On 7 feb. 2013 i took my vehicle into my local chevy dealer to have it checked out as there was a constant smell of fuel. i was informed that the fuel tank would need to be dropped to locate the cause of the fuel leak though there was no visible sign of leaking fuel. i was informed that the fuel module that set above the fuel tank had cracked and was causing the smell/leak. i was infomed that to repair the issue it would cost me over $1200.00 to repair. i contacted gm and was informed that my vehicle was not involved in the current recall that is ongoing in four other states. i inquired as to why and was informed that my vehicle was not registered nor did i reside in one of the states and there was nothing they could do. i informed gm that it should not matter as to were i lived that they should recall all equinox as this is a safety issue that should be corrected. i was given reference # from gm in case there is a decision to recall the equinox for this problem. as other complaints have stated it should not matter were the vehicle is registered if there is this type of problem it should be fixed by gm at no cost to the consumer. *tr

When i went to start the engine it would take a while, shortly after, we started noticing a very strong smell of gasoline coming from the fuel receptacle which got worse as time went by. a mechanic told us after inspecting that the fuel tank had a bad leak but wouldn't touch it because he know of a recall for this problem. when we took it to the dealer it turned out it was the fuel pump but we were told that the recall did not apply to my vehicle.

I kept smelling a strong odor of gasoline and even when people would just walk by my vehicle the could smell it. i looked online to see if there was a safety problem like this and there was a recall on my type of vehicle for this very same problem. i called trying to get it fixed without me having to pay for it but they said my vin number was not one that was recalled. i had to get it fixed becuase i was a safety hazard. it cost me $790 and i am a single mother and can't afford to pay for it myself. i think it is only right that i be reimbursed for my costs.

The equinox appears to have a fuel system failure. i have looked up equinox recalls and there are over 40,000 of the same year, make model, my vin is not included. the car has a strong gas smell coming from the back of the car. i have read testimony after testimony online of other people with the same year make and model also not being included in the recall. last year we had to replace the egr valve as well and it appears it is in similar circumstance. (registering hundreds of complaints for it's failure as well) we would certainly like gm to make a totally recall on the fuel system failure that is evidentally extremely more wide spread than they are acknowledging. the dealership has said it is more than likely going to have to replace the pump starting at $900, as a teacher this is not a reasonable feat. please help us get this problem fixed for both the fuel system and the egr valve. thanks!

Detected smell of gasoline while parked among many other cars. did not think much of it until at home detected smell of gasoline inside and out of the vehicle. look around and saw gas dripping from the rear passenger side of car. check under the car and it seemed like gas leaking from the top of the gas tank. took vehicle to dealer and agreed on repair. dealer had previously said cost would be approximately 500 dollars. when vehicle was at the garage i was told over 900 dollars to repair. i agreed, hoping there would eventually be a recall, since i had read of many complains on line. i was able to get the labor charged refunded to me. a few months later i received a safety recall notice. the letter specifically says your 2007 model year chevrolet equinox, vin xxxxxxxxxxxxx is involved in safety recall 12190. etc. when to dealer, and the service guy say your vehicle does not show any open recalls and that only certain one have that fuel pump module recall. i told him look at the letter but i got nowhere. true i had the vehicle repaired, but the letter mentions a refund. plus, did i get the right replacement part or some other generic part? so why does my letter say your....is involved in safety recall..yet the dealer's system says no to this recall. by the way i did buy it in california and it's register also at california. *tr

(registering hundreds of complaints for it's failure as well) we would certainly like gm to make a totally recall on the fuel system failure that is evidentally extremely more wide spread than they are acknowledging. the dealership has said it is more than likely going to have to replace the pump starting at $900, as a teacher this is not a reasonable feat. please help us get this problem fixed for both the fuel system and the egr valve. thanks!

A fuel leak in the area of the fuel tank was detected. at first it was thought that the tank had cracked, but after the fuel tank was dropped a cracked plastic supply line leading into the fuel pump was found. i had the module replaced at my own expense. after the fuel pump was replaced i heard of a recall issued by gm for this exact problem, but when i contacted them they said that the recall was specific to certain vin numbers that were located in the states of arizona, nevada and texas and as my vehicle is registered in ny this recall does not cover my vehicle. how can a safety recall be issued for a specific problem and not cover all vehicles that have the same problem. the risk of fire from my leaky fuel pump was the same as the cars located in those other states. this makes absolutely no sense to me. a safety defect is a safety defect, no matter what state a car is in and should apply to all vehicles that have the same defect.. gm's refusal to remedy this is unconscionable and does nothing to enhance there reputation of building quality cars and standing behind them. *tr

Noticed a strong smell of gas coming from the vehicle when parked. had to move it out of garage as smell was extremely strong. took car in for service 8/25/12, found that the plastic part of the fuel pump was cracked and cost approximately $909 to repair. find out there is a recall for this very same issue (nhtsa campaign id number: 12v459000), as well a corresponding recall for same issue on select suzuki xl7 (nhtsa campaign id number:12v597000). i contacted gm customer assistance by phone (800-243-8872) to find out if my vehicle was covered, was told no, only because it was not originally titled in one of the following states originally sold or currently registered in arizona, california, nevada, and texas. was told by gm customer assistance that they would contact me if it was decided that my vehicle would be covered. i have not heard anything from them, i can provide a case # upon request. what difference does it make where the car was titled, did not my vehicle come down the same assembly line. so in effect because my car is not covered it is ok that the fuel pump cracked, and had it caught or caused a fire that would be ok as well. would like some assistance to get gm to acknowledge that this is the same issue, not penalize me because i live in ohio and reimburse me the cost for the repair $909.

Began smelling strong fuel smell on passenger side of vehicle. took vehicle in for service and was informed the fuel feed line was cracked and had caused a fuel leak. fuel pump assembly had to be replaced. *tr chevrolet equinox 2007 models have a current recall (id 12v459000) that was issued in september 2012 for this exact issue; however the recall doesn't include georgia. the manufacturer would not cover the cost of this repair under the recall even though they confirmed that it was the same issue. this is a safety concern and the recall should be expanded to all states. this is a costly repair and should be covered since it is an obvious defect that they have already claimed responsibility for in other states.

As documented in the following formal - current notices, 2007 equinox has a serious fuel leak problem from the fuel pump, which, as gm notes, may cause a fire if ignition source is present. // gm - chevy - recall id# 93254 // // gm - chevy - service bulletin # 12190 // // nhtsa campaign id number: 12v459000 // the problem is, they are not covering all vehicles. my 2007 chevy equinox is leaking fuel from the fuel pump - but gm/chevy is not replacing, as my vin is not covered. this is obviously a very serious problem that we're requesting be further investigated before a serious injuries occur. thank you for looking into this immediately. *tr

I had been smelling a strong odor of gas so i took it to my mechanic to have a diagnosis of the problem, he said that there was a leak in the top of the gas tank and i should get ahold of gm to see what type of recall there was on this problem.so when i got home i checked on line and found there was a recall #12v45900, so i got ahold of gm and talked to customer rep. [xxx] telling her the problem i was having she said that she would have to have another person contact me , so [xxx] called me , i again told her the problem and she said i would have to take it to a chevrolet dealership for a diagnosis, i told here i had already had one done but she said i had to have one done at the dealership , so with her on the line she called reliable chevrolet and we set me a appointment for october 17th @ 8am. so on october 17th i took my equinox to the dealership and they ran there diagnosis and told me the same thing i had already told them, also charging me $98.55 for that information, they also told me they would need to remove the gas tank to check further and that would take about 4 hrs @ $98.55 per hr, i told them i could not afford to have that done and i would contact gm as soon as i got home, they also said i shouldn't be driving it cause it was dangerous . [xxx] contacted me back the next day and said there was nothing gm could do for me even though they know there is a problem but because the recall has not been published they cant help me.she also told me i could have it repaired myself and when they published the recall i could get reimbursed. i told her i work a minimum wage job and could not afford that. i again ask her if they know there is a problem why not fix it and again she said that the recall has not been published and there was nothing they would do for me. all i am asking is to get my equinox fixed and no longer have a gas smell. *tr

Started smelling gas in the garage, though it was lawn mower, removed it, still smelled, progressively got worse, smelled around gas tank, and caused me headaches and started coming into the house. car also started having problems turning over (probably due to gas not getting to engine so well). started parking outside and checking your site for recall since i heard one was out there for 2007 equinox, but it ended up my vin # and state are not included. i contacted gm and they set up appt. on 10/29/12 to evaluate and i took it in to find out it was the exact issue on nhtsa camp. #12v459000 listed on this site - which was a cracked fuel pump module. gm contacted local chevy dealer farrell cheverolet and they worked out a 50% discount on the repair. i told the lady at gm that i would also issue this complaint so that all equinox vehicles in 2007 might get included in this recall, since i am not the only one having this problem and possibly i could get the rest of my charges returned if included. this is definitely a safety issue and could have turned out worse if my house burned down or something. *tr

I have noticed that finally there is a recall . i am saddened to see that unfortunately this recall is not included in florida. i just never knew that a big company would not care for the safety of the drivers and passengers! i do not have the money to fix it, and i am scared that something bad will happen while i am driving it in with children. i dont understand why my car is not being recalled. i feel it is unfair to only recall certain states when there are others like me in florida with this serious problem. this problem is very serious, it leaks gasoline!!!.peoples lives are at risk! will gm care when someone dies here in florida!. when i heard about the recall i was so happy, then called gm, only to be told i am not in the state for the recall, which is so unfair!!!!!!. i was also told if i felt it was serious, and scared that i should get it fixed and that they would reimburse me if the recall eventually affects my vehicle. i just felt the same cold shoulder i recieved when i complained to gm about my pasenger airbag! . if something happens because of this it would be pretty sad that they could have helped people like me and my family. i feel like i need to let you know this is so serious. i dont want to have to hire a lawyer, call the news, just for gm to do what is the right thing to do for other states, like florida! i pray nothing bad happens and that it should not be only a few states, it should be the all vehicles with the problem for the recall, and florida is a very warm state. please thank you for listening and i do hope that all the other people like myself get this problem resolved from gm, for the safety of us and all other drivers in case of a serious accident! they should not wait for us in florida before its to late.  Have a 2007 equinox with fuel leak at top of fuel tank. dealer says same issue as the ones with the recall notice, yet my vehicle is not on the list. dealer says $1300 to repair unless i receive recall notice, but it probably would not happen. dealer also stated have seen several vehicles with same issue and not on recall list. if so many vehicles have same defect, then why are they not all being recalled? does there have to be a fire or explosion or fatality before something general motors does something? *tr

I purchased the vehicle on 8/26/11 at greenway chevrolet in orlando, florida at 87k mileage. i smell gas coming from the rear right wheel area and took the vehicle to david maus in sanford, florida on 5/1/12 told them to check vehicle for the smell and to get an oil change and tire rotation. at that time the vehicle mileage is 99883. they said that they didn't see anything wrong to make the gas smell. so i continued to drive the vehicle when the scent got stronger and stronger then i witness gas visible leaking so i took the vehicle back to david maus in sanford for repair. they then confirmed the fuel pump leak.so i had to replace it. i also contact general motors for the first time to advised of the fuel pump malfunction, and they advised that there is nothing they can do and its considered wear and tear and not a manufacturer defect. now there is a recall on certain chevrolet equinox fuel pump so i contact general motors for the second time and they advised that my vehicle/vin was not included on the recall. i also open a claim with the bbb (better business bureau) which contact gm once more and they call me and advised that i would not qualify for any reimbursement, not even under the power train warranty. i feel that the recall on the fuel pump leak should include my vin# [xxx]. information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6). *tr

Our 2007 chevy equinox developed a fuel leak from the fuel pump causing a strong odor of gasoline when driving and when parked. we heard on the news that there was a recall on 2007 equinox for defective fuel pumps that leaked. we contacted general motors and they informed us that our vehicle was not part of the recall. we paid for the repairs ourselves. is there any way that we can be reimbursed for the repair costs? we currently have the defective fuel pump.

Parked the car in the garage, and came back out a few minutes later and gasoline fumes were overwhelming. removed it from garage and saw puddle of gasoline near the back gas tank, underneath the car. before i took it to the dealership the next morning, looked up online to see if anyone else had experienced this problem with this model of car. i found six (6) pages of complaints for the same thing. it was the pressure hose to pump line resulting from a faulty pump. i also noted that the majority of these pump failures happened around the same mileage, which tells me there should be some type of recall on these pumps and pump lines. if i had not gone back into the garage, i am sure i would have had a major fire in the garage or in the car. *tr

I been smelling gas for over a week outside then inside of car. was told i can drive and bring to dealership asap as long as there is no leaks. i took car to the dealer in jenkintown,pa and was told there was a leak from fuel pump line to engine. i notice several customers have the same problem since 2010 and now it's 2012. why haven't this been on a recall due to it can be very dangerous with a gas leak when a customer smells gas but don't see a leak. customers can think maybe gas spilled a little on car but when you smell gas when you are driving, there is an issue. i know customers like myself had paid for this service which should have been a recall. i had to pay $949 for part and labor which is totally unfair when i'm not the only one with this issue. i will report to consumer report regarding 2007 chevy equinox with all the issues i had from getting a transmission to now gas leak. very very dangerous! *tr

Several months back i started noticing a strong gas smell coming from the right side rear near the exhaust of my vehicle. i have been told that the tank has to be dropped (a very expensive service) to determine the issue with fuel and that there is a visible leak when the car is parked and running. i have noticed that there are numerous complaints about this same problem from other 2007 chevy equinox owners. this is obviously a manufacture defect that needs to addressed by a proper recall. this defect is very dangerous and could be fatal if not fixed. *tr

This vehicle started having a strong odor of gas that was filling up my garage and home. took it to the dealership who told me that this car is very dangerous to drive due to huge gas leak. it cost $300 to have the fuel tank dropped to find out the problem. i was told it was the fuel pump assembly which cost $800 to get fixed. i was also advise this is becoming a common problem with these car. i have a newborn and a 5 year old that was riding in the car with a gas leak. my car has to remain in the shop until i can come up with the money to have it repaired. this is not only a health issue but someone could die as a result of this. a recall is needed immediately before someone life is taken. if something is not done soon, i will be contacting the media and have this issue placed on the news due to several other complaints about this same problem from other people. *tr

Very strong smell of gasoline fumes coming from right rear of vehicle. discovered a puddle of gasoline directly under the gas tank- the fuel was leaking from above and dripping along the side of the tank. took the vehicle to dealer for service and they found that the fuel pump module was leaking. fuel pump/hose assembly was replaced under powertrain warranty at no cost. clearly a very dangerous situation with the potential for fire. with two young children that ride in this car i find it very concerning that there are so many similar fuel leak complaints with this vehicle and no recall has been issued. *tr

I have had my equinox since 2008; it is a 2007 model. i have had continual repairs on the electrical rear lights and the belt tensioner, but this next repair is by far the worst. when the car was in park position the odor of gasoline was strong around the perimeter of the car. when driving, the smell of gas circulated into the air conditioning system penetrating the inside of the car. the smell was strongest on the outer side by the gas tank. i took the car to get a diagnostic test and found a leak above the gas tank. further inspection revealed the fuel pump was leaking gasoline, about six inches from the muffler. this defect could have resulted in serious injury or fatalities as i regularly carry children in the back seat. this car is only 5 years old and it seems to require too many repairs for the few years/miles it has traveled. as a thoughtful vehicle owner, i take precautions to preserve the life of my vehicle through regular maintenance and covered storage from natural elements. certainly these kinds of defects are not an expected occurrence in this kind of vehicle. disappointed equinox owner :( *tr

Noticed a strong smell of gasoline eminating from the rear passenger side exterior of the car last week. after not using the car for a couple of days - the problem reoccured this morning. i did a quick search online and found alot of complaints relating to fuel leaks / fuel pump / fuel module problems associated with the 2007 equinox. i called my local chevrolet dealer and was told that there is no recall at this time and all repairs are the responsibility of the owner. *tr

On approximately july 9, 2012 we smelled gas fumes from our 2007 chevrolet equinox. it happened one or two more times after that. on july 19 we noticed the smell was very strong and we became concerned. i called the dealer where we take the car, mike anderson chevrolet in chicago, and told them we were bringing the car in due to a gas smell and a possibly dangerous problem with the car. after they checked the car, they told me they had to drop the fuel tank to see where the leak was. they did that and found that the leak was in the lines that ran from the fuel pump. they estimated the cost of repair at approximately $1300. i told them to go ahead with the repair. i then contacted chevrolet to see if there was anything they could do since we had such low mileage on the car. after approximately 4 days, chevrolet agreed to pay 15% of the cost of repair. *tr

I have barely 60,000 miles, never wrecked or compromised. i bought it with 8,000 miles in 2008. i began to smell raw fuel inside and outside of my vehicle a few weeks ago and thinking that it may go away, but didn't. i have had debilitating headaches from it and my husband rode with me one day and said that this was not normal. i took it to a local mechanic to diagnose that it was a definite leak in the tank area, but without taking the tank down completely, he could not diagnose the exact spot. come to find out, it is the fuel pump that is being replaced. i am now going to be out $900.00 (including labor-which was $353). i loved this vehicle, but now with the health scaret to myself and my young son, my thoughts of buying another chevrolet product is being compromised. i am 2 payments away from paying it off. this is not a normal problem and should be considered as a defect in the manufacturing. please assist promptly.  Anytime we start the equinox up, all you smell is raw gasoline smell. it fills up the cabin, and gives me bad headaches. we had looked for obvious leaks but didn't see any at first. we weren't losing much if any gas mileage, until the last 2 tanks when it's gotten worse. my coworkers know when i get to work without seeing me because the fuel odor is so bad, they can smell me upon arrival. i have been having headaches frequently, and sometimes even feel nauseated. last monday was the first time, my husband was driving behind me in our other vehicle and he told me to pull over at the next gas station, because i was actually leaking fuel this time. i was scared to death, here i still had about 20-25 miles to drive before getting home, and yet i am like a traveling explosion waiting to happen. i researched monday night and found that there are tons of others in our same boat. this is a danger to us, and everyone else on the road when it gets ready to blow. gm needs to back up their products and do a mandatory recall before people get killed from their negligence. we like most of the people who have filed complaints have been quoted well over $1000-1800 to fix this problem. like most others, we are struggling for money, and now have one less vehicle we can drive, but still owe on it, so we're stuck. this is not right, what is it going to take, someone dying before gm will recall this??? ## vin passed ## chevy equinox 2007 ## *tr

After returning home from a 2 hour road trip i noticed a heavy gasoline odor in my garage. the next morning when i went to start my vehicle it had trouble starting and the heavy gasoline odor persisted. i could also smell gasoline inside the cab of the vehicle while driving. i took the vehicle to a mechanic and he determined that the fuel pump/fuel sending unit had a crack on the top of the housing. when the vehicle is running it would spray fuel out of the pump housing. very dangerous because the exhaust runs very close to the fuel tank and fuel sending unit. the entire fuel pump and sending unit had to be replaced at a cost of $880. *tr

Strong smell of gasoline is noticed after vehicle is started and ran. checking beneath fuel tank, it is visible that gasoline is leaking from pump/connections area on top of tank. also has the leak in vicinity of exhaust creating a potential fire hazard, not to mention health hazard from breathing fuel vapors. the exhaust will need to be removed to facilitate removal of fuel tank in order to correct or replace leaking pump. the vehicle is still in operable condition and a person would assume that external leakage would result in a safety recall to repair manufacturing defect. normally you do not have a leakage of the pump before a complete failure of said pump. i personally think the manufacturer should recall and pay for repairs. and if a person has already made the repair that the repair fees be reimbursed. vehicle does not in my opinion have enough age or miles to be having this problem. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a chevrolet equinox. while parked, the contact smelled fuel inside and outside of the vehicle. there was no fuel visible on the ground. the vehicle was taken an authorized dealer who stated the fuel pump module would need to be replaced. the vehicle was in the process of being repaired. the manufacturer was not notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 14,985. js

*tr

While driving my equinox, i smelled gas and thought i had wasted gas when i went to the gas station. after smelling gas for weeks, my husband checked the truck and found it had gas leaking from it. i took the truck to the dealership and they found that it was leaking from the fuel assembly and stated that this was a common ongoing problem with this vehicle. after calling gm they refuse to correct this problem and states that if your warranty has expired there is nothing they can do. after checking online i found that there are tons of complaints from fellow equinox owners about this defect and i feel that chevy should be made to offer a recall and be forced to fix this problem before someone gets killed. *tr

In the process of having a flat tire repaired on the right rear of the vehicle the mechanic discovered a fuel leak. i called the dealer and took the car to be looked at and repaired. i was told there was a special bulletin concerning the fuel leaks. i provided the vin and the service manager checked and said this vehicle was not included. i stated this is a major safety issue but gm does not want to correct the issue. i had the vehicle repaired at $1100 for the safety of my family. i will seek compensation from gm myself. gm would not help the dealer because of the mileage. it should not matter about the mileage for this fuel leak because of the proximity of the leak right next to the exhaust system. gm needs to recall the equinox and reimburse those who have had expensive repairs. this will cost gm more in the future over lawsuits when someone is severely injured or killed because of the vehicle exploding!!! *tr

Apparently, there are a large number of complaints about 2006-2007 chevrolet equinox having a strong fuel smell around the vehicle. in most cases, the fuel leakage is coming from the fuel pump assembly, an o-ring or gasket connecting to the tank itself is usually the cause of the leakage, causing fuel to pool on the top of the tank. leaking fuel is a safety hazard and could cause fire and explosion if ignited, fuel vapors are unhealthy to inhale and fuel vapors are generally not good for the environment. the repair is expensive in labor as it involves dropping the fuel tank. chevrolet needs to issue a manufacturer recall for this problem and reimburse those who have already paid for he repair. *tr

I just took my equinox to the chevy dealer today 7-10-2012 to have a gas leak repaired. i had been smelling raw fuel since feb. of this year. recently smell had worsened,so at work while enjoying my lunch in my vehicle, while putting my cigarette out, i smelled gas worse than ever. got flashlight and looked under truck to see a gas leak, which i thought to be coming from filler tube. anyway got call from dealer while writing this, he says he needs to drop the tank, leak is on top,oh yeah warranty won't cover. nice! 934$ later i just arrived home and repairman from chevy calls, says he's not sure he tightened gas tank straps. lol you've got to be kidding me,so i go back strap is fine and leak is stopped. its turns out to be the same problem 90% of us have had- fuel pump failure. my question at this point is if chevy does have to issue a recall, what about those of use who already had to get the repair? do we get notified? more importantly do we get reimbursed. *tr

The vehicle has been smelling like gas after driving. the smell is in the car after driving, parking for a few and getting back in the car. i have yet to go get it checked but have only had it for 2years. i see that there are now over 200 of the same complains and i am not willing to put in $1700 into a practically new car. a recall is in order!! *tr

There is a fuel leak from the seal around the fuel pump on the top of the gas tank. this failure has been reported in several other customer vehicles of the same make/model/year. fuel will pool up on top of the tank and drip down the side and onto the frame and exhaust pipes creating a risk of fire/explosion.

Noticed a very strong gas smell coming from right rear of vehicle (where gas tank is located). at first i thought it was just a dirty fuel filter, but did some research online and was astounded to find out that approximately 200 2007 equinox owners were having the same problem. i took my vehicle in for service on 6/26/2012 and was told that the fuel pump was leaking. in my research i discovered that other owners had: fuel tank leaking; fuel pump and fuel sensor replaced; fuel pressure modular; faulty fuel lines; cracked fuel tank; gas tank seam near pump/sending unit assemply separated & leaking; plastic gas tank had a crack; vapor cannister; cracked fuel pump pipe; fuel line from fuel pump to engine cracked; fuel pump module at connector; and on and on and on!!! this appears to be a component failure/manufacturing defect and a recall should be issued. this is a safety and health issue - the potential for one of these vehicles exploding (possibly with deaths) is great. inhaling gasoline fumes brings concentrated hydrocarbons into your lungs and bloodstream. some of the ingredients in gasoline are extremely toxic and are mutagens. liver damage and permanent brain damage are possibilities. make general motors do the right thing and issue a recall!!!!!

I started smelling gas fumes on the 14th of june 2012. they got worse until i took the chevy to a dealer in kingman az. they found that their was a gas leak at the top of the gas tank. to correct this problem you have to remove the whole rear end to correct. the car is an awl which makes it more difficult to remove. the dealer suggested that we do not drive the car as of the fuel danger. because of this we were forced to buy a new car which we really did not want to do.
