The car would lose power steering after accelerating past 5 or 10 mph. initially you could turn the ignition off and back on and it would have power steering for a period and then go off again. power steering flashed on the dash display. after a few weeks the problem continued and could no longer be remedied by turning the car off and on again. our regular repair shop stated the dealer would have to fix it when we had them doing some routine maintenance. the dealer cost being an unknown we just decided to live without power steering going on a year or so now. we finally bit the bullet and brought it in - bad motor according to the dealership with repair cost $379. after seeing so many people posting on the web with the same problem it's clear the model should be recalled. i have a complaint in to general motors at this time and they are seeing if they can help. it would be great if they would, i don't think we should have to pay for this. we will buy a new vehicle to replace this one probably within 12 months. reluctant to buy american made again - we have had much better luck with multiple toyotas. hope people continue to post complaints - that's the only way recalls and corporate accountability can happen.

The same as with the cobolt that had been recalled for repair service. only with the hhr, there has been no recall for the same exact problem!! i had to take my car to dealership garage and pay for scan diagnostics and also for power steering motor...due to this exact same problem that was recalled for the cobolt! i feel that gm needs to level the playing field and have the same recall for all their makes that have this issue. could be result of fatalities due to sudden loss of power steering which could depend on location this decides to happen. not happy with being treated differently just because i don't have a cobolt instead i drive a hhr with the same part and problem that they will cover for cobolt owners!!!

The first incident happened when i was pulling my vehicle out of my drive way, i was in reverse and put the car in park and began driving, afew seconds later, i heard a warning chime and a message came up on my dash saying power steering. the car was very hard to maneuver, i stopped the car and turned it off. i needed to get it back into my drive way so i turned the car on to go back home, once i turned the car back on the steering had gone back to normal. i assumed it had only been a glitch but didn't drive my car that day once i got it back home. i drove my car for about a week when the same thing happened again, i heard a chime and my dash displayed power steering, i was on a busy road and had no choice but to pull over, once i did i turned the car off then back on, the steering once again went back to normal. the next day i was on the highway going approximately 70-80 mph when the car once again displayed power steering on the dash and it became very hard to operate the steering wheel, i stopped the car and left it at a rest area along the highway because i was too afraid it would happen again before i could get off the high way and safely back home and had to have a friend drive it back to my home. i have not been able to drive my car in about 2 weeks because instead of it happening every few days, i now cant make it a mile out of my subdivision without it happening. im afraid it will cause me to have an accident in the vehicle. i've spoken to general motors, which they have told me that it is only my vehicle that is having the problem, which is not true, on any given search engine you can type chevy hhr steering problems and see pages upon pages of people who have had this problem and have even been in accidents because of it. the cobalt was recalled because of the same problem. the issue should be fixed by gm because it's a very common issue with hhr's. *tr

While driving, my wife said the power steering light came on and power steering went out. i was impossible for her to turn which nearly caused a head on collision. this is an un-safe steering motor used in this automobile and needs to be recalled asap before somebody gets killed! this has happened to me as well and has happened on at least a dozen different dates. *tr

I have had quit a few of incidents with my vehicle. i bought it used. the steering wheel locks up and when it does that the dash display says power steering. i don't know if its a recall or not but i feel like it needs to be. a local towing company owner is a close friend and he has recently towed on a hhr that flipped because the steering wheel locked and the lady got scared and over corrected and flipped. i believe it needs to be labeled as a recall.

I was driving at the freeway when the power steering cut out and made move the steering wheel so hard the i stop the car starter again and was ok later it did it several times in my way home. *tr

Originally the power steering stopped working randomly when driving but now it stops working after 30 seconds or so every time car is started and failure alert is displayed. also while driving the power door locks unlocked, the gauges stopped working, the car hard shifted down, and it also started to display it was running at least 20 degrees hotter than normal. this has happened twice but seems fine later. *tr

This is an ongoing safety problem that chevy/gm doesn't care to worry about. my cars steering wheel shakes when i am driving. sometimes to the point of the car to be uncontrollable in addition to this the traction control light goes on along with the engine light. i have brought this in to the dealer every two months and have been told a combination of what the dealers mechanics feel the problem is. i have had steering columns replaced, cam shaft solenoids, bushings, rotors. the list goes on. nothing has fixed the issue. today bringing back to the dealer i am now told that i am lucky to be alive as both control arms in the front are seconds from breaking along with the links that keep the car stable.. the mechanic shared that had i hit a pothole i would have died as the car would have spun out of control and impossible to recover as i would have no way to control the steering wheel. now having two kids, and this being an ongoing problem one would think that chevy/gm would pay for the replacement of their faulty part. i cant afford a new car, and i can no longer afford to pay for gm's mistakes. my car is paid off and now i don't feel safe driving it. to fix it and i say this loosely it will cost 1,800 out of my pocket. *tr

Starting back in august, now pretty much every time we drive the car, the power steering goes out. it makes it very difficult to turn the wheel, seemingly harder than if we had no power steering at all. while driving straight this is not really a safety issue, but if the power steering were out and we needed to avoid an accident, it would be nearly impossible. you used to be able to turn the car off, wait 30 seconds-1 minute, and turn the car back on, and it would be fine the rest of the trip. now, you can turn it off/back on, but the power steering goes out again in just a few minutes. from what i have seen online, there was a recall on the chevy cobalt (which has the same steering setup) and in canada. *tr

I was traveling down tyrone blvd. in saint petersburg florida...as i approached the intersection of tyrone and 9th attempting a left hand turn, the power steering indicator light came on. the power steering failed and i came with in inches of hitting a power pole. this not only could have caused injury to me but to others as i had to stop suddenly aborting the turn. when i finally made it home...10 miles away...i went on the internet only to find many similar and just as disturbing incidents on this matter. one i find extremely disturbing is that in canada, this situation has been recalled, but in the us, the cobalt has been recalled but not the hhr. the power steering modules are exactly the same....part numbers everything....so i guess what i want to know is , why hasn't this problem been addressed in concern to the hhr? shame on gmc as they are well aware of the problem. is it going to take someone getting killed? this problem need to be resolved.....yesterday. *tr

My wife had a cobalt and the power steering was going out. eventually there was a recall. my hhr is doing the exact same thing now.the power steering goes out and it lists power steering across the dash. i took it to the mechanic and they stated it will have to be fixed at the dealer. gm has yet to issue a recall on the hhr's but many consumers have experienced the same issues. i hope by filing this complaint i can be part of the solution to get gm to issue this pending recall. *tr

My son was driving my car on the parkway at about 55 mph. he said there was a beeping sound, the driver information center showed power steering. at that time he noticed he had no power steering. he drove off the exit and pulled into a gas station. he shut off the engine, waited a few minutes and restarted the car. he then had power steering again. he related the incident to me and told me that although the power steering was out he could still steer the car. i was on long island after a death in the family and could not have it checked out right away. a few days later i was driving the car and the same thing happened to me. i am a sixty year old woman and not as strong as my son. i was able to turn the corner and then pull over to the side of the road where i turned the car off waited a few minutes and restarted the car and drove to my destination, which was about a mile. i spoke to my husband who works for a chevrolet dealer, who then spoke to the mechanic who takes care of my car. he looked it up and found a tsb on this problem. a few days later i drove my mom to a store which was about 15 or 20 miles away. we were just about there when the steering went out again. i was able to drive into the parking lot, but parking was very difficult. i also had to drive the car 20 miles back to my moms house. we were told that this is not a safety issue, but i disagree. it may not be hard for a man to steer the vehicle with no power steering, but from a womans point of view, it is a safety issue. i understand there is a recall on this vehicle in canada and on cobalts and pontiac g4s and g6s in the usa. the car was fixed today, but because i was away from my usual mechanic(at the dealership where my husband works), it cost me almost $400.00 to have it fixed. please take this into consideration when deciding what is a safety issue. *tr

Just turning into driveway and power steering went out. warning light came on and chimed. could barely turn the steering wheel. glad it did not happen on highway with grandkids in car earlier in week while driving cross-country doing up to 75 mph. scary enough with little control on my own property because i about missed the driveway and hit curb! researching this problem am keenly aware that this is common among hhr owners. why no recall? if i had known about this i would have never put my family at risk in this vehicle by driving cross country on vacations. steering, brakes and excessive acceleration mechanical issues are paramount to safety on the roadways! *tr

I was driving on interstate 195 in nj & highspeed & power steering went out & whole dic instruments went haywire car started bucking & almost lost control of vehicle & went into other lane with on coming tractor trailer there. i pulled over & shut car off waited 5 mins & all was fine,i thoughtstrange so i continued & it did same thing 2 days later going 45 mph. dealer cant solve it but its happening to lots of hhr on hhr forums. there all complaining about electronic power steering motor is bad & cost is over $500 to repair, however the pontiac & chevy cobalt which have same frame & parts as hhr are all being recalled but nothing about the hhr??? how is this possible when the cobalt & hhr are same car but different body & made by gm. i know & see alot of older folks drive these hhr & i'm 6' 250 lbs & was able to handle this to safety but these older folks wont be so lucky. its extremely dangerous to drive when the power steering goes out when your doing 70 on an interstate with everyone doing same speed & sometimes faster. something must be done from gm to correct this problem when 100-1000 are experiencing same problem & that the cobalt has been recalled but not the hhr & its the same exact car. i hope it gets resolved before someone gets killed or badly injured, concerned hhr owner. *tr

During the cold months of the year, spring i have no problem with the steering. during the hotter months of the year my power steering notification on my dash board comes up and i have no power steering. i have to turn the car off to reset the steering motor. regardless of how fast i drive the indicator comes on and i have to turn the car off numbers of times to reset the steering motor. it's becoming more and more frequent, i bought the car used and would like to get the electric steering motor replaced. i understand that there are recalls pending on this vehicle in canada as well as chevy cobalts in the u.s. have the same problem. the cobalts are getting fixed at no charge to the customer, but the hhr has not been included in the recall for a defective part. i strongly believe this a serious safety issue. *tr

I was driving in our local zoo parking lot. with people crossing and my power steering went out. a message came up on the console saying power steering. i stopped the car and shut it off checked the fuse. i t was not blown started the car and it worked again. i then drove for a few days with no issue. it has now happened 5 times at all speed ranges from 0 miles an hour up to 65 mph. it dose not require any turning of the steering wheel. the chevy cobalt was recalled for the same issue and there are a lot of complaints about this on forums. *tr

While attempting to park, the power steering suddenly went out again; this time causing me to back into a small pole. now i have a gaping hole in my bumper. this is ridiculous. now i see they may have issued a recall for this exact issue with this vehicle, but in canada (however, i've yet to find that notice). also, they constantly having issues with steering on other chevy/gm vehicles. something needs to be done, before someone really gets hurt. previous post: for the past few months now i've had continuous problems with my power steering. while driving my info panel will beep and read power steering, then the power steering goes out. if i turn off the ignition then restart the car, everything works fine for a few moments (sometimes longer) then it happens again. i see that there was recall issued for this exact reason for the chevy cobalt (which has the same power steering motor as the hhr), but no recall has been issued for the hhr. i see there are alot of complaints about this. any assistance would be great! *tr

The vehicle's power steering system stopped working abruptly while the vehicle was in motion. the vehicle was occupied by a mother and two small children at the time. the steering system can only be reset by turning the vehicle off and then back on. it has happened numerous times since the initial incident. today, july 23, 2012, the steering system abruptly stopped working eight times in approximately a twenty minute time span. this is a serious safety problem that apparently gm is aware of. they have noted it in vehicles that use the identical steering system, yet have failed to address the issue on the hhr. *tr

I was driving along and my power steering failed, as i was rounding a curve on a major highway. i was traveling between 55 and 60 miles per hour. as i was rounding a curve, my power steering failed, causing me to nearly lose control of the vehicle. gm is very aware that they built hhr's with defective power steering motors. if you start a google search for it hhr p, it will fill in the suggestions with hhr power steering motor/issues/failure/etc. there are forums full of people who have had to pay to replace their ps motors, but should not have. we should not have to pay to replace a major safety component on our vehicles that general motors knows in fact is bad. the reason i know that gm is aware that there is a problem, is because they've recalled nearly every other car equipped with the same electric power steering set up. my mother received a recall notification on her malibu. as did another lady i know that has a malibu, someone i know with a g6 got the letter, and 2 cobalt/g5 owners i know, also received recall letters. so gm is very very very aware that they have built potentially unsafe vehicles that could cause injury, but they do not care!!! after contacting them, their cs rep from india or philippines told me that gm is not aware of the problem, and i would have to pay to have it diagnosed, pay for the repairs, and that gm 'might' help me with the cost. sorry, but i don't have 400 dollars to pay someone to diagnose a known issue and replace the part that they know is bad!!! i found the part on gmpartsdirect.com, ordered and replaced it myself. sitting at nearly 140k (about double the miles i had when i replaced it) and still turning fine. noticed that the new ps motor's gm part number was different. also indicating, they knew there was a problem, redesigned the part, thus it having a new part number. stop letting gm get away with this crime!!! *tr

As i was driving home on i-40, i lost power steering, the power steering light came on, and the steering was extremely hard to control, and turning was almost impossible to maneuver safely. the exit ramp was especially bad. making it especially unsafe was i had my young grandchildren with me. i find it hard to believe there isn't a recall on this issue, as i am finding hundreds of similar complaints on the 2006 hhr power steering that are very similar, this made driving very hazardous, almost impossible, until it could be repaired.

I am a 35 year old mother of 3 and i recently had a dangerous close call while driving my 2006 chevy hhr. i was driving with my children on board and i suddenly lost power steering. i quickly managed to control my vehicle but it was a close call. i took my vehicle to my nearest chevy dealer for inspection. i was told what was the exact problem with the steering column and the estimated cost of repair would be $1600.00. i went home and quickly researched into the problem. i found out that i was not the only owner of a chevy hhr to have this similiar problem. i found out also that the chevy cobalt (which also has the same steering column) has a recall on it but not the chevy hhr. it is only logical that the chevy hhr should have a recall also because the steering column is identical. public safety should be the number one concern.

While driving on i-55 the power steering went out and made the car almost lunge into a gaurd rail. the problem persisted intermittently making the vehicle dangerous to handle at slow speeds. research on this issue turned up massive reports of the power steering motor failing. this has resulted in a recall in canada on the hhrs. in the us the chevrolet cobalt had the same issue and was recalled. the hhr and cobalt use the same power steering motor. please help before someone is seriously hurt or killed by this obvious defect.

I was driving my vehicle on the 401 on ramp (going 35km/hr) it was a rainy day. i randomly and all of a sudden lost power, including my power steering. no lights, no warnings, just gone. i couldn't turn the wheel to continue with the curved on ramp. i'm not that strong and without power steering i couldn't do it as well. as i wasn't able to do much i hit the break after i was already mid air from hitting the curb and going straight. i landed perpendicular on the 401. taking up all of lane 1 and part of lane 2. lucky traffic stopped before hitting my car. this was terrifying. no warning but no power and wack goodbye power steering.

While driving, the dashboard signaled power steering and the car immediately lost all power steering making turning very difficult. after turning the engine off and on again, power steering resumed. the problem didn't return again for about 150+ miles. each time it happened, the cure was to turn off the engine and restart. however, the time between recurrences became shorter and the owners manual's only information said to 'return to the dealer'. i did this and the system was replaced for several hundred dollars (i don't have the bill handy right now). from what i have found on this nhtsa site, the steering failure is a known deficiency and a frequent complaint of hhr owners. chevy needs to be forced to make repairs and restitution - this is a serious safety issue - when the steering fails, it immediately makes turning dangerous!

I was coming home from work in heavy traffice and making a left hand turn when the power steering light came on and the vehicle suddenly was very hard to turn. i entered into another lane before i could get it back in mine. i stopped on the freeway and turned off my vehicle. a young man stopped and asked me what the problem was and i told him it terrified me, but that while turning my power steering went out. i had lost my power steering. he said my power steering was electrical and to try and turn the car back on to reset the power steering. i did, and the power steering was fine. made it home. however, have had about 10 more instances of the power steering going out while at a stop light, while turning, and while driving on a straight freeway. it is in the chevrolet dealer as of today. $1,307.00 to fix. they checked my vin # and said i dont qualify for any recalls. this is so dangerous. gm should recall these, and or pay us for this problem we have had to get fixed.

When driving vehicle approximately 20mph, chime sounds, dash displays power steering message and power steering is gone. has happened twice and when going around corner nearly crash twice now due to sudden loss of power steering. i bought this car new 1/2/06 and it only has a tad over 40,000 miles so warranty has expired. vehicle has same power steering pump as cobalt for which a recall was done. same exact part means problem should not just be limited to the cobalt and g5. this is a safety issue and cobalt & g5 were recalled but not the hhr. i belong to a very large hhr community and this is a common problem and needs to be addressed before someone is seriously injured or killed. i live in colorado and had this happened when roads were icy it could have created a serious issue. please let me know what can be done to correct this as the other vehicles the same year as mine with the same part have been recalled. it's an obvious defect and out of concern for the safety of the driver of the vehicle and the others around them when the problem occurs, the cost to repair should rest on chevrolet and not the owner of the vehicle. i am a single elderly woman struggling to make ends meet and cannot afford to pay for a repair, nor should i have to because of a known faulty part. thank you for your assistance.

As i was driving on the interstate i heard a double chime and looked at my console and noticed the power steering warning had come on. at that time i noticed steering had become very stiff. after shutting the vehicle off and restarting it i found it to be working fine again, no warning lights, no issues turning the wheel. approximately 20 miles later, coming off the interstate, the same warning returned and power was immediately lost in steering. upon leaving work to take the car to the dealership, two hours later, the car was running as it did prior to the power loss. this is a safety concern. if i had not been a straight away both times i could have had caused an accident or been in an accident myself. this is unacceptable. i have had my vehicle for more than five years and have had nearly no problems with it until recently. i am an active duty member and am concerned about the safety of those around me who drive this make and model of a vehicle and have the same problems.

The key will not come out of the ignition at times. i take the vehicle out of drive and put it in park several times and do the same with the brakes before the key will come out. my mechanic has said that it is a brake issue and not the transmission.

I have a 2006 chevy hhr with 44,000 miles. while driving the power steering light came on the dash, then the power steering went out, almost causing me to loose control of the car in a curve. i am a 65 year old female, i do not have the strength in my arms to maneuver a vehicle that looses power steering unexpectedly. i made it home and did a search on the internet for a recall, i found where gm recalled 1.3 million cobalts with the same electric motor as the hhr, however, there is no recall for the hhr. gm is well aware of the problem. hhr owners are all over the internet complaining about this power steering problem. i am told that it could cost over $2000.00 to fix this problem.i am a senior citizen with a limited income, i can't afford to pay to have the car fixed or to purchase a new vehicle. i read on the internet that several people have already been hurt due to this defect. this is a very serious safety problem that needs to be addresses by gm and fixed as soon as possible, before someone is seriously injured or killed. sincerely, amelia harris

When pulling out of a parking space the power steering warning flashed on my dashboard and the steering became very hard. after stopping the car and turning off the engine and checking under the hood i found i was unable to locate the power steering system. upon restarting the car the light went off and the steering was fine. after several days the light came back on and the same problem steering occurred. this happened while on the highway. i researched online how to resolve and this became a recurring issue in forums that people had with the power steering system constantly turning off and needing to be reset. this problem has since sped up in occurrence since then.

Car suddenly loses power steering. shutting off the car allows the power steering to reset and work again but it loses the power steering again at random times. most of the time it only works for 30 seconds, sometimes the entire trip in the car, and other times it cuts off in the middle of a trip. especially dangerous when it shuts off in the middle of a turn. cobalts and pontiac g5 have had similar problems resulting in a recall. same steering components?

The electric power steering has failed intermittently over the past months since july 4, 2011. the first incident was on july 4, 2011 when the power steering failed on a family trip almost causing an accident at 65 mph. there have been up to a dozen instances since with the latest being on oct 2, 2011 causing my wife to run off the interstate into the median. gm claims there is no recall, however there are recalls for the same exact electric power steering motors for the cobalts from gm. the hhr's need to be a part of this recall as the motor is the same exact one as the cobalt. please recall these also before someone gets hurt or worse. the internet sites are filled with complaints on this issue.

Gm has recalled the cobalt and other cars built between 2005 and 2010 with a power steering problem. the power steering in my hhr is built on the same platform with the same parts . but gm did not include the hhr . they did sent a letter to 2006 hhr canadian owners to fix the problem . why not in the us? the power steering stops operating and the steering becomes very hard. you have to stop and turn the car off to reset the steering. then it happens again with no warning. there are a lot of hhr's with this problem . very unsafe. again, they will fix the cars in canada but not in the usa ? they are the exact same cars.

I was driving and just when i was on a curved street my car let me know that there was a problem with the power steering. i needed to act fast to avoid an accident due to the fact that i was on a curved street. i never had problem with this electric system until that day. after this, i have been driving my car for one week. the car still doing the same every day, but the main problem is that it happens randomly, so you can;t predict when you will start having a power steering problem. once you turn of the car and turn it on again system works well for a while. again, you will never know when it will start having the problem. hopefully i will go to check the system and fixed as soon as possible. i'm not sure if there is any replacement for this part in which i can be confident that it will never happen again.

The car has several safety issues. the main concern is that both of the front doors had the handles break off. you cannot open the doors from the inside. you must roll down the window and open from the outside. if the vehicle were involved in an accident or caught on fire and there was no power to the vehicle you are literally trapped inside. i have brought this to the attention of chevrolet but they have failed to do anything.i feel like the vehicle is a rolling death trap. the other concern is that the power steering went out on the vehicle. chevrolet does not make it a recall yet you can be driving along and all of a sudden your power steering goes out. the part is the same as the chevrolet cobalt and chevrolet did a recall on that vehicle for the very same power steering part.

I have a 2006 chevy hhr. every since the weather has been getting warmer my car has been loosing it's power steering function. this will happen at anytime of the day and at any place. i can be at a complete stop or driving on the highway and will lose all steering capabilities. this seems to be the same problem that was found in the 2005 - 2010 chevy cobalts. if i pull over and turn the car off then turn it back on it helps for a while until it does it again. this has been going on for about a month now, today is march 21st 2011. when the steering goes out the odometer will say power steering and there will be a chime that goes off. my mechanic has not been able to figure out what is wrong with the car since it never does it when i leave the car with him.

 1. i was turning into a parking spot when my 2006 chevy hhr had the power steering come on the console and then the steering became very hard. 2. after shutting car off for a bit, it fixed the problem, but was back 20 miles down the road. 3. i have investigated that while this is a problem for the hhr, it is not included with the gm cars recalls. i guess they don't care about the hhr drivers. please let me know if there is anything i can do.... i don't feel i should have fix this safety issue.

General motors has recalled all models with known power steering issues except the hhr, they're aware the electric power steering is suseptable to failure, which makes the vehicle less safe to operate. this issue has been recalled in canada. do they want to run all their customers off? if gm doesn't fix or reimburse me for this, it will be my last gm product. it is ridiculous to treat customers this way. they know there are bad parts out there and refuse to make right on it.

Dealer states cannot duplicate problems: no power steering not fixed by replacing fuse (eps system), although gm recalled many vehicles with same problem and are aware of issue, no recall has been issued. windows squeal up & down on sunny day, & get stuck shut. windshield wipers came off of windshield wiper transmission. front end sway bars replaced, continued problem, tires wearing uneven, feels like bad bearings, unable to dup. rear windshield wiper fluid poors into interior of car. front left turn signal went then rear turn signal. interior was sold as scotch guarded/repellent of liquids interior is far from guarded against anything water stains fabric. electric pwer mirrors no longer work. brought car in for srrvoce, recall on front head air bags nvr disclosed to me nvr offered to repair.

The power steering in my 2006 chevy hhr randomly stops working. the dash light says power steering when this happens. this happens two or three times a week on average. this problem has occurred twice while turning almost causing me to crash into retaining walls on the highway on ramps. this seems to be a common problem with the hhr. a temporary fix for this issue is to turn the car off and then back on. the problem will return at random times. chevrolet recalled cobalt's that had the same problem. i can not understand why chevrolet won't issue a recall on this very serious safety problem.

The vehicle is a 2006 chevy hhr with approximately 46000 miles. the electric power steering goes out as i am driving and it is very difficult to steer. when this happens during a turn it is very dangerous, and i have almost run into other vehicles. after restarting it usually works, but is subject to going out again at any moment without warning. i contacted chevrolet, but they denied knowledge of the problem although the cobalt has the same electric steering and a recall has been issued. having researched on the internet, i have seen numerous other complaints, and i see no reason for chevy to wait until a serious accident occurs to recall these vehicles.

Power steering goes out whille driving down the road.if you stop turn off ignition then restart it will work again for a period of time then go out again. i called my dealer about the problem and they said it is common but there are no recalls. they stated that they would have to replace the whole steering collum. i would have to pay for it.but keep my reciept to be reinbursed if there is a recall .is anything being done about this problem? i watched a program last night were this is happening not just to the hhr but also the colbalt, and pt crusier. why is the hhr not included in the recalls?they showed on the show that people are dieing from this. one mother lost 2 daughters.my dealer says they know there is a problem but wont do anything about it.what can i do?

The power steering fails while the vehicle is in motion. when the vehicle is first powered on, power steering is present. it is unpredictable when the power steering will fail. in two incidents it almost caused accidents when failing. i do not have a large frame nor a lot of upper body strength that is able to make turns at low speeds, such as when turning or parking. if i am aware of the power steering failure i can compensate for it, but if it happens suddenly, it can be quite surprising. this is the same exact problem with the same exact component as the chevy cobalt and the pontiac g5, and i understand other vehicles are reporting this as well.
10/11/201080000
My electronic power steering doesn't work. my hhr is equipped with the same power steering assembly found in the cobalt which has a recall issued. seems stupid to me that a lighter car would benefit from the recall, while i am now going to be stuck with a large repair bill. these units are from the same supplier.......recall all of these units on whatever vehicle the oem put them on.

2006 chevy hhr lt, while driving at a posted speed of 45mph, daughter lost power steering sending her into the curb almost hitting another car then into the curb again. she was terrified by this incident. my husband went to pick her up and he drove the vehicle back to our house, and while on the highway at 65mph, again the power steering failed, and he almost crashed into the wall but was able to bring the vehicle to a stop within inches of crashing. the power steering light has now come on several times, and the steering has gone out while driving three times thus far. in addition the gear shift has become a problem again where it locks, and i have already had this replaced 3 times, each time lasting about a year before the problem reoccurs. i have read that several other 2006 models have been experiencing the same power steering problem, several of them resulting in accidents. are they waiting for someone to be killed before expanding the recall to include the steering on the 2006 chevy hhr?

Turned on the ignition and the dashboard gauges all went out. pulled the fuse and reinserted it - problem corrected. t/c indicator on instrument panel came on and the transmission was upshifting hard. again, i removed and reinstalled the fuses and the problem went away. power steering warning was displayed on the dash and the power steering was disabled. i removed and reinstalled the fuse associated with the power steering and the problem went away. i did notice that most of the fuses were mildly oxidized on one leg of each fuse.

While driving on the the highway at 65-70 mph my power steering shut off. the dash board dinged 3 times, got a message about the power steering and the needles on the mph and rpms were all over the place. the shifter is on the floor and will make a clicking noise like it's trying to find a gear or something. that happened on 7/31/10 and has happened 4 times since. this situation can happen at speeds. car will also buck/jerk hard when trying to accelerate when this happens. i have given up driving the car as its not safe. i haven't gotten it fixed yet since i would like to see this problem recalled.

2006 chev hhr power steering failure. lost power steering in a sharp curve. immediate and with no advanced warning. forced to shoulder and almost into a ditch. the warning message and chime worked but that doesn't help you control the vehicle!! fortunately i was driving this time. if my wife had been driving there is no way with her limited strength that we would have made it around the curve. i understand from the internet that this is a recurring problem for hhrs and chey cobalts. they both use the same faulty power steering motor. chey has issued a recall onthe cobalts. why not the hhr?

My car, chevrolet hhr ls 2006, lost power steering more than 10 times as of december of 2009. i had my car repaired at chevy dealer 4 times already for same problem. each time they fixed the problem, but it came back again and again, and recently it happened more often. i leased this brand new car in 2006. at the end of 3 years leasing, i bought it in 2009. i took good care of it all the time. the power steering failure first happened in dec. of 2009. when i was driving on the road, suddenly it was hard to make a turn, and my car was thrown forward each time when i got oil to move forward. the message power steering popped up on the display panel. i had my car towed to chevy dealer because the driving wheel could not be moved at all after restarted the car;however, when my car was at chevy dealer, the problem disappeared and they could not find other problem. then 2 months later, it happened again and disappeared after half day. after this repeated 3 or 4 times, my car was towed the 2nd time to chevy dealer on feb.26, 2010 because the driving wheel could not turned. this time they found something and fixed it. in the following 3 months, this problem was happened and gone at least 3 times. we were scared and did not dare to drive far from home. on may 24, 2010, my husband got same problem with engine light on and he drove to chevy dealer immediately. they fixed it. only one week later, on june 2nd, the car was towed the 3rd time to the chevy dealer for same problem. they replaced the steering column and steering module. my husband picked it up the next day, but just after 2 miles driving, same problem occurred, so he had to drive back to the dealer right away. they fixed it and drove 50 miles to test it and it was good. yesterday i drove it home and it was good too. but this morning, same problem happened again. since it is saturday, the chevy store does not open. we can not go anywhere, even grocery stores. this really is a disaster, we are so scared!

2006 chevrolet hhr - under normal operating conditions, while driving at low speeds (15 - 25 mph) and turning to the right, car will chime, power steering appears on the control panel and the power steering will go out making vehicle very hard to drive. once car is shut off and restarted, power steering begins working again. took vehicle to local mechanic, was told that the electronic steering control unit and entire steering column needed to be replaced. cost would be $1,355. taking it to chevy dealer today for second opinion. purchased car used in 2008 with 27,000 miles on it. currently has 77,000 miles. happens approximately 4 times per week for the past month.

I was driving my 2006 hhr that has electronic power steering (eps) which failed for no apparent reason on 4-18-2010. there were no events leading up to this other than i was just going about 1mile from work to home. there were no crashes or injuries as a result. on looking into the problem i found that gm has a recall on other vehicles that has the identical electronic power steering but the hhr is not one of them on the recall list.. i did find the 60amp fuse blown that protects this system from overload conditions. there were no hard turns against the wheel stops either right or left. the fuse just blew. i replaced the fuse just today 4-19-2010 and thus far the system seems to be operating normally. as to why the fuse blew in the first place well that's the million dollar question! *tr

Power steering motor failure. this happens under normal driving with no warning what so ever. it does not matter if you are on the freeway or around town, it has happened during both. the vehicle does flash power steering on the information center. this is the fourth time this has happened in the past 6 weeks and i am concerned about replacing due to having the same problem with the replacement part. my wife is the primary driver of the vehicle and has stated that it is very hard to control. today she was driving home when the failure occurred. she was almost home and the steering began to work properly while she was in the middle of a right hand curve. she had ample amount of pressure on the steering wheel at that time to keep the car in the road (at a reduced and safe speed) and then suddenly she had power steering again. she ran into the ditch but no damage was done that i can find. both her and my children use this car daily and with its current problem, i don't feel it's safe drive or sale.

To whom it may concern, i recently had repair work done on my wife's 2006 hhr lt2. the problem we were having was that she would randomly lose power steering with a warning chime and a notification on the instrument panel. this would be temporarily resolved by restarting the vehicle. i wasted little time and had it tested at classic chevrolet in sugar land,tx. they soon discovered that the power steering motor was faulty. i had them replace it. now i've been a lifelong gm customer and i was very disappointed with this expense, not only was it a failure unassociated to neglect but it was also a very dangerous problem. this problem is also highly documented on the web by many other hhr owners. after gm announced the recall of 1.3mil vehicles with this problem. the hhr was not listed yet but the chevy cobalt and pontiac g5 were. the hhr shares the same power steering motor as the cobalt and g5. gm part # 20763801. jtekt north america is the producer of this motor. from what i discovered on the internet, gm has filed a lawsuit against jtekt in response to this issue. it is still unclear to me how gm has not included this model in there recall. i have recently been denied reimbursement by chevrolet for my expenses.

I bought my car brand new and sometimes without warning the engine light comes on and you only have a few seconds to pull over before it shuts down. sometimes the light comes on when i'm stopped at a red light and the whole car starts shaking as if you popped the clutch too fast, except this car is an automatic. i have found through trail and error if i start messing with the computer buttons on the steering wheel that changes the information that is displayed on the dash board it will sometimes reset itself and act okay. other times i have to let it sit for over 20 minutes before it will start up again. there is no set time this occurs, sometimes it happens a few times a day and other times it will go a month without happening. it shuts down at various speeds. sometimes i'm going 65 miles and hour and other times i'm going 20 mph. i have brought the car back to the dealer but they told me they can't fix it until they reenact the problem. each time they have had the car they could not reenact the problem, yet they said they can see there is a problem when they read the computer. i paid $20,000 for this car and am scared to drive it. i can't drive on the highway for fear it will shut down again. i have to take the back roads to get around. *tr

I own a 2006 chevy hhr lt2, it has approx. 52k miles, and a rattle, vibration in the steering column has been occurring at speeds below 45mph. also, the driver side floor is continuing to flood with water, and the heater/ac blower has failed or shorted out. lastly, i have had the brake rotors worked on 4 times by chevy, and they are now once again in need of repair. i recently took my vehicle back to the dealer for the rattle in the steering and the water leak. i found numerous tsb articles for the issues, but the dealer and gm are claiming the tsbs do not exist. the repairs will total more than $1100. i was told the bushings, and tension rods are the problem with my steering, and they would need to be replaced. at 52k miles i find it hard to believe these items would fail.. my major concern is my safety related to the steering as well as any possible electrical issue stemming from the water leak.. i do not understand why gm has not issued a recall for the steering issue as well as for the brake rotors. if you go to any vehicle complaint web site for the hhr you will see 100's of postings related to bad brakes. there are also similar complaints pertaining to the steering. the dealership refused to honor or compromise with regards to performing the repairs for free or for a reduced fee. i contacted gm corporate and filed a complaint. i was told the gm district manager would contact me. i am still waiting. *tr

Purchased the car july 13 of this year. a clunking sound comes from the drivers side when hitting holes or on slightly rough road. tends to occur more when the car or the weather is cold. took it to chevrolet and they diagnosed it as a sway bar link issue. i replaced the rotors, sway bar links (pair), drivers side strut mount and balanced & rotated tires. problem still exists. appears that the steering column (intermediary?) has been a problem for other hhr owners according to online forums and research also points to the same issue in older oldsmobiles. *tr

We have several defects. after normal braking a couple of times the car and steering wheel begins to shake and shimmy. the more you use the brakes after this starts the more violent the shimmy becomes until we have to stop and let the brakes cool down. the dealership replaced the rotors once but could offer no explanation. we continue to be plagued by this problem but now my extended warranty does not cover brakes and no one knows or owns up to what the problem is. the other issue we have is the exhaust, specifically the header pipe attached to the catalytic converter which cracked at the flex joint. this started back when we first experienced the brake problems, we complained to the service writer that there was a funny smell after driving it for a while, he looked at it when it was up on the rack and said there wasn't anything wrong, as it turned out the smell continued getting worse with time until the exhaust noise became loud enough to identify and the fumes were making us nauseous and giving us headaches. the moon roof started to fall apart so now we are unable to use that, the radio makes a loud popping noise , loud enough to hurt your ears, this was also waved off by the dealership as nothing. to date nothing has been done about these issues. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 75 mph on normal road conditions, the traction control switch activated. suddenly, the traction control disengaged without assistance. there was no response when the accelerator pedal was depressed. the vehicle began to idle excessively and surged unexpectedly. immediately, the vehicle was driven to an authorized dealer for inspection, but they could not duplicate the failure. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer on three separate occasions for identical failures. the repairs consisted of installing a data recorder and replacing the bcm. in addition, the steering column and gear shifter were replaced. the vehicle was not being driven due to the safety risk involved. the failure mileage was 13,456 and current mileage was 15,500.
02/23/2009430001
2006 chevy hhr continues to have power steering go out during operation. this could be very dangerous under certain conditions. after reading several blogs, it appears that the cause is a defect in the eps (electrical power steering). it employs the body control module (bcm), power steering control module (pscm), torque module and various other systems. the system becomes corrupted and causes intermittent power steering failure. as stated above, if the system fails during certain driving conditions, (i.e. driving in curving, mountainous terrain) and system fails, this could cause very difficult steering and a traffic crash. *tr

I bought my hhr exactly one year ago. this is my first car so i have no general knowledge about vehicles. i bought the vehicle used with 31,000 miles on it. it currently has 58,000 miles on it so i am not covered for a warranty. at first i noticed a vibrating when exiting a highway or decelerating with my brakes. the steering shook violently. also when driving the steering wheel is hard to control and the car seems to veer severely to the right and with sheer force i have to use both hands to control it. recently that has increased dramatically, even at speeds of 30mph. i took the car to get the brakes inspected and they told me the brakes needed to be replaced and the rotors were warped and needed to be replaced, not resurfaced which others have said that is unusual since the vehicle is still fairly new. the mechanic also told me that my front struts are leaking and need to be replaced. i have also noticed that when i am driving the car tends to shake/vibrate and make strange noises. the key gets stuck in the ignition upon turning the engine off. there are times i have had to restart my car up to 8 times just to get the key out of the ignition. *tr

I bought the 2006 hhr in march 2007, in july i had the stabilizer links replaced, then in december i had to have the steering column replaced, in october 2008 i needed to have the struts replaced & now a week later i have to have the strut mounts replaced. not only that, i had a leak from the heater case that leaked into my passenger side, i had the radio replaced & also my front & back bumper is loose which the dealer told me on the phone that is probably clips that have broken off. i was told because i live in michigan, that the struts went bad sooner than anticipated. also, although i had a car fax report on this car, this car has been in an accident that no one knew about. i am not very pleased with this car & its a shame to make a car payment on a car that i don't even like anymore due to the problems. i was told they would give me $9000.0 as trade in, but i had 13000 on it, so how do you get out of a car that you think should be recalled? i have been checking into the lemon law & i understand as long as you purchase the used car with the factory warranty still active, it's covered under the lemon law. but since the dealer wont do anything about it, i doubt gm will. i was told to wait till after the election, for the economy to get better, that doesn't mean they will reasonably get me out from under this junk of a car! *tr

2006 chevy hhr - when car is turned off, key gets stuck in ignition and cannot be removed. after moving the shifter in and out of gear, key will eventually come out. this happens intermittently, but has happened 4 times over the last week, so it appears to be a worsening condition. based on comments on owner websites, this is something that is not uncommon among hhrs (hhrclub.org, answerbag.com, fixya.com, chevyhhr.net). have printed off a part number from one of the sites and am taking to the dealer tomorrow. *tr
