Overall problem: the abs system kept kicking in at low speed stops and the abs/tc light came on it started out as an occasional abs sensation in the brake pedal, which got worse over a matter of a couple weeks. the times when this occurred, the braking was gentle` and gradual, so it was completely inappropriate for the abs to come on and my braking distance was increased. after the first week the abs/tc light came on and the problem occurred more frequently (example: at least twice on my 15 minute commute). after confirming that it was not a problem with my brakes, the dealer decided it was my wheel hub and i paid for that (expensive) replacement. the problem went away for one day, and then returned even more severely and i was concerned about being able to stop safely. after doing some research on chevroletforum online for others with this issue, we found that it was likely the pigtail wire harness. this was confirmed by the dealer and replaced on that second trip. here's a link to the forum, in case you'd like to see what other's are experiencing: http://chevroletforum.com/forum/equinox-23/2006-chevy-equinox-lt-abs-traction-control-light-problems-41758/page3/. *tr

Abs and traction control light came on. feels like brakes are sticking or not responding. i'll be pressing the gas pedal and as soon as i take my foot off it immediately slows down. when i got out, it smelled like burned rubber and smoke was coming from the brake area. i've been to the dealership twice to get it repaired and nothing has worked so far. i got new brakes and rotors put on 3 months ago and they're already worn out. i've only put on about 1200 miles on them. *tr

Was driving down the road and the engine stalled all the lights came on the dash. have been having major problems with the abs brakes when i pressed on them i had no brakes had to go off side of the road to stop so i wouldn't hit stopped vehicles. then the engine does not want to start back up after it stalls and the traction control light comes on. i've owned the car for 3 years and have had nothing but problems with it. i thought i bought a lemon but when i read other people and their problems with these cars it sounds like their all lemons!! *tr

Since 2008, i have experienced the following problems with brakes grinding & squeaking even after getting them repaired (front and rear brakes / rotors replaced). a couple of days after rear brakes replaced the abs & tc lights were on. i had to have sensors replaced. i have also experienced car not starting and sounding like it is flooding, after lettting car sit for a few minutes it then starts. there is also a popping noise that comes from the back of car after starting the engine. when changing shift from park to drive car occassionally jerks & shoots forward. when pressing the gas, the car takes a few moments then jerks forward. now i'm being told that the transmission is going bad & i have to pay $350 for a diagnostic test to determine if they can rebuild the transmission or have to replace it, which will cost between $1800 to $3000. there is a 2005 chevy equinox power train: automatic transaxle recall but my car is not covered. note: vehicle has been serviced regularly according to the maintainance schedule timetable provided by the manufacturer.

I have had numerous problems with my 2005 awd chevy equinox, including the head gaskets blowing, losing acceleration on the 270/highway, ongoing acceleration problems, and other problems which still continue. i have begged for chevy to help get the car fully repaired and the customer service representatives just keep telling me to bring it into the dealer. i've tried two dealers and returned to the purchasing dealer who will only make repairs if they can pull a code - they report i am having problems with my spark plug wires - first they reattached it, and then replaced one but car still doesn't drive as it did before head gaskets blew. please, please help me - i've had my car in the shop 8 times in 4 months and the dealer and chevy will not provide me with an extended warranty - car warranty ends in 6 months or help repair properly. i am scared to drive this car and don't know what to do as they don't take my concerns seriously as the only way they diagnose is by pulling codes. *tr

I have been having serious problems with the abs in my 2005 chevy equinox. the abs light came on and i had an appointment to have it seen, but in the meantime, the warning light went out and the brakes started to buzz. the day before my appointment to have it fixed, the brakes failed while i was driving. i was standing on the pedal, and the car would not slow. a few seconds later, the abs warning light came on, and i was able to stop the car. the mechanic replaced both front speed sensors (that's what the codes said was wrong). i took it home, and that night, the brakes very briefly buzzed again. the next day, they buzzed again. the 3rd day, the lights came back on but only after i lost my brakes again for a brief moment. the mechanic traced the entire wiring system looking for any problem and found nothing. he finally replaced the right front hub assembly on the second round of maintenance because that was what the code was telling him that time. i picked up the car and when i went out for lunch (about 3 hours later), the brakes buzzed again (no warning light came on this time). that was yesterday. i now have it at the chevy dealer for further diagnosis. so far, they've gotten another code saying that the same hub assembly that was replaced this week is the problem. somehow, i don't think that's the issue. i'm waiting to hear what else had to be fixed and whether it will really ameliorate the problem i'm having.

My 2005 chevy equinox's brakes started vibrating when i would try to stop and then the abs and tc lights would come on. replaced front breaks, was told back breaks were okay. still had the same problem and after awhile the brakes would vibrate even when not breaking and sometimes have trouble stopping until the abs and tc light comes on. 1st diagnostic determined i needed a right front wheel speed scensor. replaced it and 2 days later had the same problem. next i was told it needed the left wheel speed scensor. replaced it. 2 days later starting having the same problem. then i was told it needed the right front wheel bearing. replaced both front wheel bearings. still have a problem only now the breaks only vibrate and lights come on on hills, when turning or going at higher speeds.

I have a 2005 equinox and had to put the car in the shop 3 times now in 3 weeks! the thermostat went out, then the radiator had to be replaced, and now they say the head gasket needs to be replaced. bubbling sound can be heard when you take off from a stop. i'm also having problems with the brakes making acting strangely.. the front shakes when brakes are applied.

2005 equinox bought used in 2007at 35000 miles-i was confused why someone would trade such a new car in-brakes continue to ewar down-ignition had to be replaced, car would just die going down the highway-car almost feels like brakes are being applied when i take my foot off of the gass-tires that i bought 1 year ago are wearing out-

When i first hit the brakes, the car did not brake. there was a grinding sound for about 4 seconds and then the brakes grabbed hard and the vehicle stopped. then the lights came on stating the anti lock brakes and traction control do not work. the next time i started the car, the lights for the anti lock brakes and traction control were not on. i was driving 50 mph. traffic stopped fast. i slammed on my brakes, but the brakes did not work. there was the grinding sound as before, and then i crashed into the car in front of me.

I feel very strong vibrations and grinding in the brakes and the brakes become very stiff and push up against me when applying pressure. it will continue to do this until the abs and tc lights turn on then it runs ok. the mechanics found a speed sensor error when running diagnostics and replaced the left front hub bearing. a day or so later the same thing happened. they did the entire repair again just in case they had defective parts with the same result. they tried bleeding the lines and searching for bad wires, etc until they ran out of ideas. i spent the better part of a month with my 05 equinox in the shop and significant funds on repairs and the issue is still not resolved. it has gotten so bad that i am now forced to get rid of the vehicle. my keys also began getting stuck in the ignition until the entire thing had to be disassembled and ignition switch system replaced. i have since been researching these problems, especially the abs issue and have learned that i am surprisingly one of many with the exact same issue. i don't understand how chevrolet can get away with such a defect without issuing a recall.

All problems arose when the brake from the driver's side would shake when braking. we had the shoes and tha pads changed and the problem seemed to be solved for about a year. then the problem began again but this time the brakes would squeak when braking and then they began to tighten and the brake would lock itself and began to smoke because of the friction the pad and the brake disc were creating since the brake would remain locked. this was only on the drivers side. when this occurred the friction made the whole wheel rim get hot and began producing a burning smell from the brake pad. the caliber, shoes, pad and disc had to be replaced for both front brakes. the brakes continue to squeak when breaking. now, the motor heats up to the red zone, the check engine light comes on even if their is anti-freeze in the engine. when accelerating the motor cools down, but if the speed is less than 35mph the motor heats up more. based on other comments from drivers with the same make, model and year they noticed that the problem has come up to be the head gaskets. this problem has created many problems with the engine and is becoming a safety hazard when their is still a posibility that the breaks will lock up again and possibly spark fire if the problem is not fixed. we have not used our vehicle because of these issues we fear that not fixing the costly problem may damage other parts of the vehicle. we know we are not alone and that other drivers have the same problem with the chevy equinox 2005

Car doesn't start on first attempt. it tries, then even after i release the key it continues to start, like its stuck, i have to pump the gas to get it to start, and it acts flooded. abs and traction control lights on. when i press on the brakes it feels stuck at the top and grinds and pulsates even though my brakes are good. ive had my speed sensors replaced twice , problem still ongoing. i have to push with all my weight for the brakes to break through what ever its stuck on and work, then they lock up. that's when the abs/traction control lights come on, then i know the abs is not trying to work and my brakes will stop me. ive almost crashed into things too many times.

Abs system with brakes huge fail - couldn't stop. abs and no traction light elluminated...dealership diagnosed bad hub, replaced. same issue occurred with 3 days...dealership said old code, cleared. same problem occurred, going to dealership for a third time. no brakes at low speeds when abs tries to engage...once lights eluminate brakes work normally. other people have had issue, dealership not sure of how to fix...should be a recalled issued. have a feeling its a failing wire harness that the dealership won't acknowledge.

The vehicle abs system start to fail at 50,000 miles. when you start driving the vehicle it makes the abs diagnostic and fail the diagnostic. it's continue to make the diag. while your are driving until it fail. then the vehicle continue operating normaly but without abs and traction control. the abs and traction control ligths is on. if you brake in bad wheather the wheels lock and abs don't protect. 3 diferent mechanics try to find the fault unsuccesful. they replaced, abs modules, some brake parts and other parts but the fail continue. this is a very dangerous situation.

I have a 2005 chevy equinox ls. i purchased the vehicle january 2009 seemed to be driving pretty good. i took it out of town and as i began to stop at the stop light the steering felt loose and the wheels moved side to side on its own. i thought it strange but kept on driving. started up the on ramp and the steering wheel had a loose like play in it. didn't think anything of it. started to excel onto the highway and as i began to reach 60 miles per hr the front end started moving loosely left to right. then i started reaching 65 miles per hr and the front bounced and wobbled as if it were going to drop. i had to go 75 miles per hr before the jiggling of the front end of the van stopped. the van drove great at 60 or less. whenever putting on the breaks there would be a crunching noise as if a pole was in the way keeping the foot break from pushing down to the floor. i would have to lightly lift my foot then push it down quickly to stop the van safely. this is very dangerous and should have been taken care of before selling the vehicle.

I have a 2005 chevy equinox that i purchased used in march 2009 from johnny londoff chevrolet. i have been taking it to the dealer for regular maintenance and they would say everything is working properly. i've been experiencing alot of problems with this car since i've purchased it. the air didn't work & i paid to get it fixed only for it to go out again. when i start it sometimes it doesn't want to start, i hear noises like it's misfiring when it does start. i recently had the vehicle serviced & had a multipoint inspection & was told again everything is working properly only to be driving home & when i tried to stop the brakes don't work. i could have had an accident & my child was in the car as well. i had it towed back to them to find out what caused this & they said the hub bearing needs to be replaced & the harness needs to be replaced. it's not gonna be cheap to fix as i'm not under warranty. i want this to be investigated as to why this happened without any warning since i've only had the car about 1 year & 8 mos. the mileage when i bought the car was 53010 & since i have had it i'm only at 62567 miles. i need answers just like others experiencing some of the same problems.

I am submitting this to inform you of the horrible quality and safety of my 2005 chevrolet equinox lt, w/ 3.4l engine. i have just had my engine's headgaskets blow-out at 43,000 miles on a car that has been maintained exactly to manufacturer's specification. the car's braking system is also dangerously under powered. i have worn through two sets of rotors and pads already in 43,000 miles. i do not drive aggressively either. the brakes wear out too quickly and when the rotors warp the braking distances skyrocket and the car vibrates uncontrollably while applying them. this car is a total lemon as i am sure i am not the only person reporting this. just read some reviews on the 2005 equinox and you will see - the 3.4l engine put in this car is a design embarrassment for gm. we need some nhtsa assistance, as chevrolet does not stand behind this product.

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. while approaching a stop light and depressing the brake pedal at speeds under 25 mph, the brake pedal fell into the floorboard and the vehicle continued to accelerate into an intersection. the brakes would not engage. the vehicle was towed to the dealer where they found the transmission module was defective. repairs were made under the contacts factory warranty. on a separate occasion, while utilizing the cruise control mechanism, he tapped on the brake pedal to shut off the cruise control and it would not deactivate. he continued to depress the brake pedal and moments later, the cruise disengaged. there were no repairs made to the cruise control mechanism. there were no recalls on his vehicle. the failure and current mileages were 50,000.

At highway speeds, any attempt at braking resulted in rapid pounding. this was not the abs activating. the car was brought to the dealer (o'keefe chevrolet, ipswich, ma) for inspection. according to the service manager, the inspection showed that the front disc brakes were seriously worn down and both the brake pads and the rotors needed to be replaced. the car had slightly less that 18,000 miles on it. it was out of the 36 month warranty due to the elapsed time. the dealer refused any warranty consideration for the car. my concern was that the brake pads wore out in a short period of mileage. the service manager at o'keefe stated that this was due to lack of use. needless to say, i found this to be unbelievable. i asked how the brakes could be worn down by lack of use. do they deteriorate standing still in my driveway? i contacted chevrolet customer service to further explore this failure. chevrolet's only response was that the car was out of warranty and nothing would be done. my questions about the brakes failing at low mileage was ignored by the customer service representative as she was not technically trained. my concern in the matter is that the brakes used for the 2005 equinox were of substandard quality. this place both me and my family in a hazardous position using the car. at 18,000 miles, you don't expect a problem to be the brakes. chevrolet has ignored my concerns. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2005 chevrolet equinox. when the contact depressed the brake pedal, she noticed excessive vibration and a humming noise coming from the front end of the vehicle. the dealer replaced the rear bearings and shaved the rotors. one year later, the failure recurred and she took the vehicle back to the dealer. they replaced the struts, sway bar, and the two front tires at the cost of over $1,000. the technician stated that the sway bar would have to be replaced because it was made of plastic. the contact is in the process of having the vehicle realigned. the failure mileage was 35,000 and current mileage was 42,000.

We have a 2005 chevy equinox, as my mechanic would say, is a problem child. we have experienced what most have with the odor coming from the cooling system. our biggest complaint in with the suspension, and now the abs system. it took several visits to figure out why our vehicle was making loud noises in the front end. it all started while i was driving it around a sharp corner. from that day on, which was about six months ago, till present time the car has been load. we have an excellent mechanic. the noise in the front turned out to be the strut plates. this cost us $300 per side. we thought we had solved the issues except for about a week ago a louder noise stared. it felt and sounded like the car was going to break in two. we brought it back to our mechanic. this time it was the suspension system again. i do not know what it is called. there is a rod that is from the top of the strut that goes down to the wheel. these both needs to be replaced. the vehicle is at the shop now. thank fully theses rods only cost $30 a piece. the vehicle only has 46000 on it. then we can talk about the abs system. not every time but quite frequently we would back the car up and they abs would engage. only way to fix this was through replacing the sensors on the wheels. in not knowing which sensor is bad we would have to replace all of them which would amout to at least $1200. the good news or not such good news, however you want to look at it, the abs system is engaging going forward now, on dry pavement while braking. at least the mechanics should be able to find the falty sensor now that it is happening all of the time. shame on us for not doing our research before we bought the vehicle. *tr

My driver side window will not go up or down, it just failed completely. the dealership advised that the wires inside the door are completely broken. the system needed to fix it is back ordered so i have to wait to have it replaced. four days later my brakes became the new problem. on my way to school, i was approaching a stop light and began applying the brakes but the car would not stop. it made a vibrating noise and thrust itself forward. it wasn't a grinding sound but clicks and vibration. luckily there wasn't anyone in front of me or coming from the opposite direction. i thought it something i did and continued driving carefully. at the next stop i was unable to slow down to make a right hand turn. i passed the turn completely before the car slowed enough to turn. this scared me so i pulled over and called for help. after taking a test drive with a car repair person who informed me it wasn't my brake pads or rotors. he said it sounded like my anti-lock system failing and i should call the dealership. i called the dealership and they said to bring it in. gm roadside assistance towed it. that was saturday and today is monday, the dealership worker told me she drove it and she has been driving for 12 years and she didn't have a problem with the brakes but they will put it on the electric diagnostic machine to double check it. i am afraid to drive with my children. the fact that the car may not stop or the brakes may fail at any time is scary. i should hear from them by this evening. *jb

Vehicle's antilock brakes failed to bring vehicle to stop on 4 separate occasions during the past 2 weeks. all occurrences were during or immediately following a measurable snowfall. in the first incident my vehicle was approaching a very busy intersection at not more than 15 mph when the brakes failed with load grinding noise and slid thought the stop light, fortunately without accident. in the 2nd and 3rd occurrences, my wife was unable to bring the vehicle to a stop due to the same type of brake failure and noise, resulting in her going of the shoulder into a ditch to avoid collision. and finally the next day which is a monday, i was taking the vehicle to our chevrolet dealership to have the brakes checked when once again, while slowing down to approach 5-10 mph while approaching a stop light, i nearly rear-ended a school bus due to another occurrence of not being able to brake. a brake mechanic at the dealership took the car for a test drive on the back lot for 2 minutes and declared the brakes worked fine. further persistence prompted the service manager to take the car for a street test drive and upon his return he stated the brakes worked fine for him. i have been driving for almost 40 years and have never been more frightened to drive a car on ice or snow as i am with this vehicle, which by the way does not handle well in wind either. i am not happy with the response of my dealership and feel these occurrences are very similar if not exactly the same as those that prompted a similar recall of gm 1999 -2002 model trucks and suv vehicles in 2005. *nm

We purchased a 2005 chevy equinox in september of 2005. through our research, this was one of the only vehicles that would accommodate 2 rear facing child seats with safe operation. the equinox now has approximately 16, 000 miles on it. on 11 november 2006, my wife and our 14 month old twin daughters were on their way to visit her friend. i receive a phone call from my wife. she is frantically screaming to me that something is wrong with the equinox. she explains that when she applies the brakes at speeds above 45 -50 mph, she is experiencing a violent shaking of the vehicle's front end and the steering wheel, and feels that she would not be able to stop the vehicle in an emergency situation. i advise her to decrease her speed and continue to her friends house and that i will return home and take our subaru to meet her. we switch vehicles. once on the highway, i accelerate to approximately 65-70 mph and notice traffic backing up due to police activity down the road. i apply the brakes slightly and the equinox begins to shake violently to the point that it feels as though the front wheels are pulling in opposite directions, and i am having a difficult time keeping the vehicle between the marked lanes. the steering wheel is also shaking and i have to grip it tightly to hold on. i don't recall having experienced a steering wheel shake this violently. after decreasing to about 50 mph, the shaking subsided to the point that the vehicle was controllable within the lanes. this occurred several more times during the ride home, so i sustained a speed that was safe for myself and the other motorists. a trip that would take a little over an hour took about 2 hours to complete with minimal traffic. being that this occurred over a weekend, we have not been able to get the chevy to the dealership or a repair station to have it checked. after having the chevy checked i will notify your administration of the outcome. *nm

Complaint received via e-mail. the vehicle has been in for repairs 3 times, and i am waiting on a call from the dealer next week for updated information. the problems are: 1) foul odor, hoses for anti-freeze system replaced per bulletin; 2) rear squeaking, lubed same; 3) transmission. i originally thought brakes, but was told that the transmission had to be reprogrammed, and that it would continue to adjust itself according to driving conditions/ each driver's habits, and 4) popping noise heard when starting or when stopped with foot on brake. noise seems to be coming from gas tank area. asked for fuel line/exhaust system to be checked. as of this time repair center cannot duplicate this problem, and have no ideas. the car has been to the dealer 3 times and a total of 6 days. the transmission problem is in limbo as they are 'looking into it' and will call me back.*ak

My wife and i bought this 2005 equinox in march of 2005. it had 9k miles on it. a few times after that it did not sound like it was going to start. when it did the whole vehicle shook, it was like starting a manual in gear. at around 12k miles the front end started shaking when the were brakes applied. took it in to be serviced in february 2006 and asked them to check brakes. they said there was no problem. they did not feel anything. contacted chevrolet and the customer service told me to take the vehicle back to the dealership and have them check the brakes again. when we did they told us the rotors were warped. this should not be happening already. still has half the life on the brakes. today we took it in to have the shocks and struts replaced. this was due to a loud noise we kept hearing. hopefully that fixed that problem. as far as the brakes and rotors, the dealership told us not to worry about having new rotors put on until the brakes were worn. it is really dangerous on the interstate when someone slows down in front of you when you're doing 50 to 65 mph and it don't feel like your going to stop. we were told this wasn't covered under warranty. something should be done about this. i am done with chevrolet. *jb
