I bought my hhr in april 1006. the car had approximately 5,000 miles when i purchased the vehicle. that fall, in september 2006, the brakes began to shudder every time i applied them. i took the vehicle to my mechanic and he said the rotors needed to be ground and turned. he did this and the vehicle was fine until the next summer (2007) when it began to shudder again. i took the vehicle in and had the brakes checked. this time i had to have both the pads and the rotors replaced. in fall 2008, he vehicle began to shudder again. i took the car in and the rotors one again needed to be ground and turned and one shock was leaking. i stopped driving the car every day and alternately drove my pickup and the brakes lasted beyond the one year mark. however, in 2010, the brakes began to shudder again and i had to take the car in and have the rotors ground and turned again. it is now march 2012 and he brakes are bad again. i do not drive the car in the summer because the warm weather seems to make the problem worse. also, beecause of the brake issue, i have had to put two new sets of tires on the vehicle due to abnormal wear. i would like to add that i do not speed and do not brake quickly or ride the brakes.

2006 chevrolet hhr. consumer states several problems with vehicle *tgw the consumer stated his sons vehicle had a severe shimmy in the steering wheel and became progressively worse when the brake was applied. the pads and rotors were replaced twice and the third time the rotors were machined, but the problem continued. there was also a strange noise coming from the front suspension, but the dealer was unable to pinpoint the problem. at 42,000 miles the air condition made a loud screeching noise for 2 minutes, then stopped working. at 68,000 miles, a metal skid plate had fallen from underneath the vehicle. soon after, the exhaust was very loud. the vehicle was taken to the repair shop and the consumer was informed the catalytic converter had cracked. the vehicle lost power and a cylinder had to be replaced, the check engine light would come on and then go off, the temperature gauge did not work, so the air condition only worked if the check engine light was off. the door locks did not work, the radio worked intermittently, the sun visor would fall down at random times. there were times when the vehicle would not start. the consumer stated even with an alignment, new struts, shocks and good tires, the vehicle continually pulled to the right. *jb

I own a 2006 chevy hhr lt2, it has approx. 52k miles, and a rattle, vibration in the steering column has been occurring at speeds below 45mph. also, the driver side floor is continuing to flood with water, and the heater/ac blower has failed or shorted out. lastly, i have had the brake rotors worked on 4 times by chevy, and they are now once again in need of repair. i recently took my vehicle back to the dealer for the rattle in the steering and the water leak. i found numerous tsb articles for the issues, but the dealer and gm are claiming the tsbs do not exist. the repairs will total more than $1100. i was told the bushings, and tension rods are the problem with my steering, and they would need to be replaced. at 52k miles i find it hard to believe these items would fail.. my major concern is my safety related to the steering as well as any possible electrical issue stemming from the water leak.. i do not understand why gm has not issued a recall for the steering issue as well as for the brake rotors. if you go to any vehicle complaint web site for the hhr you will see 100's of postings related to bad brakes. there are also similar complaints pertaining to the steering. the dealership refused to honor or compromise with regards to performing the repairs for free or for a reduced fee. i contacted gm corporate and filed a complaint. i was told the gm district manager would contact me. i am still waiting. *tr

My 2006 hhr vibrates violently when the brakes are applied. i've had this problem checked numerous times from approximately 12000 miles on. i am currently at 55000. after inspections i was advised nothing was wrong with my brakes. i was told the materials used for the brakes heats so rapidly that it could cause it. i questioned about the materials used and it was explained to me that it was to keep the weight low on the vehicle for gas mileage. yesterday i was returning home from work which i have to travel a long grade. i shifted to a lower gear to reduce speed going down the grade, i pressed on the breaks and the vehicle shook so violently i ended up trying to use the emergency hand break in order to gain control of the vehicle. my speed was approximately 52 miles per hour. i have had numerous problems with this vehicle and have an extensive warranty repair record on it including a fire. i find this vehicle is extremely unsafe especially with the braking problems. *tr

I bought my hhr exactly one year ago. this is my first car so i have no general knowledge about vehicles. i bought the vehicle used with 31,000 miles on it. it currently has 58,000 miles on it so i am not covered for a warranty. at first i noticed a vibrating when exiting a highway or decelerating with my brakes. the steering shook violently. also when driving the steering wheel is hard to control and the car seems to veer severely to the right and with sheer force i have to use both hands to control it. recently that has increased dramatically, even at speeds of 30mph. i took the car to get the brakes inspected and they told me the brakes needed to be replaced and the rotors were warped and needed to be replaced, not resurfaced which others have said that is unusual since the vehicle is still fairly new. the mechanic also told me that my front struts are leaking and need to be replaced. i have also noticed that when i am driving the car tends to shake/vibrate and make strange noises. the key gets stuck in the ignition upon turning the engine off. there are times i have had to restart my car up to 8 times just to get the key out of the ignition. *tr

My brakes shimmied/ vibrated badly when my hhr had 14300 miles, ferris chevrolet dealership turned, ground, the rotors to repair the problem on 07/30/07 at the same time the heater/ac fan switch was repaired on 9/28/08 with 28365 miles on my hhr the same problem was repaired at the dealership, the brakes should not shimmy and need repairing every 14000 miles, this need to be corrected with new improved rotors before their is a total brake failure we plan on keeping this car for a long time, who is going to pay to fix this!at the same time the heater/ac fan switch was repaired and the fan motor was replaced, we were told water leaks on the fan, we have had water leak thru the heater vents before. *tr

Within the first 2,000 miles of delivery this car developed a shimmy in the front end of the car. this occurred when decelerating and coasting and when one applied the brake as well. there was also a hesitation in the car at the same time and this may have been related, but that problem eventually disappeared. i did have the tires rebalanced but this did not change the vibration problem and i took the car back to the dealer many times to try to determine the cause of this problem. every time the service area concentrated on brakes. they re-ground the rotors, replaced brake pads, calipers and sometimes this did improve the situation for perhaps 30 days but within a short period of time the same problem would redevelop. they complained that the tires should be rebalanced again...i did that at the dealership so the service people could not off-load the responsibility of the work. no help. at the most recent service replaced the brakes again, not out of concern for the repetitive problem, but just charged me the normal servicing as a wear item. when i got the car back, again, the shimmy problem was gone...almost. there is still evidence of a minor shimmy in the front end and this is how it always develops. i went back to the dealer and noted that we were taking the car on vacation but that i wanted to document the problem again in the event we had to have service in a remote location. the dealer again serviced the brakes and i left on vacation to san diego. the problem again appeared and we decided to not drive this car back cross-country and it remains in san diego and no use to me whatever. my spouse will not enter the car because she fears the front-end will collapse. i agree with her. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. at less than 25,000 miles, the brakes would occasionally roll when the brake pedal was depressed. the dealer stated that the rotors did not need to be replaced at that time, but advised the contact to keep an eye out. currently, the failure has worsened and the contact has scheduled an appointment to see the dealer. the instrument panel lights, which indicate how many miles the vehicle has or how much oil is remaining, illuminate on and off intermittently. occasionally, when the key is turned in the ignition, the engine turns over but the vehicle does not start. the current mileage was 30,000 and failure mileage was 22,000.

A loud clunking noise has been noticeable under the front of the car for 3 to 4 weeks previous. in route to billings, mt. we heard a thud and car became hard to steer, hit the brakes to slow down and stop. when stopped the right front wheel completely locked up. we discovered the rear blot on the brake caliper on the wheel had fallen out. we were able to pull of the road as there was no traffic, however once the car was stopped i could not go forward due to the brake caliper being locked into the right wheel. had the car towed to the gmc dealership in powell, wy where they replaced the bolt and repaired the car under warranty. *tr

I have had several issues with my hhr since purchased in september 2005. first incident was the lock on the hatch broke after only owning the car for a few months. next was with the brakes. at first i noticed a noise when i applied my brakes it sounded like something was loose. this nose would come and go. after a few months i started to notice a slight vibration in my steering wheel when braking a few days later that vibration turned to violent shaking and resistance when braking. i took it to the dealer who informed me the rotors were warped and needed to be repaired. this was roughly around 13000 mi. the dealer did repair the rotors under warranty and didn't give me the it's normal wear & tear mumbo. next is the check engine light keeps coming on. it will stay on for a few days and then go off. this has happened 3 times already and the dealer has replaced the sensor each time. now we are up to the 4th time as it came back on again yesterday. i have also had issues with the radio. the radio has had power to it and no volume. this happened 3-4 times b/4 i took it to the dealer who had to reset & reprogram something on the radio. *tr

2006 hhr lt. history of abs/brake/front end component failures and electronic malfunctions since purchase in winter of 2005. when applying brakes steering wheel shook hard from l to r and brakes grabbed/released. dealer found rotors warped at less than 10k miles. warranty repair/resurface. problems continued: abs engaged on dry pavement under 10 mph but would not engage at road speeds with brakes heavily applied. at same time, pedal went to floor. ase certified gm mechanics told me this was impossible - until service manager test drove and concluded pedal goes to floor; car is unsafe to drive. claim opened/resolved with gm. dealer found defective wheel hub assembly (left) that caused abs failure below 8k miles. (no accident) next failure occurred in the right wheel hub assembly and an accident resulted. gm and the dealer claim no defect but only error code is right front abs failure with prior 7 pages history of abs/brake/electronic problems (submitted to ins company and gm and in possession of the dealer). this failure resulted in an accident with substantial damage to the wheels/rims/undercarriage of the vehicle. gm and the dealer concluded - without bench testing the right wheel hub assembly - that there was no defect; however, the only error code recorded is an abs failure (claim opened with gm). gm and dealer have called to see how the vehicle is doing - i declined to commit saying that i would be making a determination as to the vehicle's performance shortly. good thing - the steering wheel shakes from left to right on application of the brakes and the brakes pulse as if the wheels are no longer round (grab and release). these are the same symptoms that occurred when the rotors when out of spec. it is my suspicion that the rotors have again gone out of spec and that the abs/braking component failures are continuing with this vehicle. i am about to take the car to an independent mechanic for evaluation. *jb

2006 hhr 2lt with 5000+ miles had near miss when brakes failed while traveling at about 45 mph, i attempted to gently brake for a truck turning 6-7 cars ahead of me. i heard a loud grinding noise that reminded me of plastic gear teeth turning the wrong direction. my pedal would not depress and the car would not even slow. reflexively, i pumped the brake to see if the abs had just locked up. the brake pedal felt like it was locked in the up position. luckily i had been about 6-7 car lengths behind and by the time i got up in his rear, my brake pedal released a little (still with resistance) and i was able to slow enough not to hit him as he turned. i had to avoid him by veering to the left to drive around him. the brake seemed to release several seconds later after completely removing my foot from the pedal and coasting. my auto dealer said they took it for a drive and it was braking fine. i

In february 2007 i was in an automobile accident while i was driving a 2006 chevrolet hhr. i was driving on interstate 95 southbound near wilmington, delaware. someone entering the highway from and on ramp pulled directly in front of me while i was driving. when i hit the brakes on the hhr, the car pulled sharply to the right. the more i braked, the more the car pulled to the right. i lost control of the car and i ended up driving across two lane perpendicular to the traffic and i hit a van head on. no one was injured but my hhr was totaled. i feel that the brakes on the hhr were defective and the way they pulled to one side instead of stopping straight caused me to crash. i reported this to chevrolet after the crash but nothing was done as far a a recall or anything. in fact, i read about a similar problem when the 2006 hhr was received on edmonds.com. the author of the review expressed that he thought that the hhr's braking was dangerous. *tr

We have a chevy hhr '06. had it for about a year and the car started to shake when i put on the brakes. my wife then brought it to the dealership and they said the rotors were warped...instead of putting new rotors on they resurfaced the existing ones...probably cheaper to warranty. we'll, 2-3 months later the car is shaking again and now the car is out of warranty. this is a well documented problem for this make&model. gm needs to have an immediate recall for the 2006 chevy hhr so they can fix the rotor problem. me and my family would feel safer on the road. *tr

I've had chronic problems with the front brakes, rotors, alignment and tires on the front end of my 06 chevy hhr. the vehicle began shaking violently when the brakes are applied. i took the vehicle back to the dealership at 2000 miles and 12000 miles and each time they had to turn the rotors and it seemed to temporarily resolve the problem. now i'm at 29000 miles, the problem has started again. the dealership says the rotors and front brake pads have to be replaced. i've owned many new vehicles in my life since my father is retired from general motors, and i've never ever had to replace the brakes or have the rotors turned for that matter. the dealership has tried telling me that the problem is a result of my driving habits and failure to service the calipers. i've had the car in the dealership repeatedly for this and other chronic problems and they've never mention that the calipers need any servicing. additionally, i'm 40 years old and the car is driven about 3/4 of a mile back and forth to work and not much more. to make matters worse, since my last tire rotation the left front tire has become almost completely bald. this is bizarre because i've been vigilant about rotating my tires every 6000 miles as recommended. the dealership has agreed to replace the rotors at their cost, but this problem needs to be covered and repaired 100% at gms expense. it's a result of poor design. they need to admit that there is a huge problem and pay for the necessary repairs. *jb

Steering wheel shakes left & right when stopping speed 40 miles per hour and up. the 1st time the hhr was in for this problem was 3 months ago 15,550 miles. dealer said they could not find any thing that it could be the road as i was driving on. took it in again at 17,500 this time it was the rotors where warped. dealer machined the rotors. *jb

Steering wheel and front end shaking violently when braking. brought into dealership @ approx 27,000mi and told rotors needed to be resurfaced because they were warped. manager said they were warped due to driving habits, brakes getting wet-then used, and/or hard stops. this has never been the case with any other vehicle i've driven for a comparable amount of time. *tr

Driving home from out of state, applied brakes and steering wheel shuddered violently, with reduced braking ability. took to dealer, diagnosed warped rotors. the same problem had occurred three months earlier, at 20,000 miles. vehicle now has 24,000 miles. rotors were resurfaced both times. *jb

*jb

Tl*- the contact stated that the 2006 chevrolet hhr lt was having braking system problems. this started in january 2007 with the brake light and low brake fluid light turning on. the contact called the dealership, and was told to bring the vehicle, they replaced the master cylinder, and they repaired the wire harness that shorted out. the contact stated that the dealership informed him that the wire harness failed because of a mistake made by the service mechanic, and that was why it had to be repaired. the contact stated that he got the vehicle back and drove it for a week, then the red brake light turned on and a yellow light came on for the abs. the contact took the vehicle back to the dealership on 02/07/07,and they still had the vehicle. the contact was informed by the dealership that they thought itwas due to the weather, but were not sure what was causing this to happen. the current mileage was 4100 and the failure mileage was 3700.*ak
