Steering wheel became very difficult to turn while on a freeway entrance ramp. fortunately i was able to retain control of vehicle. no further issues until 8 days later when again the vehicle become very difficult to steer. i consider the malfunction of the power steering unit to be a dangerous issue. i called the gm help line 2/23/2013 and was told the vehicle was recalled at 54,000 miles to address the steering issue and any needed repairs at this time will be at my expense.

I was driving home one rainy day, about 45mph, dash lit up to shift. i looked and i was already in 5th. next second everything on dash went out. no speedometer, no shift light, no mileage or trip meter, nothing. only thing on dash that works is tach and digital display says power steering. already had an appointment for recall work for power steering assist motor, thought that maybe that was what was wrong so i kept appointment. when got back from dealer, they tell me they replaced power steering assist motor and they had noticed the dash display and had done scan and it showed the power steering motor is went out! bought this car for my daughter, to drive back in forth to school, scared for her to drive it the 90 miles a day she drives to college. thought this was just an isolated case but after checking online, i see that this is a major defect in these cars. something needs done before someone gets hurt or killed. *tr

While driving my 2006 chevy cobalt when i lost power steering which made it difficult to control my car around sharp turns due to the fact that i was not expecting the power steering to just go out on me like that. this type of problem is very dangerous especially when it happens while driving. i have already had my power steering fixed once due to a past recall and here i am again having problems with the same thing again! *tr

My wife and grandson were in the car when power steering came on the dash. it caught her attention but didn't know really what had happend till she tried to turn and almost went in the ditch. we took it to the dealer and 700.00 paid to have the problem continue to reoccure. it comes and goes and if it is not a problem when we take it to the dealer they don't know what to do. all they say is it is in the wireing issue and think we should buy something else. i didn't know about all these problems till it occured to us. we bought the car new and have like the 2006 cobalt but this is the first i have heard they have a problem with the powersteering or wireing to the electric assist to the power steering. i am told they had a fix back in 2010 are we still qualified to have our car fixed under that recall. my son is going in the army in a couple weeks we wanted to let him have this car after he gets stationed somewhere but we cann't give it to him when we are not trusting its safety.

I purchased a brand new 2006 chevy cobalt and haven't had problems until recently (2012). my problem started in february 2012 when heading to a doctor's appointment. started the car and the power steering light came on. started pulling car off of parking lot where i live and the car had a jerking/bucking sensation to it and then shut off on me. had car towed to chevy dealer and the car wouldn't duplicate the same problem so i got the car back. 9 days later i go out again and the car starts with the same problem - power steering light on; jerking sensation and the speedometer dropped from 35 mph to 0. car went back to chevy dealership. again, car would not duplicate problems. got car back & since i have been scared to death to have this vehicle on the road, it has sat for 2 months. after getting gm involved, tried to take vehicle back to dealer and once again - power steering light on; jerking/bucking sensation; clicking in gear console. 3 times now i have had this car back to dealership and now they decide it's the body control module (bcm), yet they indicated that on my first trip, that a stored code showed them the bcm was not communicating. getting gm involved has been a waste of time because naturally since the warrant is off of the car, they don't want to do anything to soak up the cost of replacing this module which is going to cost me $685.00

I have a 2006 cobalt. periodically i can't open the driver door from inside and i have to roll down the window to pull handle from outside to get out. and then fuss with the latch mechanism sometimes to get the door to shut. and right now my locks are going up and down by themselves while i drive and when i'm parked.. i lock my doors and i come out to my car and they are unlocked. and i can't disengage my alarm...soo every time i open the door i have to jump in and turn on the ignition. i called the local chevy dealer and of course they haven't heard any complaints like this. although, i've read many complaints like this.. they tell me if i want to bring it in, i have to pay for them to diagnose it! i'm still making payments on this car!

My 2006 chevy cobalt had wheel bearing issues starting at 40,000 miles. at 50,000 miles my front end suspension (lower control arm and bushings), struts, and doors locks started acting up. my door locks will jam and i will be trapped in my car until they (door locks) decide to work again. fortunately for me usually only one stops working at a time. the dealer says that it just needs greasing; i have tried every grease under the sun and none has fixed the problem. this is a serious safety issue and this car should have a recall to at least fix the doors!!!.the dealer wants to charge over $1,000 per door for repairs. i have heard of some peoples doors never opening again and the door having to be cut off to be repaired. if something were to happen you need to be able to quickly and safely get out of the car. please please please recall this door issue on the cobalt!

Power steering message appeared within a few days of having it serviced due to the power steering recall. power steering message appears all the time (almost every time i drive it). sometimes power steering message appears and car starts jerking and is hard to steer). when that happens i have to pull over and shut the car off and restart it. sometimes this works but occassionally it doesn't. a couple of times i have went to back out of my parking spot at work and have not been able to turn the wheel at all. i have contacted the dealer where it was serviced and chevy and basically was told that they couldn't help me unless i took it to have the problem diganosed at my expense (70- 200 and something dollars), and if it is related to the power steering recall they may help me with the cost of the repair. i don't think i should have to pay to have the problem diagnosed when their solutiion to their recall didn't fix the problem. my key has gotten stuck in the ignition a couple of times

I noticed issues starting shortly after we bought the vehicle in 08 with the door locks erratically locking and unlocking themselves. my husband fixed the issue by disconnecting the electric locks. then in january of 2011 the car completely stalled while turning. we started it up and got it home. we went through all kinds of things figuring out what was wrong. we changed the catalytic converter, spark plugs, and manifold gasket.it was running fine for a while but still at idle it felt like it was going to stall. then one day it wouldn't start at all and the key got stuck in the ignition. we jumped the vehicle and the key came out. then we got the codes read at auto zone and found we needed a ignition coil. so we replaced that. ran good but the stalling feeling at idle was still present. then the key got stuck in the ignition again and the shifter button was pushed in and the shifter would move without using the brake.i found people have had all these issues online and found the release switch. i used this switch and the shifter is back to normal. we have a limited income and we cant afford all of these issues, but it seems that they are all very common with these cars.

2006 chevrolet cobalt. consumer states issues with power steering *tgw in april 2010, the consumer received a letter stating there was a safety recall on the power steering motor and when the part arrived, it would be fixed free of charge. the consumer went to the dealer and the recalled part was replaced. however, it also caused the transmission to slip and hard braking whenever the power steering message appeared. the consumer informed the dealer of the problem and the dealer stated it had nothing to do with the recall. the consumer returned to the dealer again. the dealer claimed the problem was the control arm bushing. the dealer replaced an im insulator, link, loose sway bar bushing and the steering gear. the consumer stated she continued to experience the same problems with the transmission, and the vehicle loosing power. the consumer returned to the dealer and the mechanic stated the vehicle had an electrical problem. *jb

After parking car and shutting off the ignition the key will get stuck and not come out. this has happened several times. you have to either turn the ignition back on or jiggle the key around in the slot in order for it to release.

I have a 2006 chevy colbalt. the car constantly stalls in traffic. i took it to the machanic and he stated it was an electrical problem that is very common in this make and model car. the mechanic diagnosed it as a high speed communication bus which is part of the throttle body and that's why is stalls. aka fly by wire. have had two recalls. we are having so many problems with this vehicle.

I own a 2006 chevrolet cobalt ls sedan. this car every year like clock work has to either have a new transmission put into it, or has shifting problems. the car will be fine for about a year and then it struggles to shift gears and it will be subtle. then it slowly starts to feel like the transmission is slipping when u reverse and then put it back into drive it slides back before it begins to move forward again. this car is only 5 years old but has had 3 transmissions in it's life time, and it's starting to feel like it's going for its 4th.

Car would no start on first attempt--stereo and all electrical components in car turn on, but car does not start at all.got back into car about 10 minutes later, tried again--started right up. while driving, all gauges would drop all the way to zero and all electrical inside car goes dead. upon parking, car would not immediately restart. got electrical test at auto parts store, told it was reading bad battery--so i replaced battery at that time.

Second 2006 chevy cobalt owned. the first had an electrical issue and burned to the ground within a month of purchasing it.the air had gone out on it and we had returned it to dealer where it was serviced. within a week it caught fire in traffic. we assumed the dealer did something incorrect when reconnecting the battery cables. partly because the fire had started in trunk where battery was. we thought it was human error so we purchased another 2006 cobalt.it started dying in traffic at intersections when stopped or when you allow it to idle. took it to several auto stores and had put on machine. answer was rapid misfire. bought new sparkplugs and wires. replaced those to no avail, tried gas treatments for the shuttering engine, to no avail. took it to mechanics twice. they replaced the cooling sensor. still cutting out and wouldnt idle properly. took back to mechanic. he couldnt find anything. noticed one headlight off when we picked it up. took it home to investigate and headlight back on. we believe its a short somewhere in system. doesn't die when lights are off. aproxomately 98,000 miles. had a minor issue with a gas leak. took it to local dealer and was addressed immediately. no other major issues.

When the car is shifted to park and the engine is shut down, the key cannot be removed from the ignition. the ignition is locked in the on or acc. position, if the key is left in place, the battery is drained. there have been instances where the doors will not lock with the key in the ignition and the ignition in the on position. when the car is in this condition, it cannot be left unattended because everyone has access to the car.

All of my electrical components go crazy including the gauges, radio, headlights, power breaks/ steering. the car also stalls upon stopping and in traffic(usually going over 40mph). it has stalled several times in traffic causing other cars to swerve or slam on their brakes. im schocked i havent been hit yet. then the car will also overaccelarate. on one occasion i barely touched the gas to pull away from a stop sign and the car accelarated very quickly through the intersection and into the park across the street. after all this happens the battery will die and the key will get stuck in the ignition. the same basic cycle occurs every few months. i have had it to the dealership four times this week alone and each time it acts up again within hours. they do not seem to have any idea how to fix it either.

I have owned my 2006 chevy cobalt since june 2006 and have had numerous problems out of this car. i have had to pay out of pocket for every repair because they seem to all happen before a recall is issued and the dealerships will not refund money on the repairs. 1) a/c leaks water in passenger side floor board. i have had it in the shop 3 times and it is still leaking. no one can figure out why the water is leaking into the car. 2) gas tank had to be replaced due to fule lines cracking. 3) power steering went out while my husband was driving on the interstate and was about 130 miles from home. 4) the car would die if the rpm's got too low, this was caused by a carbon build up on the idler. 5) there is no way to check the transmission fluid and it is starting to slip and take forever to upshit. 6) the key gets stuck in the ignition and will not come out. 7) the drivers side door gets stuck and will not open. 8) the door latch sometimes messes up and the door does not close. 9) the stereo display and buttons no longer work. i can not use the cd player for fear of losing the cd for ever since the eject button doesn't work. i can not see the clock or what station the radio is on. the car lost its value so fast that even after 4 yrs of having it i still can not trade it in due to the amt. i still owe on it. so i am stuck driving this piece of crap until it is paid for. i have already invested several thousands of dollars into this car for these problems. i believe that the car is a lemon and i should be reimbursed for the car and all of the out of pocket repairs i have had to make.

Key in my 2006 chevy cobalt won't come out of the ignition. this happens intermittently. say once every ten starts. the web page indicates chevy is aware of the problem: http://www.yourcobalt.com/forums/install-guides-diy/19840-tsb-key-getting-stuck-ignition-shifter-problems-auto-trans.html i have not seen any recall of this problem but there is a fair number of owners who experience it. chevy should recall and repair this for all owners for whom it has occurred.

In april 2010 my daughter's 2006 chevy cobalt's clutch was replaced. there was about 38,500 miles on the vehicle. all the regular maintenances where done to keep this car in shape. the total of the repair was 1400.00 dollars doubled that of the chevy cavalier. yesterday on may 17th she was driving on a busy street in albuquerque, new mexico around 5pm traffic time. her vehcile just stopped went dead with no warning, she was almost rear ended. the car's battery is good and she had about half tank of gas so those weren't the problems. she pushed it into the nearest parking lot and waited but the car would not turn over. there is no sound when she turns the car on, this is insane with the problems we have with this vehicle within a three year period. the dealers do not care about the cost we are putting into this vehicle but something has to be done to help the consumers. my other daughter has the same year and make of her sister' cobalt they were bought on the same day. her vehicle is aan automatic and her power steering is going out already. there has to be something we could do as frustrated consumers.

Car has lost all power twice while in motion. second time had car towed to local dealer and they had a new program downloaded to the computer which controls the car function. said it was a sensor mis-reading the car and had to have the software rebooted. this is totally unsafe for a moving car. also experiencing problems with key ignition lock not releasing the key- diagnosed as a problem with the gear shifter. many people having these problems. these are both issues the gm should own up to.

I own a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. well to begin, i initially had an issue with my shift column, which i researched and found out it was a common issue with this vehicle. it would cause my key to get stuck in the ignition. i took it to the delearship and they replace the whole column. then a a couple of week later, my vehicle was accelerating really fun, i just blew it off for a moment, until i then tried to put my car in reverse one day, and it would not go anywhere. i took it to the delearship and they told me my transmission is slipping, at 86,000 miles. the dealearship has my car, and is trying to figure out if it's even worth fixing. im also wondering if this problem could have been caught the intial time they fixed the vehicle, and figured it was my shifting column, because even with my transmission slipping, it also affected the shifting column. one other problem i have had with the vehicle is the air bag sensor, i have not got this fixed yet, because the dealearship wants to charge $99 just to see exactly what's causing my airbag sensor to not come on, when i have passengers with me.

Feb. 28, 2010 2006 chevy cobalt ls sedan 4 cylinder 4 door automatic transmission i purchased the 2006 chevy cobalt brand new from a chevy dealer. i fully maintained and serviced the vehicle as required and when necessary. on october 25, 2008 i was driving the 2006 chevy cobalt and i was driving onto the cross county parkway heading eastbound when the vehicles steering system failed thus causing me to lose control of the vehicle thus crashing the vehicle onto the parkways guardrail. i was very shaken, the vehicle sustained serious damage, and the county police was called to the scene. a police report was filed soon thereafter. the 2006 chevy cobalt had to be towed off the parkway and back to my home. gm should really investigate the chevy cobalt for steering system failure. *tr

I was driving home on february 05, 2010 when my steering wheel locked up and i did not have control of the vehicle. i was coming to a stop fortunately when this happened. this is the first time i have experienced this situation. a friend told me chevy cobalt have been recalled and i began my search online and have found numerous complaints regarding this issue. several months ago, my fuel pump module had a small crack in it disbursing gasoline. the mechanic who worked on it said he had never seen anything such as this before. im lucky i was not driving at a high speed or around a corner when my steering wheel locked up or my car didn't explode into flames from the gasoline disbursing throughout my car when i had to replace my fuel pump. power steering and fuel pumps should not require regular maintenance. chevy barely acknowledges the problem and say its not big deal, try your best to control your car when your power steering goes out. i've heard this becomes a regular occurrence after the first time. *tr

I have a 2006 chevrolet cobalt with 39k miles. my steering wheel shakes when driving, it is sometimes hard to turn, the radio turns on and off, and the check engine light & air bag light are on. i took the car to the dealership and they said nothing is wrong with the car. they got the lights to turn off. my warranty is now expired and the same lights came on again. *tr

My power steering tends to go out while driving. traction control light comes on. the shifter clicks. my speedometer and rmps go nuts. my abs and brake light flash. the car stalls when i stop in traffic or at lights. they reprogrammed the computer chip three times and replaced the part once. i now am having the problem again and they said its not their problem. *tr

In my 2006 chevy cobalt ss with 82,000 miles the electric power steering will appear on the dash and then my steering completely goes. this has happened atleast 20 times this week and is getting worse. i brought it in to a garage that said they did an analysis and nothing is wrong. there is obviously a problem. when this occurs i need to turn my car off and then on but the steering will go again in time. this is dangerous. *tr

While driving my car 2006 chevy cobalt ss will automatically loose power steering. this has happened about 20 times in the last 6days. i need to turn the car off and then back on in order for my electric power steering to work again for the time being until it goes again. i have brought it in to get looked at and they did an analysis report stating there is nothing wrong. obviously there is a problem when my electric power steering randomly goes while i am driving this is dangerous! i have read many other complaints against this car doing the same thing. something needs to be done. *tr

I bought a 2006 chevy cobalt about six months ago. three months after i bought it the power steering began to go out. it does not take power steering fluid there is a ps motor in the steering column. everyt time i drive my car it goes out, it is not just every once and a while. when i restart my car the power steering will come back on. but within 100 yards it will go out again. the first time it went out i was going around a sharp curve and i nearly lost control of the car. the car behind me had to slam on there breaks because i started to fishtail . this is a major safety issue for me and other drivers and something really needs to be done about it. there is page after page of people who have the same problem. it seems to me that with so many people having this problem that there would be a recall on it. obviously something was done wrong. it is dangerous and basically every time i get into my car i am risking my life. its not worth it and you guys being a safety administration should really look into it. *tr

The chevy cobalt 2006's power steering went out and key was stuck in the ignition. the entire gear shift was replaced to get the key out the ignition. the battery was unplugged to reset computer chip for power steering but the problem still continues. while driving the car has shut off, the needles for the fuel and speedometer continually jumps and the car jerks back and forth while continuing not to have power steering. *tr

 1. my wife and i purchased a 2006 vehicle for my 20 year old daughter roughly a year ago. everything was fine for the first 9 months. after that one day when my daughter was driving the vehicle it began to shake and the power steering light began to flash and she had no control over the vehicle, she had to pull over, turn off the vehicle and restart it and the car was fine until she got home. everytime you drive the car literally every 2 miles you have to pull over and turn the car off and start it again, it is extremely dangerous and a hassle. we took the car to the dealership and they said because we didn't purchase a warranty it would cost 2,000 dollars to fix. due to the poor economy we cannot afford to fix the car, but yet we put down 3,000 on the vehicle and we continue to be stuck with 350 car payments every month for a vehicle we cannot even drive. something needs to be done about this car, we are extremely worried about anyone that has one of these cars. the car is not worth the money we are spending on it. we have no idea what to do about the situation and we are in a horrible position. *tr

My 2006 chevrolet cobalt lt sedan car has a power steering malfunction. when i start my car the power steering is fine for about 100 yards and then i receive a message in my dash stating power steering and then my steering wheel is hard, almost impossible to turn. this happened while traveling on the interstate and almost caused me to crash. this malfunction is very dangerous because it always happens spontaneously. i have also had issues with my keys getting stuck in the ignition, sometimes for twenty minutes or more. *tr

I own a 2006 chevy cobalt lt and recently while i am driving the t/c, security, and power steering lights come on and my power steering goes out and my car starts bucking and jumping like crazy. the last time it happened while i was driving 70 down the interstate and i almost crashed into the divider wall trying to pull over. it has been brought into the dealership 3 times and they have no idea what is causing it. i have already paid for a new transmission module which was not the problem. it seems to reset after the car is turned off for a while but if it happens it could cause serious crashes. there are already thousands of reports on the same incident with this particular car. *tr

In summer, 2009, problems began to arise with steering and cruise control on 2006 chevy. cobalt. a light in the dash would come on then steering becomes very hard, uncontrollable as if the car had no power assist at all. the power assist failures became more frequent so car was taken to chevy. dealer on 9/25/09. the service dept. charged $181.00 and made some corrections but were reluctant to advise the problem had been corrected. on 10/20/09, a collision almost occurred during a right hand turn being made and the power steering failure coinciding. *tr

I bought my 2006 chevy cobalt in may 2006. there has been a power steering problem occurring with my car for about 7 months now. every now and then, the car completely stops working or the car begins to jolt every time i press the gas pedal. it makes it very difficult to drive and i have to pull over. sometimes after i shut off the car the problem disappears, but sometimes it stays there for a few days. the engine light also goes on as well as the tc light. it is very dangerous to drive like this because the steering wheel also hardens up to the point where you can no longer turn the wheel. it has happened to me while my car has been parked and while driving on the highway and on a regular road. i have taken it to a mechanic and he was unable to detect the problem. i spoke to the dealer and they said to take it right when the problem occurs because if the problem disappears they will be unable to detect it. i took the car on sept. 9, 2009 when it was giving me problems and was very close to the dealer, but since it was 30 mins before they closed they could not inspect it. i took it back the next day and now i'm waiting on the results and estimate, which today's date is sept.11, 2009. they said the estimate ranges from $200 to $900. i've looked up recalls on this problem and there were none made even though many other people are having the same exact problems. i feel very unsafe driving this car and i would like this problem to be heard and fixed. *tr

The power steering light on my 2006 cobalt came on randomly. there was nothing to lead up to the incident. then later the light had disappeared for a week, until it came up again. this time i received the light warning as well as losing my power steering. it is not constant, but is becoming a more common thing. i have not fixed the problem yet because the dealer can not figure out what the problem is with regular diagnostic testing, and i will not fork out the money to have the dig further into the car. i am looking on fixing the problem myself, but still do not know what the problem may be. i do not want to buy a used item and have the same problem happen. i have been reading up on this problem and it seems to be a pretty common thing with the chevy cobalt's and pontiac g5's. what i would like to do is find an oem part with a warranty, put that is also hard because i don't know if there is a new aftermarket oem part that has been changed so that this problem does not occur again. *tr

 1) when purchasing this used vehicle from the dealer, we were informed the previous owner had broken his key in the ignition switch, hence the broken ignition lock mechanism. lie 2) car began making a front end noise or so i thought, the next day as my daughter in law and my grandkids were driving home the power steering indicator light turned on, she applied her brakes to slow down and all the lights on the panel turned on and her steering locked. the truck behind us was forced off the road to avoid slamming in to us. after getting online to see if there was going to be an easy and inexpensive way to repair this problem i was appalled to read all the complaint regarding these same issues. i lost my oldest child to faulty seat belts on the 01 ford ranger edge. this is indeed a safety issued that needs to be resolved immediately before someone is seriously hurt or killed. *tr

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt purchased used with 28000 miles on it. all my problems started about a month after i bought the car. the steering wheel started shaking violently when driving at 50 mph and over so i took it in to a chevy dealer and they rotated and balanced the tires and that seemed to fix that problem. about 2 weeks i was driving home and i was sitting at a red light and the car just shut off. i restarted the car and every thing was fine on the dash board, no warning lights or messages in the driver information center. i started driving again and when i press on the gas there was this loud grinding noise and it felt like the car was not shifting gears properly. so i pulled over on the side of the road and turned the car off for about 10 minutes and restarted it and it drove fine. now at this point im just thinking that there is a malfunction in the computer. i took the car to the dealer the next day and they scanned the computer and found no errors and everything was checking out fine. about 3 weeks later i was driving on the highway and i lost complete control of steering and the power steering message in the driver information center was displayed along with the check engine light. unable to steer i had to stop in the middle of the highway and shut the car off. i waited about 20 minutes and restarted the car and the power steering warning message and check engine light had gone away and i gained steering control again. i once again took the car to the dealer and they could not find anything wrong with the car. now some days when i start my car the power steering warning message and the check engine light come on and some days the car drives fine and its really starting to frustrate me. in addition to the steering problem i am unable to remove my key form the ignition. to this day none of my problems have been resolved. *jb

I was driving my 2006 chevy cobalt when i was taking a friend to the airport. i was on i-495 n in the lane leading to the exit that takes you to the airport toll road. i applied my brakes and the car did not slow down. hoping to coast down the exit and pull off to the side of the road, i turned the steering wheel to veer the car left. the car kept going straight. i kept hitting the brakes and turned the steering wheel to the left, but the car did not stop, nor did it turn. we crashed into the guardrail at about 50 mph. the airbags did not deploy. turns out the car shut off while i was driving it. this was the second time this had occurred. it happened back in may 2006 and i took it in to the dealership. they kept it for a couple of days and said it was fine. apparently not. *jb

2-incidents of sudden acceleration at freeway speeds: the first time the cruise was activated and on hitting resume the car took off on it's own. the coast function did not slow the car and turning off the cruise did not slow the car. i was in fairly light traffic and was able to steer and brake out of trouble until the accelerator returned to normal[the brakes only partially slowed the car because of the high speed involved]. about an hour later i was entering a freeway and at about 40-45 mph the accelerator went to the floor on its own again and i had only partial control of the car's speed. the cruise was off this time and again after a few minutes and miles the engine revved down to normal on its own. again traffic was fairly light so i was able to steer and brake through without a crash but in heavier traffic this would be a serious problem. the dealer test drove the car for about 18-miles but could not replicate the incident which is random and intermittent and their diagnostic tests showed these incidents never happened but believe me this is a real problem when these computers or electronic systems malfunction. general motors has opined that this is impossible which is a cover up since everything is controlled electronically. this is particularly dangerous since it happens at freeway speeds and the pedal goes to the max. *jb

Vehicle will not start after it is turned off after a period of driving. this occurs at least 5-10 times a week. the vehicle was taken back to the dealership, bresee chevy in liverpool, ny for this problem, and we were told nothing could be done because the problem could not be replicated. we were told that we had a bad battery cell and were charged for a battery replacement after owning the vehicle for 2 years. the vehicle now has a engine low power warning and the engine light is on. the vehicle runs erratically, and there is concern of stalling while driving. this vehicle was purchased brand new in november of 2005, and is only used for commuting to work on the highway. also, the tires on this vehicle were completely bald at 38,000 miles and had to be replaced, and the bearings on the front end also had to be replaced. this vehicle has major problems-it is an overall nightmare! *tr

I have a 2006 chevrolet cobalt lt. i have 39,000 miles on it and have had numerous issues with the car! the main issue seems to be the power steering. i was 4 hours from home and my power steering light came on. my wheel locked up and was hard to steer. i cut the car off and back on and it seemed to correct it for about a minute and then locked up completely. this has been an issue in numerous cobalts that i have seen. i talked with other people who own them and they have the same issues mine has. that goes to show there is an issue with the chevy cobalt. most people have had the key stick in the ignition (i have had to have that replaced) and now power steering! please do something! *tr

I currently own a 2006 chevy cobalt. the current problem is that the key will not come out of the ignition. when this occurs all of the interior electronic features stay on as well as the exterior lights. i did have the shift assembly replaced. prior to it being replaced, it occurred randomly but then started to happen more frequently. the battery is being drained by this problem which in turn is causing a secondary issue. the dealer who replaced it stated that this a common occurrence in all chevy cobalt

I have two issues with my 2006 chevy cobalt: 1. aug 2009 the power steering went out completely while driving, rendering it nearly impossible to navigate. it works everytime i turn on the car for approximately 1-3 minutes and goes out everytime it's driven. i've been quoted that it will cost me $565 just for the part which must be ordered from a gm dealer only since the warranty ran out at 50k miles, the power steering went out on me at around 50500 miles. just past the mark. this is a very dangerous issue that seriously needs to be addressed and recalled by gm for i've read hundreds of complaints from others who drive the same make and year. 2) the second issue is that the key locks in the ignition at least once a week making it impossible to start the car. please look into these problems with this car for they can be very dangerous before someone loses their life over it. *tr

We are buying a used 2006 chevy cobalt ls & the key has stuck in the ignition. we have found out through research that this has been a huge problem with others & the automatic shifter assembly has to be replaced. we have no warranty now & still owe too much on the car. why is there no recall on this since there are so many complaints? every single web site we were on people have complained about this. this is a rotten deal. . every website has too many complaints. there absolutely should be a recall to fix this problem.----this was a message sent to chevrolet of which they replied: thank you for contacting the chevrolet customer assistance center. i have processed the information on your vehicle and after thoroughly researching all the resources available to me; i was not able to find any recall associated to your vehicle. recalls are vehicle identification number specific so not all vehicles of a model year are affected. i emailed back that they need to have a recall for this. it is costly to replace & not fair to the consumer. please help. *tr

The car shifter button won't release the key. in other words the key will not come out of the ignition. this is the first time it has happened. the repair shop has to put a new shifter in because they couldn't buy just the interlock system (button). the repair shop says it sounds like a lot of people have the same problem because the dealership had several in stock. i have read several complaints online concerning this problem. it is dangerous when you have to leave your key in your car overnight. *tr

With out warning. the key stays locked in the ignition, due to a faulty shifter ( microswitch pin) and will not release. problem happens every time the car is put into park, and tried to pull the key from the ignition. dealer service tech's claims the defective part is cheaply made and 6 out of 10 colbalts have this problem. to fix the problem complete replacement of the shifter. *tr

 1) when parking my cobalt, 3 of every 5 times my key becomes stuck in the ignition. i have to do things like--apply the brake off-and-on repeatedly, shift in-and-out of park repeatedly, and sometimes even rock the car back-and-forth with my body until it clicks into place and i can take my key out of the ignition. i work late shift at the hospital. it is a very scary situation to be stuck in the dark--in the middle of a parking lot--not able to get the key out of the ignition. 2)periodically, when i start up my cobalt, the clock on my dashboard will start back at 12:00. it is very frustrating to have to keep resetting my clock. why is this happening? 3) as i drive my cobalt, the back windows slowly roll themselves down. i am constantly having to reach back and roll them up. they do not roll themselves down all the way, but they crack themselves enough to hear the air coming in. 4) since i bought my cobalt i have had problems with my headlights pointing downward too much. i have brought them in to be adjusted on more than one occasion. they are still not adjusted correctly, and--at times-- i have to squat down in my seat at night in order to see under my headlights, so i do not cause an accident. there was a wreck associated with this headlight problem late in '06 involving a deer on the highway becuase it was impossible to see in time. *jb

Dt: the contact stated while driving at various speeds the engine shut off four times suddenly without warning. after sitting a short while, the vehicle restarted every time. the check engine light did not illuminate in the vehicle prior to each incident. the manufacturer alerted the dealership the problem was with the ignition coil. the dealership replaced the ignition coil and corrected the problem. updated 9/20/2006 - *nm

Two of my friends and i went to brunch on sunday, 5-21-06. i had purchased the vehicle on 5-13-06. it is a cobalt ss. we parked the car in the parking lot. i could not remove the key from the ignition. since i had another key, i turned the motor off and locked the door. when we came back about an hour later, i opened the door and was able to remove the key. the dealer states: they inspected shifter and lock cylinder per bulletin 06-07-30-004b and was unable to verify the complaint... then i started the car with my foot on the brake and put it in reverse. the car lunged backwards, i put it in neutral and then park, then put the hand brake on, but nothing would stop it until it hit a tree brace in the parking lot. the dealer stated, unable to duplicate but reprogrammed the pcm with updated calibrations j6354... of course, they would not repair the damage to my 7-day old car. i am lucky there were no people walking in the parking lot at the time!! i obtained 3 appraisals to repair the damages, the lowest being $790.91. i believe gm is responsible for this. it definitely was a safety hazard and i'm afraid it will happen again. thank you. *jb

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet cobalt. while driving 45 mph, the vehicle loses power and rolls to a stop. the contact loses control of the vehicle and the power steering fails. all of the instrument panel lights illuminated. after purchasing the vehicle, the contact detected smoke. a mechanic stated that all of the wiring and fuses in the vehicle needed to be replaced. the shifter locks in position and the key cannot be removed from the ignition. as a result, the vehicle cannot be shut off, which causes the battery to fail. the vehicle has to be connected to a charger all night in order to be driven the next day. in may of 2006, the dealer stated that they could not locate the failure. in november of 2007, after the warranty expired, the dealer stated that all the wiring in the vehicle needed to be replaced and the contact would be charged. the failure mileage was 3,000 and current mileage was 49,600.

I parked my 2006 chevrolet cobalt in my driveway and overnight an animal climbed up under a plastic schroud over the 4 cyl engine and literally chewed the main wire harness off the connector that feeds the electrical wiring to the engine components , approximately 20 - 30 wires. the wires were inches too short to reconnect to the engine connector, and the whole wiring harness had to be replaced at a cost of $826.00 at a chevrolet dealer. this area is accessible to animals, such as squirrels/ chipmunks, etc. they apparently used the wiring materials for nesting purposes. should this area be enclosed or further protection be provided on the wiring components to prevent fires or malfunctioning components/sensors to prevent accidents of system faults. every wire on the connector was separated and shortened overnight. it took the gm service garage several hours to find this fault, and was not covered by any gm liability for leaving access to this area. *ak
