Gm is not fixing the whole power steering issue in their cobalts. i had the recall fixed, the power steering motor, on 10/10/12 and three days later it failed again. i was exiting i95 in wilmington, de and was very close to hitting the concrete divider on the exit ramp to us 202. the problem with the car is the whole steering column is faulty. looking around in the internet shows many others that were told they needed to replace the steering column to fix the power steering issue, same as my dealer told me. but all gm is doing is fixing the cheapest part. i have tried their customer service and get nowhere. they say they fixed my power steering problem and get all defensive when i tell them that it still happens. it happens after driving about 200-250 miles. local trips are fine except that the steering looses feel and shakes and feels bumpy in the steering wheel. for the safety of all people on the road i feel you guys should test some cobalts on a good 300 mile trip and see what happens. i'll even lend mine to you if you want. *tr

I noticed a slight tapping/rattling noise coming from the front driver side. the noise only occurs between the speeds of 50-60 mph and only when letting off the gas completely. then i received in the mail an ignition cylinder recall. my car had problems with locking up and difficulties turning the key. so i took the car to the dealership told them about the noise i was hearing then waited a week with no call from the dealership so i called them. they told me my car would be finished by noon, i arrived at 4 pm. they then told me my car was not yet finished. the dealership had not even put in the new ignition cylinder even after a week. i was told the noise could not be replicated. i waited for the ignition to be put in (about 30 mins) then took one of the dealership mechanics on a test drive to hear the noise. noise was heard and took it back to the shop. checked under the car and nothing wrong could be found. the lead mechanic took it for a test drive but due to the heavy downpour of rain nothing was heard. i was asked to bring the car back on monday due to possible severity of the situation. dropped the car back off at the dealership monday. a test drive and a look under the car and they found the problem, noise coming from rack and pinion while hitting bumps rack worn and needs replacement steering column making noise as well recommend replacement with out replacement the car would eventually have no steering ability at all: cost $1524 no warranty. this car has had the power steering recall replacement (the steering wheel suddenly stopped working while in a parking lot due to broken pinion) in 2010 and a transmission issue (rpm rev when the car hit 40 when the gas was not being applied) that was a worn seal it was fixed and covered by warranty in 2011. this would be the twice now with no steering ability only its a different cause? i feel like i'm being cheated. *tr

At approximately 7:55 a.m. on monday, april 16th, i was driving south on state route 605 to work (center village/new albany ohio area). going on a straight road, and at 50 mph, i felt the steering wheel become a little spongy as i was driving when i was making a small correction in the steering wheel to ensure i was properly in my lane. when i moved the steering wheel to right a fraction, the car drifted to the right as it should. however, upon making a correction to the left the car's steering wheel became impossible to turn. because of this the car veered right striking a mailbox and crashing into some trees. the car is severely damaged and the insurance company is looking at it today. i had the electrical steering box replaced last year. the driver side airbag went off as it should but the car ended up on its side.

As i was backing out of my driveway the power steering suddenly stopped working. the light on the dashboard came up power steering so i went to an auto zone where they told me they couldn't find power steering fluid and it was apparently an electronic steering system. i called a dealer in town and they looked up the vin and told me that it had been serviced under a recall. i then called gm and was told that gm would not cover the service costs again, most likely. i was asked if i had owned other gm vehicles and asked what that had anything to do with it. i was not given an answer but the dealer that i eventually took it to said that it of course matters, because if you haven't bought gm in the past or will not in the future why would they want to help you?. obviously they should want to help me because it is a faulty product and potentially deadly. i was told by gm that they will most likely only cover once on a recall whether the problem was fixed or not??? i found out the dealer where the work had been done and went to have it looked at. the dealer tried to tell me that there was no way it could have anything to do with the original problem on the recall. i told him that it would seem to be commom sense that it was. he also said that regardless, their service warranty runs out in 12 months and it was past. they eventually fixed it at no charge but i was told there was no guarantee that it was fixed and that it could very possibly go out at any time again. obviously the recall did not fix all of the problems and this part can fail again at any time causing a very dangerous situation

I bought a new 08 cobalt in sept 08. i have had to have two steering columns put in, a power steering pump, stabilizer bars, front end bushings and bearings, and now a rack pinion (along with multiple other unrelated repairs). i took the car back to the dealer (ron marhoffer stow oh) after each repair and was told that there was nothing wrong with the steering or suspension of the car. the car would pull out of my lane to the left and was very difficult to control. i actually lost control of the car and went into a ditch on one occasion. i do not believe that the dealer knows how to fix the problem and therefor just keeps throwing parts in it. however the problem still exists. it is very dangerous. the dealer also replaced multiple fornt end parts including stabilzer bars, bearing and bushings on oth fron wheels tryng to correct the steering problem. i also have had to replace the tires on the car twice on the front end due to abnormal wear and tear from the car constantly pulling while driving.

Transmission module failure leads to temporary power steering failure. while driving my 2008 chevy cobalt, the instrument cluster started malfunctioning. the speedometer, tachometer, and fuel gauge all started bouncing around erratically. the driver information center started flashing power steering. this all took place while i was driving the car on the freeway ay about 60 mph. as i was trying to pull to the breakdown lane the power steering failed. i thought the power steering pump went out. after getting the car to the side of the road and turning it off i called my mechanic. he told me he heard of this before and told me to restart the car. i did and everything was back to normal. i drove straight to his shop where he plugged in his diagnostic check computer. he told me the problem was with the transmission module and is a well know problem with the chevy cobalt. i have since googled it and found many cobalt owners are experiencing the same problem. i spoke to chevrolet customer service and was told that because my car has 125,000 miles it is out of warranty and not covered. i don't care so much about that as the potential safety hazard. if the power steering fails while on the road again it could lead to an accident. it has happened twice since and i have managed to pull over before the steering shut down. is this an issue you could look into on these cars?

The steering in my car all of a sudden became hard to control, hard to turn and you have to pull the steering wheel back after a turn and then the car jerks. this happened after my car was recalled for power steering defects, and after the appropriate work was done to replace the recalled part. i now have a problem with my power steering ( even though i had no previous steering difficulties prior t recall ). that the mechanics at the dealership have been unable to diagnose as aparently it is not the power steering( yet two other mechanics from other shops are reporting to me that it is indeed the power steering at to go back to my dealership as this is on recall ) this is a driving hazard and i am thoroughly disappointed in this car, the amount of maintenance it has required. i have put more work into this 2008 chev cobalt in the past three years than my ten year old 10 year old mazda ever had. i will never again buy a chevy as this is the second vehicale i have owned that has required a lot of maintenance and, the quality is very poor. i have had to replace the alternator, sway bar (twice ), brakes, shockes, tires, bushel's and my fussess are constantly blowing in my car and now continue to have a problem and a very serious steering and saftey issue.

2008 chevy cobalt, i bought it brand new in jan. 2008! i have had nothing but problems with the passengers side front end and front brakes. in the beginning, the car was under warranty, now it is not, but the problems keep happening and i have had it back in for service many, many times! always for the same issues, front end and brakes! you will see when you pull the service reports! i contacted gm and i had a wonderful lady working with me and she said she was putting someone on my acct, a guy called me said they accepted my acct, now today he called and said they were not able to do the buy back program with the car and just to keep servicing the car! im telling you they service it and then in a matter of a short period, its back in the service dept. the car should in no way shape or form, have all these issues and for gods sake front end or brakes, its still fairly new! i pray nothing seriously happens to me or anyone riding in this car due to something being broke or breaking! the service dept where i bought the car says they fix it, but shortly there after its back! now, they treat me like i dont know what im talking about and i am furious! please check out the service reports and you tell me! i believe this is a defective car! there also has been others who have had issues with the front ends and brakes with these cars even the owner of the dealer i bought it at admitted that! there are several bulletins out on it also, i know for a fact! i am one very dissatisfied customer!!! right as i speak, when you are driving 40+ mph the steering wheel shakes and you can feel it in your seat and on the floor board..is this normal? it also wants to sway to the left or the right...ya just never know! the breaks have this horrible grinding loud sound as you brake, it is sometimes, not always! i will put down the first incident date because too many to list! there were other issues with this car as you will see in reports!

My son was driving my 2008 chevy cobalt, trying to make a turn into a parking lot when he got the chiming noise and at that point was without power steering. traveling @15-20 miles per hour and a 6ft man at 200lbs had everything he could do to navigate the vehicle off the road. two days after the incident when my son could not move and was in immeasurable pain he was brought to the er and diagnosed with a cervical spinal sprain. the vehicle was taken to jeff wyler chevy in springfield ohio after the crash. in response to my request for service on the vehicle known to be part of a recall for this exact situation i was told that the they determined the code for loss of power steering was never triggered. i explained of the chiming described by my son and was told by there service manager tj that there was nothing they could do until directed by gm. i have spent four days trying to get gm to handle this issue, i was actually told i could put it through my personal insurance and request reimbursement? seriously? at this point my son is hurt and out of work, we have no vehicle and no rental which i have requested since this began. i was actually told by their customer service rep on the phone that she did not see a recall on my vehicle. i advised her i had received via mail the notification and would not accept that as an answer. how can gm continue to have this vehicle on the road does someone have to die before they are accountable. i have been working on this issue for four days and i am no closer to getting an answer from gm than i was the day i started. can anyone help with this??

December 21,2008 changed my life forever. driver was killed in a one car crash, where her and her car were thru to the street below on 6-35 and high dr. the car went airborne she was thrown out the car but was saved enough to be transported to the hospital where she later died. the car was not so lucky it landed and rolled to a stop at the bottom of the bridge, in which the car was scatter in many pieces. there was phyiscal not much left of the car. the car would have been going the speed limit it would have by passed the opening and landed on the other side but because it was slow going it resulted in her death. there was a reenactment done but the finding were in conclusive on how she died. she lost control after getting on the highway. i checked for recall on her 2008 cobalt and there were none at the time of her death. her older sister want to know if this could have been a result of the power steering problem. i started looking for recall right after her death and did not find any and did not know what to do but now this national recalls for the toyota then the voluntary recall done with gm recently opened our eyes that this young woman death could be the result of faulty car. please let me know what is need to be done to file this complaint. we have suffered a great loss. she was a good drive and the conclusion that has been made has been none. we just dont know what happened. *tr

On approximately 2/1/10, my power steering light came on after slowing to turn a corner. since i was about 1 block from home, i drove home without power steering, turned the car off and checked my owner's manual where it suggested that i contact my dealer immediately. the following morning, i contacted the dealer and was told to bring the car in. as i turned on the engine, the power steering message was gone and the power steering had returned. i went ahead and took it to the dealer who told me to bring it back in if the message returned and power steering was lost again. i drove to work and as i turned into the parking lot, the message appeared again and power steering was lost. when the engine was turned off and restarted, the message was gone and power steering returned. i drove until 2/2/10 at which time i was driving down the expressway when the message came on again and power steering was lost. i drove directly to the dealer while the message was on. the car was checked and i was told the power steering assist motor was going out and would have to be replaced. on 2/3/10, i brought the car into the dealer for repair and paid $398.58 for repairs.  On march 7 2009, i was involved in an automobile accident while driving a 2008 chevy cobalt lt, the vehicle was a rental from enterprise rent a car. i was unable to control the vehicle and the steering behaved very erratically. the cause of the accident was categorized as a dui (.089 bac) but i firmly believe that it was due to the steering, i did mention this in the initial police report but, but my dui took precedence over everything else. i was hospitalized with significant injuries and costs. kindly advice as to how i can seek some relief from the consequences both financial, physical, mental and legal. i will consult an attorney in this matter as well, but would like to lodge a formal complaint about the incident. *tr

Prior to this incident, i had noticed that the steering was really stiff and hard to steer. i had originally thought that this was just the design of the car. this is a rental car so i only had it temporarily. on february 17, 2010, i pulled up to gas station driving this car: 2008 chevy cobalt ls. the steering froze up and the car wouldn't re-start. if this would have happened while i was driving, it could have resulted in serious injury or death. the manager at hertz will not speak to me and has not returned my phone calls. i am reporting hertz to the better business bureau and to my legislatures. again, this car is a 2008 chevy cobalt ls and i have been researching this automobile. i have found that this car has a known issue and numerous customers want it recalled. at this time, i believe they are still having to pay for the repairs. *tr

Had a knocking sound coming from under hood. lasted about two months. took vehicle in before warranty expired and they said i had a faulty steering column. they tried to say it was possibly caused by my worn tires but they still have at least two months left before i would have to replace them. because part was covered under warranty they replaced the steering column (pt#19209155) and i paid the $100 deductible. i had other problems with steering on the freeway but figured it was the road conditions. non lead to a accident but at least one time i almost hit another car. hopefully there will be a recall on this because this could lead to a very fatal accident. i will never use this vehicle to transport any of my children. *tr

2008 chevrolet cobalt. electronic steering will disengage while driving. this problem has happened numerous times and causing the driver to nearly lose control of the vehicle. the problem will arise if the automobile is on the road at a high rate of speed or moving slowly. dealerships project the cost at $900 to $1500 to repair. we feel this is the manufactures fault due to an ineffective electronic power steering. it is also a great safety hazard that could result in someone causing a fatality or getting hurt themselves. *tr

I was pulling into a driveway and the power steering completely went out and the power steering light came on. i immediately went to the dealership(mk smith, chino, ca) they turned off the car and the light went out and then the steering was fine. i left the car there for them to check out because if that would have happened while i was making a turn i would have had an accident. i know there has been over a thousand complaints with the same problem and even some accidents so i don't want to take the chance of driving the car. there needs to be a recall on this problem. until there is i have to endure the cost of the repairs. i have a 2008 chevy cobalt. *tr

I bought a 2008 chevy cobalt lt in april of 2009. at the time, it had 28,000 miles on it. as the car neared 40,000 miles it would occasionally lose its power steering capability, but restarting the car would bring back the power steering. as time went on, the problem became more and more frequent until about a month ago when the power steering went completely out. i called my dealer (1/26/10) to report the problem and they claimed to know nothing about it and offered no advice. i then took my car to my personal mechanic who discovered that gm had previously issued 2 service bulletins related to the problem. my mechanic called a different chevy dealer and found out that the repair (parts only) would run about $1200. i do not have that kind of money, and more importantly, i am concerned about the risk of hitting another car because of the inability to make proper turns, especially in parking situations. i am also quite sure that if i had to quickly swerve to avoid an obstacle, that would be nearly impossible. as well, i am experiencing increased shoulder pain from driving the car without any power steering. part of my job involves transporting young adults, which i am not comfortable doing because of the safety liability. at this point, i am losing income, and endangering my health as well as the safety of passengers. *tr

My daughter was driving my 2008 chevy cobalt on rte. 219 between ridgewayand bradford, pa on sept. 11, 2009, when she lost control of the steering. it was around noon and lightly sprinkling. she was traveling north at about 50 miles per hour. there was a truck in front of her which she considered passing. she turned to the left to see if she could pass. she decided not to pass and turned right. that is when she lost steering control. the steering took her too far right and into the guardrail, then she bounce off the rail and over to the left side of the road where she hit the opposite guardrail. the road was flat and straight, not the side of a mountain. the car then took her back to the right side of the road where she stopped. the car suffered about $6000 damage. had there been a car on the opposite side of the road, she would have been struck head on. we assumed because the road was somewhat wet, she must have hydroplaned. we were just relieved she wasn't killed or injured. when i read the article in the paper about the steering, i asked my daughter to describe where happened in the accident. she spoke of losing control of the steering, so now i fear the steering may be faulty and her life my be in danger. *tr

While teaching my 16 year old how to angle park jan 30, the steering locked. we were doing a lot of hard turns and had to stop practicing. because we were in a large parking lot, we switched drivers and i tested the steering. it seemed to be ok but did tug several times. we went to jiffy lube one block away and they said to take it to our dealer. my husband then test drove it around the block and it seemed fine. since the parking lesson i've noticed that the steering tugs and then seems fine when making hard turns, while parking, and while leaving a parking space. we have an appointment with our dealer tomorrow, dropping the car off tonight. my husband and i are sharing the van in the meantime. *tr

I have a 2008 chevy cobalt with a random message light power steering. when the message light comes on, the power steering goes out. the message light goes off when the car is turned off and will randomly appear again, either going at a slow speed, such as turning a corner or just going down the expressway at 65 mph. i have taken it to the dealer who tells me the power steering motor is going out and is expected to cost about $500.00. the car was put into the shop today and they have told me now that they want to check everything out and will call me when they find the exact problem. i have today become aware that an investigation has been started by the nhtsa because of approximately 1132 complaints about the cobalt's failing power steering systems. i was told by the dealer that they do not see this problem very often. however, if there have been this many reported incidents there is no telling how many have gone unreported. *tr

The power steering failure in the '08 chevy cobalt seems to occur at random. with only 6k miles on the vehicle it was taken back to the dealer to be fixed. now at 10k miles the same problem is occurring. the power steering will stop working and the light in the dash will flash at random. the longer it goes without repair the worse it gets. eventually it will go out every 5 minutes or less. only way to fix it is to shut the car off and turn it back on. *tr
