I heard a rattling coming from under the car, so i took it my repair shop. he said it was a broken carrier bearing, and ordered the part. said it would be $550 for parts and labor. the next day he called and said he wouldn't be able to replace just the one part, but that the entire drive shaft might have to be replaced, for around $1200. very consistent with other owners' issue.

Infrequently, without warning, this vehicle's transmission will abruptly down shift. the shift will happen as the vehicle slows and violently slows the vehicle immediately. infrequently this happens as i slow to turn to enter the on ramp for interstate driving. in the most recent case, the roadway surface was very slippery. i was just beginning a right turn and the transmission shifted violently. the rear of the vehicle began to swing to the right as the front tires immediately dropped their speed. this vehicle is not equipped with stability, traction control or anytime of anti skid accessories/options. the slippery road surface greatly magnified the effect of the unexpected downshift and resulting immediate drop in speed. until this event, the down shifting was so infrequent, i was only remotely concerned about it. my concern up until this event was more focused mechanical and not control ability. i quickly made an appointment with the gm dealer where the car was purchased. they assessed the problem and called me to advise, there is a transmission software update which gm recommends for this transmission. it is not certain it will fix the problem, but most likely it will. i was charged $180. to diagnose and reprogram. when i picked up the car i expressed my concern. gm apparently knows there is a program error which needs an update, and i am suppose to pay to fix the known problem? yet there is no safety bulletin for this known problem? i strongly pointed out this is known problem is a safety issue which can become a serious accident under the right surface conditions. the service adviser agreed with me, however stated to the effect, this software update is the repair gm authorizes. i feel this software update needs to be mandatory for older vehicles operated in slippery roadway conditions, even a service bulletin would help warn unsuspecting drivers. *tr

The carrier bearing is faulty on 2005 equinoxes. our mechanic told us this is a huge problem because it could cause the car to flip over. the major issue is that to repair the carrier bearing, they have to remove and replace the drive shaft. this has to be sent to chevrolet, and since it can only be done by them, they have a strong arm on the price. ($1200) it is evident that this is a manufacturing defect because when i began to google 'drive shaft chevy', it gave me 2005 equinox as a suggestion. the year was specific in the problem.

The center barring on the drive shaft wore out back in april 2011 at 83,000 miles. it was replaced by a gmc dealership. the same component wore out again and required replacing in september 2011.

The drive shaft failed which greatly reduced power to the wheels. the car became less unresponsive on the road (replacement not covered by dealer warranty) and could not move through minimum snow amounts going up hills on roadways. vehicle is used for commuting to work (35 miles/day) on paved roads.

2005 equinox bought used in 2007at 35000 miles-i was confused why someone would trade such a new car in-brakes continue to ewar down-ignition had to be replaced, car would just die going down the highway-car almost feels like brakes are being applied when i take my foot off of the gass-tires that i bought 1 year ago are wearing out-
04/05/201087000
My equinox was taken to dealer who informed me that the drive shaft was being held in place by one rusty piece of metal. he told me that if i were to hit a bump it would dislodge and would cause a serious accident and harm to car. not good news for a mother. he is replacing this part.

The failure is that my 2005 chevy equinox. the on-demand all wheel drive doesn't engage. it makes a grinding noise. this has happened since i've had the vehicle. i bought it new in may 2005. i moved to montana that year and when the vehicle slips the all-wheel drive is supposed to automatically engage. it doesn't and it makes a funny noise. i've taken my vehicle in many times while it was still under warranty and no dealership could recreate the slipping due to the lack of snow or ice or water on the road. the dealerships hooked my vehicle up to a computer and no codes would ever come back as being a problem. my vehicle still makes this noise when the all-wheel drive tries to engage. i never knew there was a way to report this issue if a service department can't recreate the issue. i found this website on headline news w/ robin mead. great reporting!! *tr

2005 equinox with normal driving, mostly highway. began to hear the typical sounds of a failing bearing prior to 60,000 miles. vibration in steering, hum present when driving, uneven wear on front tires. replaced rfhub under warranty at approx. 69,000 miles. within 10,000 miles that rfhub began to fail, by the time i could get it to the dealership i had surpassed my warranty and the 12 months/12,000 warranty on the installed part via the dealership. was told that it wasn't out of the ordinary for the part to fail so quickly, which is news to me! how can a bearing fail that quickly and not be defective. was forced to pay over 500.00 to replace it. have complained numerous times about a rattle when going over bumpy roads and received the we couldn't replicate it response since initial complaint prior to 60,000 miles. have heard that the tierods are to blame, have mentioned it, but still deal with this rattle that goes unaccounted. also have bad electrical that can't be replicated at the dealership. radio and panel in dash flash at random times as if a wire were loose or shorting, loud booming thuds come from the speakers at the same time. speaker blew in door, but after warranty. regardless of numerous complaints i would have to pay out of pocket because they couldn't replicate these things when taken in to get looked at. fuel gage sticks, but either have to pay 120.00 to possibly correct it with a fuel system cleaner, or pay 700.00 to replace fuel filter. such great options. my family has worked for general motors for years, it's a shame. *tr

Since 2008, i have experienced the following problems with brakes grinding & squeaking even after getting them repaired (front and rear brakes / rotors replaced). a couple of days after rear brakes replaced the abs & tc lights were on. i had to have sensors replaced. i have also experienced car not starting and sounding like it is flooding, after lettting car sit for a few minutes it then starts. there is also a popping noise that comes from the back of car after starting the engine. when changing shift from park to drive car occassionally jerks & shoots forward. when pressing the gas, the car takes a few moments then jerks forward. now i'm being told that the transmission is going bad & i have to pay $350 for a diagnostic test to determine if they can rebuild the transmission or have to replace it, which will cost between $1800 to $3000. there is a 2005 chevy equinox power train: automatic transaxle recall but my car is not covered. note: vehicle has been serviced regularly according to the maintainance schedule timetable provided by the manufacturer.

My 2005 chevrolet equinox needs a new drive shaft carrier bearing. the chevrolet dealership which is to perform the repair stated that this bearing is on national back order and could take between 3 weeks to 3 months for a replacement bearing. the dealership, the extended warranty company and gm will not authorize a loaner car. my understanding is that this bearing is used on many types of gm vehicles and there was a manufacturing defect which lead to the part shortage. my concern is that someone will not realize that damage to the drive shaft is occurring

I have a 2005 automatic transaxle equinox with less than 23000 miles this vehicle shifts in gear extremely hard which at times propels you forward. it also hits high rpm before it shifts into gear. one time it hit almost 6000 rpms while driving up hill before it kicked into gear. this same vehicle has also failed to shift into gear when trying to put it into reverse from park. i received a gm bulletin from my local dealer and told this is a problem gm is aware of but will not cover to be fitted due to the government is not requiring it. does someone has to be killed from this problem before something is done. *tr

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 awd chevy equinox, including the head gaskets blowing, losing acceleration on the 270/highway, ongoing acceleration problems, and other problems which still continue. i have begged for chevy to help get the car fully repaired and the customer service representatives just keep telling me to bring it into the dealer. i've tried two dealers and returned to the purchasing dealer who will only make repairs if they can pull a code - they report i am having problems with my spark plug wires - first they reattached it, and then replaced one but car still doesn't drive as it did before head gaskets blew. please, please help me - i've had my car in the shop 8 times in 4 months and the dealer and chevy will not provide me with an extended warranty - car warranty ends in 6 months or help repair properly. i am scared to drive this car and don't know what to do as they don't take my concerns seriously as the only way they diagnose is by pulling codes. *tr

On long highway trips with steep inclines, obds light and traction control light came on. when stopping, and trying to regain speed, car lost power to move forward. when engine turned off and back on, traction control light extinquised, obds light remained.when car cooled off, no light remained. first time did not bring to dealer. second time left car running. dealer said fixed problem. problem registered on computer as p0741. dealer did not mention of previous computer registration of first time incident. within 6 days, stranded on next long distance trip with steep incline, and was towed to next dealer. problem registers on computer with code p 0741, covered by bulletin 020730-013d. received three different explainations of problem. valve body was replaced. within one week same problem, when driving slow speed on country roads with steep inclines, however did not show on computer again. turned car off let it cool down and worked fine.

I have a 2005 chevrolet equinox. when towing my pop-up camper trailer, the 5 speed automatic tranmision will not shift from third gear to fourth gear automatically. upon reaching cruising speed, 60 or 65 mph, the engine remains at a high rpm until i release the accellerator pedal. then it shifts into fourth gear. i do not tow the trailer in fifth gear (overdrive). when i took the car to the dealer, a mechanic that has worked for this same chevrolet dealer for many years, drove the car, towing the trailer. when it did not shift, he told me straight out that there was a problem. when i left the car at the dealer (dick wickstrom chevrolet in roselle, illinois), they claim to have contacted the factory engineers and i was told that this is normal and that the transmission was designed that way. i very much disagree with that statement. i have towed trailers behind quite a few different vehicles and have never had this problem. i am tired of having dealers tell me that problems i experience are normal and that they all do that.

Complaint received via e-mail. the vehicle has been in for repairs 3 times, and i am waiting on a call from the dealer next week for updated information. the problems are: 1) foul odor, hoses for anti-freeze system replaced per bulletin; 2) rear squeaking, lubed same; 3) transmission. i originally thought brakes, but was told that the transmission had to be reprogrammed, and that it would continue to adjust itself according to driving conditions/ each driver's habits, and 4) popping noise heard when starting or when stopped with foot on brake. noise seems to be coming from gas tank area. asked for fuel line/exhaust system to be checked. as of this time repair center cannot duplicate this problem, and have no ideas. the car has been to the dealer 3 times and a total of 6 days. the transmission problem is in limbo as they are 'looking into it' and will call me back.*ak

Shaking in vehicle similar to that of an unbalanced tire. took to dealer for another issue just had them check to see what this new shaking was and they told me the center carrier bearing was shot and needed replaced. the service manager advised that this required the replacement of the entire drive shaft assembly at a cost of around $1200 plus labor. the safety issues here are enormous. if the drive shaft lets loose the vehicle could flip, roll, or any number of things. why has a recall not been done? i see many complaints about this exact issue. it is not common for a carrier bearing to fail especially so often and early. i have 77,000 miles on this 2005 equinox, way too soon for such issues. i am thoroughly disgusted with gm. i will never buy gm again.

At 60 mph my 2005 chevrolet equinox was rattling. we brought this to our mechanic and he informed us that the carrier bearing at the u-joint was afailing. i find this unacceptable in a vehicle that has only 56,000 miles on it. cost to repair was $550.00.

My equinox was taken to dealer who informed me that the drive shaft was being held in place by one rusty piece of metal. he told me that if i were to hit a bump it would dislodge and would cause a serious accident and harm to car. not good news for a mother. he is replacing this part.

Carrier bearing is bad on my suv. currently, it only makes an annoying noise while the vehicle is in motion. other reports on the internet noted them falling off or needing replacement. internet reports there was a manufacturing defect which has caused a national backorder. this appears to be too common of a problem to not indicate a recall. *tr

My wife told me that there was a vibration around 55mph (2005 chevy equinox). i crawled under the car and notice some type of support on the drive shaft was broken. i found out that it is called the center support bearing. i called all kinds of dealerships all over the united states and canada and found out that there eare few of them out there. and those that are out there the dealers are not releasing. the car has almost 56000 miles on it and we can not get the part. gm says there is nothing they can do about. i have found that there are many others that are having the same problem. i find it kind of odd that there is absolutely nothing that can be done. what are people suppose to do go buy another car because they can't drive the one they have because gm will not supply the part. as of right now there is no fix. *tr

In my 2005 chevrolet equinox awd, the drive shaft center support bearing is blown with only 39,000 miles. symptoms included a shaking felt in the floorboard at 50mph and above that feels similar to an unbalanced wheel. i had the wheels balanced and the mechanic noticed the problem with the drive shaft bearing support. the vehicle cannot be driven without the support due to the risk of damaging the drive shaft possibly leading to an accident, according to the service staff. the dealer reports that the part is on national backorder and that he has 12 people already on the list waiting. a quick search on the internet shows many people with a similar problem. there appears to be no after-market part and the dealer was not forthcoming with timing of availability of the part. seems there is significant demand for the defective part warranting investigation. thank you for your time. *tr

I have a 2005 chevrolet equinox with 48k miles on it. recently i began hearing and feeling a thumping below me. i took it to the local dealer and learned the drive shaft center bearing is shot. dealer told me the car should not be driven as the drive shaft could fall at any time causing the vehicle to flip or roll over. if that is not bad enough he also told me the part is unavailable and is on national back order. we've been waiting over a week now and the dealer is saying he doesn't see any chance of having the part in the next week or two! i see another similar complaint here and according to the sales person who sold the car, the part has been redesigned by gm due to numerous problems with it. clearly this is a safety issue that should be investigated further to determine if gm is working to resolve the problem with an appropriate sense of urgency. *tr

I have had my 2005 chevy equinox, been the first and only owner, since i have purchased it, if i ran through even the smallest mudpuddle i would hear noises coming from underneath the vehicle. now 4 years later the noises are none stop. i took it to a mechanic and he told me the wheel bearing on both sides were bad, just to find out after spending hundreds of dollars in repair bills, the carrier bearing that is on the rear drive shaft is missing. it has fallen out completely and all that remains is the rubber flanges. i have contacted every dealer i can think of and received a part # 25775162 for the bearing and have been told that the part is on national backorder and gm is saying they will not release it to non vip until november, december time frame. had i have been driving the car with the vibration of the driveshaft i could have seriously hurt myself or others. now i am paying for a vehicle, no one has the part that i need to fix it, and i am out of answers. if this is a common problem in which every dealer i have spoken to says it is with the equinox, why is nothing being done? instead everyone with that model year saturn and equinox with the same carrier bearing on the rear driveshaft is either wrecked the vehicle, hurt themselves or others, or allowing there vehicle to sit at a garage, shop or house with no hope of getting it fixed. i have even called gm corporate, and all they give me is we will look into this problem. *tr

My 2005 chevrolet equinox starting making a loud grinding noise when i had just gotten off of the interstate and was applying the brakes and turning. it felt like something was locked from the middle of my car to the back of my car. i was totally caught off guard and was very shaken. i stopped and looked at my tires and to see if anything was hanging down from the car. i couldn't see anything that was obvious. it was 9:00am. i was approximately 2 miles from a chevrolet dealership so i drove there. i was scared and shaken and didn't know if this problem was going to cause me to have a wreck or possibly be stranded. when i got to the dealership, a gentleman in the service department went for a drive with me. my car didn't make the loud grinding, but only a little. he said the service department would take off all 4 wheels and check the brakes. my husband left work to pick me up as this was not going to be done before lunch. the dealership contacted me at work and said it was not the brakes, but it was probably the rear differential, but he wanted to make sure and he would call me after lunch. he asked if i had an extended warranty on the car, i said no, but this should not happen to a 3 year old vehicle that was bought brand new. he agreed. my warranty expired 5 months today, january 24th and my mileage is past the warranty by 1,424 miles. my car has 37,700 miles on it. my husband owns a 1996 chevy s10 pickup with over 200,00 miles on it and nothing this major has ever happened with his truck. i contacted general motors and spoke with a representative. he said he would build a business case document to present to gm board for review. i think gm should pay for expenses to have the dealership replace the rear differential. i made a pun comment that since this cost was around $2400 that i wanted gm to bail me out, compared to the billions they just received from american taxpayers. gm success depends customer satisfaction. again my car only has 37,700 miles on it. *tr

Driving under normal conditions i've experienced two failed front wheel bearings on driver side causing vehicle to vibrate, chevy garage replaced under warranty now upon getting vehicle inspected it was discovered that carrier bushing that connects front driveshaft to rear driveshaft has failed which could cause driveshafts to fall off. car is a 2005 chevy equinox with 35,000 miles on it, i feel gm should recall these vehicles and check these problems out before drivers have a serious accident. people are not reporting these failed components because garages are fixing under warranty so it doesn't get reported to you. i feel these components are defective right from factory so there should be a recall, thank you *tr

I have a 2005 chevy equinox that has experienced multiple electrical problems. first i had ignition problems, air conditioner problems, battery being drained without cause, window control and so forth. each time i took it to the dealer for repairs and each time a repair was made. only after the warranty was out did i discover by accident that the problems were caused by a faulty wiring harness. the main dash wiring harness located in the left floor panel on the driver's side has signs of melting, and shorts with the slightest movement. the shortage causes the air conditioner to stop blowing and will cause the engine to completely die out. i have had the car evaluated by two mechanics who both stated, without knowing someone else had looked at it, that the car is a fire hazard and should be repaired immediately. i also spoke with a local body shop that has repaired at least one equinox that burned due to this same wiring harness. the repairs are currently being made at a cost of $4,000.00. i believe that this is a more wide spread problem than has been reported and hope that others with similar problems will speak out as general motors is unwilling to investigate this. i encourage new car buyers to beware of this company, as i have been sorely disappointed with their product and service. *tr the consumer also stated there was a roaring noise coming from the rear of the vehicle. she later found out there was a problem with differential after being told there was nothing in the rear to cause a noise. updated 12/04/08. *jb
