I was just driving along when suddenly a chime sounded and power steering appeared on my dash instruments. i had no power steering. i was able to pull over to the side of the road and turn off the car. when it was restarted, the power steering was reset. this problem occurred once on 6/27/12 and then three times on 6/28/12 (once on the interstate at 70 mph). according to websites, this power steering loss is a problem with chevy cobalts and there was a recall in 2010. however, my cobalt vin is not included in the recall for some unknown reason. it should be because, apparently, this is a problem in unrecalled cobalts and could result in a serious accident. when power steering is lost the car becomes very hard to steer and there's not always a place to pull off the road so you turn off the car and restart it. plus, there's no warning. the power steering is lost totally at random at any speed.

My daughter was traveling on a straight road when the steering became difficult. the vehicle went from side to side moving from the right of the road to the left of the road while fighting the wheel. she was unable to control the car and her arms gave out and she could not fight it anymore and then the car flipped and ended up on its side after hitting a fence and fence post. the rear airbags did not deploy. this car is very dangerous and people need to come forward with this information. something has to be done before more people loose their lives. i could have lost my daughter because of a defect for which i have never rec'd a notice.

After running multiple errands around town, i pulled back into my work parking lot and as i was slowing down to stop, i heard a faint 'ding' noise and looked down adn my display said power steering and then my steering wheel locked up! i was gald to be slowing to stop as the wheel would not turn. i turned off my engine and went inside work. after 10 minutes i came back outside to look at the manual to see where the power steering fluid container was inside the hood and start the car again. the power steering problem was gone. and i popped the hood and did not see a fluid container for the ps. i called the dealer as my car is 2 years old but i had just purchased it 2 months ago and had only put on less than 1,500 miles. i scheduled an appointment for me today (one day after the incident). the tech who checked me in, told me that there is no ps fluid container to fill, as it is all motor/electronic driven. he said they would look it over and let me know. i did purchase an extended warranty on this vehicle and the vehicle came with a 2 year certified used warranty as well. the mechanic said it was the power steering assist motor and that they would be replacing it at no charge as i had the warranty. the paperwork states they put a rebuilt ps assist motor into my 2010 cobalt. now after being online and reading multiple years of reviews regarding 2005, 2006 & 2007 cobalt's, i am wondering where does it end? how many more years worth of cars are having these problems? why has a recall not been done on any of these years cars? i drive my car on long family trips as well as many work trips, which is why i got it in the first place to combat the higher gas prices and get better fuel efficiency. but getting into a crash while i am on the road, if this problem occurs again, negates all of that. please do something!

I was driving and the check power steering light came on and i was barely able to steer the car. i took it to a chevy dealership in dickson tn and they told me that yes there is a recall for this problem however my vehicle is not included. i have also contacted the gm hotline but was told the same thing. the vehicle is not under warrant now for that problem and i just purchased it about 2 months ago. can't let my teenage daughter drive due to fear that failure will result in an accident and that my insurance company would disallow any claim on this vehicle for an accident due to a recall and steering failure. i don't have any choice but to drive this car as it is my primary source of transportation and can't afford to get it fixed. in closing i want to know why if i am having the same problem that others experienced with steering and resulted in a recall for their vehicles why is my car not included? same problem as them, same part but because it was built after the recall i am stuck - help

I bought this car fairly new. at first there were no problems with it. but after a couple thousand miles i started to hear a rattle noise. i have since taken it to the shop 6 + times. they keep sending me around with their bull crap sayhing its this, its that, when in fact its most likely the steering recall/problem. when they replaced the steering column it stopped, but only to come back after a couple more thousand miles.

Was driving as usual when all of a sudden the wheels started grabbing to the left, i pulled on steering wheel & then i noticed power steering light was on. by then the car had crossed one lane i slammed brakes on because i could not control the steering, & car came to rest in turning lane at which time i called on star, & local sheriffs office. when police arrived to help get car out of middle of road, a very large cop i might say, he was astounded at the difficulty he had at turning wheel so we could move car out of road. when cop #2 came up he was the one that told me that they had problems before with these cars. i googled it, then i pulled the power steering fuse out & luckily it reset computer so i could drive it to dealership to get it fixed. now is next one they install going to be any safer? not from what i have read. owe way too much on car to trade in now or i will be in the hole. so i am driving scared in a 1 year old car.

I have a new 2010 cobalt and i now find that there is a problem with the steering , my cobalt is not part of the power steering assist recall . i started noticing the problem while turning , i seem to loose power steering from time to time and i don't get a warning light . this happens at low speeds as well as at high speeds and when it does happen turning right or left is harder and the steering wheel seems stiff like i say seems like i loose power steering . i had it into the dealer to confirm that it was not part of the recall and they say there mechanics where unable to reproduce the issue so they say there is no problem and they checked the power steering assist and they did not see a problem with it . the tight steering happens on and off and does not seem to follow any pattern . i started noticing this problem at about 15k km . there was a noise in the front end and the gm mechanics says there was a problem with something in the steering column however it did fix the noise but the loss or what seems to be a loss of power steering control still there .

On the morning of february 20th, i was driving back to my boyfriends house from work. i got off around 7:30 am so it was around 8 am when i reached the exit for his house. i slowed the car to take the exit ramp to 40 mph with my foot still on the brake. the car then veered hard to the right and i tried to straighten out the wheel as i let off the brakes. instead the car veered to the left and i started to hydroplane. i lost complete control of the car and began to spin. my steering wheel then locked up. as i was spinning, the right side of my car struck a light reflector pole and shattered my back passenger window in the pain and dented the car and removed paint. it also messed up my back alignment. for the first few minutes my car would not even start back up and the brakes were locked in place. i then had the car towed to my home dealership to be inspected. after inspecting the car, they said that no codes for power steering had popped up, yet they did not actually drive the car to see how it drove. therefore, i had to pay out of pocket at a different dealership to have my car fixed.

Driving at a slow speed 15-20 mph, was unable to turn the wheel, seems like it locked up. i could not pull the car away from veering into a concrete planter used to keep the traffic pattern in the parking lot. vehicle sustained damage in the the wheel, steering, radiator and body of the car. when the car was towed over to the dealer we were told that they were checking the vin for the recall that was issued for many of these cars. after checking we found that there was a recall on this model up to march of 2010, ours we are told was built in april of 2010. obviously, there were problems with the 2010 cobalt since this was the last year they had production on this vehicle, we were not aware they had stopped the production of this model at the time we purchased this vehicle. we believe there was a manufacturing problem with this vehicle which may have lead to the steering issues we had on january 13. 2011.

I purchased the vehicle in february 2010 and i didn't start noticing problems till around summer but they were not that bad till september were the car started showing strange electrical and steering issue. i received the recall letter in october and had the power steering issue fixed but its still have issues were the vehicle will swerve back and forth in return i will have to keep my hands on the steering wheel to try to keep it from hitting other vehicles on the highway. then the blower motor that blows the hot and cold air sometimes istatically revs up high and i have to turn of the heater. also i have noticed that the breaks squeal and i only have 10300 miles. i have also noticed that the needles on the gauges in the dash tend to twitch radically when i turn the vehicle off sometimes. then at times the car when turned on will start to act as if it was to shut off and the lights would all dim and then it would stabilize. it has done that on the highway making steering difficult at times. the engine as well had made knocking noises to its been an off and on thing.

The power steering completely locked up sending the vehicle and passengers into a ditch, airborne and back down into the ditch. ever since that incident, the steering wheel freely turns 360 degrees several times - with the key out of the ignition!!! when it is supposed to turn it doesn't and when it isn't supposed to turn, it does. the plastic key guard around the ignition switch fell off! and this is after earlier complaints about defective rims, the starter 9or electricl relay to the starter) failing after one weeks ownership, the power steering locking up and now little by little the pieces are falling off the car!!! and gm says - the computer doesn't show anything happened - or - it is not a warranty item - it is impact damage! i bought the 2010 chevy cobalt new on march 29, 2010 with 10 whole miles on it. i have also filed a complaint with the attorney general from some sort of intervention.

I bought a brand new 2010 cobalt lt that was built after the march 2010 recall for electric steering. so it came with the newly authorized electric steering unit. the steering didn't go out as many have experienced, but had an annoying pull to the left. the dealership mechanic followed procedure and reset the centering with his scan tool, but it made no difference. the service manual said to replace the steering column. the steering column was replaced and that did resolve the pulling to the left. however, when i reach 50ish mph and the computer puts the steering into stiff mode there is no play left in the steering and it takes a lot of effort for input. it requires full attention to keep the car in the lane at expressway speeds, and worse still in windy conditions. in short, at expressway speeds, the steering is too stiff requiring much effort, and there is no play in the steering so the car continually wants to go left or right, and not track straight down the highway, as it should. i find this annoying and tiresome, as i have arthritis and it requires needless effort, and even the junkiest old wreck should track down the highway and stay in the lane without much input. i've contacted every department at gm to find out if the steering can be set to always be in full-power assist mode and no one can answer the question, not even the handicap/special needs department. gm won't put me through to the engineering department who could actually answer the question, and would know how to go about it.

On 3/5/10 at about 4pm i was traveling east bound on route 280 near newark exit. i was in the fast lane of a 3 lane highway. the middle lane was empty so i pulled into middle lane. a red pick up truck in the far right lane (slow lane) pulled into the middle lane. i assume i may have been in his blind spot. i had to pull back into the left lane. car locked up & i could not stop it from going left. i hit the cement barrier along shoulder. the witnesses all told me they could not understand why my car did not stop. itjust seemed to keep going left for no reason. i've heard through the news that chevy is issuing recalls for failed power steering in cobalt 2010. i've had this car 6 weeks and now its totaled. i could not pull it out of going left & it seems since it was 50 degrees that this was a steering failure. i was treated at the scene for abrasions & swelling to the face & arm. my neck & back are sore. i got a black eye from air bag. nj state trooper wrote a report. *tr
