The driver side door interior handle broke at approx 36,400 miles. luckily the handle was replaced under warranty. the whole driver's side door panel had to be replaced. at approximately another 36,000 miles the door handle broke again. we looked online, and there is a company that makes just the door handle to replace. we ordered a replacement handle. they said that they sell about 50-60 handles a week. there are several videos on youtube on how to replace the handle, and many companies online selling just the handle of the hhr. we have never had a interior door handle break within 3 years of owning a car, and to break a second time in another 3 years, and it appears to be a consistent problem with the design of the vehicle according to website groups, forums etc. this is a major safety concern. if the driver interior door handle fails and the driver needs to get out of the car in an emergency quickly, it's not possible. over the years of owning several different cars for many years, i have never had an interior door handle break. *tr

Water intrusion when raining leaks on electrical components like blower motor , wiring, insulation, and floor of passenger side ..once the water corrodes the electrical components they stop working... gm corp has this problem for over 20 years on several models and makes.. very bad design..they will not recall .. this can be serious safety issue .. if the electrical defrost motor will not work .. then you cannot see out the windshield.. crash can ensue.. they need to change the water evacuation system from below the windshield...see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnykjlhusxi this is about others who have had this problem with many gm models... *tr

We bought this car in 2011. in the first year of having our hhr, the inside door handles on the driver and passenger sides are broken. the driver side broke first and about 4 months later the passenger side broke. the rear hatch door latch went out about 6 months after buying this car. the lot where we bought it says al of the fixes are our problem. but, they add up to, to much money for us to fix. i have been researching these problems. there are way to many hhr's with the same problem not to have recalls on. why has there not been any as of yet? these problems are safety issues. they should be recalling the parts and replacing them. *tr

I have a chevy hhr and the rear bumper support is rusting at only 52+ miles. water is laying on the steel support and there is nothing that stops this water from collecting and rusting the support away. my car hasn't even been through it's first tuneup yet and i haven't owned the vehicle 1 year yet. i have brought the complaint to gmac customer care center and my local chevy dealership. the dealer wanted me to pay $112.00 for them just to inspect the rusting rear bumper support. the defect was found by philip a representative from hayes collision center in sacramento, ca 916-482-7819 a contracted collision center for the same dealer that wants to charge me the money to inspect the problem. mike daugherty chevrolet in sacramento, ca 916-482-1600. hayes collision center was contacted by a representative from gmac customer care center raphael ext 41461 @ 1866-790-5700 and my gmac customer care and gmac inquired if the rusting support was it due to the mileage or the year of the vehicle. philip at hayes collision center told gmac that the rusting rear bumper support is a manufacturing defect and should be addressed and corrected. hayes was wondering why the part wasn't made out of high grade aluminum instead of steel because water is getting up under the bumper cover and laying on the steel bumper support which is damaging a major safety item. stopping a rear collision impact from harming the passengers. the rust is like cancer and will not stop until the support is completely rusted through. weather or just a simple car wash can cause water to get on this steel part and cause further rusting. there hasn't been any resolution to this major issue from either mike daugherty chevrolet or gmac customer care center. *tr

I have a 2006 hhr that we bought in july of 2006. i have noticed in issue of water getting in the car from somewhere under the dashboard, and it is causing the floorboards to get wet every time it rains. i first noticed the issue in august of 2009 and it happened once and didn't think anything of it. the problem has become more of a nuisance since. i called my insurance company and they told me that since there is nothing wrong with the windshield that my glass coverage wouldn't cover it, and that i need to bring it in to my local chevrolet dealer and have them diagnose the problem which is going to most likely cost me an arm and a leg to fix since my warranty is no longer valid. i would like to see chevy actually honor the product that they produce and finally come to their senses and fix the issues or i will have to start buying a different brand, because i don't think that a car that only has 41,176 miles that is about three years old should not have soggy carpets and a mold and mildew issues. sincerely one unhappy customer. *tr

The interior handles on the driver and passenger door of my 2006 chevy hhr are broke. i was in the car when it happened, between errands both times. calls/emails made to gm have not been productive. it is a safety issue, i can not exit the vehicle other then rolling down the window and opening from the outside. if something were to happen, i would not be able to get out in an emergency situation. one broke one week, and the passenger broke a week later. the part that is connected to the door mechanism is smaller then a dime and made of poor quality plastic molding. it is the only thing supporting the door mechanism. when emailing gm, i continued to get the run around for days until i threatened to report them to this site. i am choosing to anyhow because i do not feel they have taken proper steps to ensure this is repaired. they did connect me to a dealer, graff chevrolet in grand prairie. they have been extremely helpful and are doing their best to get this taken care of. i would expect gm to have better service, especially with the company in the state it is in! *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact has experienced several failures with the vehicle ever since it was purchased. when exiting the vehicle on the passenger side, the door handle cracked in half and caused the contact to become trapped in the vehicle. she had to exit the vehicle using the driver's side door. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician stated that the door handle failure was a common issue. no repairs were made. in addition, when activating the air conditioner or heating unit, a small amount of air comes out of the vents. the contact could not turn down the heat or air because the dials to control the air and heat do not turn and are permanently set to high. she is unable to adjust the settings. the vehicle was taken to the dealer and it was determined that the a/c unit and the switch to adjust the a/c and heating unit needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred two months later. no additional repairs have been made. the manufacturer advised her to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection. the vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they refused to inspect the vehicle because they did not receive a call from the manufacturer to inspect or make repairs to the vehicle. the failure mileage was 34,083 and current mileage was 75,000. updated 2/5/09 *cn updated 02/10/09. *jb

I bought the 2006 hhr in march 2007, in july i had the stabilizer links replaced, then in december i had to have the steering column replaced, in october 2008 i needed to have the struts replaced & now a week later i have to have the strut mounts replaced. not only that, i had a leak from the heater case that leaked into my passenger side, i had the radio replaced & also my front & back bumper is loose which the dealer told me on the phone that is probably clips that have broken off. i was told because i live in michigan, that the struts went bad sooner than anticipated. also, although i had a car fax report on this car, this car has been in an accident that no one knew about. i am not very pleased with this car & its a shame to make a car payment on a car that i don't even like anymore due to the problems. i was told they would give me $9000.0 as trade in, but i had 13000 on it, so how do you get out of a car that you think should be recalled? i have been checking into the lemon law & i understand as long as you purchase the used car with the factory warranty still active, it's covered under the lemon law. but since the dealer wont do anything about it, i doubt gm will. i was told to wait till after the election, for the economy to get better, that doesn't mean they will reasonably get me out from under this junk of a car! *tr

My 2006 chevrolet hhr is getting sandblasted on the rear rocker panels over the course of normal driving down paved roads. the car is equipped with protective plastic guards which are taking all the abuse. i was told by the dealer this is what the guards were for. finally they took pictures and decided to repaint them and install mudflaps at their cost. now the paint is still getting sandblasted again and the paint is peeling off. after complaining yet again i was told by the gm business resource center that i should have purchased the runningboards at the time i purchased the vehicle if i wanted to prevent this from happening. how was i to foresee this problem? they refused to install them at their cost which i believe they should have. they are saying that i am picking up 'road debris and that's the problem. i only drive on paved roads so this is a ridiculous and false statement. finally today they called and agreed to pay for 50% of the runningboards and the installation of them. i do not have the money to compensate them for an obvious design flaw. there is no reason that this should in any way be my responsibility. *tr

After getting home one day i went to open the drivers side door and the part of the door handle that attached to the wire that works to open the door broke. the door will no longer open from the inside. i must roll down my window and reach outside to use the outer handle. i was told that the cost to repair the handle is $400, this seems to be because entire door frame need to be replaced. apparently this is not an isolated issue, and i personally find that something as important and as necessary as the means to get out of the car could be so poorly constructed.

I am the second owner of a 2006 chevy hhr. current mileage is approximately 45500. three weeks ago ( 8/14/'11)the inside driver's side front door handle broke. when i went to repair the broken handle, i was advised that it is an integral part of the door panel, and would cost over $400.00 to replace. i am not in a position to replace such an expensive item; i can live with rolling the window down and opening the door from the outside. not only is this inconvenient, but it is a safety hazard due to a design flaw. if i need to exit the vehicle in a hurry, i cannot do so.

The car has several safety issues. the main concern is that both of the front doors had the handles break off. you cannot open the doors from the inside. you must roll down the window and open from the outside. if the vehicle were involved in an accident or caught on fire and there was no power to the vehicle you are literally trapped inside. i have brought this to the attention of chevrolet but they have failed to do anything.i feel like the vehicle is a rolling death trap. the other concern is that the power steering went out on the vehicle. chevrolet does not make it a recall yet you can be driving along and all of a sudden your power steering goes out. the part is the same as the chevrolet cobalt and chevrolet did a recall on that vehicle for the very same power steering part.

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. while parked the contact attempted to open the front drivers side door and the door handle fractured off of the vehicle from the interior. the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the entire door panel was replaced because the parts for the door handle were not sold separately. approximately 18 months later the failure recurred. the vehicle was not taken to be repaired. the failure mileage was 35,000 and the current mileage was 95,000. the vin was unavailable. sm.

I own a 2006 chevy hhr lt2, it has approx. 52k miles, and a rattle, vibration in the steering column has been occurring at speeds below 45mph. also, the driver side floor is continuing to flood with water, and the heater/ac blower has failed or shorted out. lastly, i have had the brake rotors worked on 4 times by chevy, and they are now once again in need of repair. i recently took my vehicle back to the dealer for the rattle in the steering and the water leak. i found numerous tsb articles for the issues, but the dealer and gm are claiming the tsbs do not exist. the repairs will total more than $1100. i was told the bushings, and tension rods are the problem with my steering, and they would need to be replaced. at 52k miles i find it hard to believe these items would fail.. my major concern is my safety related to the steering as well as any possible electrical issue stemming from the water leak.. i do not understand why gm has not issued a recall for the steering issue as well as for the brake rotors. if you go to any vehicle complaint web site for the hhr you will see 100's of postings related to bad brakes. there are also similar complaints pertaining to the steering. the dealership refused to honor or compromise with regards to performing the repairs for free or for a reduced fee. i contacted gm corporate and filed a complaint. i was told the gm district manager would contact me. i am still waiting. *tr

We have several defects. after normal braking a couple of times the car and steering wheel begins to shake and shimmy. the more you use the brakes after this starts the more violent the shimmy becomes until we have to stop and let the brakes cool down. the dealership replaced the rotors once but could offer no explanation. we continue to be plagued by this problem but now my extended warranty does not cover brakes and no one knows or owns up to what the problem is. the other issue we have is the exhaust, specifically the header pipe attached to the catalytic converter which cracked at the flex joint. this started back when we first experienced the brake problems, we complained to the service writer that there was a funny smell after driving it for a while, he looked at it when it was up on the rack and said there wasn't anything wrong, as it turned out the smell continued getting worse with time until the exhaust noise became loud enough to identify and the fumes were making us nauseous and giving us headaches. the moon roof started to fall apart so now we are unable to use that, the radio makes a loud popping noise , loud enough to hurt your ears, this was also waved off by the dealership as nothing. to date nothing has been done about these issues. *tr

I parked my car and went to open the door, the door handle broke off in my hand. because i was so shocked by this happening it took me a few minutes to realize i could roll down the window and open the door from the outside. if this happened to someone during/after an accident it could have serious consequences.

*tr

Yesterday when i got home i discovered that i could not get out of my driver's door from the inside. the inside handle broke, so i rolled down the window and used the outside handle to open the door. today i tried to get a new door handle only to find out that you have to purchase the whole door panel ($269.71 with my trade discount). this is a crazy way to repair a cheap plastic door handle. i have searched the internet only to learn that this is a problem to many other hhr vehicles. i believe this should be a recall with a better design included for this door handle. the last recall i got was for a glove box catch problem, which was a piece of molded plastic with tape to hold it on. the driver's side door problem is a much more dangerous problem. *tr

Last night, it was a bit windy here in new york city. the weather report said that the wind was about 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph. well, i had made a few stops on my way home from work, but when i got home, i opened the door, and as is started to open, the wind pulled the door out of my hand, and things happened so fast ... i heard a bang, and the door flew open ... i'd say ... almost 180 degrees, which sounds impossible. the door then came back and stayed open about 16 to 18 inches. i could not close the door. i pulled and pulled, and it closed. now, it only opens 16 to 18 inches, and i have to squeeze out. the car has damage to the left front quarter panel and the door. and, i don't know how badly the internal parts of the door are. the quarter panel is sticking out about 4 inches, and the door is rubbing against it very hard, which is why i can only open the door a little bit. i'm not an expert on assessing damage, but i did call my insurance company this evening to file a claim. (my guess is that i'm looking at almost $2,000 in damage ... but i'll post an update when i get the 'estimate'). i told the insurance company that the door hinges must have been defective, or loose, or something. and when you look at the car, its just one of those things that you have to see it, to believe it. it is obvious that i didn't hit anything, and nothing hit me. when you see it, all you'll be able to say is how could that have happened? has anybody had anything remotely similar to this? i want to know if the vehicle is poorly constructed, or if the door hinges are inferior, weak, bad, loose, or whatever! *jb

Chevrolet hhr's have a tsb on the rear liftgate not opening. it is faulty and many complaints i have found via google. if a child or animal is trapped in the rear they cannot get out, there is no pull lever to open the liftgate. they would have to climb over the seats to get out during a potential fire. *tr

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 chevrolet hhr. the contact stated that when it rained, water got into the vehicle behind the glove compartment. the passenger side floorboard would become completely wet when the water got in. the contact was concerned about the development of mold and fungus if the problem was not addressed. the contact called the dealership and was told that the frame behind the glove compartment had a faulty seal which allowed the water to get in. the vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. the current and failure mileages were approximately 18,300-bk
