Driver side internal door handle broke off leaving the door inoperable unless the electric window is opened and the hand put over the door and opened on the outside of the car. this is also a hazard because if the car battery is dead then how do you get out of the car?

Drivers door is broken, have to roll window down to get out, also, remote is not working, i have to lock/unlock with the horn honking everytime i park. after doing a search online, i found that a lot of other people have had the same problem, and it seems to stem from the fact, that chevy has decided not to be built like a rock, instead, built with plastic. (can you even recycle it?)

05/15/201116000
Inside door handle on my 2006 chevrolet hhr broke off when i opened the door. this creates a safety issue for the driver as the door cannot be opened from the inside without lowering the left front window and opening with the outside handle. if the electrical system is damaged then the window will not open. the driver would then need to crawl over the center console to the right door or the front seat to exit the cars rear door. in a collision or fire the driver may be injured, panicked or confused and not be able to exit the vehicle. the plastic handle should be replaced with a more substantial metal one.

The interior door handles on the 2006 chevrolet hhr fell off. the only way to fix it is to replace the entire door panel just for the cheap plastic handle for approximately $500.00. if i was in an accident and the car would not start again, i could not get out of the car through the driver's side because i would not be able to roll down the window to open the door from the outside. or if the car were on fire, i simply would not be able to escape. this needs to be a recall item as this is a huge safety factor. a bigger safety factor that the latch on the pop up middle console on the chevy hhr that was recalled back in 2008 (i think). there are blogs all over the internet of people like me who are experiencing the same problem. i am a single working girl who simply cannot afford a $500 interior door panel replacement for a cheap plastic handle because this is not reasonable. i tried to get chevy to replace it and they simply said they would give me a $40 discount. that is ridiculous!!! i bought the car be cause it was economical and not one thing about this replacement sounds economical. this is a safety hazard and could lead to a death.

I have a 2006 hhr. while trying to exit out the passenger side door the door handle broke in my hand so now anyone sitting there has to open the window an reach out and open the door (or someone has to open for them). the other problem i just encountered is that the door open message and dinging noise keeps coming up while i am driving. the door is not open! also, the radio won't shut off when you turn the car off and open the door. when pushing the inside lock/unlock button on the driver's side, all the doors lock except the driver's side. it goes down, but comes back up. my mechanic thinks it is a door latch problem. also the alarm goes off by itself after locking the car with the remote. i was awoken at 3:00 am to the sound of my car going off, this has never happened before! gm needs to do some recalls on these items, as i see a lot of complaints concerning the same items.

Tl* the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that while attempting to exit the vehicle, the interior driver door handle fractured. the contact was unable to reach for the exterior door handle and fifteen minutes later, was assisted in exiting the vehicle when the exterior handle was used to open the door. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the failure where he was advised that the entire door would need replacing in order to correct the failure. the vehicle was not repaired and the door handle remained fractured. in addition, the keys would sporadically become stuck in the ignition and the contact would have to engage the emergency release button in order to disengage the keys. the vehicle was taken to the dealer where he was advised that the ignition lock cylinder and remote would need replacing. the vehicle was not repaired. the failure mileage was 21,000 and the current mileage was 27,920.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while the vehicle was parked the contact attempted to get out of the vehicle and the drivers side door handle broke. someone passing by the vehicle open the door from outside of the vehicle. the contact was trapped in the vehicle for 15 minutes. the contact was unable to open the door she was unable to reach the outside handle. the vehicle was taken to the dealer for the failure. the dealer advised him in order to replace the handle they could have to take off the door and it would be costly. the door handle had been broken since february 2010. the vehicle had not been repaired. the contact also stated that the key get stuck in the ignition and it was very difficult to get it out. he stated he had to use the trap door under the ignition and press a button to get the key out. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and he was advised that the cost to repair the failure would be approximately $500. the contact stated the dealer advised him to repaired the key failure he would probably have to replaced the ignition lock cylinder and remote. the vehicle had not been repaired. the failure mileage was 21,000 and the current mileage was 27,920. vwb

I currently own a 2006 chevrolet hhr. on 1-13-11, i had the interior door handle break off in my hand making it impossible to open the door from the inside of the car. this is a huge safety hazard while driving the car. upon further research on car forums online, i am not the only person that has had this problem.
11/25/201069000
I own a 2006 chevy hhr lt. thanksgiving day i went to move my car out of the driveway and when i tried to get out of the car the interior door handle on the driver door came off in my hand. i have done my research and found this is a common problem with this vehicle. i even walked up to another hhr i saw on a parking lot and it had the same problem. my safely concern is that i cannot open the door without rolling down my window and reaching outside the car to the exterior handle. if i was in an accident and had a electrical failure i could not exit the car because i could not roll down the window. everything i have found in my research is that chevrolet is not recgonizing this as a real problem and from what i have seen/read they have been unwilling to correct the problem when it occurs or help the vehicle owners in any way. i have checked on the repair and found that the door handle itself can not be replaced that you have to buy an entire door panel for over $400 and that is just the part, no labor. how can this be a known problem, and chevrolet not stand behind their product? the inability to exit my vehicle in the aftermath of an accident greatly concerns me and should concern chevrolet especially with the multiple complaints i have read online of this issue occurring.

My key continues to get stuck in the ignition.about 4 months ago this happened and i took my car back to the dealer, they charged me $50.00 to get the key out they say they greased the ignition i guess.i was looking through my car manual and it tells you how to get the key out of the ignition.i don't think the dealer charging me $50.00 was fair. is there some way that can be fixed?i can not afford $50.00 and i'm get tired of putting my finger in the hole under the steering wheel to release the key.

2006 chevrolet hhr interior door handle failures. in my instance the plastic handle that is used to open the door on the drivers side broke off. this is a widely complained about issue on the web. if you google hhr drivers side interior door handle broken you get 1000's of people discussing this issue. the cost to repair is very high and people are not doing it. chevy does not sell just the plastic part, they require you topurchase an entire assembly, the cost runs nearly $600 with labor for a plastic part. the issue is that dealerships do not stock this part, they need to order it and it takes time, this is a safety issue as the only way to exit the car is to open the door from the outside, so that requires rolling a window down and opening it from the outside. if you needed to exit the vehicle in a hurry, such as after an accident, you would not be able to do so. this is a great concern. besides the fact that this is being reported as a problem and chevy is not trying to rectify the situation, or to even provide the part outside of purchasing the entire assembly

Chevy hhr 2006 drivers side interior door handle broke off in hand during normal use. made of cheap plastic. auto maker states that the only way to repair is to completely remove the door and pay. all of this for a piece of plastic which should cost pennies to replace? i suffer from neck pain and have trouble rolling the window down to reach out and open the door. they have to fix this at their cost. this is obviously no fault of the owners and only due to faulty (plastic) equipment they are using.

2006 chevy hhr . the drivers side door interior door handle snapped off in my hand when i tried to open the door, smacking into my knuckle and almost causing my hand to fly back into my face. the door must now be opened by rolling down the electric wondow and opening from the outside handle. two dealers so far refuse to fix the issue, telling me they don't have parts.

If my battery dies i can not get in the car no matter what. my car is equipped with one lock on the driver side. because the battery is dead the car will not engage the actuator on the lock even with key entry. i have to call a locksmith to get in the car. if i accidently locked a baby in the car and the battery was not working i cannot get in the car. key, remote whatever. i have to call a locksmith. in my case the actuator stopped working. so regardless if i have a key or remote i cannot get in. if this actuator fails on the driverside i cannot get in, but my baby may bein the car

Key gets stuck / can not turn to off position and remove the key. if you can not remove the key within an hour, your battery will be depleted. there is an actuating rod in the shifter that pushes a micro switch that completes a circuit to pull a solenoid in the steering column to allow the ignition switch to be tuned to the off position (and remove the key) when in park. the plastic part in the shifter assembly breaks and allows the actuating rod to fall out. the fix for this is to replace the shifter assembly. $185 not including labor. the quick fix for this is there is a plastic plug on the under side of the steering column. inside you have to feel for the end of that solenoid and depress it to release the key. gm tsb #06-07-30-004f acknowledges the common occurrence of this failure from 2006 to 2010 hhr, cobalt, and pontiac g5 . although, if you are out of warranty, your dealer may be reluctant to fix this problem without cost. tires, ball joints, brakes, what have you, fail and are, no doubt, a common occurrence. if fact that is to be expected. but the shifter in an automatic? i would think that the shifter in an automatic should last the lifetime of the car. imo, they installed a poorly made part. to me, this is obvious since they are stating in that tsb, 2006 - 2010 shifter are expected to fall apart as mine did. i have a 1965 plymouth belvedere, the oldest car in my possession, that the shifter never needed to be repaired. in fact i've never had an automatic shifter problem with any car. it was stated in a forum that gm should have considered a metal collar or ring around the plastic bit that holds that pin to reinforce it and this problem would have never become a nuisance. also, when that pin falls out, the shift lever is free to move without pressing the shift button on the front of the shift lever, so it could accidentally be moved to another gear while driving, even reverse!! i guess that is not enough of a safety issue for gm to worry about. *tr

The key to my 2006 hhr would not come out of the ignition. as a result the automatic headlights would not go out and the vehicle could not be locked. this happened while i was traveling, which put my personal safety at risk and if i left my vehicle for any reason it could have easily been stolen. i have been online and found that several other owners have experienced this problem. *tr

Initially, i had intermittent problems with my 2006 chevy hhr. the key switch wouldn't turn all the way off to release the key. i took it to the dealership while it was under warranty, and they informed me that they couldn't make it do it (for which they have a record). after about a year-and-a half of this intermittent problem, my key would not come out of the ignition at all. i was out of town, staying at a hotel and had to leave the key in the ignition overnight. i read my owners manual and found the hidden release button in the steering column. i took it back to the dealership, and because i am out of warranty, i have to pay for this repair that is due to poor craftsmanship. after researching this to see if was recalled, i have uncovered numerous chevrolet hhr owners that have experienced the same problem, and it is a faulty shift linkage. this item needs to be on the recall list. *tr

2006 chevrolet hhr. consumer states several problems with vehicle *tgw the consumer stated his sons vehicle had a severe shimmy in the steering wheel and became progressively worse when the brake was applied. the pads and rotors were replaced twice and the third time the rotors were machined, but the problem continued. there was also a strange noise coming from the front suspension, but the dealer was unable to pinpoint the problem. at 42,000 miles the air condition made a loud screeching noise for 2 minutes, then stopped working. at 68,000 miles, a metal skid plate had fallen from underneath the vehicle. soon after, the exhaust was very loud. the vehicle was taken to the repair shop and the consumer was informed the catalytic converter had cracked. the vehicle lost power and a cylinder had to be replaced, the check engine light would come on and then go off, the temperature gauge did not work, so the air condition only worked if the check engine light was off. the door locks did not work, the radio worked intermittently, the sun visor would fall down at random times. there were times when the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated even with an alignment, new struts, shocks and good tires, the vehicle continually pulled to the right. *jb

I have had several issues with my hhr since purchased in september 2005. first incident was the lock on the hatch broke after only owning the car for a few months. next was with the brakes. at first i noticed a noise when i applied my brakes it sounded like something was loose. this nose would come and go. after a few months i started to notice a slight vibration in my steering wheel when braking a few days later that vibration turned to violent shaking and resistance when braking. i took it to the dealer who informed me the rotors were warped and needed to be repaired. this was roughly around 13000 mi. the dealer did repair the rotors under warranty and didn't give me the it's normal wear & tear mumbo. next is the check engine light keeps coming on. it will stay on for a few days and then go off. this has happened 3 times already and the dealer has replaced the sensor each time. now we are up to the 4th time as it came back on again yesterday. i have also had issues with the radio. the radio has had power to it and no volume. this happened 3-4 times b/4 i took it to the dealer who had to reset & reprogram something on the radio. *tr
