Defect SummaryGeneral motors (gm) is recalling certain model year 2011 and 2012 chevrolet cruze vehicles manufactured from october 2, 2009, through may 31, 2012. spilled or dripping oil (such as after an oil change) may collect in the engine shield (bellypan) near hot engine or exhaust system surfaces. as a result, the oil and the engine shield may ignite and burn.
Consequence SummaryEither condition could result in an engine compartment fire, possibly causing injury or death.
Corrective SummaryGm will notify owners, and dealers will modify the engine shield to prevent fluid from contacting the shield. also, on vehicles with a manual transmission, dealers will apply a protective tape to the electronic power steering wire harness. repairs will be performed free of charge to the owner. the safety recall began on july 10, 2012. owners may contact the chevrolet owner center at 1-866-694-6546.

 In a june 21, 2012 letter to nhtsa, general motors llc. (gm) submitted a defect information report (dir) identifying a defect in approximately 413,148 model year (my) 2011 through 2012 chevrolet cruze vehicles manufactured from october 2, 2009 through may 31, 2012 (recall 12v-288). according to gm, engine oil change procedures can result in spilling or dripping of oil on the engine shield.also, manual transmission vehicles with a completely worn clutch may cause hydraulic fluid to be expelled from the clutch housing vent hole.if oil, debris or the burning hydraulic fluid contacts hot engine or exhaust system surfaces, and the engine shield, the shield may ignite and burn, leading to a possible engine compartment or vehicle fire.gm and its engine shield supplier, hanwha, modified the engine shield to address factors that may contribute to engine compartment fire. the redesigned shields were completely implemented in production vehicles by june 2012.the office of defects investigation (odi) analyzed complaint data provided by gm as well as complaints submitted to odi from consumers. in total, there were 25 unique chevrolet cruze reports indicating hot surface ignition due to engine oil or hydraulic fluid contacting hot manifold, exhaust surfaces and the engine shield.four additional fires were identified that resulted from other or unknown causes, including 1 attributed to a missing oil filler cap.three fires of unknown cause all involved vehicles equipped with 1.4l l4 turbocharged engines.odi will continue to monitor field experience in cruze vehicles equipped with that engine.owners of the recalled vehicles are notified to take their vehicle to a gm dealer, who will modify the engine shield to prevent oil fluids from contacting the shield.also, on vehicles with a manual transmission, dealers are to apply a protective tape to the electronic power steering wire harness to prevent any incidents related to this issue. this preliminary evaluation is closed.the odi reports cited above can be viewed at www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/complaints under the following identification numbers (odi nos.): 10456338, 10453754, 10450556, 10446718.

 Tl- the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number 12v288000 (engine and engine cooling). after the repairs were completed, the contact noticed that the power steering harness had been chewed and felt that the engine was no longer protected since the engine cover was removed. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the power steering harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired. the manufacturer was contacted about the failure. the failure mileage was approximately 2,535. the current mileage was approximately 6,000. mah

 Tl-the contact owns a 2012 chevrolet cruze. the contact stated he received a recall in regards to nhtsa campaign id number 12v288000 (engine and engine cooling). after having the repairs done he was not satisfied due to the engine shield being removed. he felt as though the there was no more protection for the engine since the shield was removed. in addition, after having the shield removed he noticed that the power steering harness was chewed on by rats. the vehicle was taken to the dealer. after diagnosis they advised him that the power steering harness needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the power steering harness. the manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. the failure mileage was approximately 2,535. the current mileage was approximately 6,000. tb

 I purchased a 2012 chevy cruze 2lt w/rs package on 9/19/12. i didn't notice right away but after i drove for a few days i notice the engine would have this loud vibration when i barely accelerate, like staying at a steady speed. if i accelerate from a stopped position it doesn't do it or i just don't hear it because i hear the turbo. after driving it a few weeks the vibration sound has gotten worse, so i took it to the dealership to be checked. they test drove it and told me this is the way the echotech w/turbo motors sound and nothing was wrong with it. i wasn't satisfied so i asked i could test drive another car just like mine on their lot. they graciously let me and it sounded the same. my sons girlfriend has the exact same car and hers sounds nothing like mine. she bought hers at a different dealership which means it was probably came from a different manufacturer. something isn't right and this should be fixed. this does not sound like a new car. it's very embarrassing. my 1995 chevy cavalier is not as loud as my new car. another thing is when i slow down to pull in my driveway (on a hill) i just let off the gas and the car will jerk really hard. this doesn't happen all the time but this will be an issue i'm sure when the warranty is up. i'm very disappointed with my first new car purchase. i waited 42 years for this. *tr

 Chevrolet's recall fix on the 2011-2012 chevy cruze involve cutting off large portions of the underneath heat shield, this piece is also a debris shield. but now with the heat shield completely gone, there now is no protection from debris entering under the hood and causing more damage, also with this fix gm is compromising the biggest selling point of this car which is the gas mileage, this shield is also used to reduce drag underneath the car and in turn increasing gas mileage, but now drag will increase underhood which will decrease fuel mileage. in very wet climates this shield helped prevent water from spraying up under the hood as well, and by removing this shield our cars are now more prone rust, corrosion and abnormal wear to vital parts. gm has done a horrible job at fixing this problem, no logic or obvious care were taken into consideration when addressing this issue. if this kind of similar problem happened on a cadillac or a corvette would have they fixed the problem the same way?? probably not, so what makes my chevy cruze any less important? *tr

 2012 chevrolet cruze lt1 rs package, automatic transmission on june 27 i was in murray, ky driving home from murray state university. i was in heavy traffic. after the light changed i gave the accelerator a light tap to move the car forward. it started slowly but after a few seconds, it seems that the car stalled. the transmission downshifted and when i gave the accelerator a tap, nothing. at this time, i was certain i would be in an accident. again, i gave the accelerator a tap (mind you, i didn't mash the petal to the floor board, i gave it enough of a tap to switch the gear). the car did nothing, and again my concern was that i would be rear ended soon. another tip (again, i did not mash the pedal to the floor), and finally the turbo charger kicked in and the car switched gears. but when the car shifted gears, it was an explosion of force that jerked and lurched the car forward including my self. i was glad to get moving since traffic was heavy. since this incident, it has happened 5 times that the car has been sluggish to respond, and it have continued to shift gears with random jerks and often explosive force that jerks both car and passenger. i have had this to 2 dealerships, and they say they cannot reproduce it, and they both tell me that this is a normal thing, and that this transmission will make erratic gear changes. i am concerned for my safety with i drive this car, and hope i am not stranded in traffic when the transmission fails to shift properly. *tr

 Have coolant odor inside vehicle. dealer tested 3 times, but claims they can't duplicate the problem. smell is very bad in colder months. window fogs. have to drive with windows open somewhat in winter conditions. chevy now has a bulletin. been trying to work through gm regional - they are ignoring me. many other cruze owners have same complaint/problem.

 I was driving home and out of nowhere my 2012 chevy cruze dings and says engine overheating a/c turned off, i was very surprised but kept driving and literally one minute later the car dings again. there is a different message that says idle engine overheating, at this point i am very worried and i pull over and call the chevy dealership that i bought the car from and explain what has occurred. i was advised to bring the car into the service department. so, i start the car up and begin the drive over to the dealership that is about 15 minutes away because of traffic. not three minutes into the drive i get the same message idle engine overheating, i'm very nervous but keep going and about two minutes later i get a new message shut engine off engine overheating. i call the dealership and they tell me that i am close enough that i should just continue and drive to the dealership. i get about 200 yards from the entrance of the dealership and my engine starts smoking. i have had this car for less than seven months and i basically only use it to drive to work and school. i take very good care of my vehicles, i get the oil changed every 4,000-5,000 miles, in fact i got an oil change less than a week ago.

 2012 chevy cruze. consumer writes in regards to a distinctive burning odor coming from under the vehicle. *smd the consumer stated the vehicle was taken to the dealer five times for the burning odor. from the first day of purchase, the consumer noticed a burning smell coming from outside of the vehicle. the smell became progressively stronger and stronger. the further the vehicle was driven, the stronger the burning odor became. the consumer has since traded the vehicle, for a different year.

 After having the underbelly shield modified on my sister's 2012 chevrolet cruze eco per the recall (nhtsa campaign number 12v288000) i noticed an increase in buffeting and highway speed wandering in the handling of her car.this is most noticeable at speeds of approx 75 mph and higher. the car felt less stable than it did prior to the recall service being performed on the vehicle. because of this, i purchased a replacement underbody shield from a dealer and re-installed it. the result of this re-installation was noise back to normal, handling back to normal. *tr

 2012 chevrolet cruze. consumer writes in regards to engine shield modification *tgw the consumer stated after the recall was performed, all the lights on the dashboard illuminated , power was reduced and the word engine power reduced appeared illuminated as well. the consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer. after checking all the wiring near the locations of the cuts of the shield, the dealer tested other possibilities and informed the consumer, that cause was a bad potentiometer on the gas throttle.

 Purchased 4/25/2012. after driving a little, noticed lack of power, easily stalls, something rolling around in the trunk lid, console piece gaped out, passenger side tail lamp inside trunk bent, engine shutters (after 500 miles it started) when turned on and off. the lack of power and engine stalling are the major safety concerns. when in a stopped position, the car will stall when the clutch is operated correctly. while making a right hand turn from a stop sign, onto route 30, at a blind intersection, the car would not move, once i let the clutch out and was in 1st gear, the car just did not move, i had the gas pushed to the floor and i was only moving inches forward. i was scared, i had my child in the car with me, a tractor trailer could have come up on me 50+ mph hit me or swerved to miss me and hit someone else. the car finally moved after about 45 sec. i then got up to speed in 6th gear. the car then again lost power, i had to down shift from 6th gear to 4th gear to get speed built back up. i got home, about 2 miles, was upset and scared, called apple chevrolet, the car sat until i drove it to the dealership 35 mins from my home the next morning. i told them that it does not happen every day so the chances of it happening again are slim. this would be the 3rd visit to the service dept for the lack of power complaint. i drove with the tech anyway knowing that it was not going to be duplicated. i told the service rep that i wanted a turbo boost gauge put on it because it does not seem to be boosting all the time. when i was called that my car was done and nothing was duplicated, i was told that it was boosting in range. when i picked my car up the next day, there was nothing on my bill that stated that the turbo was even checked. i was told that they cannot put every piece of equipment that they use on each car on every bill. etc...

 2012 chevrolet cruze. consumer writes in regards safety recall *tgw the consumer stated his wife saw a news report, where 30 vehicles had problems with oil in the bellypan. there was sufficient danger to initiate a recall. when the consumer went to have the oil change at the dealer, he brought up the recall. however, the dealer claimed to know nothing about it . the dealer then checked online and received a diagram as to how to fix the problem. the oil changed revealed and excessive amount of oil in the bellypan. the consumer also stated it was difficult to change a flat tire, due to the poorly designed jack.

 Purchased 4/25/2012. after driving a little, noticed lack of power, easily stalls, something rolling around in the trunk lid, console piece gaped out, passenger side tail lamp inside trunk bent, engine shutters (after 500 miles it started) when turned on and off. the lack of power and engine stalling are the major safety concerns. when in a stopped position, the car will stall when the clutch is operated correctly. while making a right hand turn from a stop sign, onto route 30, at a blind intersection, the car would not move, once i let the clutch out and was in 1st gear, the car just did not move, i had the gas pushed to the floor and i was only moving inches forward. i was scared, i had my child in the car with me, a tractor trailer could have come up on me 50+ mph hit me or swerved to miss me and hit someone else. the car finally moved after about 45 sec. i then got up to speed in 6th gear. the car then again lost power, i had to down shift from 6th gear to 4th gear to get speed built back up. i got home, about 2 miles, was upset and scared, called apple chevrolet, the car sat until i drove it to the dealership 35 mins from my home the next morning. i told them that it does not happen every day so the chances of it happening again are slim. this would be the 3rd visit to the service dept for the lack of power complaint. i drove with the tech anyway knowing that it was not going to be duplicated. i told the service rep that i wanted a turbo boost gauge put on it because it does not seem to be boosting all the time. when i was called that my car was done and nothing was duplicated, i was told that it was boosting in range. when i picked my car up the next day, there was nothing on my bill that stated that the turbo was even checked. i was told that they cannot put every piece of equipment that they use on each car on every bill. etc...

 2012 chevrolet cruze. consumer writes in regards safety recall *tgw the consumer stated his wife saw a news report, where 30 vehicles had problems with oil in the bellypan. there was sufficient danger to initiate a recall. when the consumer went to have the oil change at the dealer, he brought up the recall. however, the dealer claimed to know nothing about it . the dealer then checked online and received a diagram as to how to fix the problem. the oil changed revealed and excessive amount of oil in the bellypan. the consumer also stated it was difficult to change a flat tire, due to the poorly designed jack.
