Battery died in car, had to jump the car. car started fine, steering seemed to be a little tight. after a few minutes of driving the tightness in the steering went away. however upon arriving at home the key would not come out of the ignition, and the shifter would shift into any gear easily without having to press in the shifter button. also in attempts to remove the key the steering wheel is now locked all the way to the right with the wheels locked in the right position. was able to remove key from ignition by locating the emergency key release switch under the steering column but car will not start now as key wont turn all the way, and shifter still shifts into any gear without having to press the shifter button. car was parked front first against building so i have no idea how i will get it towed out of there to a shop to fix it! i suspect the shifter cable assembly at the end of the shifter which is made out of plastic is broken. will verify when its taken apart. i have seen at least 50 other cases on the internet where this piece breaks and causes the car not to register it being in park and will not release key from ignition. gm recalled certain years for shifter problems but not the 2007 unfortunately! *tr

I am in atlanta, georgia where the weather is 104'. i began to drive on the highway and parked my car in a garage where i began to smell gas. then as the days went on i smelled the gas stronger and fumes. i was riding my little 1 year old cousin around when i noticed a gas leak from the car. he then began to cough and i immediately switched vehicles for his safety. i was told that the cobalts had a recall on fuel systems but mine was not covered. i did have a power wheel steering recall which i did not understand why i didn't have a fuel system recall. i would think they messed up both at the same time. i need this fixed as soon as possible because the heat is rising outside and the gas is actually spilling from the tank. this is a dangerous issue which i shouldn't have to fix if the manufacturer created so many. *tr

On march 4, 2011 i had my 2007 cobalt's electrical power steering fixed due to the recall i recieved in the mail. this was as emich chevorlet in colorado. recently i have been having issues making turns at slower speeds and sometime unable to turn at all. i contacted my personal shop and was told the dealer needed to do the work and the recall should have fixed this defunct part. i contacted the dealer today who straight away told me it was not their problem. if you scour the internet numerous people are still posting that even after the recall these parts (steering) are still failing and cuasing accidents. i should not have top pay for a part that cannot last a year and 3 days.

My husband bought his car nov.6, 2008 and since that we didn't have a problem anything but that one window on the right of the back seat won't move. anyway, on oct.22, 2011, my husband was coming home from work when the power steering went off, thank god he made it safe to our home. on monday, he made the appointment to the dealer place for the recall we kept on putting off. so the following morning, tuesday, the dealer replaced the electric power steering. the car was working fine that whole day. the next morning, the car won't do anything at all. the un/lock button won't work as if there's no power and the car won't start.

Purchased vehicle brand new in 2007 and no problems till now. 22 year old daughter driving vehicle, she is a college student. she drives in major city daily and driving home from school gauge cluster went crazy and power steering went out. scaring her, she parked the car in a church lot and i sent the car to a dealer the next day. i had found on the internet that there was a recall on the power steering assist motor and informed the dealership of such when the work was to be done. they replaced the motor under the recall but also charged me $780.00 to replace the steering column which they said was bad. i have found 1000 + complaints on the internet of people saying their steering columns were supposedly bad as well with 1 person having theirs replaced 3 times now. she picked the car up and 2 weeks later the same thing occurs again. the dealership looks at it for 4 days and claim they can't find anything wrong so do nothing but investigate. they claim the codes were erased on the computer because we drove it after the fault but the car was parked and immediately hauled to the dealer on a flatbed truck. as i said before there are well over 1,000 complaints on the internet that i have found myself so i am sure there are a lot more. as soon as i can afford it this car will be put in town square with a big lemon sign on it and she will be driving something other than gm.

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. there is a problem with the front end making the car shimmy and shake upon braking...causes clunking noises and such. i have researched online whether or not other owners of said vehicle have been having this problem as well and it seems to me that this problem is occuring with many owners of this vehicle. some have spent thousands on repairs and still the problem is there. i have been told by a certified chevy mechanic that the problem lies in the steering column. please examine this issue further as i feel it is recall worthy. thank you for your time regarding this issue as owning a safe reliable vehicle is of utmost importance to me and those i share the road with. helpful link to where others are making their voices heard on this matter: http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2007/chevrolet/cobalt/front+suspension again thank you.

I purchased a 2007 chevy cobalt in 2008, with approx. 30,000 miles.when i had around 35,000, miles i started to get loud ,rattling noises, like metal on metal, coming from under the car.they usually happen when i go over ripples or bumps in the road , at slower speeds.i took my car back to the dealer and asked him if they had heard of any problems or received any technical service bulletins about this problem and he said they had not.(july 2009) i told him to inform me if they did.in the meantime, my warranty expired.at that time,i had already started to research the problem online and network with some other persons, locally, to see if they had any such problem.well lo and behold, it seems that there was a technical bulletin issued on 11-9-2005 (# 050232005) that details this problem. and yes, apparently, other persons that i have talked to, and also with the research that i did online, definetely showed that many others are also having this same problem! i feel that as a respondsible auto manufacturer that gm needs to correct this horrible rattle.a recall for this is in order, especially since they were aware of this since 2005.i do not feel that we,,the consumer ,should be respondsible for this repair,as gm is trying to repair their image,do the right and fix this at no cost to the consumer--recall

I am a owner of a 2007 chevy cobalt and i just hit the 33,000 mile mark. as i was driving on the freeway at a speed of about 60 mph, my steering got really hard when i was turning on a small curve. then on the dash board power steering came out and it started making a beeping noise. since that happen i exited the freeway, as i was turning into a save area to check the car, the steering became impossible to maneuver.

Well i bought a 2007 chevy cobalt 2 weeks ago. they did the recalls on it and the power steering column i then drove the car down a gravel driveway at my girl friends dads house and the front end sounded like it was about to falll apart. so i took it back to the dealership , they then basically disassembled my entire dash and replaced the stteering column. unfurtunately in the process of doing this they tied practically all my wiring in knots and taped it all up with electric tape. the steering still rattles and the problem is better but still exist. i dont think dealersships should be selling cars with this defect. i mean i thought i was buying a car in good condidtion with 37000 miles and i end up with the hunk of crap.

I was driving and suddenly lost power steering when attempting to make a right turn. continued driving though very difficult to even change lanes. once i reached my destination, had extreme difficulties in parking my vehicle. i turned off the vehicle, turned it on again and at that point power steering was restored. no where in the vehicle manual did it indicate i can turn off the car and restart should i suddently lose power steering. i have already contacted chevrolet and they infomred me of the power steering recall of which i never received a recall notice as well as a recall for the fuel pump modular, again, never received a recall notice. i have scheduled an appointment for tomorrow to have my vehicle serviced at a chevrolet dealer to have both items fixed.

The steering wheel locks, while i am driving and happened to almost collide into a passing vehicle on the lane next to me. it happens within 5-10 min. after i turn on the chevy cobalt 2007. it occurs every single time i intend to drive the vehicle. the vehicle is not in use for i have small children and i am afraid an accident will occur. i have not yet changed the part but the mechanic at the chevrolet dealership said it was the motor for the steering wheel pump. i will be changing the part and i will hold on to the factory part.

I purchased a 2007 chevrolet cobalt in 2006 , they sold me the vehicle that they used for test driving, which i told them was out of line and they still made me purchase it. i bought it back a week later and they had to line it up because it was all over the road. a month later, the steering whhel would not turn, the service department told me i had to pay $1200.00 to get it fixed until i notified the district manager and he made them fix it.then the security air bag light stayed on and it would not pass inspection and they tried to make me pay for that. i have been spending money on tires all the time, spend money on brakes all the time, have problems with the electrical units to the radio keeps going out, burrans in the wheel is gone, and it keeps cutting off. i have had nothing but problems since i purchased this vehicle. i got a letter for the recall for the power steering and when i gotmy car back, the check engine light stays on, they messed up my bootand now telling me i need to fix it when they had someone to drive my car for 12 miles. now all i get is a lot of disrespect fromthem and they don't want to repair what they messed up. i also wanted to purchase another car last month for my son who graduated from college and i had to look through the windows to see vehicles instead of the salesman opening the door and letting me look in the inside. mind you i bought a 16,000.00 car from they and that's how they appreciate my business. i am heart broken because i feel as if i was robbed of my money. i should not have been given a car that they use for test driving. also the security airbag light would not go off and they would notlet itpass inspection.

Power steering went out in my 2007 chevy cobalt when i was coasting in a parking lot. i shut the car off and then restarted it. it drove fine until i slowed down and then the power steering went out again. it has happened several times since that day. every time it happens, i pull over, shut the car off, wait and then restart it. it usually only happens when i am driving through a neighborhood or parking lot. my car has 35,000 miles on it. i contacted a gm dealership repair shop and was told that the factory my car came from has not had the recall yet. they also said it could take up to five years before there's a recall on my vehicle. i know that there is a recall on the power steering component for cobalts years 2005-2010.

My 2007 cobalt drove fine, until it reached 55000 miles.oneday it felt and sounded like the front end was going to fall out.if i would go slow over a hump, you could hear a knocking noise at the bottom of the steering column.i took it to 6 different mechanics, who checked everything, struts, springs, rack&pinion, etc.finally, one mechanic, turned the steering wheel left to right about a 1/2 an inch and you could hear a knocking.he said, take it to the dealer,it is the steering.i made at least 10 trips to get it worked on.i was on the phone daily with gm.i explained when i am driving down the road, the car is all over the road, they think i am drunk,it does what it wants to.the steering wheel turns way farther than a normal steering wheel, alot of play.i can park and the wheel will be upside down, but my tires will be straight.or driving straight and wheel is turned to one side.i was soo upset, mad, because this is a 2007 vehichle.i knew nothing of a recall.they replaced my 2 front lower control arms and my lower steering column.i had to pay $900.00 for all of the work.it fixed my problem about 60%.the dealer was so nice and understanding, that he reimburse me.which i am soo thankful.so i haven't even bothered to get back intouch with them.i am to the point that i do not care.if i wreck,i wreck.i am tired of all the hassling, time, money, aggravation and days on the telephone. i still hear a knocking going over a small hump. i drive slow, stop at railroad crossings, because i try to take care of my car. i have always bought chevrolet and have never had this kind of trouble. i really do hope they figure this out and they probable do to. they are not allowed to sale any cobalts off the dealer lots at this time, until it is resolved. i am sure it is not all cobalts with these problems. i believe atleast 50% of the people have heard or read of these steering problems and are saying that theres does the same thing. i just know that i would hate to be in gm's shoes right now. thank you. *tr

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) loss of warning chimes due to defective drivers door speaker (2007 cobalt and & 2007 gmc canyon). i am current awaiting repair under the 2nd recall for our cobalt vin [xxx](gas leak & loss of steering defects not yet repaired). the letter received from gm warning of the steering defect stated a warning chime would sound and a message on the drivers info cntr would appear. problem is, the speaker where the warning sounds come from is intermittent. in fact, i cannot tell if i have the blinkers on without looking at the dashboard; something that's not always safe to do. even though this started shortly after the warranty expired; i asked the dealer to repair it because i considered it unsafe. if a car manufacturer is going to change the role of a speaker from merely producing sound for radio use to sounding safety warning chimes then the speaker ought to have an extended warranty. i am approaching my middle 50's and do not abuse the sound system in the car. in my opinion; this failing speaker is a definite safety issue. in fact, our 2007 gmc canyon is experiencing the same issue. i've recently noticed the drivers door speaker is starting to distort and realized after the cobalts speaker failed the canyon drivers door speaker also emits warning chimes. as i stated above, if the role of a speaker is to sound warning chimes, then it becomes a possible safety issue when it fails.  While driving on the freeway my power steering seemed to suddenly go out - it became difficult for me to steer the direction i needed to go. i was able to pull off the freeway where a gas station attendant told me that he had another customer experience a similar problem and that the problem went away by turning the car off and then restarting it. i am so concerned that the steering is such a safety issue that i cannot let my petite 21-year old daughter drive this car

Iincident report: driving 70 miles on the interstate and felt a sudden resistance in steering, the power steering message came on the dash and when i accelerated or pushed on the brake it became hard to steer. pulled into the first exit and after using all my strength parked and shut the car off. when i got back in the light was off and the steering was back to normal. we all know that unless the message is on they won't read for the error in the diagnostic so i came on home. i did call the dealer and he looked up and said there was no recall for my cobalt. so who decides which ones to recall when the problem happens and i am away from home where do i take it. who will pay for towing? makes me want to go buy a ford and i have never had anything but chevy except for one lemon that was a dodge durango (another recall that didn't effect my car).

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6) gm 2007 cobalt [xxx] late at night cold and rainy i was driving slow trying to turn on 9th ave from fairfield dr. the car steered itself as i could not steer it, into a deep drainage ditch. my passenger head almost went through the windshield, my safety belt bruised my neck and shoulder, painfully. my passenger was bleeding profusely, a person stopped and took us for help. i was so shaken up and it happened so fast, that i could not find my cell phone to call 911. the next day my grandfather who helped me pay for the car, had the car put on a trailer and stored in a covered secure area where it is still stored and untampered with. we contacted gm, it has been over two months, we just received a letter from their attorney. to top this all off, i received a recall letter two days after it happened! and then i was told that my insurance does not have collision coverage but only comprehensive. i work hard and go to college for two months i have been paying for taxes, over $35.00 per day. i loved this car but now i will not ride in one. i still have night mares on the crash. i am behind in my bills. thank you gm for not helping me. i wish to have this car examined. i can not afford to pay someone to inspect the steering nor can i pay for an attorney. your help is desperately needed, as my grandfather believes that gm will delay this repair or replacement. i hope you can help. also the air bag never deployed. the car is totaled. i cleaned the blood with 3 bottles of hydrogen peroxide to save the leather seats. my passenger's hospital bill was over $11,000.00. *tr

'power assist' to steering intermittantly fails. no power steering warning lightcame on.
02/01/2010500001
I was driving down the highway when the power steering first failed. the car became slightly more difficult at high speed and extremely tuff at low speeds. this occurred around 50k in the manual it says to shut off the car and turn steering wheel all the way around completely. this temporarily fixed the issue until it became a daily matter in which it happens within the first ten seconds of starting the vehicle. this is a 2007 chevy cobalt ls 2 door, auto. there has been a recall on certain chevy cobalts but not all of them. my vin number is told not to apply yet is clearly the same issue. this is an extreme safety issue. that i would like to be covered by gm. *tr

We were driving through a parking lot about 10 miles an hour when my power steering went out. we heard a beeping sound and could not turn the wheel. there was a car coming towards us and we started freaking out and to swerve to miss them so we would not wreck. we had no choice to pull over and try to figure out what was wrong, but since it is electric we could not find what was wrong. since this happened away from our house i missed work. this problem occurred for about four days before we could get it fixed. we took it to the chevy dealership and they said they were unable to help because it was not under warranty. we were also told that the dealership could not help because no one was in a wreck or hurt. the dealership wanted to charge us 1200 dollars. we ended up taking it somewhere else for 800 dollars. we had to buy a new power steering column and the part of the electrical power steering. *tr

On february 10, 2010, while traveling west on 14th street another driver in the left lane entered my lane (right lane), and i slammed on brakes to stop from hitting the other drivers vehicle. despite the fact it was a sunny very cold day outside and the streets were dry the brakes on my vehicle locked up as though i have an anti-locking braking system, which i don't have on my car. the steering wheel became none responsive and my car ended up jumping the curb and hitting a telephone pole on the front driver side of the car. there is damage to the driver side headlight and a dent in the same area in the shape of the pole; furthermore, the airbag never deployed. the car is currently at a gm body shop being repaired by the other drivers insurance; however, in light of the recent gm recall about an issue with the steering wheel i am bringing my accident to your attention just in case the issues are related. *tr

I am an unfortunate owner of one of the worst cars ever made, a chevrolet cobalt. i bought this car in 2008 with hopes that it would stand up to my older cavalier and sunfire. i was sadly wrong about my choice. after only two months of owning my vehicle (i bought it at a used car centre with 54000 kms. jim gilberts in fredericton, nb) and 500 kms over my 60000k warranty my sway bar links had to be replaced. one month after i replaced them i had to replace both control arm bushings. after replacing all of that i started to hear rattling coming from my steering wheel. i came to find out that my steering column will need to be replaced. before i bought my car i had a vehicle history report done and it came back clean. it was used as a city courier car. i had thought that maybe because of city driving these parts had been worn out prematurely. after doing some research i found hundreds and thousands of people who are experiencing the same problems. almost all of them claim that these problems were with cars bought directly off the lot. i know 5 people personally who also had the same problems. one of my friends had his steering column replaced 4 times. i replaced my sway bar links twice and they need to be replaced again and i am on my second set of control arm bushings. i have yet replaced my steering column because i can not afford the bill. i have learned of the recent recall for the power steering motor. that is one of the problems that i don't have, yet. could someone please explain to me how recalls are decided on? does someone have to get into an accident for these companies to take some kind of action? i am waiting for the day when i am driving on the highway and the front end of my car falls off. *tr

I drove my 2007 chevrolet cobalt into a hardware store parking lot and was making a left turn to find a parking space when the power steering failed. i was unable to complete the turn and as a result hit the cement pole that was protecting the cable that was attached to the telephone pole. i was able to drive the car home, but later that night i had to go to the emergency room as i was in a lot of pain. after reading my x-rays, the doctor said i had rib contusions and whiplash. a week later i am still suffering pain and unable to function normally from the accident. i have not had the damage to the car addressed yet and i don't intent to drive it again. *tr

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. january 1, 2009 in the first time i lost power steering. at first it was intermittent but know it happens every time, anywhere from 2 seconds to 2 minutes after starting to drive. when i bought the car in august of 2007, i purchased a $3600 extended warranty that said it would cover power steering issues but when i took my car to the chevy dealership, they told me my warrant wouldn't cover the problem and that it would cost over $1000 to the power steering model replaced. since then i've just learned how to drive my car safely. i don't have the money to get it fixed on my own and need help! *tr

I have been having issues with my 2007 chevrolet cobalt. while driving, usually on the highway, my car beeps twice and the words power steering appears on my dash. when this happens it's extremely difficult to turn the wheel left or right. i need to pull over and turn the car off and back on to regain steering. the first time i experienced this was in october 2009. i called the dealership that sold me the car and they said that it was just something that happened with cobalts. the problem was fairly inconsistent until the past month, it now happens on a daily basis. i find it happens more frequently when i am traveling at high speeds. the car needs to be turned off and back on to regain steering. usually the steering goes out about every ten to fifteen minutes. *tr

I was going to park so i put the car in reverse, and tried to turn the wheel, but it did not turn it continued straight. i had to turn the car off and on again to be able to turn the wheel. it only occurred that one time. i did not correct the failure, this should be recalled. if i were on the highway, i would not have been able to steer off if i had to which could have created a serious accident. *tr

Driver was changing lanes on highway in a 2007 chevy cobalt when her steering wheel froze up on her. she could not correct steering and her brakes seemed to lose power as well. she hit a concrete barrier, her car went airborne and started rolling. she was ejected about fifty feet. vehicle was a complete loss. the auto insurance company won't investigate due to her car being just 12,000 miles over warranty. (economic loss rule) the car is still being held for further investigation per request of the driver. vehicle never had trouble before this. driver was severely injured spending 10 days in hospital, 2 of those in icu. driver had complications due to injuries, now on round the clock iv's at home. *tr

I was driving and the power steering light came on, the all of a sudden the steering wheel was hard to turn, and i was unable to make a right or left turn. when i did try turning, my car almost hit another car that was stopped at the light because i did not have enough strength to turn the wheel all the way. it has progressively got worse and when i took the car into a chevy service dealer, i was told this is a common problem with the cobalt and they had many of them coming in for service with the same problem and the whole system would have to be replaced. the cost i was quoted was $1,000.00. gmc customer service was contacted by the dealership service manager and the dealership agreed to pay a percentage of the repair cost which would still leave me paying $475.00. i've only had the car for 2 years and purchased it used with 14,000.00 miles. i was also told that this issue is occurring when and if the car has been jump started because this is a main cause of which triggers the major safety and costly issue. the first question that i was asked of me is: has the car been jump started with cables at any given time? this issue has caused some hardship in my family as well as transportation issues for a single mom as myself. i am currently upside down on the vehicle by 7 thousand dollars so trading it in is not an option for me. i am currently paying for a chevy silverado as well. *tr

I had been out of town and had driven 200 almost non stop, interstate travel all day, when while driving on the interstate my power steering went out. it became difficult to keep my car steady and had severe difficulty following the twists of the road as the wheel was very difficult to turn, even just to change lanes, or follow the curves of the road through road work. i had to swerve to miss a truck that swerved into my lane, and almost crashed due to the fact my wheel was so difficult to turn. i was able to make it to the side of the road, so i stopped, turned off my vehicle for a few minutes, turned it back on and worked fine. went 4 miles, and it went out again. i drove another 60 miles and it didn't come back on. i have 58000 miles on my vehicle. i was told my vehicle is no longer under warranty so any work done to it will be out of my pocket. *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt and i am writing this complaint due to loosing the power steering on my car. the power steering is electric so it was hard for anyone to figure out what was going on with my car, i had to take it to the chevy dealer and they knew exactly what was going on. the power steering went out and the power steering light came on, on my dashboard. i restarted my car and the power steering kick back in, but after that one time, the power steering would go out every three seconds and there was nothing i could do but restart the car no matter where i was once the power steering went out. i have a 6 year old son and this scared me extremely badly. i am a single mother who works daily to provide for my son, and other family members, it is imperative that i have my vehicle. unfortunately the dealer had to keep my car and the insurance company does not give you a car while your car is in the shop, the funny thing is neither does chevy, although they knew what the issue was they would not provide a car for me to use while they had my car. this also happened right before christmas, so the christmas money i had saved for my sons christmas went into getting my steering fixed which cost me $600. so needless to say, there went christmas. and according to chevy i had to pay the entire lump sum before i could even move my car, so i had no choice but to pay the entire amount. i am very disappointed in chevy for this issue, my sons safety is utterly important to me and i only got this car because i was under the impression it was a safe car, had i known about this power steering issue i would never have chosen chevy in the first place. *tr

My 2007 chevrolet cobalt has steering wheel problems. everytime i turn on my car power steering flashes about a minute or so after and immediately the wheel is very hard to turn. this makes it difficult to turn in any direction and even to change lanes. it is so hard that i cannot park correctly and i am scared to even try to parallel park because the last time i tried i hit another car. i do not understand why this issue is not being dealt with immediately because it is putting people in unbearable situations. i was told that i could only get it fixed at the car dealership where i purchased the vehicle from but what they would charge is beyond what i can pay. something needs to be done now about this problem because it can only lead to more disastrous events. i vote for a recall immediately!!! *tr

Event: just driving alone look down at the message board and it says powersteering failure, and just like that the powersteering was gone. i was able to maneuver the car over to the side of the road, turn the ignition off and back on which worked for about 2 min and the problem recurred. the car is very difficult to steer without powersteering and the way the problem occurs could easily cause a accident i would think after only 39,000 mile that part would not be worn out. the problem still exist, i have no other transportation. just driving on alert hoping someone will take notice of the issue. *tr

Steering shakes alot on rough roads and sometimes when applying the break. we brought the car in to the dealer a dozen times. they said they do not know what the problem is. we brought it to different dealers and they said it might be the i-shaft we have not fixed this yet because we are still looking for a for sure answer what it is. my future mother in law has a similar car but different year and has the same problem. the started of the shaking both cars had 32000 miles on them. since the start both cars has replaced struts, control arm and tie rods. and we are looking to replace them again. what is causing this shaking? *tr

My daughter's chevrolet cobalt 2007 car's power steering turns-off while driving and makes it a hazard during driving, especially for weaker individuals. the stiffness in steering makes it seem that it is locked. research online shows that even earlier models have this problem. chevrolet engineered making power steering powered electronically vice hydraulics and fluids as with most vehicles. and now, we find that there is no recall from chevrolet and to repair it will cost about $2k. about 1/8 the cost of the vehicle. if were doing the same to a company like toyota, then we should also look at the chevrolet cobalt. *tr

I own a 2007 chevrolet cobalt with roughly 45,000 miles. just recently, the power steering has begun to fail. i will be driving down the highway and, all of a sudden, the steering wheel gets very hard to steer and the power steering failure notification beeps. this has happened 3 times within the last 3 weeks. the first time i was making a right-hand turn and felt the wheel pop. the other 2 times i was just driving down the highway without the wheel turned at all. i have called my local chevrolet dealer and they claim to have never heard of this problem before. i have looked online and have found many people who are complaining about the same problem but say that their chevrolet dealers do not know what is wrong. the 2007 cobalt has an electronic power steering system without the standard hydraulic system and no power steering fluid. this is an extremely dangerous problem. i am driving down the highway at 60+ miles per hour and all of a sudden cannot steer my car. i have to pull over to the side of the road and shut the car off. this seems to reset the computer that runs the power steering and it will resume working once i restart the car. *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt - power steering failure. happens more often when weather/car is warm, particularly when weather is over 75 or 80. most often when car is warm, like during long trips or when driving many places in one day (errands). i have had as many as 5 occurrences on days i am running many errands. the dashboard warning dings and power steering light comes on, the power steering fails and you cannot control the vehicle. normally, you can stop the car, turn off the ignition and restart the car and it will work again for a while. once crashed into my own carport pole, once ran over a curb. no one was hurt, and there was no serious property damage, only a bent support pole on my own carport, but i was lucky i was going extremely slow when this happened. it this happens at a higher speed, or in oncoming traffic, it could cause serious injury or even death. i took the car to a mechanic and was told the entire steering column/system would have to be replaced at a cost of over $2000. i am unable to fix this due to the high cost. this car is a 2007 with only 38,000 miles. should not have major problems like this. *tr

We live in lumberton texas and we had to go to shreveport,la to take a friend of mine to the dentist. on the way home while we were in town the power steering light came on and my husband had trouble steering it around curves and turns. not knowing that it was an electric power steering, he pulled into the store to get power steering fluid. he couldn't find the place to put it so i looked at the book that came with the car and found out. well when we got back in the car to leave it was fine at first, then it started it again and all the way home. we have noticed that when you turn the car off for a while and start it back it does ok for a little while. we have problems with it everyday. once the power steering acts up it stays that way until you turn the car off and let it cool off but after your driving it again its starts all over. we have not had an accident yet and hopefully we don't. it is very hard for me to drive it but i have to use it sometime to go places.we have not had it fixed yet and were told it could cost alot to get it fixed. we don't have the money now to get it fixed. another complaint is well actually was the gear shift. it would not go all the way into park, i guess, and you couldn't get your keys out of the ignition. we have already had that fixed though. there are other complaints i have but probably nothing that would be cover under safety issues. this car is a lemon in my book. *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt -- in december 2009 the power steering went out while exiting interstate. that was near the end of a 2-hour trip. the next day it was working again. since that first incident the power steering has started failing more frequently (almost every time) and on shorter trips. turning off the engine and restarting the car restarts the power steering, however sometimes it recurs within a few minutes. the car is difficult to drive without power steering and i'm afraid it will lead to a wreck. after the first incident we called the local chevrolet dealer service department and was told the car was just out of warranty and therefore we would have to pay for the repair. (this is obviously a manufacturing defect, not a worn out part.) the car is scheduled for repair next week and the service department said could cost about $400. *tr

I purchased a used 2007 chevy cobalt about 2 years ago. there were approximately 11,000 miles on it at the time. early last summer it was nearing the 40,000 mark and my power steering started going out. i assumed that it was out of fluid, so i took the car and had an oil change and all the fluids checked. as i was leaving the mechanic, it went out again. i went back into the office, told them my issue and that's when i found out there was no place to put power steering fluid, that it was a closed transmission. (i later learned that it was electric.) the power steering continued to come and go for another few months. i stopped driving for about 8 weeks and when i resumed driving, it was fine. i thought maybe the problem had fixed itself. it went out again about 6 weeks ago; it had around 41500 mile on it. i live in the back of a neighborhood, where i have to make lots of turns and that is generally where it goes out. i do not do a lot of interstate or highway driving, mostly just inner-city. i rarely travel over 50 mph. because the power steering continues to go out, it makes it hard for me to make turns and drive. i have not yet been involved in any accidents because of the issue, but i have had several close calls. i try to remain extra aware of my surroundings to prevent any incidents. *tr

I bought a 2007 chevy cobalt ls from stearns chevrolet in graham, nc in june 2009 with just a little over 32k mi. some where between 45k & 50k mi. my power steering began to randomly go out. the first time, i was in first gear switching to second on a right hand turn. since then, it happens extremely randomly, usually in town where i have to switch gears the most. if appropriate, i can usually just pop in the clutch & restart the vehicle & it resets the motor and everything is fine for a while, sometimes it just goes right back out. i do not feel safe driving the car but i have no choice. i took the car to the dealer i bought it from (which is now closed) and it was determined that the power steering motor in my electric power steering system had gone bad and gm agreed to pay 1/3 of the $700 to fix it. i did not have the money to fix it. *tr

The vehicle is a 2007 chevrolet cobalt with approximately 62,000 miles on it. it was purchased used a week before incident occurred. my daughter had just got off work and was starting to drive home when she noticed power steering failure message come across the message board on the dash. at the same time she felt the steering get hard to control. she was able to pull over and stop the vehicle without incident. my daughter called home and i went to her location, thinking power steering fluid must be low. to my surprise i learned it had no pump and it was electrical. i restarted the vehicle and message was out and steering appeared to be fine. i drove it home. the next day i went out and after starting vehicle noticed the message coming across the message board read steering problems. i tried to drive the vehicle but it was very hard to maneuver the steering. it had no power assist in the steering. it became sporadic off and on over the next few days. took vehicle to local chevrolet dealer and learned inorder to fix problem, the power assist steering needed to be replace. i had the dealer replace the steering column which housed the power assist computer module and the electric power assist motor. our total expense was $730.27. i learned from the dealership that 2005 thru 2007 model years were known to them to have a problem with power assist steering going out. i still have the old steering unit that was replaced. i read where nhtsa was looking into the steering problem. i just wanted to let agency know i too had a problem with the steering going out. *tr

The electronic power steering went out in my cobalt while driving down the road. the dealership replaced it since it was under warranty, but i have read that this is a frequent problem, and that the units they replace also fail in the same amount of time. i am worried that this will happen again to not only me but someone else. this problem could easily cause an accident if not fixed. *tr

When we drove our 2007 chevy cobalt the power steering went out. we had to stop the car off and re-start it. the power steering came back on but went out again. we were on the highway when it went out and we lost control of the car. we were able to avoid a crash. i took the car to our service guy and we told that it would be about $1200 to fix the problem. at this time we cant afford such a large repair. we were also told that the local dealer was aware of the problems that the model car had been having because they had multiple incidents. *tr

We bought our 19 yr. old daughter a 2007 cobalt last year. she was on her way back to college on interstate and her power steering went out. the car has only 43,000 miles on it and we still owe 4 yrs on it. i was appalled at how many complaints there were about this same problem on the internet. she was scared and crying. she was 4 hrs away from us. this was february 14th 2010. she could of been killed or in a wreak. why has gm not done a recall on these cars? the warranty has run out, so this will be out of pocket for us. this is a very serious problem. i am afraid for her to even drive this car now.should i tell her not to come home any more until somebody does something about this. you can't ignore this. people will get hurt or even worse be killed by this. is that what everyone is waiting for before someone does something? *tr

I made a complaint a month ago on my 2007 chevrolet cobalt. i have to make another one because it is extremely upsetting having to pay a car note every month and have to get to and from work in this unsafe vehicle. all these complaints pouring in have proved it is a consistent problem. everyday i drive my car and have to deal with never being able to make a safe u-turn or park in a near parking spot in which i can not due to my electric power steering is completely out. it doesn't even restart after cutting the car off. it is unsettling to know i am and many others are driving an unsafe car and i'm left with no other choice as to the many other people with the same problem. i know there is an investigation out on this car and the eps because the amount of complaints. i really hope it doesn't take so long that a serious accident happens from this. it would make no sense whatsoever to pay the amount of money it cost to fix this problem and it is not promised to fix the problem, it's a 2007 to make matters worse this should not be happening already. thank you nhtsa for looking into this matter. *tr

I purchased a new 2007 chevy cobalt 4-door in june 2007--in september i told my mother that my steering was strange, that sometimes i felt like i wasn't really steering my car. in october i was on my way to work on the highway, it was raining and i slowed down. upon slowing down to approx 15-20 around a curve i couldn't steer my car. i was in an accident because my car just seemed to go on its' own. that same december, i was turning into a school parking lot and again couldn't steer my car and hit a parking block. my mom thought it was my tires and invested in a new set of tires on a new car. two weeks ago (again on the highway) i came upon an accident, slowed down to almost a complete stop and once again lost my steering just long enough to turn the car a little trying to get it over to the shoulder, hit the guardrail support and smashed the headlight. i backed up, felt my steering grab and continued on. my steering i am convinced caused all 3 accidents. there is still damage on my car and my insurance rates have gone up. i want my damage fixed, my steering fixed, my mom reimbursed $500.00 for my deductible and a letter i can give my auto insurance company. it occurs fairly frequently, but luckily there has only been three accidents and no fatalities there is still damage on the vehicle because i can't turn it into my insurance company without my rates going up. when i told people at the dealership what was going on they thought i was nuts and so did i until a tow driver who also happened to own a cobalt had the same thing happen. *tr

My 2007 chevy cobalt's power steering keeps going in and out, causing a tremendous disadvantage when trying to steer the car. i have had one incident of sideswiping a pole because i could not make the turn as the power steering failed at that point. it has failed multiples times over the last 8 months. so far no injuries or major accidents, but am concerned as there is no warning when it goes out. *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt ls. for approx 3 months i have been having problems starting my car due to the steering wheel being locked up. since then, i have had various types of rattling, vibrations, and complications with my steering column. today (february 9, 2009) i went to leave for work and my key only went to the first position (not start position) and is currently stuck there. my steering wheel wont move, and nothing, nothing, worked on trying to remove my stuck key. i have had a mechanic look at it, and he believes that it is the steering column now interfering with the ignition. i am very very upset that this has happened, however, i'm glad this was not while i was driving. this type of incident is exactly why there needs to be a recall. i love my car, but the safety issues need to be fixed!! *tr

Vehicle is 2007 chevy cobalt. the electronic power assist fails repeatedly and make for a very unsafe situation. gm refused to acknowledge the problem when i first contacted them. we have since had the system repaired out of pocket. my research on the internet found this problem has existed for several years. your jumping all over toyota right now, so let see you jump on general motors a bit. incidentally this is not an isolated incident, before we had the vehicle repaired it couldn't make it out of the driveway without the power steering going out. *tr

My daughter was driving to work around 7:30 a.m., on the highway in rush hour traffic, so was only traveling around 30 -35 mph at the most. she somehow lost control of her vehicle, veered off the road, hit the guard railing and took out about 15 - 20 ft. of it, and landed down a small embankment. no other cars were involved. she had no idea how this happened, nobody had hit her, the roads were clear, no bad weather, no traffic problems, just slow moving traffic. her car was totaled!!! after hearing of the steering related problems with the cobalt, this would certainly explain what happened to her. she did hurt her neck and back and was taken by ambulance to the er, scared to death!. luckily she was not seriously hurt, but bruised and sore muscles, with muscle spasms for about 3 months after accident. she had owned this car less than 1 year. chevy and the nhtsa definitely needs to look into this and recall the cobalts so this doesn't happen to others! *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt, and at around 45,000 miles the power steering simply went out while i was going down the road. the cab was filled with a burning smell, and the vehicle became nearly impossible to turn. i pulled over and turned the car off. i waited about 3 minutes and restarted the car and the power steering was working again. i began driving again, and made it about two or three more blocks when it went out again, and again the car was filled with a burning smell. i contacted a chevy dealer who told me there was a service bulletin out saying that the whole steering column needed to be replaced due to a faulty power assist motor. this starts at around $2500. i did some research online and found that hundreds.. maybe thousands of people were having the same problem with the same car. many had paid the $2,000-$2,500 to have this motor replaced only to have the same problem reoccur weeks later. so, i have yet to have it fixed. today i got a recall notice for a fuel pump on this car, but chevy still refuses to correct the faulty power assist motor which acts as the power steering. its only a matter of time before someone losing steering on a major highway and deaths occur. as for my chevy cobalt.. its parked in my driveway until i can finish paying it off, and then i'll be calling a junkyard to come get it. just a thought... but its amazing how for any other product.. a dishwasher... a child's toy.. if a company sells a faulty product, you can take it back to the store and get your money back legally... if its a car, you're stuck. *tr

I purchased a used 2007 chevy cobalt on december 30, 2009. since the purchase, it has had intermittent power steering failure. last week, during a 7 mile trip, the power steering failed on four occasions. previously, turning car off and then back on resolved the issue. however, since this issue was getting worse, we took the car into a chevy dealership for service. they ran diagnostics and reported that it needed a new power steering motor. this was replaced for a total of $371 plus diagnostics for $95. this car has less than 45,000 miles on it. apparently this is an issue with cobalts - recall might be a good solution!! this car was being driven by a 16 year-old driver. thankfully she was able to control the car when the power steering failed and no accidents occured.

The power steering function would randomly go out on the 2007 chevrolet cobalt. this occurred at various speeds and at various times of driving. this started with an approximate mileage of 43k and began occurring early in 2009. the power steering mechanism was replaced in early march 2009. i do not have the old part. the primary driver of this vehicle was a 16 year old and i felt i had no choice but to get this repair. i did some research of my own and found a technical bulletin (bulletin 07-02-32-007) issued regarding this problem. i brought this up to the dealership and told them i thought this was a safety issue and that a recall should be done by chevrolet. i also wrote a letter to general motors expressing my concern for the safety of other drivers out there and the fact that his power steering failure happened so early in the vehicles life. luckily, my daughter was neither injured or any property damage was done to my vehicle or others but it was very scary to her to have the power steering fail when traveling down the interstate. *tw

2007 chevrolet cobalt. i was driving going about 40 mph when power steering flashed across the screen. although it wasn't impossible to steer, it was very difficult and very dangerous, as i was on a very cramped road. i then turned off my car, and when i turned it back on, it began to work again, about 2 miles down the road, power steering flashed across the screen once again, and it was no longer working. i have done nothing to correct this as of right now(just happened yesterday) but i have been doing research and have found hundreds of pages and forums regarding this topic. *tw

While driving at slower speeds the electric power assist steering stops working. this has only happened 4 times but it is very scary almost resulting in 1 accident. i refuse to pay the money they want to change the power assist motor when it should be fixed for free as a safety problem. also i would hate for gm to put the same type of part in instead of a safer updated one. i do not want to have a false sense of security. saying there has not been any deaths is not a valid defense. just think about turning right from a side street onto a busy road and your steering assist goes out. you run almost head on into a minivan with a mother driving 4 children to school. the minivan bounces off of your car and then off of a guard rail on the other side on the road. the minivan flips on its side killing two of the children and seriously injuring the mother. is this an acceptable loss as long as gm does not have to pay out any money for a recall? as far as i am concerned the people at gm who are saying the power steering assist is not a problem would be guilty of murder if they made every attempt to not fix an unsafe condition. just a short story and just my opinion. *tr

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt ls. on more then 10 occasions, i've had my car in reverse to pull into a parking spot or operating my car at low speed while trying to make a turn either left or right. i will get a message in the message center that says check powering steering, and the power steering will go out on the vehicle making it virtually impossible to navigate. to temporarily correct this problem, i must turn the car off and restart it, it then operates as normal. *tr

I knew ever since i purchased the vehicle with 29,000 miles that there was a problem with the power steering motor on my 2007 chevy cobalt. during a driving test, my daughter couldn't turn the wheel. the motor overheated. we took it to a auto shop and they said the motor will continue to do it because of the way it was made and there was nothing he could do but that i should complain to chevy. one day in november 2009, it overheated and i couldn't turn the wheel which caused me to run up a curb. my tire was damaged and i had to be towed to a repair shop. it cost me 50.00 for the tow and around 200.00 for a new tire, wheel alignment and labor. the mechanic said it is a bad design, that they should've removed the motor and replaced it with a traditional pump. he said that will be the only way to correct the problem. it overheats daily and it is impossible to steer-especially for a small female. chevy should have to replace these motors before someone gets killed. *tr

My chevy cobalt power steering keeps going out. i understand i am not alone with this problem. chevy needs to recall the cobalt. i took my car to a gm dealer and was told that it would cost me $60.00 just to look at my car. i was also quoted $900.00 to fix this problem. i feel that gm needs to pay for the correction of this problem. *tr

I was driving home doing approximately 45 miles per hour when my power steering failed to operate. it was very difficult to maneuver the car off the highway to get to safety. after i shut the car off and restarted it the power steering reset itself and it was fine to drive. this has happened at least 4 times in the last 3 weeks. i took it into the dealership and they have informed me that the power steering motor needs to be replaced at a cost of over $1,000. *tr

While driving my 2007 chevy cobalt on 1/31/10, my power steering light came on and i lost the ability to drive with power steering. i shut the car off, checked belts and fluid, all were fine. i restarted the car and had no further issues that day. on 2/2 /10, while driving, again the same light came on and power steering was gone. i pulled off to the side of the road, shut off the car, waited a minute and restarted it. again the problem cleared itself. i have made an appt. with the service dept. of bob johnson chevrolet in rochester, ny for repairs on 2/4/10. *tr

I was driving my 2007 chevy cobalt ss coupe down u.s. highway 84 in hinesville, georgia when my power steering suddenly failed without warning. i received a message on the hud in the car that said power steering and the wheel immediately became extremely difficult to turn, regardless of the speed of the vehicle. i drove the vehicle home carefully as it was within half a mile of my residence and turned it off. several hours later i turned it on and the problem was mysteriously gone. i attempted to drive down the road to the store and the same issue occurred again. i made it back home and have yet to drive the vehicle again. i contacted the chevrolet dealership where my vehicle was purchased and advised them of the situation and asked for an estimated price on repairs. they told me they could not give me an estimate and that all i could do was have my vehicle towed to their shop for a diagnostics scan. as of yet, i have declined to take the vehicle in as i have done research online and noticed many accounts of people with the same problem i am currently having. *tr

I have had my 2007 cobalt back to the dealer so many times. one of which was for strut mounts, control arm bushings, intermediate steering shaft, sway bar links, alot water coming in through the center brake light. those were replaced and very bad at 48k miles they told me it had reached the dangerous level and that they're glad i brought it back before somebody got hurt. also the ac smelled terrible at 12k miles, it was in the dealer 7 times for that terrible smell. the last of which took them a week to put in an evaporator which only cured the issue for 3 weeks. it still smells awful when the a/c is running. as far as the car's suspension, since december it has been very hard to manage the car on the road. its all over the place, i've almost side swiped a few semi's and i cross into other lanes almost every day i drive it. its very hard to handle. its is just about impossible to make the car go straight, its always drifting all over the road now. *tr

On my 2007 chevrolet cobalt, the (electric) power steering suddenly failed twice in two days. the dashboard warning light power steering came on and the steering wheel suddenly became very hard to turn. both times were at low road speed, in cold ohio february weather. my 17 year old daughter was driving both times; it is her car to drive. the first time she had been driving about 6 miles and was approaching our driveway. she hit a curb when the steering failed while she was turning into the driveway. when she turned the car's engine off and restarted it, the steering and warning lights returned to normal. the second time was 24 hours later when she was backing out of a parking spot after the car was parked for about 3 hours. again, turning off the car and starting it again made the problem go away. i am very concerned about my daughter's and other's safety if the power steering were to fail at higher speeds or in heavy traffic. *tr

My grandfather and i each bought a 2007 chevy cobalt and ever since we have had them they seem to just be falling apart around us. my number one problem with the car is the power steering. it keeps going out and is very hard to steer and keep under control if it goes out when im driving high speeds on the interstate. it never really bothered me until today because i was driving down fm 1406 and there was a dog in the middle of the road, i tried maneuvering around the animal but i wasn't able to, when i tried to swerve to avoid the dog i could barely move the wheel. i killed the dog. my number one concern is that dog could have easily been a child or a grown up simply wanting to cross the street. i don't want to drive this vehicle anymore and i know many people out there don't either but what choice do we have, we cant go on with our daily routines with out these cobalts we are all so heavily relying on. basically were !@#$% if we do and !@#$% if we don't. both power steering went out in the cars, mine a few months after my grandfathers. what's funny is that we both bought the vehicles on the same day and both cars power steering went out....wow that's really lame. *tr

I have a 2007 chevy cobalt. on 01/30/10 i was driving down the road when i heard ding ding ding i looked down to my dash board and saw it said power steering my car then got really hard to steer. so i pulled over and turned my car off and then back on and i was able to steer fine again. since then i haven't wanted to drive my car, in fear that i will not be able to steer. i researched this problem and i saw that alot of people are also having the same problems with their cobalts. this is not our fault so we shouldn't have to pay to get it fixed. *tr

I am very upset at the fact that i just read all the complaints on the electrical power steering in the chevrolet cobalt. the same problem i have. i work and pay monthly payments on a 2007 chevrolet cobalt ls that is having these problems. gm should do something, or is it going to be when someone dies as a result of this. steering is a very important component to a vehicle. i refuse to pay the large amount of money that it's going to cost to get it fixed and the dealer can't promise it won't happen again. people invest money into a newer car not to have to pay for problems this early on!. my car evens stalls once in awhile when i first start it and without even mashing the gas you'll hear the ignition run hard for a few seconds like it's starting itself. *tr

The power steering of my 2007 chevy cobalt went out nov 27, 2009, late at nite on i-95 - freaked me out and caused me to be stranded! no dealerships service dept. open on weekends, so i gave up and drove it back to florida on sunday (took 10 hours). anyway, called local dealership, chevy corporate and filed a complaint with nhtsa... unfortunately i had no choice but to take it to dealer for diagnostics and then call corporate back where they said they might be able to assist with repairs but wouldn't know until diagnostics were done... dealership informed me that they believe the problem could be solved by replacing the power steering motor if i would only pay $350 for labor (they would generously donate the motor...) i declined (for now anyway) as we will try to repair it ourselves... i cannot afford to pay for this and shouldn't have to as the car isn't that old. the warranty just ran out in september as seems to be the case for many who's blogs i have read. they also noted on the summary that the motor might not actually take care of the problem and if it didn't then they would have to replace the steering column for another $800 plus labor !! my car has not yet been repaired and is still dangerous so i don't drive it unless i just have to go somewhere and have no other option. *tr

I own a 2007 chevy cobalt. it is 2 years old and at approximately 58,000 miles the car's power steering began to intermittently fail. the only way to regain the steering is to turn the car off and then back on, which is dangerous in traffic. this happens somewhat randomly, but occurs within a few minutes of starting the car 80% of the time. on jan 25th the power steering went out as i was about to make a left turn and having to overcompensate for the hard steering wheel almost caused me to hit an oncoming car. after resolving to try and get this repaired, i checked into the problem online and have found multiple websites with over 1,000 consumers who complain about power steering failure on all models of the chevy cobalt. a couple of these are http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-cobalt/t8fmsuqb7v2dth5jh/p36 and http://getsatisfaction.com/gm/topics/cobalt_power_steering and http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/chevy-cobalt-power-steering-issues. a repair charge of $800 - $2000 is needed to fix the problem which is not covered by the factory warranty, and in some cases is recurring. gm refuses to acknowledge that this is a very frequent and dangerous problem and refuses to modify their warranty to fix it. there is no info on their website despite thousands of obvious complaints and widespread failure of this part that, when fails, creates unsafe conditions for everyone on the road. i have heard that class action lawsuits are in the works, and i am going to try and start one myself, but we'd all really like to see gm acknowledge this problem, make an effort to fix this plague on their customers, and issue a recall. *cn

My husband and i have a 2007 chevy cobalt ltz , for about three weeks we had been noticing vibrations in the steering. also when braking the steering would shake. during that time we got a letter from our dealership about the side airbags. they said that they had sold it as if it had side airbags, but it didn't have any.on our way up there to the dealership we began to experience tightness in the steering just as we started on the interstate . we had not gone very far when our cobalt began to fish tail and my husband was unable to control the car and we then went into two 360s and began to roll according to witnesses we rolled 4 or 5 times before the car rested on the right side. also front airbags did not come out. it felt as if the car had no power steering at all. *tr

Within a month of purchasing a new 2007 chevy cobalt - i began hearing rattling noises from my vehicle. i have had the car in for repairs numerous times. multiple components have been replaced and or repaired. i currently have 15,000 miles on the vehicle - to this day i can still hear rattling noises and clunking noise coming from the steering-suspension. the mechanics have now told me they don't know what's wrong and suggested i try a different dealership. i have contacted chevy and received no help in settling this issue. if chevy would of had their return policy when i purchased - i would of gladly returned the vehicle - i make car payments on a lemon. i don't even like my daughter to ride in the vehicle for fear of her safety. i fear i will be driving down the road the front end will fall apart. it scares me to death. *tr

Bought 2007 chevy cobalt used from a local car dealer last march, went on a family trip to the smoky mountains and while going through the mountains power steering goes completely out. stopped at the visitor center and my father tries to see what is wrong. he cant find the power steering pump/fluid because we didn't know it was electronic. the problem persisted through out the trip but as we got back the problem seemed to stop, then a few weeks later the power steering constantly goes out. this problem occurs every time i drive my car, it has made driving an annoying task and i have come close to multiple collisions during the failure. this has also caused me physical pain in both my wrist and elbow while trying to turn my car. nothing has been done to correct this due to lack of finance and my research on the topic said it costs around $4000 to correct. *tr

Power steering goes out without warning. i went to the chevy dealer who acknowledged it is an electronic assist and their have been some problems. it is not covered under the extended warranty. their is no notice prior to the failure and no set of duplicating conditions which initiate the problem. this would appear to be chevrolet design flaw. i found out that this is a major problem with the cobalt series of vehicles and saw many internet related sites one of which directed me here. i believe chevy is aware of the problem and will not remedy the situation until prompted by a major lawsuit from a death or the intervention of the government. at the cost for a replacement it will be a buying decision for most consumers as the problem continues to be intermittent. *tr

The power steering fails every several minutes under normal driving conditions. after restarting the vehicle, the problem disappears for less than 5 minutes. this sudden and unexpected failure makes driving extremely difficult and dangerous. as an infrequent driver (less than 3,000 / miles per year) i have not taken the steps necessary to remedy this issue myself...public transportation is safer and widely available. *tr

Power steering light pops on and power steering goes out. car is under three years old. this is a known very common problem with these cars. completely unacceptable. happens over and over, once you turn the car off and back on it will work again until the next occurrence which could be two minutes later or fifteen minutes later. i cannot afford to replace this so nothing has been done about it the quote to get it repaired was around $2000. these should be recalled!!! *tr

While driving my car , the dash will ding three times, flash power steering and then the steering wheel will lock up. i will have to pull over, turn the engine off, and restart the car. upon restarting the car, it will work fine. this will happen several times in a row. it is a hassle while driving, i've had to stop in the middle of the road to turn my car off at times when there isn't a shoulder to pull off on. from what i have read, this is something that happens a lot with 2006-2007 model cobalts, cost upward t $1000-$2000 to fix and obviously needs to be recalled. *tr

2007 chevrolet cobalt with power steering system failure. the car currently has 67,000 miles and had not had any issues with it until this randomly happened on the street. a power steering message came up on the dashboard of the car and seemingly the steering column locked up. this was with my 2 year old nephew in the car. i am glad i was not on the freeway when this happened. after that occurrence it has continually happened over the last 2 weeks every time the car is used. it is random and there is no pattern to what sets it off. the power steering fails and it is dangerous to drive that way. i cannot afford to take it back to the dealership to pay the $2000 they want to fix this dangerous issue, so this is still occurring. i am trying to find another way to get this fixed but this needs action against as there are countless others that are experiencing this as well. *tr

Beginning about 2 weeks ago, i have had issues with my power steering. it will arbitrarily shut off while driving and the screen on the dash board will flash power steering. i have to pull over and shut the car off, and upon restart the problem is fixed. so far i have not had any real safety issues, but this will cause a severe issue one of these days while i am on the roads. i looked online and saw that i am not the only person with the exact same issue with this vehicle, give or take a year. a recall should be made asap before it causes serious injuries to drivers or passengers.. *tr

I have an 07 chevy cobalt. i've been reading online about the problems with the electronic power steering going out on people, and i've been experiencing the same exact problem. this is very dangerous, for i will be driving along on my way to school or work and the steering essentially shuts off, and is so hard to steer that a strong 185-pound man, such as myself, can barely move the steering wheel. this has happened both on the freeway and on normal roads. it is worse on the normal roads, because i can't even turn off onto a parking lot or side street to get out of the way. this problem has been known about for years now, and chevy has done nothing to fix the problem (a faulty electronic motor that chevy admits wears out after a certain amount miles, so even if you take it to get it fixed it will just go out again) and you people have not enforced a recall. this problem is becoming more frequent, and one of these days someone is going to lose their life or kill someone else because of this. i've been reading numerous complaints that others have been contacting you people about this issue, and yet nothing has been done. fix it before i or someone else gets killed because of this ridiculous piece of hardware! *tr

I was driving to tn from florida on i95 in sc when the power steering on my 2007 chevy cobalt went out. i pulled off at exit 60 to buy power steering fluid (thinking that was the problem) turns out the cobalt has electronic power steering! anyway, turned the car back on as i couldn't just sit at the exit forever (it was very late at nite). power steering worked fine! but only for a few minutes. it went out again after i got back on i-95! so i pulled over again, turned the car off then restarted and it worked! back on interstate, it goes out again! so this went on and is still the case (it is now monday and i made it back to florida after a very long drive due to not having power steering and no choice but to come home.) called dealership and chevy corporate and they do not know what the problem is and are not sure they can take care of this problem. i have read many blogs and posts about this problem and feel it should be placed on the recall list and taken care of by chevy and not the consumer! any help would be much appreciated as i do not have the money for this very expensive repair. chevy should not be placing so many unsafe vehicles on the road. thank you. *tr

The electric power steering assists goes out without prior warning and stays off until the cars is turned off and restarted. once the car has been restarted the power assist stays on for an indeterminate period of time before going out again. this happened four times today alone. this has happened while traveling at various speeds from 25mph to 65 mph. it doesn't seem to be triggered by the amount of time or miles driven and is totally unexpected. when the power steering assist goes out steering becomes immediately stiff and requires quite an effort. if this were to happen while entering a sharpe turn it could easily have tragic consequences. *tr

I was driving my car on a straight stretch of road for about 5 miles at about 45 mph when the car's information screen read power steering and the wheel locked up. i was able to safely pull into my place of work but with a lot difficulty as the power steering was out. i turned the car off and then on again the problem was gone. i took it to the dealership the next day and they said it was a very common problem and they would need to replace the steering column. this is an extremely dangerous problem and needs to be addressed by gm. how many accidents need to happen before gm does something about this. i have an earlier model of this same car and have the same issue now only gm refuses to fix it because it is past it's warranty period. this is a serious defect and i now im not the only one having this issue. two of the same model cars with the same issue at the same house is a problem. *tr

While driving my chevrolet cobalt the power steering will cut out. the only way to get it to come back on is to turn the ignition off and start it back up. you do not have to turn the car off, just to acc. thankfully this has only happened to me while i had to negotiate turns at slow speeds and straight roads of 45+. i would not like this problem to occur while i am on the highway at speeds of 55+. *tr

Steering wheel shaking makes noise, popping, grinding while driving and turning then doesn't feel right. have had the problem four times this is the fifth time. the steering column and parts have been replaced four times this would be the fifth we were told by the first tech the steering wheel column would fall off in our hands and we wouldn't be able to steer the car and we have been fishing over this safteyissue with gm since . before there is a fatality they keep replacing it cost money we are without vehicle for time to fix stress neverknowing if or when it will fall off we don't want to die in a car accident or kill someone they will not replace the car keep saying its safe thenwhy do they have too keep replacing it if it isn't a defect in how its attached to frame. we are scared enough to keep taking it back when it starts making the noise etc instead of waiting for it to fall off in our hands or lock up so we couldn't steer enough is enough we don't know what else to do or how to get help we still owe on the car bought it new and this all started 4-6 months after we bought it. *tr

Last year a bought a 2007 chevy cobalt for my daughter who had just turned 17. the car rode smoothly and i was impressed with the overall handling. this unfortunately only lasted for 9 months. my daughter was driving home from work at 1230am on sunday night only to call me hysterical that the steering got hard all of a sudden. i told her to calm down and pull over and i would be there as quickly as i could. well after explaining to an officer that stopped me for speeding, the officer and i both got to my daughter and sure enough, the power steering did fail on her. i proceeded to drive the car home carefully, and ever since then the steering has been an ongoing problem. i can't unload the car cause i owe $9000 on it. so now i'm researching to replace what i need to replace on this piece of junk. i do hear a click under the dash right when the steering gives out, so i'm replacing both the power steering control module and the assist motor. here's hoping this solves the problem. to gm, i am never, ever buying another vehicle made by you again!! may you mercilessly go out of business once and for all. we could use another domestic car maker to replace your incompetence. *tr

2007 cobalt lt with 40,000 miles on it--two weeks ago i was driving it when the warning light flashed power steering and 2 seconds later there was no power steering--fortunately i was in a parking lot so i pulled over turned it off and went inside to complete my business (including buying some power steering fluid-what a waste f money that was) when i started it up again it was fine and it drove just fine --very limited use though. the exact same thing happened 8 days later. so i took it to dealer for routing maintenance and to have it checked. they said the electric steering was bad and that i would have to replace the entire steering column for $800 (this did not include the $100 they charged to tell me this) per a bulletin put out by chevrolet. i took the car and contacted chevrolet about it. in the mean time my nineteen year old nice borrowed the car and it happened to her as she was driving on the highway at 70 miles per hour--luckily she was able to get to the side of the road without incident. i bought this car for my 76 year old mother and fortunately it has not happened to her because she would not be able to control it. so basically she has a car right now that she can not use. *tr

In july 2008 my 2007 cobalt starting making thunking and clunking noises when turning or going over bumps. the local gm dealer found a warn sway bar link and a problem with the steering column, both of which they replaced. in january 2009 the same noise started again when i would go over bumps. this primarily would happen at lower speeds (20-45 mph). i brought the car back to my local gm dealer and they found a loose sway bar link and replaced it. now, in february 2009, the same noise is occuring going over bumps at lower speeds. i had an independent mechanic inspect the car and he found the back bushings of the front control arm are bad and the front passenger side strut is leaking. this car has only 28,000 miles on it, and is only 18 months old. i plan on taking the car back to the dealer it was originally purchased from on monday 2/23/09 to have these issued hopefully resolved. *tr

Power steering cuts out intermittently. it happens even when steering wheel is straight, or when it is being turned. at highway speeds, it is difficult to control, but not impossible. at low speeds, the car is nearly impossible to turn unless on loose gravel. nearly hit a car in the other lane. had computer checked at chevy dealership near new paltz, ny and was told the entire steering column had to be replaced. gm informed us that there is nothing they can do, yet internet forums show many complaints of the same sort, many of which have been reported to gm as well. (website of forums - http://www.topix.com/forum/autos/chevrolet-cobalt/t8fmsuqb7v2dth5jh) we have not replaced the steering column due to the fact that this is obviously a part defect. this issue of power steering cutting out continues to get worse over time. *tr

While driving e. on highway 60 in az, i noticed my steering wheel sticking once in a while. after driving thru devel's canyon the steering kept pulling to the right a little then it would stop pulling, over and over. when i was on flat road again the steering pulled real sharp to the right and would not turn left, after a second of this the steering finally freed itself again but making the steering very touchy, when this happened the car started sweerving side to side and ended up hitting the guard rail on the east bound side of the highway. i was going aprox. 52 mph in a 55 mph area. when i hit the guard rail the car hit almost head on and the air bags never went off.

Purchased new cobalt 2007 in august of 2006. began noticing hydroplaning and control problems. now that it is winter, the car will not steer, it pulls and the traction is terrible. i have been stuck several times. i no longer permit my wife to drive on the interstate for fear of a collision or worse. we have parked the vehicle and contacted our dealer with several complaints only to fall on deaf ears. the proper channels to report this has been followed but tp no avail has anything been done to replace the tires (safety first) and we feel something should be done before a serious injury or death occurs. we have searched and found numerous problems with the touring contact as tire and believe that ours has some very serious problems. we need help now. *nm

Re: 2007 chevrolet cobalt. spokane, wa. events: in a mix of ice, deep slush and snow (with michilin x-ice winter tires on all four wheels), very slippery conditions, low speed (e.g., driving down alley from my garage), failure: the electronic steering became erratic. i felt out of control, couldn't keep the car moving directly forward until i slowed to almost a stop. this was not slipping or skidding that occurs when sliding on ice or snow. rather, it was the steering wheel having a feel of being disconnected from the wheels. what was done: no repair was sought. i just was especially careful at low speeds. in normal driving, even in icy or snowy condition on the highway at higher speeds there was no problem steering. the steering problem occurred on every occasion throughout the winter that the specific conditions outlined above occurred. *tr

Power steering randomly stops/starts working. during a mid way through a turn with the car, power steering on dash came on and it was a real struggle to maintain control of the car and continue turning without entering the other lane. car has been into the dealership once already for the problem at which time they indicated it was the clutch switch(?). car is two weeks old and has 850 miles on it. *tr

STEERING - RACK AND PINION
10/27/200951000
Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet cobalt. she stated while driving at speeds of less than 60 mph on the highway in light rain conditions, she heard a loud boom and screeching sound. immediatley afterward, the vehicle began to pull to the left. she attempted to steer the vehicle off the highway however, the vehicle would not respond to her steering. she then tapped on the brakes and the vehicle spun out of control until the vehicle was now proceeding backward. the vehicle then proceeded up a nearby grassy hill, turning out of control until she was able to turn the vehicle front ward. the brakes and steering still would not respond to driver initiation. the vehicle then proceeded back down the grassy hill and back toward traffic. the vehicle stopped once back onto the cement pavement. the front driver's side wheel was totally collapsed outward and the tire was shredded. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they found the rack and pinion failed, however they would not take any liability for the failures. they stated she must have hit something in the highway to have experienced catastrophic failures. the contact was sure she did not hit anything in the road and the failure was unexpected and unexplained. no repairs were made to the vehicle, to date. the failure and current mileages were 51,000.
STEERING - WHEEL AND HANDLE BAR

I have had to replace the sway bar links, control arm bushing and the shifter in order to get my car inspected this year. another problem i have is the blinkers not making the clicking sound, they work but i was told i have to replace my front speaker. i feel like that is a lot to go wrong with a vehicle in one year. i also think that these problems shouldn't have happened this early. i only have 57,000 miles on my car. something should be done with these vehicles seeing how there are many other people having the same problems with their cars.

I own a 2007 chevrolet cobalt, which i drive like an old lady. it only has 39,997 miles on it, and about 6 months ago, it started making a clunking/rattling noise underneath, by the wheels. we checked under it and nothing appeared loose. it is currently driving ok, but the noise/rattling metal noise is getting much louder, and i took it in to my dealer today. (4/27/11) they told me i need to have my front & rear bushings replaced. i do not drive this car out of town, because i cannot afford to have this repair done, right now. after reading the information on your website from other cobalt owners, i know that i have the same problem, and am angry that this kind of repair needs to be done this early in my car ownership. this definitely should be a problem that should be investigated and should be a recall item for this cobalt model. we do not live on bad roads, i do not drive hard, and everyone says this should not be happening on a car that is so new, and has so few miles.
