure it wasn't that either.

My car is a 2005 cobalt chevrolet. twice in 3 months a hear a chime and the steering goes from automatic to manual and puts me in harms way while driving. i have to turn the car off and then on again to fix the problem. the problem scared me today while driving 65 mph on i95 while raining. the steering went out and i had to manually control my vehicle and almost crashed before i was able to pull over. i contacted chevy customer service the week before and they said it is a problem and a recall notice will be sent to me soon. please help because i really don't want to crash and chevy said it may be a while before i get my recall notice and they know how to fix it. *tr

Two an a half years ago my vehicle started to just turn off randomly while driving, it started about every 4-5 months then about a year ago it started happening about twice a month. i brought my vehicle to the shop and they stated that the problem was the fuel pump. it was replaced since then. i have not had a problem with the vehicle turning off in the middle of me driving. now february 6, 2010 i was driving and the power steering randomly went out. sometimes if i turn my car off and restart it will have power steering again sometimes it does not help. this has been occurring for 2 days now and it happened yesterday 3 times and today 3 times. i was driving through the mountains and almost caused a couple of collisions because of this. i plan on going to the shop tomorrow and i will keep any parts they replace. *tw

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet cobalt. while driving approximately 70 mph with the cruise control activated, the vehicle suddenly flipped over three times. the weather conditions were dry. due to shock, all the contact could remember was climbing out of the vehicle. she was informed by witnesses at the scene that the vehicle was traveling at a high speed and flipped over while exiting off of the freeway. the contact sustained a fractured vertebrae, internal bruising, and a cracked tailbone. a police report was filed. a couple of months prior to the failure, the contact stated that the power steering was difficult to maneuver and the warning indicator was illuminated. the vehicle was not serviced at that time. the contact had previously taken the vehicle to get a rod inspected, which was located between the brake and the steering. she was informed that it was not a serious issue at that time. the current and failure mileages were 60,000.
