AIR BAGS

I own a 2006 chevy colorado extended cab. the wiring harness that controls the air bags, interior lights, and stereo speakers keeps breaking. i was told that it was a defect from the factory. the wires run between the cab and rear doors. i had it fixed under warranty in 2008 and again in 2009. my warranty expired right after the second fix. i have had to fix it myself twice since then. this is a safety issue since the air bags are inoperable when the wires break. i am sure there are several hundred of these trucks on the road with defective air bags since most people will not fix it. i would expect chevrolet to extend the warranty to 100,000 miles for this problem. i would also expect gm to correct the issue so it doesn't happen again.

Defective design of air bag sensor system. this system deactivates the frontal passenger airbag for passengers of less than a fixed weight, for the protection of small children. however, there is no manual override, and the system deactivates for teens and adults also, of at least 90 lbs. weight. thus, there is no airbag protection for my wife, who weighs 90 lbs. her weight will not activate the airbag system, and there is no manual way to turn it on. this is a serious injury waiting to happen, for any small woman or adolescent or older child who wishes to use the front passenger seat: they have an airbag but it will not operate for them. i was told by the dealership that this new truck comes this way, and cannot be fixed. a call to chevrolet resulted in the same response. the unit is up to design code - hence, there is no problem. there certainly is a problem. *nm
