I was driving the automobile at about 65 miles an hour when a dashboard light came on saying power steering. at this time it became hard to steer.i pulled over in the breakdown lane, switched the ignition off and switched it back on. this corrected the problem for a short time, now it's a daily random problem.
03/08/2013125000
I was going into a left hand curve and all of a sudden the power steering went out and the dash started dinging the power steering warning light.

The power steering is not functioning. it just stopped working, noticed it while pulling out of the garage. gm has done recalls an similar if not the same problem just in different models coblat and g5 or g6.

Driving down the highway at approx 60mph when the steering indicator light came on and i lost power steering. incident was on 6 lane freeway in morning traffic, not the best time to loose steering. after doing extensive research, this is an ongoing unacknowledged problem. gm does not reconize this as a malfunction, although the dealers i have spoken to, since this happened this morning, are well aware of the problem.

While traveling on highway in washington dc and going around a curve, the power steering failed, causing my car to veer into the next lane before i could force it back. i was lucky it was very early so there was no car in the other lane. after doing research online, i have found many people complaining about the same issue with the hhr. it also sounds like the same issue as the cobalt, g5 and saturn, which have had recalls/special extended coverage. this was very frightening and this could easily cause a major accident. i was very lucky. *tr

At any speed and at random times my power steering will go out. i have had to pull over and shut the car off 10 times in 30 miles to reset the power steering motor to get home safely. there is a recall for chevorlet cobalt and malibu for the same issue. upon research on the internet there are multiple people that are having the same issue. when gm was contacted i found out that my power steering motor that cuts out is the same part number as the one in the cars under recall for the same issue. this has made me almost lose control going around turns and i feel that it is a hazard to anyone that drives the hhr's with the same power steering motor. thank you for your time. *tr

Well just before inspection time, which should be now. the power steering light has come off and on. more on than off. steering becomes manual steering and hard to handle. this should be a recall on the part. for someone that's not as strong this may cause serious injury or wreck, during handling of the vehicle. especially during turning and changing lanes. if this has not been recalled yet i bet i know why. chevy and gm motors are afraid of losing money on repairs and parts. humans that drive the vehicle type should be put on priority. my wife was very afraid when it went out on her while driving on a major freeway. she had to pull over and get her wits back in order to drive back home. im not paying no 450.00 us dollars for repair, i know how to fix it and can get a cheaper part. but if my wife would have had a wreck because of the power steering motor going out, there would of been a definite law suit. please recall the part. human beings safety comes first and foremost. *tr

Driving home from work on evening i heard a bing and a warning message came on in my dash reading power steering and i immediately lost the power steering assist on my car entirely making it very difficult to maneuver. i was barely able to get off the road i was on and safely into a parking lot. if i had been traveling at higher speeds or in the middle of a turn when this failure occurred it would have almost certainly ended in a crash. the power steering motor (the same part recalled on 2007 chevy cobalts, which share a power train and chassis with the hhr) failed and had to be replaced at only just over 40,000 on a well maintained vehicle. i would suggest further inquiry into whether the recall on this part has been comprehensive enough and should perhaps include other makes and models such as the hhr. i have been in contact with gm regarding this safety issue and have received little to no help. *tr

I was driving in heavy traffic on a major city street in fort myers florida trying to make a right hand turn when all at once my power steering went out on my car. it was so hard to steer the car but i was able to get my car semi off the street. the power steering light lite up on my dash panel. i turn the car off and went for help. a gentleman was kind enough to stop look at my car and could not find where the power steering was. he then got in my car and restarted my car and it was working just fine. he advised me to take my car to auto zone and have it checked out as they would hook it up to their equipment and fined the problem. once at auto zone they told me it was a recall problem and to take it to a chevy dealer to get it fixed. it cost me $278.00 and was told by the service department that it was not on a recall notice but that it was a problem with the hhr's. they advised me to contact gm and see if they would take care of the cost. guess what i was told it was not under warranty or a recall problem and it was on me. after reading about all the problems reports on this with the power steering it scares me to think it could go out again as i have read that some have had it to happen more than one time to them. *tr

Power steering failure started in early 2012 and increased in frequency and duration until repair on 7/26/2012. initiallly coad chevrolet dealer of cape girardeau, mo, said it would be covered by recall, and on the their invoice #547639 it is printed customer requests a factory recall be performed, or viss print shows this unit to be open for a particular campaign. special policy #10413 pwr steering in dic. no power steering at times. along with perform recall as per bulletin; inspect/replace as needed, but then they added replace power steering motor as per estimate and charged $281.59. their explanation was that vin really was not covered, but gm might cover and reimburse for the repair if we contacted them directly. gm customer service was contacted many times starting on 8/17/12 or earlier and on 9/19/12 stated they would not cover repair. in canada this failure was idendified and covered for this model year and others. i want gm to reimburse me for the obvious and dangerous defect that they are aware of and are selectively covering. i have the invoice containing the above information.

While on a highway entrance ramp my wife lost power steering almost hit the guard rail. after restarting the car the power steering returned, but a few days later it happened again. over the last three months it has reached the point it's happening multiple times a day, this will become a major problem in the winter. contacted a dealer and was told this the same power steering system that was recalled on the 2007 cobalt's ,but not the hhr. the cost to fix this problem that g.m. knows about is more then i can afford right but why should owners of this vehicle have to pay to fix a defect in a manufacturers product. please have them fix this before someone is hurt or killed ! *tr

The hhr has electric power steering. the steering assist fails and makes the car almost impossible to steer. this is an interment problem. shutting the car off and restarting will reset the fault and allow the steering to have power assist again. it seems gm has recalled all cars with that steering system except the hhr. this is so dangerous because you never know when you are going to loose assist. i can happen in a turn and you will not be able to steer through the turn. someone is going to die due to this issue it is very dangerous. called my local gm dealer and was told i'm on the hook for the expense to repair this issue. canada did recall this make and model for this issue. how is it a safety problem in canada but not in the us? *tr

I was operating my vehicle at highway speed when my power steering failed. i heard an indicator sound and then 'power steering' appeared in my driver information center/odometer area. at this time, the vehicle became extremely difficult to steer because the power steering had failed. i slowed to a complete stop, turned the vehicle off, and restarted it. the power steering began to function again. approximately 5-10 minutes, the power steering failed again while i was at highway speed right before a large curve. i was unable to stop and turn the vehicle off and had to steer with great difficulty to a location where i could turn the vehicle off. this has occurred 3 times in the past 2 weeks. i am no longer operating the vehicle and have it schedule for maintenance. i believe, if the vehicle were to be operated at higher speeds and this occurred it could be dangerous because the vehicle is extremely difficult to operate and their is no warning that a malfunction is about to occur. *tr

I had just left work and had just entered the freeway driving 55 mph when i heard a chime followed by a warning message on my dashboard that read power steering. it wasn't until i began to turn through an overpass when i realized that the power steering had completly failed. i had to turn to the right and hold the turn using a strong pull of the steering wheel. this was the first time that it went out. i called the dealer to see if there was a recall. they said no. i checked the internet and found that the chevy cobalt which was built on the same platform uses the same part and that vehicle was recalled for the power steering motor. my wife refuses to drive this car. she can barely turn the wheel at a dead stop. in an emergency situation, it will be almost impossible to turn the wheel left then right to avoid an accident. *tr

My wife nearly lost control of the vehicle while driving the hhr on the sawmill parkway during a rain event. the power steering stopped working. the curvy nature of the road and the posted speed made it extremely difficult for her to control the vehicle. the hhr is built on the same platform as the chevy cobalt and has the same steering system. it is my understanding that the cobalt has a recall for the same issue. it does not make any sense that the same issue being identified by countless hhr users on the internet would not be included. the results could have easily been tragic. *tr

While idling, the power steering light came on and when i moved forward there was no power steering, i reached a destination and cut the car off. the power steering came back on when i restarted the car some time later. it worked okay for a day or so then began to go off and on while driving. now it is more off than on. the chevy hhr has the same power train as the chevy cobalt which is under recall. i contacted a dealer this morning who said there is not a recall at this time for the hhr. *tr

While i was driving in rush hour traffic during a turn onto a 4 lane divided highway a power steering message came on and the alarm sounded and discovered my power steering was gone. i had to pull extremely hard to the left to complete the turn. i then pulled over to check it out and turned off the car and sat there for a minute and restarted the car and it was okay. this has happened over the last 6 days several times but always in the afternoon, not the morning. i went into the place i get my car worked on for routine service and they hooked to the computer and said it had something to do with a faulty electronic switch and would have to be taken to the dealer. this is an extreme safety issue.

Tl* the contact owns a 2007 chevrolet hhr. while driving approximately 40 mph, there was a complete loss of power steering and a chime sounded inside of the vehicle with an illumination of the power steering warning indicator. the failure occurred intermittently. the vehicle was maneuvered to the side of the road and the engine was turned off. the contact resumed normally after the engine was restarted. the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. the manufacturer was notified of the problem. the approximate failure mileage was 41,000.

When driving down highway at 55 m.p.h going around a curve, all of a sudden the electric power steering went out on my 2007 chevrolet hhr, after research on the internet, i have found that this seems to be a pretty widespread issue. it will now only work intermittently and cuts out especially in warm weather.

05/03/2012
My 2007 chevy hhr has developed a sudden issue with the power steering showing on the driver's display after a couple of ding sounds. when this occurs, the car immediately loses all power steering. there is no warning whatsoever, it is incredibly terifying, especially if you are driving at highway speeds as i was. on the first occurance on may 3, the light came on, i pulled off the highway into a gas station and allowed the car to rest for nearly half an hour. i then restarted the car, and the issue did not occur again. then today, the incident happened again, and again at highway speeds. i pulled onto the side of the road, turned the car off for a couple of minutes, then back on. the car had the warning light and lose of power steering happen 5 times tonight.

The power steering on my 2007 chevrolet hhr consistently goes out, every time i drive. i have to turn my car off then restart it, to get the power steering to kick back in, but then it usually just goes out anout 5 mins later. i've been waiting for chevrolet to issue a recall like they did for the cobalt, but nothing has happened so far. i've seen in various online forums that other hhr owners are having the same problem. it's extremely infuriating!!!

While coming to a stop to make either a right hand or left hand turn, i had the power steering stop working, and a power steering message illuminate on my dashboard message center. this happened 4 separate times within a 3 hour period, while using my vehicle to make deliveries for a local company. in each instance, i was able to put vehicle in park, shut off the engine, wait a couple of seconds, restart the engine, and the power steering would work for a short time. gm has reduced price on the defective part in the us, but, still no recall on the problem in the us.

Two days ago, while driving 25 mph in my parents' residential development, i received a power steering alert on my information bar and immediately lost control of my steering. i was in the process of making a left turn and luckily there was no one else on the street at the time or i surely would have hit them rather than just driving onto the curb before coming to a stop. it was extremely hard to turn the steering wheel in any either direction. i was able to regain control only after turning the ignition off and restarting. after the visit with my parents, the power steering went out three times in a twelve mile drive home. in two days this has now happened six times without rhyme or reason at varying speeds and at different lengths of drive time. i first discovered the problem on friday night and immediately began to research the problem on the internet. i discovered that the chevy cobalt and chevy hhr from years 2006-2010 share the same steering motor (not a pump with fluid) and they are a known problem. apparently there has been a recall for the cobalt but not the hhr? there was talk of a recall in canada for the hhr but not in the usa? i don't understand why when this is a very serious safety concern. i contacted my dealership early on saturday morning. i told him what was happening and he said that the serial number on my particular vehicle was not eligible for part replacement coverage. how are some covered and not others? i cannot drive the car without fear of again losing control in the middle of a turn, but this time causing a serious accident. this needs to be investigated immediately. *tr

My 2007 hhr has had multiple incidents in the last 3 weeks with the power steering light illuminating and then loss of power steering instantly. almost missed making a turn off the road because steering is non responsive. once you turn off the engine and restart the car, power steering is restored; unfortunately, this issue is occuring more frequently. internet research show numerous complaints with this exact issue, chevrolet has recalled other vehicles that use the same part and the 2007 hhr has been recalled in canada. why hasn't that happened here? is it going to take a death and subsequent lawsuit for them to step up and fix this known problem? i am calling my extended warranty service today and see if this is covered. repairs unfortunately can't wait for chevrolet to do the right thing!

At low speed while turning the steering pops. clunks and catches. this also happens after stopping with the wheels turned. when the turn has been completed and the steering returns to center it clunks. asked the dealer if this was the same as the colbalt problem and i was told there was not any problems he knew about with the hhr steering. this is a low milage car and should not have this problem.
10/22/201190000
The power steering indicator came on and then the power steering went out. i took the car to an auto parts store, a worker there said that chevy had a recall on the cobalt for the same issue, but there is no recall for the chevy hhr. there are other people with this same issue.

While driving approximately 45 mph, the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel and the wheel became very difficult to turn and i almost crashed going around a corner. i stopped at a safe location and turned off the engine. the power steering returned once i restarted however this happened again the following day and twice yesterday and twice again today. i did an on-line search and see that many other hhr drivers are having the same problem. something needs to be done with correcting this defect before someone is killed.

The power steering light cam on, and the vehicle became hard to steer. turn the engine off, and the problem went away. it is now coming on every time the vehicle is started, and does not correct itself. i know there was a recall on the cobalt, which shares the same parts with the hhr. i feel that gm should recall the hhr as well.

The power steering failed on the car while parked. it was determined a short occurred in the steering column that caused the electric assist steering motor to stop working. changed out the fuse to a much higher rating, fuse still blew out. the steering column was replaced and the car engineers that were consulted said that disassembly of the column was not needed to find the cause of the short. also the insurance company were called in to see if a previous accident caused the short. the insurance company determined that the short was not caused by the accident.

On my 2007 hhr with only 18,500 miles on it the power steering warning light came on while i was driving on a major highway. i lost power steering and handling the vehicle was very difficult when i had to turn the wheel. this is definitely a safety concern and a recall should have been done to fix the problem. other gm models in the same year had recalls, but not the hhr's. after parking the vehicle the steering returned to normal upon startup.

Power steering will display on console & inseconds the steering wheel practically locks unable to turn at all, i pull off to the side of the road and turn off the car & turn it on again & will work again, the fear of crashing i took the car to the dealership & they state its the motor for the power steering, this is extremly dangerous it happened to me on the hwy. if canada recalled this issue. why not in the usa?

While driving off of the interstate, slowing from 70 mph, and turning onto the exit ramp, my driver information center gave 3 warning beeps and showed power steering in the display. at the same time, i lost all power steering. steering became very difficult with more difficulty at slower speeds. after stopping the vehicle and turning the ignition off, the warning went away and power steering returned for a short period of time. then again, as i was driving down the road, the warning sounded and the power steering assist was entirely gone. this has happened daily at various speeds at various times of the day. it happens within the first minute of driving and sometimes i can drive 10 or more minutes after re-start before the warning sounds and steering assistance is lost. it is extremely difficult to maneuver the vehicle in traffic when the power steering assistance is lost.

Power steering failure i own a 2007 chevrolet hhr with 65940 miles. two times now the power steering warning light came on. i took the vehicle to the dealer i purchased the vehivle from and was told that currently there is no vehicle recall for this problem even though the chevrolet cobalt is currently being recalled, and they both use the same power steering unit. the service person report stated that there was a short in the steering column and the power steering motor is failing, requireing replacement of the column and power steering motor. the total cost for replacement was quoted at $765.40. this is a safety issue because whem the warning sounded the steering became more difficult. this vehicle problem needs to be recalled as a vehicle safety issue!

The electric power steering motor fails almost every time my chevy hhr (2007) is driven. this leaves the vehicle hard to control. i am told that the electric motor needs to be replaced. this is the same electic motor that is in the chevy cobolt and certain pontiacs that was recalled. gm will not recall this model and is forcing drivers to continue driving with faulty and hazardous power steering motors, or pay to replace them on their own.

I have a 2007 hhr. since new it has had front end problems. the swaybar bushings are defective and cluck in cold weather. replacing them does not fix the problem. (my dealer has replaced them at least once.) the struts make noise too in cold weather, the intermediate shaft has to be replaced every 10000 miles because it starts binding and clunking. (replaced on my car 3 times now) however my biggest (safety) concern is the electric power steering. all other gm cars with the same system have been recalled and alot of hhr steering systems are failing. mine has not yet failed, but is does have a loud rattle (my research tells me that it is the gear on the motor) that my dealer cannot duplicate i have only 31000 miles on it now and and worry about the power assist failing at the worst possible moment when my wife is driving with our kids. i understand that i won't lose all steering, just power assist, however if you are not expecting a sudden increase in steering resistance, the wheel could jerk out of your hand and you could easily take out someone on a sidewalk. gm, please just recall the hhr too and replace my steering column before someone gets killed.

Hhr was brought in on friday 02/12 for rubbing noise in steering column. car was kept for 1 day to repair. i was told rattling noise repaired. i stated it was a rubbing noise. told to bring the car in when it was making the noise. car returned to power on 02/18/10 with same rubbing noise (see repair order 473237- no survey card given to me). spent 15 minutes with the mechanic in parking lot while car was making the rubbing sound. it was clearly heard by the mechanic. car kept for another day for repair. when i called on 02/19/10, i was told by mike that marc was not in and that the mechanic worked on the car all day, but could not duplicate the sound. i was told he even drove the car 25 miles to duplicate and yet mileage in/out are the same on invoice. per the mechanic, you cannot keep bringing the car in for the same problem, that they (whoever they are) would start questioning the warranty. i feel they should question the ability of the mechanic to do the job. *tr

Driver was leaving parking lot when passenger side (right front) cv shaft broke completely in half at 35,440 miles without warning. cv shaft could be heard slapping around under car while motor running in gear, probably tearing up other components under the hood and suspension. the cv shaft breakage left the vehicle under no power because passenger wheel is the drive wheel....vehicle started to roll backwards into traffic. also, the vehicle's steering wheel also had no ability to be turned to the left due to the broken cv shaft blocking it by shaft hitting the wheel/heat shield/rotor assy. owner had to push car backwards out of traffic and into parking lot. vehicle would still rolled while in park, had to use parking brake to make vehicle stationary. i waited 2.5hrs for gm road side assistance to get tow truck to my vehicle. 1st tow truck didn't come due to gm not checking to see how far they were from vehicle location. vehicle was towed to jba chevrolet (glen burnie, md) on june 25th, 09 (next day). i went to dealership to check on car and get loaner. jba offered no loaner stating that service dept not open and they must diagnose first and wait until monday and then maybe i get a loaner. also gm cust asst 1-800 number stated i could rent and get reimburse but i don't trust gm and money at all after seeing how others treated about and how poorly they manage their own money. this cv shaft incident happened 1 week after getting car back from dealership for brake overheating/warping and heat shield grinding problem. the mechanic then stated he knew brakes were cheaply made and problem but no recall and if over 36,000 miles...they won't be free anymore.... cv shaft looked to be made of cheap aluminum cast and i believe same heat problem that made caused rotor to warp, caused cv shaft to become brittle. either this or components were reinstalled incorrectly by jba chevrolet when they repaired brake problem. *tr

The brakes started shuttering after 20000 miles, the dealer found the brake rotors were warped and turned the rotors. at 55000 miles the trouble has returned and since the car is out of the 3 yrs 36000 mile warranty will not fix. the brakes pulsate badly at this point and 2 service managers claim is the result of the rotors being too light for the weight of the car and it is happening to many chevy hhr owners. the 2nd problem is the electronic steering. the steering shakes when the warped brakes are applied due to the plastic gears wearing and when you are driving over a rough surface. again the dealer nor gm will make repairs due to car out of 3 yr 36000 warranty. again the service managers has admitted this problem is happening to many owners. both problems can lead to a loss of control and the rotors could cause the brake pads to deteriorate and prevent proper braking leading to loss of control and accidents. *tr

Purchased 2007 hhr new in october 2006. with only 249 miles on the car, i returned to the dealer and reported a loud banging noise from the drivers side front end. the could not verify the noise. since then they replaced two shift assemblies, one steering column and in november 2007 they replaced the drivers side front strut. the banging noise was still there. now they think it may be the chassis tweaking ,but still cannot find or fix the the rattling noise. also the transmission makes a clunking noise and the car surges when starting it while still in park. the say this is normal. my car has been in courtesy chevrolet's shop for moore than 30 days since i purchased it. i do not drive it anymore as i believe it is unsafe, and a lemon. the car now has less than 15,000 miles. the car was taken to their shop on 10/19/06, 1/08/07, 7/19/07, 10/27/07, 10/22/07 and 11/13/07. *tr
STEERING - WHEEL AND HANDLE BAR

It would be easier to list the things that are ok with this car. i've resurfaced or replaced the rotors several times (4 times in one year) after consistently complaining to the dealer that it sounded like things were falling off the car. the car's breaking and steering capacity is extremely diminished. i've replaced a broken stabilizer control arm and now i'm told the front end needs to be rebuilt. this damage is a direct result of the continuing problem with the rotor warping. the check engine light is on more than off and its been in at least 10 times for this issue. gm customer service is aware of these issues and refuses to return customer calls.
