My battery was dead, so i put a battery charger on the battery, then went to start the car. i turned the key for about three revolutions and then the car exploded! i wasn't sure what happened because i was sitting inside the car and there was snow on the windshield. i got out and there was plastic parts all around the car, and there were flames coming from the motor!

I purchased my brother-in-law's car in march. in august, while i was parked outside a friend's home, the car caught fire. no one was in the car and the keys were with me. after online investigation, we found that the car had a recall on it in 2009. my brother-in-law was never notified so neither were we. our first step was to contact gm who said there was nothing they planned on doing about this. we contacted the bbb who also contacted gm. gm then called us and again said there was nothing they could do. i feel there is plenty they can do. what about if my daughter and i had been in the car? how about if i had needed time off from work? i had to purchase another vehicle i was not prepared to purchase. we have the recall information, pictures from the fire, and a letter from gm if you are interested. i feel there must be some sort of compensation for this. the recall was because of their mess up in the factory and they failed to notify my brother-in-law. if gm had done what they were supposed to do, the fire would never have happened.

Driving along and security light came on and car died. waited some time after pulling over and car started sometimes car will not start right away because of security light this is random and very annoying as you do not know when the car is going to die. dealer wants to replace parts that are very expensive and i did this once before (out of warranty) and can't see doing it again if this is not a fix. *tr

My 2000 chevy impala decides not to start on some days. at first, it was very infrequent and now its happening more and more often. when i turn the key to start my car, the only thing that happens is the security light turns on. after about 10 minutes the my car suddently starts up again. from what i read online and on youtube, this problem is notorious with a lot of gm vehicles. not a lot of mechanics know what the problem is and i dont have the time or money to have it serviced multiple times. i do not understand why there has not been a recall for this obvious malfunction. i know that my next car will not be a gm.

Car will not start. it appears to be the passlock system. need to wait for system to reset and it will start. this seems to be a common problem with this car and many other gm vehicles. this should be a recall.

No warning, no event leading up to the failure. 2000 chevy impala ls 3.8 stalls constantly. no check engine light comes on, so there is no way to know what is causing this. seems to be a common problem all over just look it up on the internet, don't know why this is not a recall, it is very dangerous. i was traveling 70 mph in the fast lane on a major highway and the car just stalled, also stalled at a red light, also stalled traveling at about 10 mph and at 30 mph (almost rear-ended on both occasions). chevy does not have an answer, chevy mechanic told me this has been a common problem with all gm cars for years. why is this not known to the public? they replaced the thermostat and it stalled about a mile down the road. now they will try replacing the crankshaft position sensor but will not guarantee that this will solve the problem. next they would try the mass air sensor. this is a known common problem that could be catastrophic if it happened at the wrong time. i know, i was almost killed on that major highway that day.

I own a 2000 chevrolet impala. the dimmer switch on the steering column has failed/misfunctioned several times and is now locked in a permanent hi beam position. the lights have totally failed in the past. a website named topix.com has cited many instances of this type of light failure, resulting in several near misses as regards serious accidents. t is very apparent (and evident from the number of compalints filed with your office) that this is a very serious safety issue for which chevrolet is denying the existence and/or responsibility of any problem. they are simply ignoring this serious issue and trying to charge anywhere from $600 to $800 to fix this problem this problem apparently extends through many model years, from 2000 (or earlier)to 2007/2008. it is only a matter of time before someone driving at night is killed because of this defect. please advise what you have done regarding prior complaints, and what you intend to do to resolve this issue..

My 2000 chevrolet impala has a problem a couple of times every month where it won't start up. i'll turn the key and nothing happens. so i'll just wait 15-30 minutes and it starts up fine. i've heard many other people having the same problem on all similar gm vehicles and was wondering why there has been no recall.

Turn signals have started not working intermittently. not good if you have to merge into traffic on the highway. i have googled it and found that there are many complaints about this issue although not on this website. most resources say it is the hazard switch.

My daughter with her permit was driving the vehicle and the turn signals stopped working in the middle of traffic. luckily she pulled over safely and i continued to drive home. the hazards worked fine and after some research, the hazard switch is the failure. this has been going on intermittently for a month and finally they would work only one time after car was turned on. my local dealer wanted $400 dollars for a $60 part and labor. thank god for used parts and an easy dash remove only seven bolts instructions online. do it yourself for cheap. my daughter at 16 did most of it as i told her with instructions. i do love chevy will remain loyal but they need to wake up and solve some issues.

Tl*the contact owned a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact was driving approximately 65 mph and observed smoke coming from the vehicle. the vehicle was driven to the side of the road and the fire was extinguished. the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer. the cause of the fire had not been determined. there was a recall defect which the manufacturer failed to honor. the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown. the failure and current mileages were unavailable.

On feb.10th or 11th.my neighbor was attempting to jump start my car because the battery had failed due to a 3 day snow storm. after turned the ignition the second time, there was a loud boom. when we checked the engine, we noted the manifold cover had cracked into several pieces. also the wires were on fire. my neighbor quickly extinguished the flames. later, i went to my dealer(frank z chevrolet in dayton, oh. about the problem. i was told by the assistant service manager that the repairs could cost from $1,800-$2,000 mainly due to the fire damage. since i have been unemployed for 18 months, i have not had the car towed to the dealer for an estimate of actual damage.

My 2000 chevrolet impala is causing a great deal of financial hardships and is leaving me stranded in awkward situations. at unpredictable times it will not start. i turn the key and nothing. i took it to a gm dealer and they put a new ignition switch on the car and it was fine for 6 months. cost $500. i often could wait 10 to 15 minutes and it would start. but it began happening more and more. i took it in to a mechanic, he ran the codes and determined it was the ignition switch. cost $450 and within a month it began doing the same thing. i got stranded and had to have it towed to a gm dealer and they put a new battery on it and removed all the after market unlocking mechanisms and charged $550. three days later we have the same problem. it seems to be connected to the pass lock system. there has to be a defect of some sort going on in the whole starting electrical system. *tr

Body control module, pass lock sensor, ignition switch. will not allow car to start correctly often not at all. if research is done there is thousands of complaints on gm vehicles with this system having the same recurring problem. gm refuses to admit that this is an issue with this system. i have not personally had a injury caused by this problem but the potential for an injury is there. if i can not start my vehicle because of this problem it can and has left me in a position that is potentially hazardous. *tr

My 2000 impalas pass lock system stops the car from starting for up to 45 minutes at a time. i try to start the car and it wont turn over or do anything. it happens every time i try to start the car. it leaves my family stranded when we try to go places. what were to happen if there were an emergency? i'd be stranded. also the steering clunks alot when i turn. *tr

My 2000 impala has intermittent problems with the direction signals. at times they work fine and other times they don't. sometimes while the directional is working it will stop for no reason. this has resulted in several near rear end collisions even with arm signals. this occurs on a nearly daily basis. i am waiting to see if there is a recall as the cost to replace is approximately $500 as the directional signal is sold as a single unit (directional arm and flashing unit are 1 piece). the unit itself is over $300. *tr

Passlock 2 system fails. vehicle shuts off and can not be restarted for 15 minutes. this can happen when you are driving or parked. if it keeps happening when driving, it will cause a serious, if not fatal, accident. this theft deterrent system fails 2-3 times per week. the only solution is to replace the lock cylinder, which is about $500 and only available through the dealer. this solution does not always work though. i have had mine replaced twice within a year and it needs it again. gm should be responsible for this and recall it and fix it right. if you search for pass lock system failure on the internet, you will see thousands of people having the same problems. *tr

Tl*the contact owns a 2000 chevrolet impala. the contact stated that the security light illuminated in the vehicle. she believes that this caused the vehicle to stall at times or not crank at all. the vehicle would completely shut off and fail to restart. the following day, the vehicle still would not restart after several attempts. the failure occurred almost every other day and only the security light was illuminating constantly. the dealer and manufacturer have not been notified. the current mileage was 95,908 and failure mileage was 93,103.

While driving, for no reason at all, my 2000 chevy impala just dies on me. it locks up and won't restart for 30 minutes. this happens 3 or 4 times per week. this is extremely dangerous because it has happened at different speeds and road conditions. it has been occurring for the last 30 days. i researched online and found a blog where at least 30 other owners were having the same problem. *tr

My faulty passlock system causes car not to recognize the key and disables the engine for anywhere from 10minutes to several hours. sometimes the security light will appear in the message center while i'm driving, but most times it happens without warning. i will put in the key, but when i turn it, the engine is disabled and the security light blinks. i have to wait 10minutes for it to restart, and more often than not, it just trips itself continually and i'll be stuck for 30minutes or more. i have been left stranded countless times in the heat, and dread even stopping for gas for fear that my car won't start again. it is a constant problem when i travel out of town, as i fear that if i stop in a small town, i'll be completely stranded if my car doesn't start back up. two weeks ago i drove out of town and went 6 hours one way without stopping because the security light was on. this is a huge problem, and a hazard to people's health. it's also dangerous if i get a flat tire on the highway and it won't start back up, then i am in danger for no reason. i've also worried about parking in a scarier part of town, and not being able to just drive away safely if i see some shady people lurking around. there is no fix for this, as the dealer will charge $600 and not correct the issue. my 2000 impala should be recalled, as this obviously faulty passlock system poses a threat to human health and safety. i will never buy a chevy, gm, or dodge car again because of this issue that chevy has continued to ignore. thousands complain on chevy forums but nothing has been done about it. big big problem here. *tr

I bought a used 2000 chevy impala for my 75 year old mother in law. the car has a problem with starting and the security module. you can drive the car to the store or where-ever but when you get back into the car it won't start again. you usually have to wait 10 to 40 minutes with key in ignition for car to start again. there are a lot of people out there on the internet with the same problem. we already paid over $700 for a new starter and a new security module but that did not fix the problem. other people claim they have spent thousands replacing all sorts of items at recommendation of chevy dealerships to no avail. it seems that gm/chevrolet should institute a recall on this vehicle. it is also a problem in the 2002 and 2003 models of the chevy impala. *tr

Veh: 200 chevy impala ls yr:2000 fault: in the past few weeks this vech. has been experiencing faulty turn signals. sometimes they work and sometimes they stop, and then after cycling the hazard switch they return. i have researched the internet seeking information and i found that gm has done a recall on certain models in the same class year. i also contact the dealer and they said impala was not part of the recall even if the switch was the same used in the malibu. (recalled) nhtsa recall number 03v327. i am now unable to purchase a switch in the market because of the recall and the supply has been depleted. (told that from the dealer). in my mind gm should be conducting another recall before someone has an accident. *tr

Like everyone else w/ a 2000 impala i have faulty, non-working turn signals all the way to the major problems of the intake gasket problem to the most severe - the problem of the car stalling while driving or sitting at a light. and no one can pin pointe the actual problem. my car used to just stall out at least once or twice a day while driving. now the car has given up and i'm about to too. it starts when it wants... i wish life worked that way but it doesn't. today i decided to research recalls on the car and found out everyone has the problems i do but chevy has not taken care of anyone. please take note this is serious. *tr

My problem started back in november of 2006. i had to leave work to go pick up a sick child. when i got in my car it would not crank. i tried jumping it off but it still wouldn't start. i borrowed a car from a coworker and when i came back later it started without a problem. i took it to the dealership and they told me it was a fuel issue. but after reading all the complaints i realized it was indeed a passlock problem. it will happen about every 7 to 10 days, in fact today with the day. when out to my car at lunch and nothing happened. i do not want to spent $500 to get the problem fixed if it's not going to fix the problem. from everything i've read they are willing to take you money but not fix the problem. *tr

Car went out of control after driver put the car into gear to move it from a parked, idling position, after noticing a burning like odor. it was noted by the driver at that time that the temperature gauge was in the red zone. when the driver attempted to move the car to a safer parking area only a few feet in distance, she heard a sharp snapping sound and also felt a vibration in the steering wheel/column area. the car suddenly lurched forward, the head lights and dash lighting went completely out as the car began accelerating out of control. in addition, there was no steering or brake control. no work has been done yet to correct these problems because an insurance company is involved. *tr

For the last year my security light will randomly come on. soon after..sometimes hours, sometimes days...the car will not start. i contacted my dealer and they said it is a passlock security code problem. the car thinks it is getting stolen and you have to wait 15-20 minutes and try again. the code is easy to fix but it is also $395. the only place that can fix it is the dealership. i have done some investigating and many impalas have this problem. my dealer suggested i write a complaint because they see it a lot and hopefully a recall could occur. i don't know when it is going to happen again and being a young female it is scary when i walk out to my car late at night or alone. i have found car website forums and many have listed this same problem. i appreciate your time and hope that something can be done. this can be a safety issue for many people.

Car randomly doesn't start. when i first got the car(6 mos ago) i replaced the starter having no idea that this has been happening over and over again to many impala owners if not all of them. started fine for 2 weeks and it's been happening ever since. sometimes when the car doesn't start it trips the passlock and i have to wait anywhere from 10 to 30mins before it resets in order to try starting again. i've been driving the car and at quick stops i have to leave it running to be sure i won't get stuck there for 30 mins or so. i've also been stuck at gas stations waiting 10 to 30 mins(at the pump) for it to start again (very embarrassing). after all the complaints i've read i'm afraid to spend anymore money on this problem. *tr

Engine shuts down for no apparent reason. almost like someone turned the ignition switch off. i purchased this 2000 chev. impala ls in may 2005. on may 30, the engine coughed once but continued running smoothly, so i didn't consider it a problem. then june 29 it coughed again but continued running smoothly. that evening on the way home from work with no warning, the engine just quit running. after it sat on the side of the road for a few minutes, i was able to start it and continue on my drive home. since then, between july 5 and august 10, the engine shut down 7 times. 3 of those were on august 10. each time, after a few minutes, i was able to restart it. i took it to a dealer for repair(power chevrolet, irvine, ca),on august 12, after a short diagnosis, the complaint was signed off as road test 5 miles unable to duplicate customer concern. throttle body dirty, cleaned throttle body since there had been a recall on a fuel pressure regulator the service rep. had it replaced. i didn't receive the old regulator, but it didn't cure the problem of the engine shutting down for no apparent reason, because on august 22 it did it again (twice). someone at gm needs to determine the cause of this problem and inform the service personnel of the fix. an inexperienced driver could be in real trouble if this happened.

Received 2000 chevy impala as an inheritance. within 2 weeks car at times would not start. all lights on dash would illuminate followed by the yellow/orange security light. this is due to a passlock problem where the passlock system thinks that something other than a legitimate key is being used to try and start the car. my sister had this problem and at times would have to turn the key in the ignition to on position and wait 10 minutes. after several days of research i was able to determine that to reset the passlock system the key needed to be left in the ignition switch in the on position then removed and repeated two more times (3 times, 30 minutes total). after doing this i had no more problems. my only problem is there are lots of people out there that are not mechanically inclined, and plenty of people have had to had their vehicles towed and face a diagnosis fee (and plenty of times misdiagnosis). according to all the information readily available chevy/gm has to know about this and i consider it shameful that they do not allow some kind of concession or modification so that a customer of theirs with a legitimate key cannot start the vehicle. *tr

Periodic transmission slip from initial date of purchase - dealer could not duplicate when taken in for service, until out of warranty. reflash e-prom/update done at 75k miles to correct problem. now at 110k dealer says new transmission is needed as car is exhibiting same problems. car headlights go out when using high beams. car has lost all power twice when driving and completely shut off, thus causing a significant steering problem until the car could be stopped. grounding wires added to see if correction could be made. lights & car have not quit yet, but transmission continues to exhibit shifting problems with check engine light coming on. when car is shut off the engine light will go out and not come back on and the car will reset it self and run okay for awhile. the car also exhibits a loud whining noise when the slippage / jerking is about to occur. gm will not allow conversation with anyone but a customer service person. all file numbers given to me by gm personnel when car was under warranty are not loaded into their data base, thus nothing can be done, mileage is too high and these things are expected to happen. *nm
